I was going to buy the Mclaren F1, but after I saw the Doug score, I decided to go for the Rivian instead. Thank you Doug for helping me make this important decision. ...and for saving me 3 million dollars.
Fun fact. Just started at Rivian in Illinois and that little flashlight in the door, is the 7,777 battery cell in the vehicle. The battery that powers the R1S contains 7,776 battery cells
The first thought that popped into my head when hearing about the Camping Mode auto-level feature was, “that would be really handy when you have to check your oil.” Then I realized how that doesn’t apply here 😂
@@wolfguardian8312 While you’re out there checking the oil on electric vehicles, can you do me a favor and get me a #10 can of steam? Not the #9 or #11, and definitely not the #12. I specifically need the #10 can of steam. Thank you in advance.
It would be especially useful for transmission fluid changes and diff oil changes. I have to pull out the level tool and adjust jack stands to get it level and even then, it's impossible on my driveway to get it perfect.
I love these things. That being said, I can’t stand this trend of accessing every little thing from in-screen submenus. Just let me move a vent, turn my wipers on and off, and adjust ergonomic stuff.
You get used to it... These are pretty muchly Tesla's with a different engineering team, and it took me a week to get used to my Tesla's screen controls... As long as it's designed intuitively, you won't miss twisting knobs or pressing real buttons...
I actually really like the front end, it’s rare for a company to come out with something so distinctive these days. You can see only a sliver of a Rivian and instantly know what it is. I think that’s generally good design
I feel like they probably wanted these to have just a single lightbar that integrates the headlights, but there's some dumb regulation requiring headlights to be in their own separate housings.
@@KartKing4ever the newest bmw design language just isn't ... bmw. the back taillights made me think it was japanese sometimes, u know. just my opinion the best bmw's was the e92 2008 era, the looks i mean, and the outgoing m4,m3's before they did a new facelift on the bmw design language. they aren't unique looking anymore.
My favorite part about Rivians is the similarity in components between models, saves effort in manufacturing and makes repairs less complex. There was serious thought put into these vehicles when it comes to shared components.
The front end design is my favorite part. It's hard to come up with a distinctive yet good looking front end design in a sea of sameness. I think they nailed it. If they don't go out of business, I can see this front end becoming as iconic as Jeep's vertical grill
Imagine this when they do next model year improvements. I'd add compressed air/power under the front trunk, power folding seats, electrochromic roof glass, interior revisions and pretty much sit back, crack a beer and enjoy the view from the top for awhile. This is one amazingly capable and comprehensive vehicle. Looks like Rivian stayed up a lot of late nights doing their homework.
And imagine the price keeps increasing by 10-20% every year as it's been so far. Just gonna be another "nice yet too expensive for 98% of the population" car.
Your last sentence: “This is, quite simply, the best all around car I’ve ever tested.” I immediately put a deposit down on one. You should get royalties, Doug! Your opinion carries a ton of weight with me. Thanks. 👍
Congratulations you played yourself. Electric cars will never work. The grid already can’t keep up with all the charging, just look at california, telling people not to charge their EV’s LMAO. Not to mention, everyone sitting there for 30 minutes to 1 hour to get MAYBE half battery charged, enjoy, asshole 🥂
I'm really impressed with how well Rivian seem to be nailing it with their target audience, while making a truck & suv that is still a good functional vehicle for anyone. I'm glad they're not trying to out-quirk all the other EV competitors and seem to be focusing on utility and ergonomics, while throwing in a bunch of handy stuff for outdoors like the speaker & leveling setting. I'm hoping the long term reliability is fair on these.
until someone can mass produce a sub $30,000 (think Model T electric) all we are doing is increasing the have and have-not gap and wasting resources. Was really hoping that was where Ford was going when they stopped car production (ahem) but it appears they want bucks and not progress as well. Sorry but I hardly think $80k+ is "a good functional vehicle for anyone"
I remember last year when I first saw the R1S and read about all its features and thought this thing will be a hit! It really sticks to the true rugged and useful SUV spirit. Absolutely love this thing.
@@paulmoore8799 Seen Escalade or similar pricing lately? The R1S is actually a bargain in the market IMO for this level of performance, features and tech.
I agree with you, its a fair price. I do hate the "do everything in the screen." Feel like thats the only thing I dont like about this car. I can't even tilt my wheel or adjust my vents without going into a screen, yet I have to be hands free in order to make a call.
@@ttoommssmmiitthh The single screen thing works fine. 4+ years now in Model 3's for me. So much can be done with voice control and the rest saved to your driver profile. How often do you need to adjust your mirrors or steering wheel? Typically once and save it to your profile and forget it...really no hassle IMO.
I've been waiting for doug to review this car the day I saw it, thank you so much doug, I actually have 1 preordered and u gave a good representation of space and features
I’ve owned mine for 3 months now in limestone with off-road wheels and it’s really a 10/10 vehicle. Definitely my dream car in terms of performance, looks, and features. Absolutely the best SUV on the market by a wide margin.
This SUV looks truly impressive, the only thing I don't really like is that simple tasks like adjusting the AC vents or your steering wheel seems to be quite complicated. Other than that I really think that Rivian is doing an amazing job with their products, this is a truly capable ando comfortable SUV.
Weird fact is that Doug selected SUV above and penalty 1 point the pick-up for practicality.. Well i would tell that it all depends of the family size, since to many smaller families up to 5 people R1T pick-up would be better option since no one goes with 7 people the practicality comes with the extra useful space in the tunnel behind rear seats, and bigger more useful space in pick-up bed.. SUV has no spare wheel if you get it will take some big space from the trunk compared to the pick-up which has-it under a lid in rear bed.. R1T can also have the biggest Max-battery pack to eliminate range anxiety but the SUV because it has shorter base can not fit the Max-battery pack which is the important key factor for these big full EV's to travel on longer distances. So, i think it all depends what customers will choose to consider a good practicality based on they 'r needs : more people > less space R1S-SUV or fewer people but much more stuff > R1T..
Not sure about the vents but the steering wheel and mirror positions are saved in your driver profile. you only need to do it once so it’s not that bad
Wow. I am neither financially capable, nor logistically able to purchase this or the R1T, nor do I particularly champion electric vehicles. But I am extremely happy to see Rivian finally coming to market with such great vehicles. I was skeptical. But they're actually doing it. I hope they continue down their path of success.
Im not sure they are exactly successful quite yet. it's an 80k street queen for someone who has the extra money for a trendy new EV. the company operates at a loss.
They are doing it and it looks great, but I’m certainly concerned with whether they’ll survive. It’ll be a few years before we know for sure, but things do seem promising considering they have a nice cash cushion. Worst case scenario, maybe Tesla can buy them out and keep Rivian’s vision intact while making adjustments to enable the company to stand on its own two legs. Coming from a Tesla owner, it feels to me that Rivian borrowed from Tesla’s innovations in the best way possible and that they have a similar culture. The differences I see is their target audiences and their inhibitions.
Yeah freedom regulated into submission makes us common people have less income, fewer choices and more propaganda to leverage us away from the capitolism that allowed us to live as we choose.
What a marvel this vehicle is! I remember when everyone was doubting Rivian if their car would be competitive. It turns out it is fantastic in every single aspect you can think of.
One of the harsh lessons in owning an EV is how much the range goes down once you put more than 2-2 adults in one. Good luck towing your boat or camper. Don't even try doing it up a mountain road. And certainly not in freezing weather that will chop another 30% off your range. Battery technology is not ready yet for trucks or the electric grid. We are way ahead of our skis just because activists scream the loudest. Meanwhile the latest IPCC report explicitly states we are not going to die and the real year we need to be carbon neutral by is 2100.
@@RJT80 cold temperatures absolutely nuke the range. That’s why I think Hydrogen fuel cells are underrated. The Hyundai vision 74 is the best of both worlds with a hydrogen plug in hybrid.
@@RJT80 bro, weight literally does not matter for an EV in my experience. My model Y consumes the same energy with me alone or all my friends. Towing is completely different.
@@RJT80 Almost no one tows. Over 80% of truck owners don't even average once per year. The grid is absolutely ready and you're full of shit. The IPCC report, which I literally helped on (I'm an aerospace engineer, who was working with NASA Goddard at the time), stated it was already too late to stop major effects from GCC. 2100 is the point of no return for humanity surviving. You're all around just full of shit.
I just received my R1T and it's AMAZING! Great vehicle! I use to love the big V8s, but the fact that this thing does 0-60 in 3 seconds and completely stealthy, which a slight motor whine it has changed that opinion. Love this vehicle!
I really really love this thing. It seems everything has been done right, the finishing touches of usability like a flashlight and a portable speaker is just so great.
All the stuff about the app.. I am surprised that you said "I had never seen that before" Teslas had these features for years. Remote lock and unlock, maps view of the car, vent windows, live view of the cameras. This SUV looks great! Thank you for the review.
I agree. It is great that they are incorporating technology which was introduced in Teslas into their cars and moving the quality and variety of EVs forward, but it was odd that these features were discussed as if they are a first. Mirror/steering wheel adjustment via the screen and steering wheel controls, sentry mode, climate controls through the screen, dog mode, etc. it was almost like he’d never been inside an EV before which we all know isn’t the case.
I agree and as a Tesla owner it’s a more than a little disappointing to not hear Doug give credit where it’s due. It’s not like he has to make fun of rivian or deem them for essentially carbon copying what Tesla has done but don’t act like you haven’t seen it before Doug…?
I’ve never been so compelled to buy a vehicle so badly. This thing checks all my boxes. Even though it doesn’t have the burly v8 I always search for, I feel this car makes up for it in so many other ways
It’s not really as big a problem as Doug is making it out to be. If you’re going to use the third row, you’d be accessing it through the rear doors, not the tailgate. So having that latch closer to the front makes sense.
nice vehicle and it sounds like a good review, I was amazed that he never poked himself in his eye with his long fingers but the guy started to give me a headache so lost interest.
I think you need a Doug score for nailing it with you FIRST car! Mercedes and the rest have been making cars for a hundred years and haven't got close? It's very impressive.
he said, build quality and handling are not there. He also said that EQS is a better car than Rivian. If it will be popular it will be only in the US, there is no need elsewhere to have this oversized car.
I feel like Doug has the power to dictate what cars alot of people will buy. I've seen comments about cars ranging from supercars to suvs that people decided to buy because of Doug's review. No wonder car companies like Ford are trying to work with him
I love how unique and oldschool this vehicle is in some ways! Also I'm disappointed Doug didn't get in the backseat, its hard to tell how big or small it is when he doesn't get in it.
i really, realllllly love this. This R1S is brilliant. I liked the pickup, but this for me is infinitely more practical and useful. I can't afford it at all but if I was in the market I'd surely pick this
i love how many features they managed to add without any of them seeming gimmick-y or unnecessary. also, love your reviews Doug, all the info with none of the extra filler or clickbait like a lot of other reviewers today :)
How do you miss the elephant in the room ? Ev is a scam , they are nonviable , massively subsidized from manufactures to local making a very select few enormous bank . Without the tax payer dollars propping this scam up it does not exist . Lmfao , there's not enough raw materials on the planet to build these toys to hit 25% of the needed vehicles Why seemingly intelligent people buy into this scam is disturbing . You will only research the bells and whistles, dissecting every inch , however no research into the actual viability
Rivian has been doing alot better than I thought they would. I see Rivian trucks everywhere now and my neighbor down the street just took delivery of one too.
Some of the functions on the center screen really need normal buttons and nobs. I Know it messes with the minimalist design (which I love) but its frustrating and potentially dangerous for some of those functions to be in the screen.
Programming a touchscreen button is cheaper and easier than developing, testing, integrating, building, quality checking, and installing a physical button. It's laziness and cheapness. Not that that's always bad, but there are some things they should have made the effort for.
100% THIS! I just got to the Center Screen and the Fact that you have to get into a Menu on the Touchscreen to adjust your Side Mirrors is bad, i don't like that Trend with EVs in general. Definitely prefer physical Buttons dedicated to certain Functions over a "Minimalist Interieur Look". I'm glad BMW and Audi still put Physical Buttons for Essential Functions that you don't need the Touchscreen for. But otherwise the Rivian seems fantastic Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
@@thatpersonsmusic I just stopped the Video when he started showing you have to use the Touchscreen to get to the Side Mirrors and then use the Physical Knobs on the Steering Wheel. But Air Vent Directions is even more annoying
The back only having 2 seats makes so much sense. Sitting in back seats in most cars is like sitting on actual bricks. I really like these seats because of how comfy they look.
EVs suck ass and I hope they all fail miserably. Until we have graphene batteries and nuclear power, the whole "sAvE tHe pLanEt" bs is a scam anyway, and it leaves us with drastically inferior vehicles, tethered to the grid with little ability to do serious work (towing/cold/etc). Fine as a grocery getter...
I hope that in “pet mode” there’s something to indicate to well-meaning passers-by that the air conditioner is on, so they don’t smash the window to rescue your dog. Extremely not a fan of central-screen controls for everything, though. Being able to quickly adjust vents, steering wheels, etc. in a direct tactile way is way faster and easier, even if it isn’t as “fancy.”
That is actually the case. the gear guard yeti-character-type-thing pops up and there is text on the screen saying AC is on and what temp its set to as well as current cabin temp. Rivian probably thougt of the "well-meaning passers-by".
It’s not really a “fanciness” thing, Lucid deliberately kept physical HVAC controls because they figured that was more luxurious. EVs have that partially because making one screen handle everything is lower manufacturing cost than custom, well-integrated switches.
The R1S is a very handsome design. Timeless and elegant. I hope Rivian survives its current production woes as it is trying to be something different and utilitarian. The vehicle leveler is a great and unique feature!
Rivian has thought of utilizing every foot they could with their vehicles. They took what was the norm for so long and thought outside the box to launch a new era of useful features. Love rivian
I agree except why does it still have the norm of the "doghouse" front end? It could have been shorter, had more interior space, or be more aerodynamic. They probably did not want it to be too different as to hurt sales and the frunk is cool.
I own an x5 and I drove a rivian r1t. It’s an amazing for the most part vehicle. The sticker price was 93 the owner said. For that price, why does my 84 k 2021x5 feel farrr better built and luxurious? Like it’s surprisingly noisy in that cabin, surprisingly 😅. For 93k? The owner said she agrees with me on the fact that it doesn’t give the cacoon effect like classic luxury cars do. But he said it’s ok for her as she’s never owned the classic luxury brands. Idunno I’m on the fence but I do like it, I just can’t justify the road noise and not comfortable enough suspension and just overall just ok feeling cabin for 93k. Thoughts?
Patience...clearly at this price/design/features this is not the car we're looking for..but with every company coming out with electric SUV..someone will..hopefully..maybe..fingers crossed.
@@LafemmebearMusic the x5 is better built. EV are very expensive and alll the tech and flashy gimmiky stuff doesnt help that price. these cars are just trendy. people will over pay to be apart of the trend even if it means getting less value. also a lot of people have been made to think EV will save the environment.
I think Rivian makes a beautiful car. I won’t be a buyer until they are more established though. My experience with Tesla and the brutal service was enough for me to steer clear of new entrants. Side note, Tesla let’s you vent the windows from the app. My Audi lets me start not only the HVAC but also the cooled seats. Love that!
Rivian won’t be failing. They might not completely take over the electric vehicle market, but the company has so much potential, such a foothold, and such an incredible project, not to mention big companies like Amazon have too much invested, to let it fail
@itp5x5 when you see nothing but comments of such grandeur from people like christopher B you should be extremally skeptical. I've seen this too many times comments like this ageing like milk. I'm not here to make you feel good or tell you some hyped up speculation. these companies dont care about you, the CEO gets paid FAT if they sell cars or not. they are set for life and at this point it really dont matter if they go bankrupt or not. the board members ARE PAID while you sit on the side literally paying them and waiting for a miracle. good luck but please start being more open minded and try not to follow the hype. typically retail traders like yourself are the last ones on the hype train as it's losing steam.
I’ve seen 3 of these this week, a pick up and suv version in different sides of town so I’m assuming they are selling very well already. They look even cooler in person because I couldn’t help but stare. It’s like a KIA Telluride & Jeep Wagoneer had a baby. Love it!
Yes one of these came up to me at a stop light. He floored it and it took off like a rocket. He was gone. It was very fast. The only thing that I don't like about it is the interior which looks very cheap for a 90 thousand dollar car. Mercedes electric car interiors is a lot more luxurious as Doug has mentioned.
This car is absolutely brilliant. Would get one in a heartbeat if I was able to. Reliability is still a question mark though, we will see how that turns out in 5 years.
@@Dntdgxjits a new car brand. Give them 10 years and they will have lots more experience. They have just had a partnership with Mercedes benz as well, so they now have some money to work with.
It has everything I want except range. Watched actual owners on TH-cam struggle to find stations and ones that did charged 80$ for 30 minutes charge time. And alot of charge stations were for customers only. Road trips aren't there yet.
The R1S review I've been waiting for! Well done! Truly one of a kind in its current class of EVs. Hopefully in future revisions they can add power folding seating as well as some kind of either deflector/cover/electromatic for the glass roof.
eh, id still rather have the model x. its cheaper, plus the doors and depending on what year you get, the top trim level is cheaper than the base model of this
Some friends of ours own electric cars, but they still rent gas cars to travel anywhere over 100 miles because of the troubles associated with electric cars and trucks
Depends where you are, which EV, and if towing... but for most places, EVs can do roadtrips just fine, and actually often cheaper and more relaxing than gas cars, if you can use AutoPilot to hugely reduce driver fatigue, use the internet streaming music, great maps, etc. It's SO much more enjoyable and less fatigue, I won't roadtrip in anything else now. What EVs do your friends own? Check Tesla supercharger map or Plugshare etc, there are LOTS of chargers nationwide and beyond- Tesla much better & more each location- but EA/EVGo etc are improving. I've gone to every national park in CA and several beyond, including Death Valley!, with no problems- did have to do some pre-planning to make sure I know charging options and "must return/find charger" battery levels... hotel free chargers in Death Valley saved me $100 in $9/gal gas in the park! (only $12 for hotel in power, they have solar.) Rivian is working to get more level2 and other chargers in more remote and adventurous spots including national/state parks, usable by any EV, which will help a lot... Yosemite already has many, they took them over. EVs can usually also charge at RV parks/powered campsites, which is helpful! Quiet AC in the car, no fumes/engine noise! If you are towing,... that can be a pain for EVs though, range hugely impacted.
Brilliant review. I’ve been watching Rivian for years in anticipation of this coming to the market. Always felt it would be a game changer. The Doug Score says it all.
I think this is a good vehicle but I look forward to the 2nd gen where they fix some of the small things. Power 2nd and 3rd row seats would be great. Dedicated buttons for heated/cooled seats. Apple Carplay/Android Auto being included is almost a must-have at this point. Hell of a first SUV from them though. Very nice. Kinda hoping they launch a full-size SUV to follow this up. R2S?
Truly amazing what all they manage to cram into this vehicle at this pricepoint. They could have cheaped out in so many places. Integrated ipad holders with chargers in the seat backs? Thats insane to see right out of the factory. BMW or Mercedes would be happy to charge you extra for stuff like that.
@@fatguy9 honestly, in a car with that much tech (like electrically operated air vents, to give an example), i dont get the "that would be unnecessary tech" argument. Especially since folding the third row manually seems to be quite a pain.
A hook under a charge port is insane? They cheaped out all over the car. Cheap on the materials. Cheap on the manual seats. Cheap on the camera quality and lack of cameras. Cheap on the all-in-one-infotainment-moneysaver. The center-return turn signal is also a straight up middle finger to consumers
I started out not loving this thing because of the front end (when I first saw it). After this review, I love it. The self-leveling thing, the air compressor, the roof panel, and lots of other stuff.
Ok this is practically perfect!! Only small thing I don’t like are that the third row seats don’t have straps to pull them back up…I’m sure they’ll add them on next years model. Otherwise, this thing is fireeee!
@@dannydaw59 It needs at least a strap. Even old Grand Caravans have it over reaching all the way in. But at the price I do agree automatic seats would be a better deal.
If Rivian keeps up these incredibly cool vehicles, they will have my support when I can afford it. so cool. if this is the future, I'm here for it. Few things though, about the ride quality: Rivian is just getting into cars so i think they deserve a little leeway, also the thing weighs over 7000 pounds so if you don't want to feel like your consistently driving a Chevy suburban boat its nicer to have it a little stiffer. I think you're reviewing from the standpoint of a buyer of a similar to that of range rover or bmw, like you mentioned but not their (in my opinion) targeted demographic, the adventuring family. they would be looking for a big SUV (3 rows, not many beamers or land rovers have that) decent off-road capability (definitely not bmw or mercs strongsuit), and efficient. i see it more as an alternative to 14 mpg bronco, or a wrangler, but with the comfort of a larger suv.
I know you said it’s not as big as people think but it’s still too large for my needs. If they ever make a smaller Bronco sized model I’d be all over it. With the SUV market as hot as it is right now you have to think they have plans for this.
I just saw my first R1T over the weekend and was shocked to see it's really no larger than my 90's Toyota T100, the idea that the R1S is even smaller is insane
What do think about the build quality? It looks ok from the first glance… I worry that without engine noise, it would sound like you were driving a bathtub around!
@@glyph241 Agreed on both ends; really love the design, but always want an engine note! It's hard to tell on video, but I think Doug is right on the money with the materials in that they're utilitarian, not upscale.. just would love to drive one to find out for myself
Thanks for the Review. I have had the R1T for 3 months, after waiting 3.5 years, and absolutely love it. I recently ordered an R1S. The review helped me to understand the differences of the 2 models and I actually learned a few things about the R1T I was not aware of. Thank Doug!
No, other than the novelty factor. For a VIP you do not need all the off-road tech, ride comfort is way more important. The seat flipping sucks and the 3rd row seats need to be bigger.
I agree about the usefulness of being able to unlock the doors with the phone, which is why I purchased a unit off Amazon for under $20 and installed it in my 20 year old car. Works great!
My car came with that. I think I used it maybe twice. It stopped working when AT&T shut down the 3G network, and I cared so little that I didn't bother replacing the modem.
Yeah but can you control your vents by touchscreen haha. Even though that takes more effort/time and costs way more to fix then sliding vents on a normal vehicle.
@@cardinaloflannagancr8929 plenty of things can be put on a screen and it's no problem, but climate controls, vents, and mirrors, should always be physical, so they can be used without having to look.
Just make sure you're in an area with cellular coverage! I heard about someone who drove up to northern Maine, and didn't take the key fob because the phone does everything. Well, the next morning, they couldn't get their car unlocked because the phone didn't have a signal! They had to get their car towed to a place with cell coverage. 🤣

@@diamondfirst9956 wtf are you actually looking for then? it has everything and more, it's not a fashion statement, it's a luxurious adventure vehicle; how gnarly do you want it to look?
I can name some things I want that it doesn't have. 1. Decent front-end styling. 2. a sunroof that opens. 3. Physical buttons for often used and safety related stuff like adjusting mirrors, etc. I hate going through on-screen menus while driving!
Agreed, the simple fact that lights, wipers, steering wheel, air vents, and mirrors are all something that you need to look at a screen to adjust/see what setting it's on is a deal breaker. More EVs should have buttons, and I hope this trend of baking everything into a screen dies
@@CarSpotter9 you can clearly see doug pushes some agenda in some of his videos, specially in videos about tesla and land rovers. He purposefully talk as little as possible about their flaws while praising their gimmicks, while on others brands he tends to be more reasonable.

Great review Doug. A lot of features similar to Tesla, but also full of terrific innovations. I actually like the front-end appearance though---very distinctive signature for a new brand. I hope they remain financially viable, the more EV manufacturers the better!
This is way better than a Tesla. And they did t copy Tesla, Tesla just has obvious ideas that all electronic cars are going to have. Tesla’s SUCKKK compared to this thing.
One thing about the Doug Score I just realized with this video, is that the Fun factor score seems to be now associated with how fast the car accelerates, which already has its own score. You can't make me believe that an electric SUV is almost as fun to drive as a McLaren F1.
Electric cars have a tenth of the moving parts that gasoline cars have, and is a MUCH simpler design. There are much less fluids and fluid lines and pumps - even putting aside the engine. It should be a great deal more reliable than a comparable ICE car.
I mean electric cars are inherently multiple times more reliable than an ice engine. But on the other hand electrical is often a big issue in reliability and they are literally all electrical. Does it balance out? Does it still take the lead? Who knows!
@@cenciende9401 Electricals are absolutely not unreliable. In fact the opposite is true. ICE vehicles have lots of pipes with lots of corrosive fluids. Their engines have explosive chemical reactions going on, which causes residue. This is why oil changes are so critical. All those moving parts and pipes and chemicals cause corrosion and degradation. Unless electrical circuits are poorly joined together causing sparking, what's the issue? Even your house has tons of electricals embedded inside walls and they ALL work happily for decades without breaking down or without needing servicing or an oil change. Even your electrical appliances like TV and fridge easily last more than a decade needing zero maintenance
I really love all of your videos, Doug! I am going to start seeing these R1S literally everywhere. The R1S is for when you want more space than an R1T with all of the extra amenities.

@@ttoommssmmiitthh The single screen thing works fine. 4+ years now in Model 3's for me. So much can be done with voice control and the rest saved to your driver profile.

How do you know its comfy
Not sure about the vents but the steering wheel and mirror positions are saved in your driver profile. you only need to do it once so it’s not that bad
yeah Id feel way safer looking at my phone WHILE DRIVING than tapping on a huge screen trying to adjust my AC vents.

@@partypooper8198 honestly, most new vehicles, ice or EV are trendy these days. Never going back to ICE though. I will miss the sounds they make!
I am just concerned if they are still in business in 5 years.
Yeah freedom regulated into submission makes us common people have less income, fewer choices and more propaganda to leverage us away from the capitolism that allowed us to live as we choose.

But also very expensive! I prefer spend my money in more valuable things instead of a car
One of the harsh lessons in owning an EV is how much the range goes down once you put more than 2-2 adults in one. Good luck towing your boat or camper. Don't even try doing it up a mountain road. And certainly not in freezing weather that will chop another 30% off your range.

I agree. It is great that they are incorporating technology which was introduced in Teslas into their cars and moving the quality and variety of EVs forward, but it was odd that these features were discussed as if they are a first.
Minimalism here is just code for "We didn't feel like spending money or time on this, but we bet you'll fall for some design language nonsense"
The air vents directions being controlled by the touch screen really annoys me

It's SO much more enjoyable and less fatigue, I won't roadtrip in anything else now. What EVs do your friends own?

Rivian is working to get more level2 and other chargers in more remote and adventurous spots including national/state parks, usable by any EV, which will help a lot... If you are towing,... that can be a pain for EVs though, range hugely impacted.
What an incredible SUV, all around vehicle! Everything seems awesome except I'm still having a rough time looking at that front end. Great video Doug!

Yea and automatic third row seats would just add cost and something to break in the future
@@fatguy9 honestly, in a car with that much tech (like electrically operated air vents, to give an example), i dont get the "that would be unnecessary tech" argument. Especially since folding the third row manually seems to be quite a pain.
Sure you can. BMW, Mercedes and Audi will gladly give you blank switches and very few features in their $100k cars.
The Germans would charge extra for round wheels if they could. They already put turn signals in some expensive option package that very few buy.
I absolutely love that this vehicle is a legitimate EV competitor to the Land Rover Defender. As a huge Jeep fan, I’m also a big fan of this SUV.
Love everything about the RS1, but especially love that you can use the flashlight like a flashlight and the bluetooth speaker like a speaker.
I started out not loving this thing because of the front end (when I first saw it). After this review, I love it. The self-leveling thing, the air compressor, the roof panel, and lots of other stuff.
Congratulations you have been selected among my lucky winner's dm to claim your prize now telegram only 👆
Ok this is practically perfect!! Only small thing I don’t like are that the third row seats don’t have straps to pull them back up…I’m sure they’ll add them on next years model. Otherwise, this thing is fireeee!
Congratulations you have been selected among my lucky winner's dm to claim your prize now telegram only 👆
A button to bring the searbacks up would be nice.
@@dannydaw59 It needs at least a strap. Even old Grand Caravans have it over reaching all the way in. But at the price I do agree automatic seats would be a better deal.
Totally agree about the boxy look, looks so much nicer 👍
Great video, as usual 👏

Love your unending energy, Doug! Always a joy to watch.
If you cant afford it now you'll never be able to. Prices are going up
I love how the r1s has a bird mating noise to attract other rivians
The relationship between Doug and Marques is a thing we must treasure
You had me at split tailgate. I love this feature and less makers now offer it.
I know you said it’s not as big as people think but it’s still too large for my needs. If they ever make a smaller Bronco sized model I’d be all over it. With the SUV market as hot as it is right now you have to think they have plans for this.
Rumor is that the R2 series from Rivian will be smaller.
@@CUclimber will be built at the new Georgia factory
@@CUclimber I googled it and that sounds like it could be a killer product. Just need to keep a good level or performance and the styling going.
@L. G. Yeah, midsize SUV in the US means XXL SUV everywhere else.
same, would prefer a smaller one
I’ll be buying one of these in a couple years. Still have a 2018 suburban. I’ve been wanting a Third row suv with decent trunk space.
I just saw my first R1T over the weekend and was shocked to see it's really no larger than my 90's Toyota T100, the idea that the R1S is even smaller is insane
smaller? Is the same size
@@jamesengland7461 4:55 Is over a foot shorter
What do think about the build quality? It looks ok from the first glance… I worry that without engine noise, it would sound like you were driving a bathtub around!
@@glyph241 Agreed on both ends; really love the design, but always want an engine note! It's hard to tell on video, but I think Doug is right on the money with the materials in that they're utilitarian, not upscale.. just would love to drive one to find out for myself
@@ryanwollum6744 just the bed length. That's it.
Thanks for the Review. I have had the R1T for 3 months, after waiting 3.5 years, and absolutely love it. I recently ordered an R1S. The review helped me to understand the differences of the 2 models and I actually learned a few things about the R1T I was not aware of. Thank Doug!
This will make a great VIP transport, airport shuttle and the list goes on....I'm liking the innovation in the EV Space!
No, other than the novelty factor. For a VIP you do not need all the off-road tech, ride comfort is way more important. The seat flipping sucks and the 3rd row seats need to be bigger.
Congratulations you have been selected among my lucky winner's dm to claim your prize now telegram only 👆
Douge. 'Not that big, ...it shorter than...' . Irish person after reading the small print. (It 510 cm long. ). That SUV longer than my drive way.
I agree about the usefulness of being able to unlock the doors with the phone, which is why I purchased a unit off Amazon for under $20 and installed it in my 20 year old car. Works great!
Which one? Might look into.
Gosh I want the R1T so badly, but this is equally impressive. If I didn't have motorcycles to haul, this would be my dream vehicle right now. Awesome review as always, Doug!
Trailers are cheap and they're way easier to get the bikes on and off of
WOW! That's some endorsement! Best car Doug has EVER tested!

Awesome review, thank you! I'm taking delivery of an R1S in a few weeks and it's been great to see this followup from the R1T video some months ago.
For me the front is the best part. It’s super unique. And i love the lights across the front. The back looks kinda boring but the car itself is amazing. Also where’s the front cup holders? 😀
I’m actually impressed how complete the Rivian suv is. Looks very well appointed and well thought out
I don't like it, inside and out looks like typical SUV no uniqueness, nothing fancy, just nice electric SUV, that's all
@@diamondfirst9956 it’s definitely not fancy. Just basic and functional. I agree.
@@diamondfirst9956 See, that sounds like a good thing to me 🤷🏻♂️
@@diamondfirst9956 wtf are you actually looking for then? it has everything and more, it's not a fashion statement, it's a luxurious adventure vehicle; how gnarly do you want it to look?
Built in air compressor came standard in my 1986 Pontiac 6000. Funny how 36 years later, this is an awesome feature not many cars have.
You have it to keep the car off the bump stops. Nothing special.

Unbiased is a bit of a stretch
@@marciliojunior4919 How?
@@CarSpotter9 you can clearly see doug pushes some agenda in some of his videos, specially in videos about tesla and land rovers. He purposefully talk as little as possible about their flaws while praising their gimmicks, while on others brands he tends to be more reasonable.

Honestly my favorite electric vehicle to come out. Not fully on board with EVs but this is so cool!
This and the new polestar are my favourites!
Great video and cool rig ......Very surprising about the lack of blind spot detection and adequate & high quality cameras.....Heck, my 2008 Volvo XC90 had blind spot detection. I hope Rivian does well and has a future as these first models are appealing.
wait, what? rivian does have blind spot detection, in the mirrors.

One of Rivians locations is almost done being built in the same business complex I work at. I get to see all the cool stuff they’ve been working on and it’s awesome!!
Doug... the type of guy to put the third row up from the cargo area.... not simply moving the second row forward and reaching in and lifting it into place.
Great review Doug. A lot of features similar to Tesla, but also full of terrific innovations. I actually like the front-end appearance though---very distinctive signature for a new brand. I hope they remain financially viable, the more EV manufacturers the better!
I was getting annoyed at how excited Doug was getting about features that rivian blatantly copied from Tesla without giving Tesla credit.
This is way better than a Tesla. And they did t copy Tesla, Tesla just has obvious ideas that all electronic cars are going to have. Tesla’s SUCKKK compared to this thing.
Yeah, it even blows 'yer nose 'n wipes 'yer ass....LoL
@@Kr0n1k8 what?
I see these everywhere, I live where they are made and they look great. And the design hasn’t gotten old
One thing about the Doug Score I just realized with this video, is that the Fun factor score seems to be now associated with how fast the car accelerates, which already has its own score. You can't make me believe that an electric SUV is almost as fun to drive as a McLaren F1.
It also factors off-road capability
id imagine that the r1s is way more fun to drive off road than a mclaren f1
@@GimmehMyMoney You're right! I missed that one
Bruh, it also handles well and has 800+ horsepower, and you can drift it off road, how can it not have a high fun factor?
the r1s is actually pretty fun, offroad capability, great acceleration,
Long term reliability. Looking forward to the 1 year, 50,000 mile reviews 😀
Man, that’s going to take a lot of charging.
I still trust this more than any Land rover or BMW.
I really love all of your videos, Doug! I am going to start seeing these R1S literally everywhere. The R1S is for when you want more space than an R1T with all of the extra amenities.
The R1S is for when you have $90k burning a hole in your pocket or you want to long after a vehicle they can't produce enough of, or the company will be in Chapter 11 before they can fill all their orders.
