Useful tip: Google maps can get confused if you are on the Margit Island. It may tell you to swim :) Solution: just set the starting position from "my location" to the tram stop on the bridge.

Great video! We used all the public transportation options on our week-long stay in Budapest and we never needed a taxi. Your public transportation is amazing and we never had to wait long out in the cold on any stop. Ourselves, we bought two passes at the airport, the ones that are valid for 15 days, so we didn't have to validate all the time. We had our passports with us and never faced any issues (as the passes are valid for the specific passport ID that are issued for). Congratulations to BKK, they operate a well-functioning system.

We always just buy a 72 hour pass as we are usually only in Budapest for 3 full days. It's quite cheap and the convenience of not having to validate makes it worthwhile even though we tend to walk most of the time.

I usually get a three day ticket and have fared well with it. Also price is quite reasonable with 4150 HUF. At least you don't have the hassle of validating and buying all the time. You just may to keep it handy as there's ticket inspectors at stations checking before you go down or after you come down (as for the földalatti M1). Sometimes I just ride public transport for the sake of riding and to discover new places. I take one transport, get off somewhere and take the next ond from there and see where I end up. Good to experience it and to get to know the network better. BP is set up really well on Public transport, also cross connections are good and it is easy to get around. Hungarian engineering, well thought through with logic. As I watch these clips I get a big desire to go back soon for a holiday again. It's been four years and I miss BP big time. I love transportation in Hungary the best I ever seen I used it so much however, in my last visit there was a lot of work on the metro station that was in February and March 2020
Yeah there were several years when parts of M3 were under reconstruction, it was in a very bad shape before that. It was a blessing when they finished the whole line finally and we didnt need to factor changing to replacement buses all the time :)

Another good one 👍🏽 As someone who worked in public transit for years, I can say that this was on point. I personally don't like Google for any kind of transit planning, I find it way too unreliable (it randomly doesn't recognise stops/vehicles that are very much there, and vice versa) but I find BudapestGo and Budapesti Menetrend among the best transit apps in Europe.

I think it will be great if you could make a video on how to use the Volanbusz service to go to some remote attractions. Personally, I think their bus timetable it's a bit hard for a tourist to understand.

I'm not even a tourist and I always get confused when trying to take a Volán Busz anywhere.
BudapestGo is a must when you visit Budapest and don't speak Hungarian, so you can check everything twice 😅 transportation system is actually very nice, and M1 metro line is especially lovely!
As of March 1st, Pest county passes and country passes are also usable on BKV. People below the age of 14 can use both volán and BKV for free, the latter was introduced in 2022 or 2023 I don't quite remember.

Thank you so much for the Support! Tram 2 is indeed like taking a tour bus, I actually prefer taking it sometimes even if it may not be the most optimal way to get to my destination, but the trip is just so nice with it 😊
Sad to see the 7 day pass has gone (used it in 2020) and wow the 100 airport bus has gone up! Very good summary of the necessary information. My only additional tip is take the number 2 tram at least once, maybe up to Fővám Square (Fővám tér) and back. Beautiful scenery.
Indeed Tram 2 is like a Tourist Bus ride where a lot of the attraction can be seen for the price of 1 single ticket :) I especially like the part where it goes around the Parliament :) Regarding the 7 day pass, the 15 day pass essentially 800 HUF more than the 72 Hr pass, so I think thats a super value if you stay even just 5 days.
Matyás templom (Natthias church) from Országház (Parliament building) I'd say, with the M2 Metró right over to Széll Kálmán Tér and then you walk up, alternatively no. 2 tram to Jaszai Mári Tér and then the 6/8 Tram to Széll Kálmán Tér and then you walk up or take the 16 bus up; or you take the No. 2 Metró back the other direction to Deák Ferenc Tér and from there the no. 16 Bus, which stops up on Szent Háromság Tér outside of Matyas Templom.

I already had a mea-culpa moment on the Tram 6, totally forgot that still operates during the night even though I had my fare share of Night-riding that after some long concerts :D Regarding Arriva, I just didn't want to confuse visitors of the city... I also didn't want to dig into how Volánbusz or MÁV comes into picture and how some of the passes are valid for those, that would've been even more confusing for some :)

I have two questions:
We'll prefer 200E from Airport and we would like to buy group ticketpass (3 Persons). Can we use our ticket on that bus? Do we have to validate it only once or 3 times for each person?
We also notice that there are also 60 minutes or 90 minutes single tickets. Can we combine our trip with Tram, M ot bus within (for example) 90 minutes with that ticket?

Hey there! If you are refering to the 24 hour Group Travel Card which costs 5,000 HUF, that would be accepted on the regular 200E bus. I personally never used the pass, but in most cases for a pass you need to write the nr of an ID or Passport, and when you purchase you set the time of validity. From that point on it should be valid and no need to validate once on the bus separately :) I assume you may need to enter the IDs of all people who are part of the group. Usually Inspectors don't ask for the IDs, but it may happen that they want to check if the IDs assigned to passes are used by the same people.
Regarding the 30 min and 90 min passes, those can be used on any of the vehicles. What matters is that you must board the vehicles within the the given time period. So when you first Board a vehicle and you validate the ticket, from that point on you have 30 or 90 mins to board vehicles. So for example if you have a 30 min ticket, you can get on a bus, travel for 20 mins, then wait for a tram that you board at the 25th minute, you can then go all the way passed the 30 mins, but once you hop off you cannot jump on any other vehicle.

If you tend to use them next time you visit, please check if the prices have not gone up and tickets haven’t changed design or colour. It happened to me once, prices were still the same as my year old ticket (I checked beforehand) but the colour had changed and though I speak Hungarian fluently, I could not convince the inspector and had to pay the fine. I don’t bother with single tickets anymore, instead I mostly buy weekly or monthly passes whenever I’m in BP. Much more convenient and if you use the system regularly, it may even be cheaper than using single tickets … Jó utat kívánok!

Did you say I needed to scan/validate a pass? Because I thought a 15 day pass and 24 and 72 hour travel cards didn't need to be validated because the validity date was printed on them.

Hey there! The 30 min and 90 min tickets are valid for multiple "boardings" within the validity period. So let's say you get on a bus, validate a 30 min ticket, take the bus for 20 minutes, then get off and get on a tram at the 25th minute, you can go all the way with that tram even passed the 30 min mark. However if you get on a vehicle and travel for longer than 30 mins, you cannot get onto another vehicle with that ticket. I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the useful information, but in the video I missed the information about the 30 minute and 90 minute transfer tickets, which I think is the most commonly used. I have a question about these transfer tickets. Can they be purchased at the machines or just on the app? And if one person has the app and wants to buy a ticket for himself and also for his friend, how does the validation process work, does he scan the QR code twice when boarding? Thank you, Tom.
Hey there! The app has the 30 and 90 minute tickets indeed. I have read somewhere that there is some way to use one phone for multiple people but it's convoluted and even the transport company advises not to use it that way (I guess you need multiple accounts and log in and out etc but that takes time and sometimes errors etc). Luckily the major stations and center of Budapest is full of vending machines, so buying paper based tickets in absence of the app is fairly easy 😊
I always use the public transport whenever I’m in BP. Never a taxi and no bus if I can avoid them (I just don’t like busses). Although the tram and HÉV networks are smaller than they were in the old days (I still have a map of BP on the wall from 1954 with all public transport lines; got it from my father, I’m old but not that old 😅), they are still very extensive, frequent and relatively cheap. But I guess I will never see a timetable again, anywhere, that says “in daytime hours: every 30 seconds” (as was the case for trams 4 and 6).
Great video as are all your other videos about Budapest. A couple of questions: we are two senior (68 and 72) who are going to Budapest in May. As someone else noted, public transit is free for a least some seniors, but it isn't clear to me if free applies to us, as we are permanent residents of Spain but are citizens of the U.S.A. We have Spanish I.D. cards. Can you clarify? Also, if it is free, do you just board and then show your I.D. if a fare inspector asks? Is it true that there are no turnstiles?

There were no 90' tickets available to buy at the machines, we had to biy two single to get to nyugati from the airport with 200e and M3, the last time there were transfer tickets, not now
What I didn't get is, if you buy a timed pass (e.g. 72h) on the app, do you still need to scan the QR code every time you enter the bus or metro? And do you need an internet connection for inspection when you bought a timed pass?

Hey there! For the 24 and 72h passes the validity starts from the purchase, on vending machines you can set a different starting time for the physical passes. You only need to scan the qr code if you board a "front boarding only" vehicle, or you need to pull up your qr code if there is an inspection. 😉 I hope this clarifies 😊

Hello, Thanks for the video :) Im currently searching for transportation for my trip to Budapest. I've come across the fact that I have a 48-hour bono option. Can you explain how this works? What is the method of validating it? Although you have explained how to do it using a single ticket and the mobile app, you haven't explained how to do it with bono transport (24h-48h-72h). So, I'm a little confused. Thank you in advance.
Hey there! The 24h, 48h and 72h travel cards work the same way as passes they are just named differently. They are valid from purchase or from time you set the validity to start. If it's a physical paper, you don't need to validate that. The date and time of validity is already on the paper and you'll just need to show them to drivers with front boarding vehicles, or to inspectors when asked 😊I hope this helps.

I knew about validating my ticket but I did end up going in the wrong direction a number of times!. I thought this video might include something about the two different metro systems which don't seem to interconnect.
Hey there! Not sure what "two metro systems" you refer to, there is a single subway network with M1-M2-M3-M4 lines. There is a Suburban railway line (H5) which starts underground at Batthanyi but comes to the surface after the 2nd stop, however that is not a subway, which is why it doesn't have the "M" designation like the rest and isn't branded anywhere as a metro :)
@StuffedCabbageAdventures You would know better than me. I've only visited Budapest three times. I was referring to the metro that used old Moscow style trains and runs very much like the metros in Russia and Ukraine, and the smaller trains that run on a system that runs just under the surface of one of the main streets. But perhaps I'm confused. One thing I know for sure is that toilets at Keleti station are the dirtiest in Europe! But that's not your fault.
Hi we are coming to Budapest in March, our accommodation is near Nyugati palyaudvar station what would be the way to get there from the airport please?
Well it depends on how many of you are there, if it's just a few people then either taking the 100E Bus to it's terminus at Deák Ferenc tér, and then switching over to the M3 Subway to Nyugati Pályaudvar is the most convenient (requiring the Special Bus ticket then a regular ticket for the subway), or using 200E with regular tickets to it's terminus at Kőbánya Kispest then switching over to same M3 Subway taking it longer to Nyugati Pályaudvar may be cheaper as only the 2 regular tickets are required in that case (or a timed ticket of 90 mins). If there are a lot more people, while these options are still valid, perhaps a Shuttle Bus like MiniBud would be a convenient solution.

Please can you explain to me what is the difference when buying a block of 10 tickets for the city transport, I saw that there are three variants?
Hey there, not sure what other types of 10 block tickets you saw as the website of BKK only shows the simple 10 block. It's the same as regular single tickets but since you buy in bulk it's cheaper. A single ticket is 450 huf and 10 block is 4000 HUF making an inidivial ticket only 400 huf.

Are the 24h or 72h passes good for one type of communication only? Like separate for metro, and separate for trams and busses? Could you please explain that? I want to visit Budapest at the end of the month for maybe 3 days.
Hey there! There are no different tickets for Metro, trams or Buses. BKK who is the company operating the Public Transport of Budapest issues tickets and passes for all the public transport vehicles. But as noted in the video, the Airport Special Service Bus (100E) requires its own special ticket and regular single tickets and passes are not accepted on it. :)

Hey there! A video may not come out on that anytime soon, but as a general advice : don't exchange at the airport, the rates are terrible there. In the city center especially near Deák Ferenc tér or Váci utca you'll find many chain and franchise exchange places that are reliable. Just walk around, look at their exchange rates and decide which one you find more better, but it's rare to see huge differences 😊 and in the end, most places accept bank cards 😊
I want to use a 90 min ticket to get from Budapest Airport to 1074 Budapest, District VII. However, I'm not sure if the ticket is valid for Tram 6 and / or Bus 578? Can anyone confirm? I've had a look at the website but still not clear

Hey there! Travel Passes don't need to be validated, as they are valid from the time of purchase (or the time you set when you buy them). You'll just need to show them when there is an inspection or when you need to frontboard a vehicle.
If I get a 24 hour paper pass, do I need to validate each time I get on a different form of transport?
Hey there! The pass is valid from the moment of purchase or the validity start you set when you purchase it until the end of the validity period (24h, 72h etc.) No need to "validate" like a regular ticket, only need to show it when there is an inspection or when you board a "front boarding only" vehicle as shown in the video :)
if I buy a multi day pass on the app does it have to be validated? validate each time of use? TIA
Hey there! A multiday pass does not need to be validated it is "valid" from the time of purchase or the validity period you set when you buy it. You will however need to scan a QR code when boarding a vehicle that's front boarding only. This is the way you can show to the driver that you have a valid pass :) I hope this helps to clarify :)

Could you please also recommend a good reputable car rental agency in Budapest? I would like to be able to rent a car when I visit Hungary, so that I can drive over to Miscolc and Bükki National Park, Pecs, and other places.
I am seeing quite a few reviews of car rental agencies where customers complain of rental agencies unfairly accusing them of car damage where there was no damage, basically rental agencies are perceived as acting unfairly, trying to scam customers. I would like to get a referral to a rental agency that is not known for engaging in such practices:) I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Hey there! Unfortunately I do not have a deep knowledge about car rental agencies, there are the large ones (AVIS, HERTZ, SIXT, Europcar etc) and there are a few smaller ones. What I heard from friends who did work in the industry of car rental is that unfortunately it's an existing practice of those companies to try and squeeze money out of the customers with some hidden fees like insurance even if you didn't want it etc, and going through their customer service may be a nightmare experience on purpose so you step away of going through with the complaint process. Perhaps on Facebook groups such as "Things to do in Budapest" there may be other locals or travelers who can recommend rental companies they may have used!

That’s what I am doing - going through travel forums on Tripadvisor etc., but unfortunately for every positive review for any rental company there are multiple negative ones lol. Hey there! There is no specific ticket for Children. Under 6 years the travel is actually free for them :) While the official website doesn't state this, I would recommend to have the ID of your child with you so that in case inspectors ask to prove the age, you'll have it with you :)

Hey there! Only for the Subway you can use 1 Ticket for a travel across the entire network with a Transfer from one line to the other. The other vehicles like trams and buses require individual tickets. SO if you use the Subway, then take a Bus, that's 2 single tickets. There are also the 30 min and 90 min tickets, those can be used to connect from one vehicle to the other, irrespective of it being a Subway or a Tram or Bus.

Hello there! Yes, the public transport will be free for you, but I am not sure about 100E as that is a special service with special ticket however 200E would be free as it is part of the regular network. Just make sure to carry id with you in case age needs to be verified 😊

I love your videos, but I think in this one, you did not mention the fact that when someone is retired, and above a certain age, most public transportation is free to them.. I was in Budapest in June and I was told that I do not have to pay on public transportation.
If you are retired and can therefore travel free do you need a special pass ?

(This will probably get deleted but its solid advice)Top Tip for those who use the public transport freely(Broke ass teenagers or budget travelers or blithering idiots). BKK inspectors, operate ( 99 percent of the time )within tram line 2 and 4. There are permanent inspectors in Kossuth Lajos ter ( Metro line 2 - Red line ) and Deak Ferenc Ter as well as Széll Kálmán tér ( Also metro line 2 ). So,if you want to avoid inspectors, dont use metro line 2 that much. Dont enter or exit the metro from Széll Kálmán tér or Kossuth Lajos. Deák Ferenc is pretty safe. Use buses for better or worse,they do the same job,also you get to see buildings and stuff. And walk a bit more. Slightly more.
But,im not suggesting that you should do it....but im saying that you can do it...
We do not endorse doing this :) Nobody should break the rules of a country that welcomes you as a guest. The Public transport is cheap and if you wish to spend less, walking is generally a good option. On the other hand, Inspectors can come randomly anywhere, not just the trams mentioned but almost all the trams. It's more rare to see them on Front Boarding vehicles, but if you don't have a ticket you cannot board them anyways. It's not worth the stress to always look above your shoulder if there are any inspectors coming, or when you get caught and need to go through the agony of administration and paying the fine on the spot... Plus if you think you can get away with it if you don't have resicency in Hungary, the Inspectors can call the Police on you.... so please don't "blitz" as we call it :)
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures Actually I found a hack. If you say you're a political refugee, for some reason they leave you alone 😂. A Ukrainian lady told me that and it works. I've tested it.
Plus we must not forget to mention that in metro line 1 you can buy tickets from the booths inside if there is no ticket vending machines
