Wrestling today is in a very different place than it was in the late 90's early 2000's.
Dude I went to full gear, and had a hell of a good time. That being said the only matches that hit 4 stars were Punk/Kingston match and Allin/MJF. The Miro/Danielson match was also very good.

The worst match in the show got 3 and a half stars. Meanwhile Rock vs Hogan at WM18 got only three stars. What an absolute fucking joke.

Exactly. If you ask me, his Summerslam match with Orton is his best. But that’s just me. Honestly though, the fact Luchasauras has a 5 star match but HBK and Angle don’t show that is Meltzer is just straight goofy.

What you’re watching is Dave’s favorite brand of modern professional wrestling. Of course Dave is going to almost always speak highly of it, because it has all the aspects that Dave currently enjoys. The story-telling isn’t laid out traditionally like Cornette prefers, it’s longterm & erratic, with the characters colliding, going away from each other for weeks/months, then re-colliding again (Hangman/Omega).

Actually, Eddie does have a 5 star match in 1994. However, Eddie never got a 5 star match from Uncle Dave in WWE, even though his match against Brock Lesnar should have gotten at least 5 stars.

Meltzer’s “Elite” bias could not be more obvious than ranking the 6-man falls count anywhere match above Darby/MJF from the same ppv.
All because one of the Bucks promised that they would ‘carry’ Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus to their first 5-star match.
So Dave obviously had to oblige.

I think Dave was too kind for most of these matches.
personally, I thought the Britt/Conti match was way better than the Inner Circle/America's Top Team match. It was also better than the Lucha Bros/FTR match (but that one had an injury in it).
I liked the ending to the Jurassic/Christian vs. Super Klick match (as Jungle Boy needs some character development) but I stopped caring about this feud a long time ago.
I loved the main event but you could tell Kenny was not at 100%, no where even close to it.
MJF/Darby was THE best match. Period. End of story.

Exactly. Dave is a complete doofus when it comes to fairly ratings wrestling matches these days. The fact that Bryan Danielson got his only 5 star match against Kenny Omega ( it was an amazing match, great on both guys parts) shows Dave’s extreme bias and that’s where people undoubtedly have a problem with him.

Famous 4.25 star match, Triple H vs Rock at Summerslam 98. Elevated both of them towards being main eventers and one of my favourite matches in my first year as a fan. As good as 2 random tag matches. I think Dave is trolling at this point.
Dave's credibility is just shot. Like, at this point, it is beyond absurd. To hear Dave speak, every week is better than the last, which says something, because apparently each previous week was the best thing to happen to wrestling since Strangler Lewis. I don't think even people who like the program, aside from the absolute diehard marks like Dave himself, think that of the show. Say what you will about Jim if you're of the mind that he's too harsh and out to hate the show, but he will praise it when it's objectively good. I feel like on the opposite side, you'd have to threaten to cut Dave's nuts off to get an actual critique of the program out of him. I still respect him as a historian cause he knows his shit there, but his view on wrestling is so skewed and twisted now, his ratings are worthless to anyone capable of critical thought. He's turned a 4 star match into a participation award at AEW.
He didn’t give Taker vs HBK at manias 25 and 26 5 stars. Didn’t give Cena and Owens any 5 star matches. Didn’t give the TLC matches 5 stars those are just ones off the top of my head I’ve only been watching wrestling since 96 so know I’m missing some he didn’t give 5 stars. Yet a throw away 6 man tag gets it just because his buddies are in it.
Meltzer is just catering to the audience that is left watching wrestling, or what is being sold as wrestling today. I can't really fault him for that. You can't get people to sub to your service when you are shitting on everything they like.
At the same time, I don't think that you can compare his current rating with ratings from 30+ years ago, since the product is just different. It is confusing because it is still the same star rating and the product is still called wrestling, but to me they are two different things. I can't watch most of todays "wrestling" and I hated Darby vs. MJF.

You hit the nail absolutely on the head! Most YB fans are in their late 20s to early 40s. All these people grew up during the attitude Era. I'm 19 years old, I grew up watching the PG Era stuff and Hogan Era TNA and Okada in NJPW. Guess what, I agree. Every fan who is the same age as I am dislikes their style of wrestling. Dave is irrelevant in my generation of fans, we find it bullshit that the Bucks have matches rated higher than Michaels vs Taker and Punk vs Cena and Bryan vs Orton vs Batista

Hell, I'm 29 and I'm not even a fan of the Young Bucks.
The young bucks are cool and no doubt a great tag team but not really my favorite
If memory serves, from 1997 (HBK vs Undertaker Hell in a Cell) through to 2004 (CM Punk vs Samoa Joe 2, ROH title 60 minute draw), Dave did not give a single 5* rating to a match in North America. Hell for the whole 2000-10 decade, he only gave out seven 5* ratings. That set a standard. I knew matches he rated 4*+ were awesome. Hell, I went to find shows with one 3.5* match on them because I figured it was worth it. Any shows with a couple of 3* and maybe a 4* were gems. Shows with two matches in the 4*+ range were must-have classics. Full Gear 2021 was an outstanding show, but Meltzer has screwed with his own metrics so much that credibility is beyond compromised. By his 2000's standard, we'd be talking a sprinkling of 3-3.5* matches, a 3.75*, a 4.25* and maybe a 4.5*. Which we all would have considered 'Show Of The Year'.
Darby vs MJF would be 3.5 if we’re using real scales here, everything else would fall behind it accordingly. The best PPV AEW has put on but come on. You’d think this was the greatest wrestling event based on this idiot

These AEW gymnasts should be looking for Corny's approval. Corny should start doing a star rating. He is much harder to impress and judges based on the WRESTLING not the gymnastics and weapons.

i think meltzer's ratings mostly go for the number of spots he sees per second rather than what these matches are trying to accomplish. more than half of these matches for me were just unmemorable, boring spotfests that in a few years time won't mean jack. for me i prefer good drama and story telling these days in a match and the only one that really managed to accomplish that was punk vs kingston because their match was unique and had a real big fight feeling because people cared about the people involved. i did like MJF vs Darby and Miro vs Bryan because those two also stood out for different reasons. but the only one that probably deserved anything 4* was MJF vs Darby.
as for the rest of meltzer's ratings especially his top two slots, it's pretty ridiculous. i just feel he must get some sort of kickback for having outrageously high numbers.
Tbf Omega vs Hangman had a lot of storytelling. Not 5 and a half stars but it was by no means bad

Match ratings will always be subjective, but Dave as a "journalist" has never been able to remove his overt bias.
The only match on that card that deserves as much as 4 out of 5 stars is MJF v Darby. It's the only match that will stand some test of time.
I tend to like spotfests myself. They take a lot of coordination and endurance to pull off. They kind of remind me of Lucha Libre matches.

Those matches did not deserve those high ratings. This Full Gear wasn't even AEW's best show. The main event was predictable, everyone knew Page was winning and the match did not last Omega's 'usual hour' which Meltzer loves so much. The crowd wasn't as hype as they usual are in previous shows. This just Meltzer being Meltzer. AEW can do no wrong in his eyes.
Omega's body is broken. We are lucky he could even stick around until now to finish the run.

Yeah the last ppv from them was way better than this one for paying off storylines, surprises, and pacing.

He has pretty fair criticisms of the WWE... But when it comes to Aew and you see some of the same inconsistencies in their booking and then their "storytelling" ....those go overlooked and ignored..l Like he always complains about distractions in the WWE but AEW has their share of distractions during matches. ... especially with the "elite"

The Bucks match was not 5 star, even for a Bucks match. For a Bucks style match their Lucha Bros match in the cage was as good as you're going to get. The Jurassic v Bucks match was 3 star range, early to mid 3, Kenny v Hangman was 4 stars at most, and Darby v MJF could actually be a 5 star. I think it was a masterpiece. Sigh.

The Minneapolis street fight getting 4 stars is laughable Jericho should get 5 stars for keeping that match going. He was orchestrating the match on the fly because half the people didn't have a clue what they were doing

I stopped caring about these silly match star ratings as soon as Meltzer broke his own scale to give 6-stars on a 5-star scale. That, to me, made what was once a respected wrestling writer look like such a _mark_ it was unbelievable. And I think it turned a lot of former supporters against him. These days any credibility with these star ratings is pretty much gone and the confirmation of AEW bias is rather undeniable.
Except that NXT has consistently received higher ratings than AEW...

I’ve accepted that Dave will always have a bias for Kenny and The Bucks but, the fact that the Jericho match was rated that high is messed up. That was the type of match he’d pan in WWE but, here it’s considered well above average?
Dave has 3 different star ratings systems. He has one for Japanese wrestling, one for his friends, and one for everything else. And he's wildly inconsistent with all of them. People need to remember that he's just an obsessive fan with a blog. That's all he's ever been.

Here's a good one: the acclaimed triple threat tag-team ladder match between the Hardys, Dudleys and Edge and Christian at Wrestlemania 2000 (the one that was so good it led to the invention of the TLC matches), was apparently *worse than Cody and Pac vs Black and Andrade*

Mjf and Darby was the best match in this PPV followed by punk and kingston! The PPV actually would have been much better without having the inner circle match and the supercliq match tbh! Are we even sure that Dave is an aew shill, to me it mostly seems like he's "the elite" shill. Now omega page I actually liked a lot but FFS 5.5 stars when it wasnt the best match of this PPV

It was overall an enjoyable show with a couple of excellent matches (Darby vs MJF, Punk vs Kingston, Hangman vs Omega), but these ratings from Melzer are a joke.
The cody match getting over 2 stars should be laughed out the building . That was a free tv match quality
