    All this fuss about 'default' messaging apps is so fascinating to me as an Indian since literally no one cares about any of this here at all. Everyone uses cross-platform apps, particularly WhatsApp (and Telegram). And that's also true for literally all of Europe, Latin America, Africa, South & West Asia and even many parts of East Asia (others use LINE/WeChat).
    Its such an American "problem".

    I think in the past, the hesitation for Google might have been the need to be sensitive to RCS user's data plan, since there could be a lot more data being sent when using RCS. Now that everyone knows how to deal with unlimited data plans, even the cheaper ones, turning RCS on by default is safer for Google. Less of a chance of user backlash for excessive data use.

    In the Philippines, we don't have this kind of problem. Most of the people use FB Messenger. Some uses a combination of Viber, Telegram, Whatsapp, Signal, IG messages. But less so of the default messaging, even on iPhone. I think it's too little too late, here in Europe even if it would have been everything ready as it is now back in 2013 the war would still have been lost against whatsapp. The stock messaging app is tucked away in a folder, and gets opened just because you receive a message from your old carrier that tries to get you back with a better offer. And honestly I like "internet" messages to be separated from SMS, I don't want to spend 1€ on an MMS because I didn't have wifi or something stupid like that, with a separated app there is no possibility of error.

    • @karellen00
      @karellen00 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@-ThatGuy- I don't think it's a matter of tech illiterature, I think the 50-60 yers old people we have here (Italy) that can barely turn on the phone, they all know and use whatsapp. It's just a matter of first come first served, here messaging has always been expensive (10-15 cent each) and almost with no contracts with "all included", so when an app allowed free SMS everyone jumped in. In the USA probably there was already some form of free messages (included on the contract), so a lot of people didn't install an app to have messages for free. We know this stuff only works when pretty much everyone have that platform, so in the USA it was the stock SMS, that later Apple has been able to enhance with the rest of the stuff (pictures, videos, groups, etc), while still being compatible with android to have 100% reachability.
      Honestly I'd prefer anything to whatsapp/Facebook, even SMS, but it's not possible here (most contracts removed SMS, so you pay a lot for them). I hope that something will move with EU regulations that will require interoperability between messaging apps.

    My phone opted to RCS, but I get a lot of "message not delivered" issues, even when talking to my sweetie, who's on the same carrier and plan and on Android, so I switch back to SMS. I don't know why RCS just breaks so often, but if they don't fix it fast, people are going to opt out in droves.

    The most annoying part of Google's rollout is that RCS is still not available for Google Voice. Either make Google Voice RCS compatible or let me receive/send messages via my GV number in Google messages. Just the way using the phone app asks me which number do I want to call from.

    I wonder what happens the new EU rule comes into play next year. There will be mandatory interconnectivity of APIs for big messages platforms. But I am not sure if that means that Google Messages just add some Apple iMessage functionality and call it a day or if it means more "multiband" app such as Beeper will come and the actual platform will not matter anymore (not that Beeper is quite there yet).

      Don't take my word for it.but allegedly, apple is threatening to leave the EU over this(this is a 100% fact)Apple makes this sound like a singular issue and it threatens to expose it users, but what i think Apple is concerned about in America, that android devices could become more competitive with iPhones If RCS could work with imessage flawlessly. If other lawmakers and such in other countries rally behind this as anti-competitive and make apple ,manufacturers and carriers come up with a cross platform solution....apple won't have choice but to.

    On the topic of group messages and RCS, I suspect that the RCS standard is just going to be downgrading to MMS when you have a user in the group that does not support RCS and this is because RCS is not a super centralized protocol like iMessage so you don't have the ability for a central server to discriminate between the users. Google might still find a way to do it. I just expect that it's going to downgrade to MMS instead because that's the easy way to do it and it's very clear what's happening.
    I'm also not surprised it took Google so long to get full group end to end encryption because as somebody who has worked on developing a chat messaging app and to end encryption is very annoying key sharing when there is more than one user becomes a massive headache and I would love to see how Google handled that problem if they want to release like a white paper on it because depending on how they did it, it could become a new standard on its own

    I noticed RCS was turned on when I was trying to sent a SMS message. I still use SMS messaging in case there is no wifi and I don't want or cannot use mobile data transfer. It's mostly used for emergency purposes. So here I found out what RCS means: It blocked messaging. It was installed and enabled unsolicited. I would regard this switch over of communication towards a company owned platform as hijacking, and thus a criminal activity by Google. After some internet search, the way to restore SMS was revealed. Many people have cellphones at this moment that don't support SMS anymore while the users are not aware, creating a communication and safety hazard.

    This is great for Australians as RCS is over the internet, which is much more reliable than the old mobile towers and copper lines, for someone like me living in the outer brisbane suburbs up in a mountain range, I can SMS and call anyone I want from my property with a WiFi connection. Prior to this service I had to walk up the driveway ( a 30 degree slope for 250m) to take a call or make a call, lol.

And notification about not delivering of RCS message will appear sometimes few hours later, and you have to switch it for SMS manually.
