  • This is a short seminar-style lesson on how to change between backspin, sidespin and topspin on the pendulum serve - all while maintaining a service action which is the same disguising motion.

    interesting take on the technique with the tightening at different points depending on what spin one wants. appreciate it

      Thanks matt, interesting tutorial. I'm going to try this out but I would imagine it's tricky as you would require split second timing on the tightening the grip.

    Really informative ,appreciate your time and effort.
    I am noticing a lot of players changing their grip between forehand and backhand (loops and drives)making the B/H much more lethal,but have not found any good videos
    explaining this.A tutorial on this would be great.

      Interesting, I'll certainly make a note of that and see if it's something I can try and explain. I tend to try and keep my grip balanced between both strokes so it's not something I personally do or teach.

    I've often wondered how to do anything but sidespin on the pendulum serve, this video explains it really well, how didn't I think of it, so obvious really!!
    Having said that, i've given it try, and I'm finding it very difficult to contact the ball earlier or later than I usually do. Maybe because I've only been doing the pendulum serve for a short while, but my brain seems to refuse to let me contact the ball at a different point in the swing than it usually does. I have a table in my garage, so i'll keep practicing this.
    Great video though, thanks Matt.

    Great explanation! It would also super useful if you could make some video about reading and receiving these variations - that's what I'm having problems with, since the pendulum motion is the same, how to read the spin?

      I always play on 3000SC it's a great table. During the lockdown I was fortunate that some of the old tables from our, now Joola, club were in the garage so I wasn't able to use a joola table. Of course if I had the choice I would 😁

    Thanks for sharing this excellent tutorial. Although I can perform all of the various spins on the serve, I have never mastered the pendulum serve. Given your instruction, I just may be able to now. One comment: I am left handed and find it confusing to serve to another left hander. Its all backwards and I am not sure what to expect in return and it screws up my footwork and my 3rd shot attack. Do you have any suggests about how you deal with this issue?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Roland! I certainly hope this helps. Against other left handers it's all about thinking of how your serve placement and spin direction combine and visualizing what kind of response to expect. Against other lefties I have always had great success serving short reverse to the forehand, give it a try - it's a game changer!

      @@MHTableTennis hi..great video! Is it true that racket should be tilted at about 45 degrees as the pendulum shape is formed to get the best disguise?

  • @Martydogable
    @Martydogable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question, the backspin with side spin, am I aiming to drive the ball into the table as I find the spin looks like your side spin only serve?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little yes, with the pendulum this is common to feel downward force into the ball contact

  • @josepinchero
    @josepinchero 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    i've heard the action at contact with the ball to be like "snapping a towel". this coach described the serving arm motion being pretty small (he said no more than 6" back and then a "snap of the towel" wrist snap forward, timing the peak acceleration of the snap at ball contact. does this sound right? here you describe the action of the timing of when you contact the ball to the bat as subtle..i can see that. thanks!

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Snapping a towel sounds a bit aggressive and tight 😂 but in terms of looseness leading up to contact and a tightening like cracking a whip I suppose there’s some logic to it. All depends on context I guess

  • @huyhuyt
    @huyhuyt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for video, still not getting at part you said about contact point for backspin, topspin and sidespin. mean middle , bottom and top on racket?

    • @matthetherington7621
      @matthetherington7621 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more about where in the pendulum motion you contact the ball, so at the bottom of the motion the curve changes direction 3 ways - downward, sideways and up in a very short space. So you can contact on the way down, sideways or up to create 3 different spin types.

    • @benjaminpride5259
      @benjaminpride5259 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthetherington7621 Thanks. I have been using this technique, 3 parts of pendulum motion, but I cant get topspin after brushing up without changing racket degree. I still get backspin. Therefore, I made conclusion which is I should change racket degree to close racket.

    Do you alter the ball toss or the timing of the swing? It seems like if you want to catch the ball earlier or later in the swing arc you’re going to have start the swing a bit earlier or later accordingly? Cheers.

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its pretty marginal the contact timing is almost the same it’s all really close to that low point of the stroke curve

      I have other videos on backspin and backspin ghost serves

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With pendulum and contacting side of ball more it's less likely to get backspin heavy to come backwards, you need to contact the bottom of the ball for that which means it's more difficult to change spin without changing motion

    • @RobertoCostas
      @RobertoCostas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the backspin pendulum serves there is a mixture of backspin and sidespin. No pure backspin. The purpose of this kind of serves is that the ball bounces downwards when touching the opponent's racket, and it's achieved.

    I tried out your video and I’m having problems. When I attempt a topspin pendulum serve by trying to hit the ball on the upward part of my stroke, I get extra backspin! I think it’s because I’m hitting up the front of the ball. All feedback and advice appreciated. Here’s my video: th-cam.com/video/Itv57VjA6M0/w-d-xo.html

      Your pendulum action is too short, so the downward part makes up the majority of the action. Try relaxing your shoulder and keeping your elbow down a bit more, loosen up the pendulum motion and keep the racket head facing down and parallel to your body as much as possible. If you look at your slow motion videos you can see that the contact timing is almost identical between your backspin and topspin attempts.
