Electrical engineering undergrad here. I’m trying sooo hard to intern at Rivian and I have some skills they look for but MAN is it hard to get some eyes on my resume lol. Love their product!
Great review guys. It sure looks well sorted for a new design. It’s good to see what can be done. I know electric trucks aren’t that practical yet if you want to tow any distance. It’ll be interesting to see where these types of designs go over the next 5 to 10 years.
That's kind of what I like about this truck compared to the F-150 lighting, and the other coming electric trucks is this one doesn't really seem to be marketed towards people that would tow long distances. But you're right though, that is a big Achilles heel of ev trucks
This is exactly the thing I am complaining about most electric cars. Why do they have to have 800+ hp and 800+ ft/lbs of torque, weight 2+ tons and cost an arm and a leg? There is no need for that. What I want from an ev car is 4 little 50-75 hp & 30-50 ft/lbs motors and a battery that will let me do 500+ km that can be bought at a regular price. That's what we all want. For example, most Tesla owners never owned a car that had above 200hp and all of a sudden, they get themselves into a car that is way above their driving skills if they accidentaly floored it. High hp/torque e-car is NOT the way to go. The Rivian could do it with half the hp and torque and 2000 lbs less.

I certainly wish Rivian all the best and a long future. Currently well out of my price range, but with time these technologies trickle down to new more affordable generations of vehicles.
Spot on. So well said, Making something different is easy, making something better is difficult. They took the best elements of pickup truck design and added thoughtful modern flourishes that only EVs can offer

After having driven a tesla model 3 for about a week recently, I'm pretty pretty much sold on EVs and this R1T has been growing on me since it was launched. Would be a massive upgrade from the ol Ridgeline!
Just know that there will be limitations in the cold or if you plan to tow with it, which I would only do for short distances. EVs are best if they can do everything that you can normally do within 2/3 of it's stated range and then charge at home when not using it.
Love this video! Thanks for the review. And thank you for calling out the lack of CarPlay, it’s just not acceptable. Where was this filmed? Looks gorgeous!
I do like RT1 better as a model name, but that would make the upcoming SUV the RS1 which would eventually be a problem with Audi. Maybe better would be TR/SR, especially because they could eventually have a race car with an SR71 designation.
I absolutely love these reviews. It's informative, it's both objective AND subjective, which is actually a really nice thing, and it's got moments of hilarity. What else can you truly want.... Besides one of the vehicles you are reviewing? Oh, yeah, they tend to partner with Omaze or that.
You said best “versions of both”...I pull a 45ft draper head, 1000 gallon fuel trailer, and a seed tender on and off road regularly in NW MO with a F350 Tremor. I like this truck, but it couldn’t do any of that. So this might be the best version of a light truck. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Yeah it's a 7000lbs " light duty" street truck .. the suspension isn't designed for hauling heavy especially offroad but I mean with 800 hp and 900ftlbs of instant torque and all 4 wheels being individually driven it could probably outtow basically every 3/4 -1ton diesel power/traction wise , just the rest of the truck ain't gonna survive any real payloads / work and abuse
Yeah, towing is the Achilles heel of these trucks. Hard to tow frequently when you are losing 50-75% of your range to do so. To Rivian's credit, they aren't selling this as a working truck in any way.
@@Briggsian yeah would be curious to see how the battery life is when hooked up to the 11000lbs it is rated to tow (my guess is half its rated range at best , now do that in the middle of winter and this truck probably has 100mile range loaded tops 💀) also curious on how the brakes would deal with 18k lbs doing highway speed or hill desents .. also hard to have a good payload when your 7000lbs curb weight is 80% of your gvwr lol although these will never probably have more then a cooler and some lawn chairs in the back
It's amazing how much of a dealbreaker no carplay is for me. All electrics are doing the same thing so now it's up to them to have great features and interiors. But no Carplay? C'mon guys.
I use CarPlay a lot as well. But only because I have yet to find a reliable software by anyone else. Willing to try something out there worthy of a shot
Superb review and channel in general! I'd like to take this opportunity to say my 3yo is probably your biggest (and youngest) fan. Every time I turn on TH-cam, he comes over and asks, "Are we watching James?" And goes without saying that the I'm James is his favourite bit (he points at the TV and exclaims, "Look, there's James!" Given the only other shows getting this sort of reaction are Paw Patrol and PJ Masks, this is something incredible you've achieved! Keep up the awesome work!
This has all the makings of a proper usable, EV SUV which in my opinion is just great. Wait for a few years when the battery tech improves and costs are lower and it's gonna be just perfect. Hopefully, just because it's a new entrant in the market, it doesn't get ignored and also they have enough manufacturing plants to make it go. Otherwise, great truck
I think it would depend on what went wrong. If for whatever reason the motor seized, obviously not. If one just lost power, I suspect the software would be able to compensate, but it might put you in limp home mode, or possibly 2 wheel drive. That's just speculation though.
This is one of the best videos on this truck so far. Hadn't considered that these smaller trucks would be rated at a 3/4 ton truck level due to weight. I wonder what it will do to that segment once battery range is improved for towing. Personally, I like the truck. No Apple CarPlay is almost a deal breaker, but aside from that the main concern is range for those who tow. Need at least 250-300 miles of range towing, or about a 2.5 hour drive towing 8,500 lbs.
The thing about towing, is most truck owners don’t do it. (Over 75% tow zero or one time per year). Until one of the battery breakthroughs in the lab reaches mass production, something like the Ram REx would likely be the best electrified solution to the niche that tows long distances often.
I don't know why but I really like this truck for the first time I saw it in a concept I'm not a huge fan of touch screens for controls I hope it's not going to become a new trend although I know it seems to be the way I'd rather not put my greasy hands all over the screen when I get off work. At this point I don't think this vehicle is geared towards the working class not quite yet
It seems like using the touchscreen for everything is more of a trend amongst the start-ups right now since its cheaper and easier to to it that way. I get the feeling that, provided Rivian can become profitable and expand their lineup, they'll add physical buttons with newer vehicles.
You're putting your greasy hands all over your phone screen, so what's the difference? 😋 Put a screen protector on it, or quick wipe with a microfiber cloth should take care of that issue.
The more i watch these Rivian reviews, the more i love this truck. Too bad i cant afford one or will be able to for a while. But i would go for the SUV variant, much more practical for me. Brilliant car
I've got an R1T reservation and I 'should' take delivery by the end of the year. But the lack of Carplay support is the single biggest reason I would consider cancelling it. Rivian's navigation just isn't good enough. Also, this is an off roader, but their maps don't show any of the off road trails I like to drive. If it had CarPlay, I could use Ghia GPS, which lets me download off road maps. Also, no CarPlay means I need to mount my phone up somewhere so I can see it. That also means I can't use the wireless charger. Also, this car doesn't let you play your phone's music through USB. You have to use BlueTooth, which degrades the sound quality. Of course you can use Spotify, but that's one more service you have to subscribe to. Moving to an EV already cause a massive change that the customer has to adapt to. IMO, EVs need to minimize the changes a customer must undertake. For me, personally, the lack of CarPlay support is a big one.
Exactlyyyyy! I also just kept wondering "Why does this car look so appealing...so pleasant to look at?" And I realised it's the colour. Absolutely love the colour of this thing. 7:17
For $67,000 this thing is amazing (especially when compared to over priced gas powered SUVs). The one though that sort of causes me to stop and pause is the over engineering. Imagine driving down the highway and trying to change the vent locations. Seems rediculous to me ...
The "do everything" touch screen model is money saving for them and a dangerous headache for us. Blame Tesla, Tesla buyers, and all the others supporting this trend
With all the emergency braking, radar guided cruise control, etc features in modern vehicles, its not as dangerous as 20 yrs ago looking down to adjust radio or putting a tape or cd in the player. Its actually safer especially when Alexa can do a lot of things for you. Most people adjust vents before they get going in their vehicle at a standstill.
@@dandroid761 Some advancements, like the ones you pointed out initially, are actual advancements. The all touch giant screen is a step backwards. Right now, I don't have to look away from the road to adjust temp, put on my seat heaters, mess with the radio, I can do it all by reaching for where I know the buttons are or using steering wheel controls. And I never have to worry about glare that makes controlling my care an even bigger pain. I can do less with this car than I can with one built in 2012 that also has voice control. It's a disappointing trend because it's worse for consumers, better for car companies, and consumers are bending over backwards to justify it.
I don't like the trend, and I appreciate the manufacturers keeping essential features physical. My litmus is always "how easily can I do it on the freeway without getting dangerously distracted?"
Really love the looks and performance of the Rivian. Kinda bummed that there aren't any physical knobs or buttons for HVAC or stereo, though. That's a big flaw, IMO.

It’ll be interesting to see where these types of designs go over the next 5 to 10 years.
th-cam.com/video/UTc4ZyWVFr0/w-d-xo.html 🤣🤣🤣
That's kind of what I like about this truck compared to the F-150 lighting, and the other coming electric trucks is this one doesn't really seem to be marketed towards people that would tow long distances. But you're right though, that is a big Achilles heel of ev trucks
@@spencerlorrigan what do you mean by “long distance”? It’s 100 miles to my camp (and I need to get back)

I started to laugh when Thomas got out of the car, cuz I knew something hilarious would happen next. You guys never disappoint XD
The horsepower/torque/acceleration is insane and not needed by most. Hopefully one day they make a dual motor set up and bring the cost way down.
@@Traumatree Agree 100%, but they are going for that wow factor. The boring versions are coming. We just have to wait a bit longer.

It’s the perfect size, all the other trucks these days are needlessly huge.

I think Rivian has done an excellent job on this truck. They seem embrace the idea the you don't have to reinvent the wheel, you improve the wheel.

“Massive” ’is the right word. Ridgeline is 4500 pounds, and this thing is >7000.
@@FuncleChuck as long as it's got some good breaks we should be good to go! At least it's no 9000lbs like the hummer!
Just know that there will be limitations in the cold or if you plan to tow with it, which I would only do for short distances. EVs are best if they can do everything that you can normally do within 2/3 of it's stated range and then charge at home when not using it.
I love the return to column shift. I hate how console shifters eat up so much interior room.
That’s such a great point, CarPlay is literally the best and will never be beat
Love this video! Thanks for the review. And thank you for calling out the lack of CarPlay, it’s just not acceptable. Where was this filmed? Looks gorgeous!
I do like RT1 better as a model name, but that would make the upcoming SUV the RS1 which would eventually be a problem with Audi. Maybe better would be TR/SR, especially because they could eventually have a race car with an SR71 designation.
The naming is RIVIAN 1 TRUCK / RIVIAN 1 SUV = R1-T/ R1-S
This is an electric vehicle I'd be willing to consider purchasing.
I absolutely love these reviews. It's informative, it's both objective AND subjective, which is actually a really nice thing, and it's got moments of hilarity. What else can you truly want.... Besides one of the vehicles you are reviewing? Oh, yeah, they tend to partner with Omaze or that.
Omaze is a scam
omg that intro...had to at least comment. Thanks for the laugh! TOP NOTCH PRODUCTION
I really don’t need a truck, but every review of the R1T makes me want one.
@@Briggsian yeah would be curious to see how the battery life is when hooked up to the 11000lbs it is rated to tow (my guess is half its rated range at best , now do that in the middle of winter and this truck probably has 100mile range loaded tops 💀) also curious on how the brakes would deal with 18k lbs doing highway speed or hill desents .. also hard to have a good payload when your 7000lbs curb weight is 80% of your gvwr lol although these will never probably have more then a cooler and some lawn chairs in the back
@@brocks692 TFL Trucks has one that they've been doing testing with. Towing 8000lbs around Colorado, they had around 100 miles of total range.
that opening. lmfao. love you guys!

I'd like to take this opportunity to say my 3yo is probably your biggest (and youngest) fan. Every time I turn on TH-cam, he comes over and asks, "Are we watching James?"
And goes without saying that the I'm James is his favourite bit (he points at the TV and exclaims, "Look, there's James!"

pretty much the only EV I would ever consider buying. Looks great, thoughtful features, and that color. I even bought a few shares of RIVN...
A truck, an adventure vehicle .... with no physical buttons for the controls inside? And no complaints about that???
I will gladly complain lol
This has all the makings of a proper usable, EV SUV which in my opinion is just great. Wait for a few years when the battery tech improves and costs are lower and it's gonna be just perfect. Hopefully, just because it's a new entrant in the market, it doesn't get ignored and also they have enough manufacturing plants to make it go. Otherwise, great truck
Great review as always. On a side note I'm curious to know what happens if you have a motor issue on one of the wheels? Can you still drive it?
I think it would depend on what went wrong. If for whatever reason the motor seized, obviously not. If one just lost power, I suspect the software would be able to compensate, but it might put you in limp home mode, or possibly 2 wheel drive. That's just speculation though.
Yasss! I've been waiting for this review for what feels like years!
Put a screen protector on it, or quick wipe with a microfiber cloth should take care of that issue.
I'm getting annoyed at the lack of mentions of Android Auto. It isn't just CarPlay that's missing.
@@JohnnyZenith I get where you’re commin’ from man. But CarPlay is my thing.
@@JohnnyZenith People still use Android phones?
Exactlyyyyy! I also just kept wondering "Why does this car look so appealing...so pleasant to look at?" And I realised it's the colour. Absolutely love the colour of this thing. 7:17
I've seen a few of these on the road, and they look slick
It’s definitely more like in the mid 80s once you get cool options but still worth it
Really love the looks and performance of the Rivian. Kinda bummed that there aren't any physical knobs or buttons for HVAC or stereo, though. That's a big flaw, IMO.
