    Seeing Grant Imahara in this hurts with his passing. I am sure when he recorded this he did not think in less than 10 years time he would no longer be alive. RIP Grant, I enjoyed watching you on Mythbusters.

    3dfx started those gpus, and before that there were others. Nvidia simply bought them out later down the road.

  • @midnightshade32
    @midnightshade32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    This is so wrong.... the part about inventing the gpu... 3DFX invented the PC hardware accelerator add-in card, it required a 2d card as well.. Ever hear of Voodoo graphics. The voodoo banshee was their first all in one card... but it was a gpu and this was before nvidia came on the scene. 3dfx also invented SLI, which nvidia now uses the name, it involves having two grfx cards hooked together rendering alternating pixel rows. Voodoo used an Api called glide which most games at the time ran flawlessly on.. It was essentially an Open-GL like api that had 3dfx specific instructions. It rocked for any Unreal based game and games like Thief and Deus ex, need for speed etc.. ran better on glide. DirectX was crap until DX7, which didn't hit until 2000. 3dfx made a bad investment, bought STB and started making thier own cards instead of letting other companies make the cards, like they did for the voodoo 1, and 2. Nvidia and Ati let others make the cards for them. This investment killed 3dfx and they missed releasing the 4 gpu 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 (I owned a 2gpu voodoo 5 5500 at the time).. They ran out of cash, and went bankrupt in winter 2000. Nvidia then bought all their assets and their engineers, as well as the rights to their technologies. It's why nvidia uses SLI and ati ues the phrase crossfire and not SLI.
    Everything else about this video is right but the part about nvidia inventing the gpu, as they did not. It's disingenuous for them to say that, and disregard the history that 3DFX started all those years ago... I remember because I just got out of high school when the first voodoo card came out to market. Voodoo 2 was a killer for GL Quake and Quake 2 back in the day!

      @janadriaanjansenvanvuuren6502 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it depends on perspective right ? I mean if 3DFX was bought completely by Nvidia and most if not all engineers then went over to Nvidia then the original inventors are now part of Nvidia.
      And if they call themselves Nvidia now, then in a way they were the inventors.
      But I agree with you on them making claims that aren't quite true. It's really not endearing.
      (Edit : Fixed typo investors to inventors)

      Dude, i was yelling at my screen whenthey said "in 1999 the first GPU was created". thats SUCH BS. the 3dfx Voodoo and the VirGe Diamond were from 1997-98 i think

      Yup, I was thinking the same thing! I still remember getting my first Voodoo 1 and then playing GL Quake. It was the most incredible gaming experience of my life. As great as 4K gaming, Virtual Reality and other neat moments have been/will be, nothing will ever top that first Voodoo 1.

    • @midnightshade32
      @midnightshade32 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dargone007 yep the transition to real 3d was one of those turning points, and it was a big one. Similar to going from SD to HD in recent times. Yeah the switch from doom style to full 3d in quake and other games of the time was amazing and I don't think many realize how awesome it was as a lot of people were on consoles or on non 3d enabled pcs at the time.

    • @macdeluxe733

      @@janadriaanjansenvanvuuren6502 Nope. 3DFX & NVidia were competing for a long time before 3DFX died and was bought out. I can remember the first time I saw 3DFX running (it was a daughter board that connected to a standard VGA card) and it was mind blowing. The N64 was the benchmark at the time and the 3DFX matched it. It was awesome: 640x480x16@60fps with hardware accelerated texture mapping/filtering. A quick look on wiki kind of validates this, the first NVidia card I can remember taking notice of was the RIVA TNT and that was released in ~1998 and, tbh, the 32-bit colour was its biggest selling point, other than that it wasn't really game changing. The first 3DFX Voodoo was available in '96.

    SGI invented the GPU.
    3dfx brought it en masse to the PC.

    • @3dmaster205
      @3dmaster205 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strictly speaking it was a collaboration between Nintendo and SGI; Nintendo new what they wanted for the then Ultra 64, and tasked SGI with actually creating the hardware.
      SGI subsequently didn't want to go in consumer electronics themselves focusing on their high-end graphical workstations, but the engineers saw the money to be made, quit SGI and started 3Dfx.

    "Aug 31st 1999 NVIDIA invents the world's first GPU..."
    Sigh... I know this is advertisement and marketing bullshit, but you can say "one of the world's first GPUs" and still it would sound fine, because otherwise it is factually incorrect.

      It may not be the first, but most of the "GPUs" your talking about that came before hand were mainly graphics accelerators, Nivida was the first company to use make a dedicated GPU running off OpenGL/DirectX which is the point they made in the video.

      They didn't make that very clear at all, people viewing the video may not make that same interpretation ... and thus it is somewhat misleading. I'd wager it was worded the way it was purposely to make NVidia look better, and it's why i turned off the video half way through.

    Nice. As a beginner PC gamer what might you recommend in terms of peripherals? I was thinking keep it basic to get used to the platform, particularly cuz i play a lot of shooters.
    Maybe a Kinzu V2 (nice compact form factor, basic, reliable looking.) and a apex raw, and some mousepad.. not sure where from

    just a question,from which year and later the pc surpassed consoles?

    • @jadeenzzz
      @jadeenzzz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      People say that around the time the Playstation 2 came out console became weaker than gaming PCs, which was in 2000. Some may say back when the Playstation 1 was new PCs surpassed consoles. I think the latter because of the powerful GPUs that came out that made games run faster and look better than their PS1, N64, and/or Sega Saturn counterparts.

    • @videakias3000
      @videakias3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually when I say surpassed consoles I mean when it became the master race it is now?was it always possible to upgrade it's hardware as it is now?

    • @Etheoma
      @Etheoma 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DestructiveBurn Look I'm a PC gamer but I think mobile gaming with AR and VR is the future we are talking 15 - 20 years down the line here but if you can get a VR headset down to the size of a pair of glasses and we can expect mobiles to be in 15 - 20 years to be far more powerful than today's PC.
      With cloud gaming and the cellular network getting ever stronger etc the mobile is going to the main platform for gaming, Its going to be a while though.
      And Nvidia and Intel know it as why Intel is selling its mobile CPU's at a loss and Nvidia is developing the Tegra mobile chips so that when its able to happen they will be there at the fore front.
      AMD well it needs to make money right now so it needs to be focusing on the hear and now to secure its future, looking ahead is a luxury it cannot afford.

      When Crysis was out, it was the next "step." I mean not just graphic fidelity but gameplay physics. "Can it run Crysis?" That was the quote that just gave me a "wake up" call in terms of "wowing" me to take another look at PC gaming. At least on a consumer level, at the time I was tight on a budget for school---so I couldn't build a PC capable of running Crysis. Not that the technology existed at the time for mainstream budgets; of even running the game.

    this is more of a marketing video than anything else. I am an Nvidia user but the history is very selective and quite innacurate. 0 mentions of ATI/AMDs very real contributions to the industry and some would say larger contributions to the industry, and 1999 was nowhere NEAR when the 1st gpu came out. it may have been the first to coin the term GPU but dedicated graphics accelerators had been available for nearly 15 years previously.

    • @Rohkii
      @Rohkii 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They mean the first dedicated graphics card using OpenGL/DirectX, so the first mainly "stand alone" type of card, I agree, AMD didnt come into the industry until 2002 really, and until the last couple years has never been up to par.
      It would have been nice if they included AMD's mantle, even if its buggy yet.
