  • Today's video tutorial covers some simple tips for creating deception in your service action. The main focus is on using the bottom axis of the ball to generate spin so that the contact is subtle enough to change without giving away too much information.

    This is the BEST video series on serves i've seen anywhere. The details and breakdowns are well explained and perfect. Thank you so much for this series on serves.

      @@MHTableTenniscan you please add to this: deception WITH more spin. i'm starting to get the idea of deception as outlined here, but i have pretty weak spin on my serves. can you please offer a 1, 2, 3 on improving spin quality & qty? (and spin qty deception)
      there's gotta be a 1, 2, 3 to improve spin on serves....mine are so weak compared to others i play with and there must be an algorithm of specific things to try improving (e.g., forearm snap (not a big movement but more of a arm snap, or is it all in the wrist? or maybe i'm consistently hitting the ball too center on my blade?, or maybe the timing is off...just not sure.

    Thanks, very helpful! Do you have any recommendation on what serves to focus on when you are still fairly new to the sport? Should you stick to only 1 serve, and get better at the different variations of spin on it?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are a beginner I would start with a basic backspin serve and one sidespin or topspin pendulum. That way you have each spin covered in 2 serves.

    Last question pls- for a person with the injured wrist, is it ok I don't cock the wrist back before the contact but keep it neutra, focussing more on the tightening action? Sorry for all these questions. You are the best no BS , no snake oil instructor. I have been looking for this for years!

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's ok, so long as it is relaxed before the contact, you can use your elbow and conduit through the wrist and focus on thumb and fingers more. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

    initial position of the racket in preparation stance before the toss- the racket nose should point down?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No try and keep it level, otherwise if it's pointing down you have to move it more to change the spin, which gives away more information to your opponent.

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No the difference is fairly minor, same composite. I think there was just a difference in the ply thickness of each layer. Also the Aruna was discontinued, I switched to the Rossi Emotion and it has been superb, feels basically the same to me.

    I know that there is a player at your club who has appeared on this channel who uses penhold with short pimple rubber, do you think you could have her show us how best to perform serves with penhold grip? I switched to cpen recently so I have inverted on the backhand, Im wondering if twiddling the paddle to serve with the inverted would be better for my service? I have been practicing but penhold twiddling is extremely uncomfortable, Ive been using the assistance of my other hand to quickly switch back to my regular short pimple on the forehand.

      Hi Bryan, unfortunately I don’t live near that club anymore I moved over two years ago now

    • @MHTableTennis

      It really depends how spongy your short pips are as to whether you can produce good spin. She only really had two serves, one short backspin/no spin and one long fast

    Hi Matt
    Your videos are very good and easy to understand. However, when I try to execute any serves on the table I cannot get the timings and the contact right when I toss the ball. Often either I missed hit or unable to generate the spin. Even though I know what I should be doing but upon doing the toss somehow cannot contact the ball at the right height etc.
    Any advice on this ? Some people said use your knees and contact when you lower your centre of gravity, any tips ?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can try adjusting the position of your feet to make sure you get good core rotation into the ball contact. You should always have bodyweight low on the front leg on serve and rotate through the waist

      Another question Matt, there are tips for doing long serves and to wait for the ball to drop to your bat and then only you accelerate into the ball, how do you do this timely so that I can get a fast sliding side underspin long serves ?

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But how do you swing low and get a good contact at the bottom of the ball and get the ball to slide. I know you have to aim for the rim of the whiteline on the table. Is so difficult to do this whilst trying the slice the ball etc

    From 7:00, when you speak about "topspin", aren't you meaning "corkscrew spin"? If I'm not mistaken, the axis of the spin in your serves is parallel to the side lines of the table, such as in corkscrew spin as you show in 7:10. For backspin or topspin, the axis of rotation should be horizontal and paralel to the bottom lines of the table. For sidespin it's vertical.

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Corkscrew is not a spin type, it's a description of a ball rotation. Corkscrew just means a serve with sidespin that is on the 'Z axis' so a corkscrew serve can still be topspin it just has sidespin added.

    • @Zergosss
      @Zergosss ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MHTableTennis lol playing with terms; I'd say corkscrew is a spin, and every spin is a description of a ball rotation

    • @MHTableTennis
      @MHTableTennis  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zergosss corkscrew ‘spin’ doesn’t help people understand what is on the ball. If I tell someone a serve is corkscrew spin what does that mean to them really. People are free to use it if they want to but I don’t think it’s a useful term personally.

    • @matthetherington7621
      @matthetherington7621 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but I feel the term cork spin is outdated and really not commonly used in table tennis especially by coaches, maybe in Europe it is used more but worldwide not so much. People just refer to sidespin off different axis because of the ball movement

    you can do as much aftermotion as you want. if you´re not able to do a serve which uses your aftermotion as an actuall serve its pretty much useless. sadly not what i expected clicking on the video. but keep going with your tutorials most of them should be very helpful for a lot of players!
