I definitely prefer P-90s on a Goldtop!
P90s always have that tone where it reminds of me of a playful naughty kid trying to do crazy stuff..

Would a les Paul standard 50’s with p90’s vs a Les Paul standard 50’s with humbuckers be a fairer comparison maybe?
Gibson confirmed to me that all the P90s they put in both Custom Shop and USA are the same potted pick ups. So it’s really just the single coil P90s that to me have a way better sound than potted humbuckers. Having said that, I like the sound of the unpotted humbuckers on the CS Les Pauls as well. They squeal 👍
i thought in general p90 have more highs and lows and are hotter with more bite humbuckers are fuller and warmer with mellower overtone
So is the 54 reissue a custom shop in Darfur? And is the gold top with humbuckers just a regular modern remake or is it a custom shop 57 reissue? Cuz that would have a substantial difference
The humbucker one sounds duller and less dynamic. The P90 had a lot more dynamic range and a lot of more color. Both pretty. Both sound good. But the P90 sounded like the winner.
The older I get the more I realize WAY too may in the industry don't know how to demo guitars let alone play. They just think they do. That being said this '54 LP double gold top is sweet, but it better be being a CS.
I wish they'd make a 3-P90 Les Paul with a 5-way switch like a Strat. That's a guitar I'd buy. Never understood why Gibson puts 3-way switches on their 3 pickup guitars.
That being said, this is a great comparison video. Really like that you play the exact same thing on each guitar, with the same amp settings.
I actually find that 50's gold top to sound extremely dull compared to other Standard 50's ive heard and tried. Is it just me? Or is that 50's a bad one?
A few months ago I bought a 2021 50’s Goldtop and I thought the burst buckets sucked ! So I had aLollards Imperial put in it , sounds great !
Current/recent Gibson humbucker pickups sound like a poot in a can. Just swap the pickups to bring it to life. They’re making great playing/quality guitars again the pickups are just dull….
