thank you for an exceptionally done video! An overlooked genre for certain. I personally own the Vancouver title and impressed by the graphics. As for Summer, the London version looks like the title to own. Altho, for PS2 standards I was impressed with Athens, years ago. Quality content, brother.
I hope they'll make a realistic looking Olympic videogame again someday. I really loved playing Athens. I get why they make the new onces so arcady, but back in the days it felt like so much more realistic. I liked to master all the sports, get the highest scores possible and play with friends and family. A lot of hours spend on Athens. Especially on the horse jumping!
Good job with this video my friend. I rarely watch these kinds of things but it was a great subject for me, and you did it well. Thank you for taking the time
Me and my cousins would play bejing non stop and all of us would max out the world records every time. My hands are still paying for the damage done by the discus throw though.
Just like the Olympics in real life, Olympic video games just don't seem to generate the interest or money they once did. I have always loved both, and been playing Olympic video games since the Atari 2600 days. That being said, I agree 100% with your analysis of the Olympic video games. games.
Yeah they really fly under the radar now. A shame since it feels like in this day and age, if it did generate enough interest, we could get a really strong video game out of the Olympics.
I loved Vancouver 2010 as a kid and set most of the global event records on the XBox. It was one of the only games I was ever anywhere near the top of global leaderboards. 10 years later I then got a great job at the studio that produced it (albeit after a rebrand), so that game will always be special to me
Was reminiscing the Torino 2006 game and this showed up as a recommended video. Really glad I watched the whole thing, amazing job with the production, entertainment and effort. As I’m watching a lot of the Olympics in Beijing right now I would really enjoy a new winter game coming out… Maybe in four years? 🙏 Thanks again for the splendid video.
Great video, very insightful and entertaining. I love Olympic games and this was a great video cause I've never really had a chance to compare them. You deserve way more views. Greetings from Poland!
I really liked London 2012. The control scheme was right (compared to earlier games). In my opinion Athens 2004 was the deepest, but I had troubles with button mashing. The Torino and Vancouver games were great also. I have Tokyo and play it a lot with my son. If we could get back to the London game model, I would get it in a heartbeat. Winning gold included anthems (though short) but that was huge.
I do hope we see another full game in the future! The more they can move away from button mashing and make controls more timing and precision based the better.
Have a bunch of these but don't want arcade feel. Summer: enjoyed Athens, Beijing & London all for slightly different events with an Olympics made up from combination of the 3. Winter: Torino is my most played PS2 game (I love Biathlon as a sport ) didn't enjoy Vancouver as much although can be combined with Torino for a winter games.
I just wanna say keep up the good work you have been doing! I've just discovered this channel and I'm surprise you don't have more subscribers. Congratulations on your Playstation collection 👌👌 Keep posting videos like this!! 👏👏👏👏👏
You said the 100m "didn't exactly prove to be challenging" but the dude with P1 above his head was dead last, unless I missed something haha Great video though bro
Nagano '98 was my first olympic game ever and holds a special place in my heart. And I think that it actually still holds up! Ski Jumping was my favourite and you definately use the wrong buttons. :D
I love playing Olympics licensed video games, the 1st one I played was Barcelona 1992 and Lillehammer 1994 on the SEGA Mega Drive and then Athens 2004 from the PlayStation era, I never got the chance to play from Atlanta 1996 to Tokyo 2020 (Except Athens 2004) but I will get there really soon. Did you know that the soundtrack from Sydney 2000 was composed by Jonathan Colling from Octagon Music Productions, he composed music for the Colin McRae Rally games, no wonder the soundtrack from the Sydney 2000 olympics sounded familiar! Great work on this video! Greetings from Portugal.
International Track & Field on PS1 was my favorite Summer Game, and Nagano 98 on PS1 was my favorite Winter Game (if I can only choose from Playstation). Lillehammer 94 on the SNES was by far my favorite Winter Game on any platform. Love that you used the Downhill sountrack in the intro of this video. 👍
Hi, what is the name of the background music that you hear at minute 33? Your video is great. I didn't know that there were several Olympic games released for PSone. I only knew about the one from Sydney 2000.
Would like to see a video on all The major football tournament games for the PlayStation. From France 98 and Belgium-Netherlands 00 to Brazil 14 and Euro 12*
By the way, have you played ESPN International Winter 2002? Its on PS2/Xbox, and is definitely superior to SLC 2002. As it boasts more events, superior graphics, and better presentation. Take care.
I had Athens 2004 back then. Never managed to win one of those long swimming events. They were so exhausting! I was great at height jumping though. Never had a problem with the rhythm myself ^^u
Nice overview. I also enjoyed Summer Athletics (PS2) and now I'm playing Summer Challenge: Athletics Tournament (PS3). Athens is the game I played the most, loved it. Summer Athletics had cool controls. London 2012 might be the best, overall.
Loved Athens 2004 growing up but i am still scarred from the button mashing haha Also played Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010. Slight preference to Torino. Thats where i feel like it all came together for winter games
@@ProjectPlayGaming Thanks for letting me know. Athens was my all time favorite on PS2 so I was debating which one to get so I might try the London one then. I am concerned though that it seems they've changed the tradition button bashing elements for the sprint games when the original system was really the usp of those games. Plus there didn't seem to be a lot of gymnastics from further exploration online. I'll give it a go anyway. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly
Sydney 2000 on the PS1 (also released on Dreamcast) was my first Olympics game. Athens 2004 was probably the best, with London 2012 in second. I haven’t played any of the Winter games, so would love to play them all at some point 👍🏻
Imagine a EA Sports made Olympic Videogame. It would be very interesting, since they make most of the most famous sports games, despite we all knowing that all of it are filled with microtransactions. In the end, I wish we could have an expanded and modernized version of the London 2012 game for this year.
Personally: Beijing > Vancouver > Athens > Torino > London > Tokyo. Tokyo is too arcady for me. I want it to feel like the Olympic Games. It didn't for me.
Understandable. I thought Tokyo was decent enough fun, but it is very arcady, definitely not one for someone looking for a more simulation style experience.
I thought I would hate the cartoony looking characters in 2020 but the customisation makes it all better. I just wished they added more games like gymnastics :/
I feel like Mario & Sonic (Well some of them at least) did something special with the Olympic IP that many other adaptations failed to pull off. Too bad that series is now dead thank to the devs idiotic decision to market on NFTs. And now we have no adaptation for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Would be nice to see something interesting done in the indie scene that isn't directly tied with the Olympics, but are basically compilations of Summer sports, followed by Winter sports and then whatever other collection of sports they feel appropriate.

For a 12 year old game it really nails simulating the look and feel of the Olympics as it was presented on television. Definitely something we should celebrate!
While I agree with assements on the games I feel like you got the winner wrong. While Tokyo 2020 is a really good game, the arcadey feel of it makes it not as good as London 2012 plus it doesn't have as many events.
Thanks for making this video! It's so sad that IOC has opted to make NFT videogames instead of this gems, I wish in LA 2028 we get a realistic videogame again, because the cartoon theme is getting a little boring in the last editions

I’d hope the haptics of modern controllers will make control schemes in future games (if there are any) more inventive, like the diving and gymnastics controls you showed in the vid.
Used to love these games but I guess they're stuck in a strange position of - gamers expect decent graphics and gameplay and these games essentially have a dozen sports in them. Some smaller than others, sure. The second part they're stuck between is ultimately it's very simple gameplay, which again is pretty dated. Just smashing buttons and timing had its place and now, seems boring to many. Summer Games on the Amiga was my first, the last one I remember buying new was Sydney 2000 on the PS1. But the Olympic Games this year I felt like revisiting them. Turns out Sega haven't renewed the rights so this year it looks like a pretty basic game. Previous years Sega went down a very arcade approach with their mascots such as Sonic. The last 'real' game looks to be London 2012. Which you can't buy legally anymore, or Bejing 2008 though that is on Steam, it's just not for sale. 2012 is on the web archive and works though, so I gave it a shot and it's pretty poor by previous standards. It feels a bit lifeless, but, it is the game you'd expect, no weird arcade boosts etc. I also think the basic mechanics of the game lend itself to tablets and phones, so that's probably taken the market from them too. Certainly fun to look back on though as sometimes they got it right.
Nothing will beat Athens 2004 ! 👑
20 years old now! A shame they don’t really make Olympic video games in that style anymore.
LONDON 2012
I just purchased it again recently. It’s so good. Great memories of playing it between classes at my high school.

Great video, this brought back some old memories of finger trauma from playing Athens 2004 with the family.
