someone who was born in 84, grew up on 90s and early 2000 computer builds, and been subscribed to Linus since 2009… this is easily my favourite ltt video of the year
13 years ago in the NCIX days, Linus helped me unlock my Phenom Ii X3 to an X4. For the $400 invested in the entire build, this was the worst and best computer I've ever built. So much so I keep it set up in my basement to play D3.
On one hand, I agree that it's great to see Luke in more videos. However, I'm gonna say that the perfect person to include in this video would be Sarah. She would've had _so much to say_ about all the hideous design and color choices.
I loved the part at the very end where Luke said to hell with it, we are going down memory lane the meeting can be a couple minutes late. Yvonne and Luke were the best parts of Linus when it came to LMG. Without their unwavering support and endless dedication, we would never have the tech media giant we enjoy today.
I had no idea you and Yvonne have been together for so long. It's honestly so amazing seeing you two grow up together and being into the same things. I loved this video.
Most of my married friends who are in stable long term relationships either met each other in high school or university. Seems that entering adulthood with a partner builds a strong bond, understanding and respect when done well.
WTF are you talking about? Their faces literally did not change or react at all. They TOTALLY did NOT even catch on to the accidental innuendo Linus just said. Completely unhinged comment.
I remember seeing Linus and his ridiculous AC-cooled computer at CapLan way back then. I thought that he was still using his massively-overclocked Barton CPU at that time, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. After he lugged it in he had to run the air conditioner for a while to chill the loop before he could turn it on. What a machine it was.
Linus found an absolute unit of a wife, good for him! Always makes me super happy to see two people deeply in love with each-other, super cool to see the window of time into the past PC tech too. The neon/UV stuff was very much so a culture shock.
Oh man, the early to mid 2000's were such a ridiculous time for custom PC stuff. I can't imagine what it must look like to someone who grew up on post- like, 2010 or so actual nice stuff.
@@gordon7478 Especially the cold cathode lighting. Which used to draw a non trivial amount of power iirc. And that brief time where 'EL wire' got used instead.
I really think Linus should do a retro build with the helix coil cooler and demonstrate to fans how to paint everything. That would be such a great episode.
Too late now, but I would genuinely enjoy an April Fool's joke of Linus renaming the company to Linus Paint Tips for the day and posting a full-blown painting video of various stuff. They could up it by DBRAND sponsoring it with their new home wallpapers.
Honestly, this is great. I haven't built PCs for long, but seeing what other people had to go through before my time, it's a humbling experience for me for sure
TBH, at that age I'd be researching components for weeks before making a purchase, I remember my first 4 motherboards by name too because of how many times I read about them and then walking to the computer store with a piece of paper with the correct mobo name.
@@jeremyg9305 Damn, true! If you are making upgrade once for a very king time, for not youre money, you better be sure that it is going to be good! :D so you read it so many times, check it, and then OC it, etc, you can have these models next to youre name on grave :D
Linus just has an absurd memory/knowledge of PC components. There's a This Is video where Austin Evans quizzes Linus on old technology to show my point. The video is titled "I showed You My Tech Tip" for any curious.
3 things to mention here: - These builds were not trash but just according to the time they were built. We make fun of it now but I have seen far worse from that time. - What rly sucked were the desks. Holy crap Linus! Just dont spend a fortune on UV stuff and get a desk that can fit your peripherals :D - Yvonne must really love Linus
TBF I had a very similar "PC" desk. they were everywhere at the time and sucked absolute ass. The idea was that the PC is the secondary thing on the desk and therefore your primary space is important, but neither shelf was really usable for its purpose. However, the sales pitch very much appealed to my parents, so I had a hard time getting something else until later. :D No escuse for the folding desks though. Jeez Linus.
LOL my desk barely fits my mouse, keyboard and monitor. My Thermaltake View 71 case sits on a end table at the end of my desk. It would likely shatter the glass on the desk anyway.
This computer ricer culture must have passed me by entirely. I built my own Athlon XP computer with much the same specs as Linus' one, but in a plain beige box with good old red 'n' yellow cables. And those speakers. I bought my first set of 5.1 speakers around the same time.... and I'm still using them. Creative Inspire 5300 baby. You can't say they weren't built to last. Dropping 600 bucks on speakers would have boggled my mind.
My favorite video from you guys ever, thanks for the nostalgia. I'm so glad that i'm not the only one that just happens upon parts from work. Perk of working in enterprise quality stuff I guess. Makes me really miss the good old days of building my first rigs. Man, when I say those sleeved IDE cables, like yep, I had those too, lol. This one gets a super thanks. I also had a Logitech G15, loved that keyboard. Display that would show in-game stats in WoW, amazing. I keep editing this comment because I keep thinking of more things, love it lol.
I'll probably never user my G15 again but I can't bear throwing it out so it still makes it through every move with me and it safely stored in my garage.
I love how as someone who got into PC gaming around the same time, I'm totally in the Luke camp of "I dig this". There's something about mid to late 2000's mods that just hit differently.

@@sandboy5880 The amount of people that for example took up space like linus at yvonnes parents is more common than those that can do the work, have or can gain the required skills and wills for the timeframe, where building an industry leader in an emerging space of profit is doable even with those skills and wills. Truthfully I started watching this episode thinking this was one of those episodes TH-camrs don't have anything interesting and just do anything to push a video real quick and finished telling myself this could actually easily pass for one of the best videos I've watched on LTT. That's a big complement considering the kind of nerdy stuff you guys put up. Great storyline!
It would be amazing if you guys made a series about "remastering" old PC builds you did in the past where you build everything with modern hardware while preserving the original vibe of the builds (or the entire setup).
Make sure you tell Yvonne thank you from all of us! It's hard to say what path your life would've went down without her supporting your tech obsession, but the outcome is exactly perfect and what needed to happen!
Linus is so lucky to have had parents supportive of his PC passion. My parents were like "This computer thing is going to ruin your life" and literally forced me away from it all the time.
This mindset from some parents always boggled my mind. Computers and tech rule the world now, and anyone with any foresight saw it coming years in advance, but so many other people looked at the same data and actually said "NAH THIS IS CLEARLY A PASSING FAD." Wtf? 🤷♂️
@@volkerball85 you're assuming they 'looked at the same data', when it's more like they never bothered to check and just couldn't see the world past their livelihoods. Pretty easy for someone who does nothing most of their lives apart from office work or manual labor to see this "computer" thing, and this "internet" and be unable to see how that could ever affect them.
@@DanielFerreira-ez8qd That's more what I meant, though. I didn't mean actual data/figures, but rather just that it should've been at least somewhat obvious (imo at least) that computers were set to change the entire world just by looking around oneself, especially as the technology began to spread into homes and businesses. I don't always choose my words as well as I could, but you're spot on.
I didn't know that NCIX started Hardware Canucks... They obviously no longer own them now. Would be good to have a documentary series about the history of PC enthusiast TH-cam with early 2000's Forum's & Website history Wiki style. I enjoy computers so much, they have been a huge part of my life the last 25 years. Surprised I never heard Linus & Luke talk about the this topic before on the WAN Show.
I would absolutely love to watch the history of the janky rigs before there was money in the obscure. If not for the nerds of the 90s, I don’t think PCs would be where they are today
I've been around since LTT had ~30k subs and was in other dark corners of the PC enthusiast internet a few years before that. I had no clue NCIX owned Hardware Canucks. Too bad NCIX was bad at business, because they did some interesting things with media.
I work in the electronics industry. I'll never know all of what happened behind closed doors between companies that duked it out back in the day, but I have heard a few industry tales and it's glorious. I'm sad I'll never hear the end of it, but I'm glad I'll be making my own for the future lol
@11:00 no joke... I bought my house when i was just turning 20 years old. One of the first things i did, bought some logitech 5.1 sound system. To hang the speakers up, i took some 4x8" plexiglas covers from the dumpster. Found some little metal pieces, bent them to 45 degree angles, drilled holes on the end. Mounted them to my walls in my room, 2 speakers mount on top, 2 from the bottom. Now, 20 years later... they are still in use, granted they have 2cm of dust on them, but it still works. Same speakers too!
Watching this explains a lot with Linus' behavior in the early years where he'd freak out over the cost of things (before they got everything for free). I'm the same way, extremely frugal, because I also grew up in a family without a lot of money.
I remember the black light setup, had a few of my own. Crazy looking back and thinking about what I thought was cool then. Of course back then there wasn't RGB lighting so we had to do what was available.
Yvonne and her parents are obviously amazing people. Not a chance in hell I'd be able to take up that much space in my girlfriend's room or in her parents' family room.
Even with how many things have been going wrong with the tech house, I think it's safe to say Linus' kids are gonna grow up with slightly less janky tech setups than their dad did 😂
The more I learn about Linus and Yvonne's history the more convinced I am that she can see the future or something. Girl had no reason to stick by Linus as hard as she did but damn did it pay off.
This cracks me up so bad. In my awkward teen years, I used to always see Linus on G4 and his early YT days. It's funny seeing how far things have come, changed... but Linus hasn't. Never change. Alex, Riley, Jake and everyone else are all great. You could do nothing and let all your employees host, work - but you still do it. One of the biggest things that has me coming back - the feel hasn't changed after all these years. It doesn't feel like some big commercial YT channel. Even though you're a multi-million dollar business now. Enjoy the same goofiness that has always been present- 10+ years now, shaking my head as you vertically build PCs, and the outlandish things you love doing with tech. Never change. PS. You never looked like a lesbian, don't let some stupid kids bully you on the internet.
@@KaiFulci yeah I don’t remember that and I used to watch g4 constantly. I assume he would have been on the screensavers? Maybe attack of the show. God that was such a great time to be alive.

This is an odd thought, maybe it's because of the kind of headspace that I'm in right now, but seeing this video made me think of that the only thing I wished I had that Linus does is someone who loves and supports him as much as Yvonne does. It's actually amazing. She's amazing.
A woman like that is top tier and quite rare. Anyone can find someone who loves them, but that level of almost unconditional support is extremely rare. Most women might have said “babe this is a bad idea. Just get a job”.
Don't give up hope. Walk tall, smile, and be your genuine self. Be brave when you attempt to approach and introduce yourself. "getting someone's number" is nearly impossible nowadays as far as a genuine approach is concerned, start small and ask for their social media profiles. You got this.💝
LOL, Linus, I know we are ages apart, but this trip down memory lane was great! A lot of the components were the same in both of our builds. The desk from 2005, I finally retired mine of that exact same one last year. The roasting you took from the dynamic duo was light-hearted and entertaining. While you were breaking ground on water cooling, I was drawing out the life of computers for my friends, recycling parts from my previous beasts. I am so glad you are the success you are today, and still grounded to a large extent. Kudos to you and Yvonne for such an inventive relationship.
Love how Linus was impressed by 24 inch because I was as well back in the day. I remember flexing my 17 inch monitor, then going to 24 and just slamming on everyone. Now I'm sitting here going down memory lane on a 1440p 34 inch 21:9 and wondering if I should get a 4k next. Even though price gouging as of late may have left a bad taste in all of our mouths, can we just take a step back and realize how lucky we are tech has come so far?
This works only if the business is camera facing. if it is literally any other business no boss would let an employee be a jerk to them. I'm certain Linus sometimes has to be a hard boss but it wouldn't be on camera.
@@trashboat2821 There is a difference between fun casual banter and being a jerk, in all my jobs (Only have had three of them so not the largest sample size) I was able to get away with some light banter with most of my bosses and they were chill about it.
After watching this video you know what? I'm super happy to see Linus had the support and encouragment to pursue this passion for tech in such a way from everyone around him: his parents, Yvonne, Yvonne's parents, etc.
11:43 I can say with 100% certainty that software is Nero Express (probably version 5). You can make out the burning CD in the top right corner and the letter X for eXpress.
I like how Linus blends the ads into the videos instead of assuming I'll watch a 2min ad at the start of video(or the end which is a lot of faith in the viewers) for something I probably won't buy or even afford if I was interested.
A popular mod back in the day that I also did was taking the giant IDE ribbon cables and pulling the strands apart, spiral twisting them and then going around with electrical tape. Make them much shorter and really rigid and harder to manage :D
Great video. Brought back memories of all the super-jank stuff I used to do to my computers. I once built a GPU slot cooler out of at least 20-30 486 CPU size fans. That thing was a monstrosity. My first water cooling setup had a waterblock that I made myself out of some random piece of aluminum that just happened to be the right size. I just had to smooth out the side that mated with the CPU. No fins inside of it, but I did have the water being pumped right into the center of the lid. The lid was just a piece of aluminum that I cut round to size and used silicone to glue it to the top of the block. The pump I used was a fish tank filter pump. I still have that waterblock.
Yvonne is a legend for putting up and supporting all this. A super rare quality in a lady. My lady built me a garden office, so my geek garden stays out of the house. I am very thankful. Question @Linus what games did you play with Yvonne in those early days?
omg 24:42 I have that standing lamp but in white. I'm dead rn. its from my Mom when she was in college in the 80s. I fricken love it, I cannot believe you had the same thing.
As someone who came of age around the same time in the PC world, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I remember splicing IDE cables to bundle them... and inevitably have data corruption...
The part of this video that's got me the most envious is Linus's history with his wife. ❤ My god man, that relationship history?! It's enough to make a single guy self-reflect on what his priorities should be. Your ascetic tastes as a youth may have been questionable, but your eye for quality people has clearly been strong for a long time. I'm jealous, I really am. I'd trade all my tech training/certification experience just to be half as good as you are at "finding good people to surround yourself with". Making friends & relationships is infinitely harder and less straightforward than even the most anti-consumer tech product repair. At least with tech, you've got guides, forums & manuals/design docs. Relationship advice & "help" is 89% scams 1% re-packaged general self-help and 10% cults. The remaining 1% is all your friends & family suggesting the same handful of Apps that you've either previously used or tried to avoid due to a reasonable desire to not waste time in bad app environments.
Exactly, this video made me realize how important it is to not pursue a potential spouse based on just looks or material wealth, but to find someone who can build you up and support you regardless of what happens.
Linus, We're roughly the same age and I was an "extreme overclocker" back in the day too. Maybe a video on our old school cooling techniques? Bong (waterfall) coolers, phase change, pond pump, Pontiac Fiero heater core, and questionable copper blocks galore. It would be cool to show how creative we had to be when the market for cooling products just wasn't there.
Was a fun time for cooling, there was always a few cpu's with huge amount of headroom for overclocking. My Pentium D950 around 2006 was 3.4ghz stock, 5.1ghz stable overclock, and i think people were setting records of over 6ghz on it. Around 2 years later moved to the QX6850 which was insanely pricey, had huge amount of a voltage range, but was a pox to get it from 3ghz stock to a stable 3.6ghz.
That Arctic Cooling GPU cooler was legendary. I had one installed on my old 9800SE (soft modded to 9800Pro) and it worked so much better than the stock cooler.
My brother had the same Logitech mouse with the swappable / rechargeable batteries. It was a great idea, because you can just swap batteries and keep playing. However, my brother was also lazy, so in the end he would just end up with 2 dead batteries.
The key takeaway from all these "started from the bottom now we here" videos is just how much of a saint Yvonne is.

11:44 i think that is nero burning a cd or so...ahhh..the memories
I remember seeing Linus and his ridiculous AC-cooled computer at CapLan way back then. I thought that he was still using his massively-overclocked Barton CPU at that time, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. After he lugged it in he had to run the air conditioner for a while to chill the loop before he could turn it on. What a machine it was.
Everybody gangster until Linus shows up to the LAN with a dedicated AC unit attached to his PC.

I really think Linus should do a retro build with the helix coil cooler and demonstrate to fans how to paint everything. That would be such a great episode.

Paint a noctua fan for extra trolliness
Honestly, this is great. I haven't built PCs for long, but seeing what other people had to go through before my time, it's a humbling experience for me for sure
The fact that Linus remembers this like it was yesterday is impressive - including the motherboard model names.
Yet the « worst pcs » are actually better than mine
Or he's probably only pulled up the pictures he can account for and/or could research.
Linus just has an absurd memory/knowledge of PC components. There's a This Is video where Austin Evans quizzes Linus on old technology to show my point. The video is titled "I showed You My Tech Tip" for any curious.
3 things to mention here:
- These builds were not trash but just according to the time they were built. We make fun of it now but I have seen far worse from that time.
- What rly sucked were the desks. Holy crap Linus! Just dont spend a fortune on UV stuff and get a desk that can fit your peripherals :D
- Yvonne must really love Linus
TBF I had a very similar "PC" desk. they were everywhere at the time and sucked absolute ass. The idea was that the PC is the secondary thing on the desk and therefore your primary space is important, but neither shelf was really usable for its purpose. However, the sales pitch very much appealed to my parents, so I had a hard time getting something else until later. :D
No escuse for the folding desks though. Jeez Linus.
LOL my desk barely fits my mouse, keyboard and monitor. My Thermaltake View 71 case sits on a end table at the end of my desk. It would likely shatter the glass on the desk anyway.
I mean…she DOES have three kids with him.
I'm currently using a $20 folding table from Walmart as my desk with a computer that cost over $5,000 and an LG OLED as a monitor on top of it
This computer ricer culture must have passed me by entirely.

4:45 I had one of those Zalman coolers and it worked better than expected and I loved the raw copper look.
9:25 "I used it to lubricate the back door" and nobody had a word to say about it. What a missed opportunity.
