    Srsly the Android messaging problem is just a US thing. Literally everyone in my country uses WhatsApp for chatting whether he’s got an iPhone or Android. I also don’t get how iMessage became the standard service for messaging, WhatsApp existed probably 2 years before iMessage was introduced.. how did you Americans communicate pre-iMessage? Just wondering.

    • @Det_Fuse
      @Det_Fuse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Aliticx it's the tyranny of the default, man. iMessage is the default on iPhones and most "normal" people would never think to download a different app. I dunno what iPhone people did before iMessage. I've always been an Android guy. Probably just used SMS.

    • @JasonFerguson17t

      Before iMessage Apple users used SMS. Look at old screen shots of iPhone OS the icon said "SMS" on it...

      Unlimited SMS/MMS, phone calls, Skype, email, tons of different chat apps...
      I hope you're being sarcastic and are not really so behind as to think that WhatsApp and iMessage are the only forms of direct communication. If so, I really feel sorry for you. The problem here isn't figuring out which method to use, it's narrowing down the massive number of options so you don't have ten apps killing your battery for simple communication.

    • @kleinstarnull
      @kleinstarnull 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Before iMessage, (practically) everyone already had unlimited SMS/MMS. Outside of some businesses that communicate regularly with people outside the US, WhatsApp is practically unseen here, at least from my perspective.

      People in my country uses Line, FB message, WeChat, Telegram, all sort of that things they like.

      We can enable rcs on messages plus it is a bit buggy coz it is not available in all countries. Sometimes the chat feature gets disabled itself ... Also it is not auto enabled after the update plus only a small no. of phones has google messages as their default messaging app. This wont work as long as there are custom ui for every smartphone manufacturer where they have their own messaging app.

      Allo was great, the app is simple to use, the assistant integration was fun, but my friends using it jumped to telegram, guess what, everyone jumped too. They should have given Allo as a default instal when you get Nougat, and bake sms into it, and merge whatever google apps that needs merging, I'm getting so confused with google, it has a google now app and then there is assistant, and the used to be now gets neglected, now on tap, not sure if it's still useful, i heard inbox will be abandoned soon and mail will get refreshed instead.

    • @archonjk1196
      @archonjk1196 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@macrumpton It's not like RCS's privacy is worse than SMS. The "upside" for Apple is that their customer's can more easily communicate with their Android counterparts, and maybe with RCS's improved group chat system, android users wouldn't be left out of group chats as often due to them making the group chats green.

      As much as I'd like to avoid Facebook grabbing my Whatsapp usage metrics, contacts and God knows what else, at least Whatsapp's messages are encrypted end-to-end, once those messages leave your phone is pretty much impossible to decode them unless you somehow got the private encryption key that your friend's phone is using. Whereas this new "standard" of Google won't support encryption because it's based on the old SMS.

      Eric V no allo isn't sms. He means getting sms as a fallback for those who don't use allo. That way you can have just one messaging app instead of two separate ones. Kinda like what Hangouts had before it stopped being supported.

    • @BergerMeister
      @BergerMeister 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Eric V the only feature Allo is missing is the ability to send text messages to people that don't have Allo, if you give Allo sms you solve that issue and you have a better version of iMessage. Google doesn't need to reinvent the wheel to fix it's messaging problem, just go all in on a really good messaging app they already have. This is the same thing they did with Google pay, first it was Google wallet then they tried to "fix" it and made Android pay now they are "fixing" it again with Google pay. All while Google wallet worked and was better than subsequent versions.

Honestly they should have doubled down on hangouts, called it something else with "Google" in the name and upgraded it to have more modern features that people expect from chat apps of today (Allo for example has a good number of those features and great UI but it failed simply because it never offered anyone .a reason to install it).

      I think the issue is basically that they already tried that with Hangouts and it ...totally didn't work. So no point in trying it again with Allo unless they're willing to go all out and kill the plain SMS app AND go full iMessage and auto-detect. Which, you know, would have been a huge problem for carriers. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I do think that Google figured it had to do all or nothing. -- Dieter

    • @joeynumbers33
      @joeynumbers33 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Verge the issue is as you say, Google's desire not to piss off it's manufacturing and carrier partners. But Allo itself is a superior app to Hangouts. They should have just defaulted it and let Samsung and Verizon cry a river.

      The Verge Why should Google be ultra sensitive about what Carriers think? Don't the Carriers need the Google phones more so than Google needs them? I firmly believe Google's unwillingness to develop a universal secure messaging platform has more to do with its data collection agenda than anything else.

    • @nanobreaker
      @nanobreaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But that's it though. Google really does need carrier's support. Why? Because carriers can just as easily start using other search engine services or start integrating amazon apps, etc.
      Unfortunately the business model Google has prevents them at the end of the day from doing things the "Apple" way.

Please please please get translation subtitles for other languages (especially Spanish) because there are a ton of other regions that are deeply used to alternatives like WhatsApp. My in-laws in Argentina all use Facebook and WhatsApp exclusively, which is by far the norm there. Hi, Verizon Wireless customer here.
      I can just say that my family uses about 3,000+ SMS messages per month, according to our plan. We (father, son, mother) All use texting almost solely. Both my wife and I conduct business, where it's easier to give out a seven-digit number that people can use to contact you (What's the easy way to exchange WhatsApp information in a fast-paced business environment?) And if a potential customer doesn't have WhatsApp, you're screwed. Everybody has a phone, though. Landline, flip phone, Smartphone, whatever. They all have a telephone in some way.
      Besides that, Verizon has made huge strides in improving texting as of recently, allowing FaceTime-like video calling to other Verizon and Sprint customers, that counts against your *call minutes* and not your *cellular data* (a common gripe with FaceTime). As for HD images, I've been sending the Ultra HD 4k HDR images I take on my GS9+ to my wife, and she doesn't have a problem. I even checked, the resolutions remained the same. As for the 160 char limit, I've never encountered this, as smarter technology allows those messages to be sent with identifiers that automatically piece it back into one message (on Verizon's end) to be delivered to the recipient seamlessly.
      However, I do completely agree that messaging on Android needs a *massive* overhaul, and RCS sounds like a very solid method of doing that. Encryption is a must, though. Very annoying, bordering on affecting usability. But other than that small issue, I think this RCS project is geared perfectly towards some cool new future.
      This is just my *opinion*, and I only have experience with *VERIZON*. I do not know the situation with any other carriers.

    • @AlejandroLZuvic
      @AlejandroLZuvic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Steets apart from the business environment, where you can totally keep using SMS (I use email but whatever), the rest are things embedded into Whatsapp but Whatsapp gives you a richer more cohesive experience.
      The 160 char limit is something many users suffer depending on the device, carrier and configuration of their phones. Having videocalls is great and all but like you said, it's not part of the SMS but a different app and a different service altogether provided by your carrier (I'm sure not all carriers have the same deal) so it really doesn't answer my question about why keep using SMS, sending HD videos isn't part of the SMS/MMS specification so if you can send HD videos to your wife is because some other deal and some other app is running in place. If it works for you, great! But still not a reason on why SO MANY Americans and not only you still use SMS.
      Again, I'm not telling how you should use your phone, as long as it works for you that's great. I'm only trying to understand the actual reasons of the SMS hegemony in the US when there are more modern, better alternatives.

    • @AlejandroLZuvic
      @AlejandroLZuvic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alex Marko yes, I totally understand it. My father or my aunt don't give an f about cat videos, but we're in a TH-cam video by The Verge and apparently they also use SMS. So even advanced users use SMS in the USA, at least that's the impression.

Even if you could have them together, you're probably going to want them seperate. Which is how I feel. The Jio chat/sms app is a full-blown implementation of RCS, though much of of it's users still think that it's just anothrer wechat like app. The problem is no other carriers support rcs in india yet, so the benefits are limited if you are to send an RCS message across different networks. I have 3 carriers in my country, I asked around support of each one of them when will RCS be available on their network, and only one of them's been supporting it apparently since 2017. (Telenor), and from the other two one doesn't know exactly when will it be implemented, and the other one haven't even heard what's RCS.

    Honestly they should just make an imessage clone, and put it in the play store with rcs support. No need to fight the carriers as they said it doesn't need to be the stock app I just don't get it

    Hypothetically, if we were to send an rcs message to someone who may or may not have that feature, how will we get notified that that message will be sent as an rcs or an SMS message? I ask because I believe that this solution has the potential to confusion in phone plans that have a limit of SMS messages that can be sent.

      The Cake Glutton Because we like to have all of our conversations synced to one application across all of our devices. Like how iMessage is pushed to my Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, and Mac through iCloud seamlessly and is fully encrypted without using SMS. Using multiple applications to simply text different people is so fragmented and inefficient that I refuse to do that.

    • @unleashthedog
      @unleashthedog 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Andrew Compton well wanting to have a one-app setup and then use iMessage is an oxymoron. It’s proprietary and not available on all platforms so you throw your basic requirement out of the window.

    • @VectorGaming4080
      @VectorGaming4080 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Cake Glutton It’s not an oxymoron for me; all of my friends and family use iMessage or SMS, so I can text everyone through iMessage and can continue all of my conversation on all of my devices.

      Andrew Compton oh yeah and how can you know you’ll want to be locked in the ecosystem for the rest of time? Or any of your friends or family. What about work, Android is over 75%, don’t tell me you haven’t messaged an Android user ever.

  • @Calikid331

    I bet Google's beginning to regret making Android open source. Apple has control over their entire OS from top to bottom, meaning whatever iPhone you have, you are getting the best iOS experience the way Apple intended.
    That's why iPhone users don't even have to think twice about what messaging app to use, it's already built in as iMessage and every other messaging app is obsolete because iMessage is 100x better.
    Also, this seems to be a US problem. I have almost never seen someone use WhatsApp in America.

      Every OEM and carrier apply different SMS/MMS limits.
      Nevertheless, if you're communicating with another Samsung device or are on the same network, such as T-Mobile, as the person receiving your messages, you both can already enjoy RCS.
      However, if you're both on different devices and or different carriers, you will experience carrier limitations.

  • @jakevan1969

    The advantage of Hangouts is that the message will show up on multiple devices including your Chromebook. This is a huge advantage over something like a low or Duo as they are only able to be used on a single device. IMessage can also be used on multiple devices and is encrypted. What would be nice is if Google were able to improve on Hangouts and integrate that technology into an SMS app or leave it as a standalone app. I hate the idea of having my mobile die and having no other way to chat. At least with multiple devices you can use your tablet, laptop or a second phone if needed.

      techmage89 th-cam.com/video/YXi2_jgKid4/w-d-xo.html Either you need a Mac computer or I found another way to do it. If you have a Windows PC download the software VM workstation pro. get a DMG copy of macOS from the Internet. Open up VM workstation pro and choose the file you download from the Internet as their main iso file. This will install macOS on a virtual machine on your windows PC. once you open up macOS as a virtual machine you will be able to do this iMessage hack. Yeah it’s a little involved but it’s the best and only way I’ve found to do it for somebody that doesn’t own any Apple products whatsoever.
