In this episode of Vox Almanac, Vox’s Phil Edwards explores the history of a common default keyboard configuration among gamers. Though there’s an inherent logic to WASD - it just works well - there’s also a story behind how it became a near-universal standard.
Dennis “Thresh” Fong was one of the first pro gamers to go mainstream playing the first person shooter Quake. By doing so, he set a standard for other gamers to aspire to, including his key control configuration. He discovered that for a new era in which the mouse and keyboard needed to work together, WASD was a great way to do it. Shortly after that, programmers incorporated his schema into their own games, making it a default that millions - whether they knew Thresh or not - would play with. WASD became a standard for a lot of games because of one superstar’s amazing record with it.

and there i first thought .. wtf .. the best placement is just, to get the most keys without hurting yourself .... back in the 90 .. k. there wasnt realy many commands ...
but if i look back at my former wow time ... i norm. used "rdfg" to move (along with the mouse) ... so i could maintaine ~75+ shortcuts, with just one hand, mostly only capped only throughout the ingame global cooldown, while the other hand was free to operate the mouse ....
as sayed .. it just depends on, what you really need to archive and wich shortcuts/keys, you def. have to reach .. or how many of them in an given time

1. As someone who touch types I can put my hands in the same spot for typing and gaming.
2. I have access to more buttons
3. I just find it more comfortable even if I’m not using more buttons or typing.

Not everyone left handed people use the arrow keys or something like WASD on the left side, because WASD is to close to our left hand and it kinda hurts.

In 80s computers, not everyone had joysticks. keyboards were usually used. The arrow keys were used for player 2 a lot of the time, while player1 was on the left side of the keyboard, on WASD. Had nothing to do with Thresh, no matter what this video (that seems to have been made to raise his profile ahead of him selling his company) says.

@@MrKirbinio You're right that Thresh wasn't the first guy to use WASD. It was somewhat common around the time, but Thresh popularised it massively. We could've easily used a different control scheme as standard if not for the influence of Thresh.

the first time I used WASD was when my brother's friend brought over an FPS game maker to the house and said "when you test your game, you can't move with the arrow keys. You use W to walk forward, because W stands for walk, and then the keys around it move you the other directions"
The reason why I always did the WASD keys is because when I was younger. I can reach the space bar with my left thumb, and control my character. Using my right hand to use a mouse. I could never reach the space bar with my right hand’s thumb.

Additional reasons to why WASD is the best choice around:
1. It's between to easily identifiable keys: CAPS LOCK is huge and F has the small bump on it.
2. It's surrounded by all kinds of other keys that can be assigned to anything else.
3. You can keep pressed CTRL or ALT and SPACE while using WASD.
4. It's in the perfect position to keep both hands at arm's length.

We used to play multiplayer games on a single keyboard and WASD was the 2nd player position in many games, like Star Control (1990). Some gamers preferred the 2nd position and when keyboard+mouse fps-games became a thing, they did use WASD for those too. So it's not like he invented it though he had a role in making it default.
Some games had 4-player mode and we often played those with just one keyboard. It was intense, four people sitting right next to each other and sharing the same keyboard. The code of honor was not to physically touch each other, but that didn't prevent "elbow tactics" completely...
I was never a big fan of 3D shooters, but after I heard about people using WASD I decided to try it out in my 2D emulated games and now I like that I can simply use my left hand for walking and right hand for jumping and attacking like on the original consoles.

WASD seems the most logical choice because of where it's positioned on the keyboard, near shift for running, space for jumping and number keys for weapons, so I'm pretty sure we would get to this setup eventually even without this guy.
In early fps games including Doom you used the arrow keys and mouse to move around and shoot which was a bit clunky. Half-LIfe is when WASD was standardized industry wide for FPS games and as you all know Counter Strike emerged as a mod for HL and created the E-sports scene. Non-WASD configurations still stuck around until the mid 2000s though for a lot of games. WoW helped pushed those genres to switch over to WASD.

I use Colemak too but I have to admit that Workman is the best for this purpose: It literally uses DASH.
I find there are two ways to play Doom 1 & 2:
1- WASD + mouse.
2- WASD + 8456 (circular movement and 8 to shoot)

I disagree with c for Crouch. At least for me it's always Ctrl to crouch and for games where you can prone its V. C for crouch ist uncomfortable. And most games don't even have a prone feature, so ctrl would've unused.
Why gamers use WASD to move? Arrow keys are on the right, WASD is on the left. You need your mouse to free look and quick turn, and you need your right hand to use the mouse (or at least that's true to right handed people like me). Plus, there's other keys all very close to WASD, which allow you to quickly press other bindings in game.

I've been using a keyboard and mouse since Doom, around 1993. I had to move the keyboard to the far left, to use the arrows with the left hand. I never understood how people could just use the keyboard. To strafe I pressed the right mouse button.
