That's so stupid, it's like they're reminding people "hey, Uncle Dave we named our finisher with your surname, so please always support and defend us, and we'll promise to give you inside scoo.."

    • @Chaz4543
      @Chaz4543 ปีที่แล้ว +46

He had no influence in the 80s and 90s and up until the Monday Night Wars. He only got huge influence after WWE beat WCW and then the internet exploded and podcasts, Twitter, TH-cam became a thing.

@@Chaz4543 yes i know, that's my point. This current generation of wrestlers were raised on Dave Meltzer, and basically have catered their style to what he likes, hoping to get "5 stars" or whatever unlike the wrestlers of the 80's and the 90's. People in the wrestling business have always fed Meltzer bs stories, which Meltzer reports as facts.
Then, Meltzer gives high star ratings to the people feeding him the "scoops" , and buries the people those people don't like.
If you want to know who was giving Meltzer the "inside information" at any point over the last 40 years, just look at who Meltzer was putting over, and getting the High Star Ratings.

Why are people so surprised though? Dave was back in the day in contact with Vince, WWE, etc. Way back when, he truly was an insider with inside information. Then he ended on the outskirts, so now he got a chance to get back on the inside because a tool like Tony Khan cares what some online writer writes about his product. So he took advantage of it.

    1. WWE's rating are his baseline, a WWE 5 star match is an all time classic (Shawn v Razor, Bret v Owen, Bret v Austin, Shawn v Taker H.i.a.C, Punk v Cena, Seth v Cody, Gunther v Sheamus)
    2. New Japan matches get a +2 to 2.5 star rating, AEW/RoH/NXT and other small promotions get a +1.5 to 2 star rating
    3. Consistency between individual ratings is nonexistent, and he considers the 2000's the worst era for ratings despite having the best crop of technical wrestlers
    4. Kurt Angle, Mr. Perfect, Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Triple H, Brock Lesnar, and Randy Orton combined have 25 fewer five star matches than Will Ospreay.
    5. Bryan Danielson had zero 5 star matches in his first 22ish years wrestling, then he joined AEW, now he has five in about a year and a half...

Did anyone see the video from that huge mark Chris Van Vilet where it says in the headline that "Will Osprey has had 25 5 star matches?" Meanwhile this guy has never drawn a dime in the US where nobody pays to see him and unless youre a huge mark or geek you dont even know who he is.

@@pleaseshutup7053 WWE is Sport Entertainment, bro. They dont care about your 25 5 star matches in a foreign country. Means nothing if they are trying to negotiate with you. If you have 25 5 star matches and you arent even AEW's top guy/talent then what does it really mean ?

You know, wrestling in the 80's to get over you hurt your opponent (kayfabe) These days, the more you hurt yourself the more you get over.

I think my favorite match ever was John Cena vs Rob Van Dam from the ECW PPV for world heavyweight championship. It was the match where the crowd was extremely (yeah I said it) behind RVD. I think they threw John's shirt back into the ring 10 times. I think all around that was an absolute classic. I wonder how many stars that got? Dave doesn't want to hurt any feelings. He's like Tony.

Dave Meltzer's favorite wrestler used to be Mitsuharu Misawa. He liked Misawa so much that he continued to rate his matches high even though doing so wouldn't help Meltzer's standing with Mokoto Baba, defacto owner of Meltzer's favorite wrestling promotion. Meltzer's one criticism of Misawa is that he worked too hard and damaged his body too much, more so when doing so lead to Misawa's death.
His next favorite wrestler was Kazuchika Okada. Dave's one criticism of Okada was, once again, that Okada didn't protect his head enough.
Meltzer hated the Hell In The Cell fall Mic Foley took. He hated the ROH ladder wars. He hated seeing Elix Skipper walk on top of the six sides of steel. What the hell has made him fall in love with Kenny Omega, who doesn't resemble Misawa, Okada, Randy Orton, Edge, The Great Muta or even Manami Toyoda, CM Punk and Davey Richards in the ring? He is so unlike all of Meltzer previous favorites! And what has made Dave love garbage wrestling? He used to hate that stuff.

The observation on matches being overly long is on-point. I remember watching Brett Hart vs. Shawn Michaels in their 60-minute ironman match at Wrestlemania XII and though it wasn't their best work separately or together, it kept my attention for the entire hour - with many of the highest rated ones today, I feel more like skipping or fast-forwarding because there's just something missing. Maybe it's because they're doing so much that there's no breathers, I don't know.
