  • A very basic area that a lot of players struggle with, executing a backspin serve which has good spin, is low over the net, and consistently short!

Thanks for thoroughly explaining the backspin serve. I was really not doing this right! You taught me ways to break it down! Thank you!

You gotta appreciate the basics, I feel a lot of people rush them and just lack a solid foundation. When the pressure comes on if you don't have that to fall back on then life gets tough! :)

Probably use more wrist to generate the spin or you can bring the contact more to the side instead of right in front of you

Great content. Although I would use this technique with caution if my opponent is a long pips player.

Well if I wanted them to return the ball float or topspin then it's good. Against long pips you should always choose a serve based on what kind of response you want from the opponent

I usually serve topspin against them, because I am not bad against backspin balls, but it depends on the opponent. If he is very good choping and generates a lot of backspin, maybe it's a better idea to serve nospin or with some backspin.

In another tutorial (unfortunately I didn't save the link) they say that it was advisable to stop the forearm and body movement just before touching the ball, because that would increase the speed of the bat and, thus, would generate more spin. I know many players do that but I don't see the logic in it, because the overall speed of the bat should be the sum of the speeds of your body, your wrist and your forearm. It's basic physics unless you are close to light-speed, which is not the case, at least for me. If you reduce the forearm and body speed to zero, I don't see the reason why the overall speed of the racket would increase. It should decrease instead. Any thoughts about that?
Thanks in advance for your answer and for your excellent videos.

I think usually anytime you stop in table tennis there is a micro period of deceleration which is undesirable in my opinion, your body can decide the optimal time to stop by itself as long as the motion is controlled

@@MHTableTennis Look at a whip. The handle moves at a certain speed and stops. This causes a fast whip action that is much faster than the handle speed. The forearm is the handle, the wrist is the whip.
