I would love to hear this side by side with a Gretsch G5210T-P90. I know they're in totally different leagues, but if you get 95% of the way there at 15% of the cost, that's a massive win for us little guys.
100% agree however that draw to having a Gibson or whatever you think is awesome is just there. If my guitar Heroes played X I would probably get that guitar. Sadly I picked the Edge who has about 30 of them.

Talking about bonding with guitars... I pre-ordered a PRS Fiore and waited quite a while for it. I was so excited to get one. I was so confused when the day finally came that it was in my hands. Everything about the guitar was amazing, but something didn't "click." I played it every day for two weeks but still didn't feel it. I tried creating custom Helix patches, and it sounded great. There was no reason not to love the guitar. Ultimately, I returned the guitar because I couldn't justify keeping such an amazing (and expensive) guitar in my collection if I had several other guitars I would rather play. Some days I wonder if I would bond with a *different* Fiore. But I am certain I did the right thing by sending it back.
As a long-time worship guitarist I totally get the obvious gravitation towards the more „chimey“ bolt-on guitar camp for CCM. But I soooooo love the Les Paul for worship music! They just sing…and they sound so full and satisfying. I congratulate you, my friend!!! That‘s a gorgeous guitar!!!

Congratulations on the big purchase! I picked up a 68 Gold Top Reissue a year or so ago and it’s incredible. They do have a little bit of a Tele vibe with the p90s. Kind of like a Tele with more attitude.
I have this same guitar ( I believe mine is a 2013 Custom shop '56 reissue). I bought it at a ridiculously good price from a great friend). It was the first P-90 guitar that I ever owned. The pickups are magical. I usually have the Rhythm pickup Volume on about 7.5 and the Bridge tone on 7.5. Switching between the pickups gives me three great tonal options. Only drawback is that it's heavy. I used to take it out for gigs, but I think I'm going to start keeping it at home for studio use only, to save my back and keep the guitar safe. I have owned a few Les Pauls although all Epiphone. The shape of the body is iconic and close to a perfect shape. They do not sound like anything else and singlecut bodies have more bottom end and they do the rock thing as well or better than anything else. I recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul Junior, one of the new inspired by Gibson models with the single dog ear P-90. It rings like an acoustic unplugged and sounds glorious thru a nice tube combo amp. No distortion or overdrive pedals needed. What a sound! This may be my favorite Les Paul. I have always wanted one and can’t justify spending $1,500 to get the Gibson version. Reissue juniors are even higher than that and for this guitar I feel that is totally unreasonable. Glad you got a goldtop. That guitar looks and sounds great and it suits you very well I think! Rock on brother!
im not a LP fan. But i recently played a vintage 52 lp. Was the greatest sounding guitar I've ever played, and best intonation too surprisingly. playability was ok, but didn't mind it because it sounded so awesome. So balanced with those p90s
I think bonding with your guitars is important because you need to feel inspired to play it and trust is will deliver the sound/vibe you are looking for. I think every guitar I have bonded to differently and over different periods of time. My AVRI Jaguar and my 1971 Fender Bronco sat on the wall for a while before I really bonded with them but now they are keepers. Once I put the Curtis Novak pickups in my Jazzmaster, it also became a keeper. For my birthday, I picked up a Squier FSR Jaguar and I instantly bonded with it in the store. This is probably because I Ioved the neck profile, the color (silver sparkle with a matching and I had already bonded with my other Jaguar. It's also really important to have all your guitars setup properly. You might not bond with a guitar if doesn't stay tune, has bad pickups or sounds bad due to a bad setup. I was not into my Fender Mustang until I learned how to setup the vibrato and it's another keeper for me now.
I currently only own Epiphones, 3 Les Pauls and an Extura. To deal with the tuning stability issues, I put String Butlers on them. They work very well.
Reverend Gristle 90...I need to hear those two side by side because that Gristle 90 is probably the best one I've ever heard. Plus, you know...Bigsby. Just wish I could justify the price to pick one up.
Congrats on a great guitar. I went back and forth between the R4 and R6 and felt the R4 sounded better. There's something about that wraparound bridge that does something. That's not to say my experience with the R4 was good. The first one I bought had a frozen truss rod - appalling for a "custom shop" instrument. Gibson built me another and that one is perfect. The tone is almost like the nastiest tele ever.
This is literally my dream guitar as in I dreamed I was playing this exact guitar in church some weeks ago. Which is strange because I’m a Strat, Tele person. I think it might be that the gold top has some real early 2000s Nigel Hendroff ‘For all you’ve done’ mojo.
Congrats man! Just started being interested in Gibsons last year. An old luthier friend of mine had a gold top and a special. Really sweet guitars and I honestly think they get cooler as they get older.
Hey Brian, I'm with you man! I have a 1982 Les Paul Deluxe gold top with P90s. All the Deluxe models I've seen have mini humbuckers. This one has most likely been modified, so I don't know what brand the P90s are. I don't have a lot of guitars - a 335, a couple of Strats, a Telecaster and a PRS. The Les Paul blows them all into the weeds. It's awesome!
Every guitarist should experience THE once in a lifetime guitar. I was blessed to get mine early. Nearly 50 years ago I bought a new LP Custom and never sold or modified it. It is still the best of all Ive owned for playing worship. I still love playing my Strat and Gretsch and other guitars but I am bonded thoroughly to that one. That one cuts through the mix in a way that I dont hear very often. Its not something I can quantify. It's a place between the drums, keyboard, vocals. I heard a vintage Strat reviewed at Andertons last year that was transcendent. The comment made was " I actually wish I had not played it" It was quite unaffordable LOL.
I have the same one and put a Bigsby on mine. It’s just under 8lbs without the Bigsby. I have player series Gretsch, Fender CS, etc. but the Les Paul R6 is the best guitar I’ve ever played. It can do anything
The P90's are killer on that R6. Keep it. Even if you don't play it a ton, they record very well and hold their value over time. I have an R8 from '94 that I sometimes just don't play much, but as of the last few months, it's been getting the job done every single time I get it out. Pairing it with an EF86 Matchless Clubman or the B Channel on a C30 is just the ticket for alot of newer songs. I keep seeing Jazzmasters, Jaguars, and Teles with humbuckers, but the mahogany/maple combo on an LP just darkens that woody the tone enough, and with the vol/tone controls and amp setup, you can use all pickup combinations for entire set lists. I'm not a fan of the higher output pickups, so a low wind PAF or a P90 are just the ticket in modern worship IMHO. Volume on 10 into a Marshall with EL34's is unreal, but various dirt pedals out on the market make these alot easier to "adopt" into almost any rig. Setup/action is usually easy to adjust on a Custom Shop (i.e. they can get really low and still not buzz), they weigh less, and when they are in tune they are alot of fun thanks to that scale shorter scale length. I've tried lots of PRS but have never bonded with one.
I have a Les Paul Special with P90's. I love the P90's and especially the bridge pickup. My Tele is my go to guitar. My Les Paul Standard is second and the Special because of the way it sounds could take the Standard to 3rd.
Big fan of worship music. The band at my church is really really good. I also love social distortion I think Mike ness has an incredible sound on his guitar. Good stuff I hope to see more of this guitar in future videos sounds awesome. Congrats
The biggest reason they go out of tune is the Tune-o-matic bridge design. A great guitar tech in PA introduced me to Tone Pros Bridges and I added them to all Les Paul style guitars. They lock down the tail piece and improve the tuning stability by a mile.
I agree with how great these guitars sound! (That Matchless helps!!) But I think I would go with the 1968 version with the medium jumbo frets. Brother, that is an articulate guitar. IMHO, staying in tune is a function of how well the nut is cut. A little fine sandpaper and some nut sauce or other prep, makes a difference in tuning.
In the early 00s I worked for Manny’s Music. I was pretty excited when we got an Epi 56RI LP. Until I began tuning it. The peg just fell off. 😂 I understand that Epi QC has come a long way, but I’ll never forget this happening.

Scale length - is that why you've not bonded yet? Do you play any other short scale guitars regularly? I took a while to adjust from a Les Paul to an S-type guitar. Incidentally, that Epiphone 56 LP reissue was the first guitar I bought and regret selling it - I prefer the P90s to the humbuckers.

Sounds amazing. It wasn’t long ago I learned the solo on Another Brick in the Wall part 2, was played on a Les Paul. Specifically, a gold top with P90s. This guitar keeps coming up in my sphere. Maybe I will try one. 😂
For those on a budget, the les Paul specials with P90s are excellent. I actually prefer my special more than the custom because it’s lighter. Just change the pickups… oh, and I’d keep that guitar; you’ll bond with it sooner or later.
I looked at both the cs and the standard. Couldn't see a difference. Same woods, same construction, same finish. Bought the standard for half the price. I'm in love. Now i have 7.
Give it time. Some are worth keeping and giving extra time. If you sell it, you won’t be able to get it back. Definitely play it live before you decide. For me, LP is checks no boxes on paper. Heavy, not ergonomic at all, no master volume, etc etc. but man….it just has the sound! Mine is very close to the sound I hear in my head.
If possible can you guys try out and review a Gretsch G5210T-P90? It's like this guitar just with the Gretsch touch, would love to see a comparison if possible
I bought an Epiphone Les Paul. Because it looked so good. But I never really bonded with it. Then I sold it to a friend of mine a few years ago. Then I started thinking about it again so I bought it back from him and now I bond with it greatly! Funny 'eh?!?!?!?
Hi: I never wanted a gold top. I didn't like anything about it. I thought the pick ups were probably weaker. After years and years, I finally got a Murphy lab R6. It Blew me away. It is my favorite over my strats, telly and Les custom
It’s on par for sure. The historic re-issue Gibsons are unique because they’re built as close as they can to the way they were in ‘56. So you’ll see the same kind of things as the ‘50’s like the bleed into the binding, etc. The other boutique guitars are more ‘perfect’, if that makes sense - same for stuff like the high end PRS. But given what Gibson was going for, the Goldtop is awesome and really plays as good as anything else we have.
I totally get it it’s like handcrafted guitars, or you’ll feel the imperfections, but yet uniqueness of the builders hand verses the cnc. Computer animated building stuff congratulations man it’s my dream Vittar too. I don’t know why I have it’s a slash thing or just something about P90s on a gold top.

Brian, i know this doesn't really matter as far as amplified sound, but how does that thing sound "acoustically" unplugged? I've heard Gibson's are really accoustically loud and resonant and feel really nice to play by giving you that haptic feedback
Phil McNight said it perfectly in the last few weeks so this is a paraphrase: “Gibson makes a lot of guitars that are just kinda meh, but when they get it right, they REALLY get it right! I own a Custom Shop R8 Bourbonburst , it cost me over 5 g, and it is the best guitar I have ever played. Period. I shot it out in afternoon with around 10 other Les Pauls, 1 that bring a Historic Series Historic worth almost 2000 bucks more and it was great, but the one I chose was just as good plus it had a ruder, ready to brawl it out in the alley sound when required. I will never sell it, you have found a keeper too, you should not sell yours, you will regret letting it slip away, I can pretty much guarantee, and yours sounds just killer. Don’t let the naysayers ever get you down.
Never been much a fan of Gibson either, unitll I got a 335 for dirt cheap with a cracked headstock repair. Bonded with that thing like no other, the tones are endless and it just has that extra 15% that I dont get out of anything else
The short scale length might not be your cup of tea for electrics. Less spanky and bright to my ear. I know the feeling, I cannot bond with any PRS guitars, due to the neck and headstock, and the sound is harsh and dissonant to my ear. Keep it as long as it inspires you but maybe not longer :)
Oh common, I’ve watched your YT vids for years and learned so much from you, but now you’ve gone off the rails. The best sounding guitar, with P-90s? 😢 I cannot imagine that contradiction. I admit you make it sound sweet, but you do know that those P-90s were only an early, interim pickup in search of a bettter richer tone, that Gibson brought out 2 years later with the 1958 PAF. Of course over the past 50 years many, many, many better pickups were innovated, especially by PRS and Seymore Duncan, in addition to Gibson. But I am happy for you that you have procured such a nice guitar that is perfect for you. Some of my best and favorite guitars I’ve gotten used without the pain of sticker shock. So good for you.
Thank you! Actually, if you dig deeper into the story of the PAF, Seth Lover invented them in an effort to sound like the P90’s but without the noise/hum issues. So it really is kind of an imitation of the mid 50’s P90 designs. The 50’s P90’s from Gibson are regarded as some of the best sounding pickups ever made. But there are certainly many other great designs that have come after them as well.
Congrats!! LP Goldtop with P90’s is on my bucket list, but I would be going for the 1960’s reissue as the neck is much slimmer. Kinda surprised you didn’t seem to know that the 1950’s necks are much chunkier.
I have never really given Gibson a chance. I personally cannot handle the FAT baseball bat necks, plus they sue everybody all the time for everything. Not saying they don't have the right to, but it feels like such a buzzkill for the rest of the guitar community vs. taking it as a compliment that people try to replicate what they did. On a totally separate note, I am AMAZED at how much the tone changes just based on your picking harshness & the volume/tone controls. Same patch, totally different settings. Do you attribute that mostly to the P90's, or the parameters of the patches, etc...?
Thanks! A good bit of that has to do with the guitar/pickups, but a lot of it is due to Fractal/Axe-FX - it's super responsive just like a real amp is. But this guitar seemed to bring it out more than most, too.

That lead-in jam sounded incredible. Especially the clean tones. So clear and vibrant.
I purchased a Gibson Custom Shop 64’ SG this last year. Price tag is hard to swallow, but the quality is unmatched. Congrats.

Sounds and looks AMAZING!! My friend gifted me a 1977 Ibanez "Les Paul Custom." May appear sacrilege, but it sounds better than my Gibson LP Standard.

Volume on 10 into a Marshall with EL34's is unreal, but various dirt pedals out on the market make these alot easier to "adopt" into almost any rig. Setup/action is usually easy to adjust on a Custom Shop (i.e. they can get really low and still not buzz), they weigh less, and when they are in tune they are alot of fun thanks to that scale shorter scale length. I've tried lots of PRS but have never bonded with one.
I have a Les Paul Special with P90's. I love the P90's and especially the bridge pickup. My Tele is my go to guitar. My Les Paul Standard is second and the Special because of the way it sounds could take the Standard to 3rd.
Big fan of worship music. The band at my church is really really good. I also love social distortion I think Mike ness has an incredible sound on his guitar. Good stuff I hope to see more of this guitar in future videos sounds awesome. Congrats
The biggest reason they go out of tune is the Tune-o-matic bridge design. A great guitar tech in PA introduced me to Tone Pros Bridges and I added them to all Les Paul style guitars. They lock down the tail piece and improve the tuning stability by a mile.
Y'all really need to try a Grosh. He puts everything to shame especially in the pickups and neck.

I agree with how great these guitars sound! (That Matchless helps!!) But I think I would go with the 1968 version with the medium jumbo frets. Brother, that is an articulate guitar. IMHO, staying in tune is a function of how well the nut is cut. A little fine sandpaper and some nut sauce or other prep, makes a difference in tuning.
In the early 00s I worked for Manny’s Music. I was pretty excited when we got an Epi 56RI LP. Until I began tuning it. The peg just fell off. 😂
I understand that Epi QC has come a long way, but I’ll never forget this happening.

Scale length - is that why you've not bonded yet? Do you play any other short scale guitars regularly? I took a while to adjust from a Les Paul to an S-type guitar.
Incidentally, that Epiphone 56 LP reissue was the first guitar I bought and regret selling it - I prefer the P90s to the humbuckers.

Sounds amazing. It wasn’t long ago I learned the solo on Another Brick in the Wall part 2, was played on a Les Paul. Specifically, a gold top with P90s. This guitar keeps coming up in my sphere. Maybe I will try one. 😂

For those on a budget, the les Paul specials with P90s are excellent. I actually prefer my special more than the custom because it’s lighter. Just change the pickups… oh, and I’d keep that guitar; you’ll bond with it sooner or later.

I looked at both the cs and the standard. Couldn't see a difference. Same woods, same construction, same finish. Bought the standard for half the price. I'm in love. Now i have 7.
Give it time. Some are worth keeping and giving extra time. If you sell it, you won’t be able to get it back.
Definitely play it live before you decide. For me, LP is checks no boxes on paper. Heavy, not ergonomic at all, no master volume, etc etc. but man….it just has the sound! Mine is very close to the sound I hear in my head.

The p90 pickups in CS (r6) are usually Alnico iii magnets.
If possible can you guys try out and review a Gretsch G5210T-P90? It's like this guitar just with the Gretsch touch, would love to see a comparison if possible
I bought an Epiphone Les Paul. Because it looked so good. But I never really bonded with it. Then I sold it to a friend of mine a few years ago. Then I started thinking about it again so I bought it back from him and now I bond with it greatly! Funny 'eh?!?!?!?

Hi: I never wanted a gold top. I didn't like anything about it. I thought the pick ups were probably weaker. After years and years, I finally got a Murphy lab R6. It Blew me away. It is my favorite over my strats, telly and Les custom
How does the Gibson custom shop compare to the high-end boutique guitars that you guys have just an overall quality in build or is it a standalone ?
It’s on par for sure. The historic re-issue Gibsons are unique because they’re built as close as they can to the way they were in ‘56. So you’ll see the same kind of things as the ‘50’s like the bleed into the binding, etc.
The other boutique guitars are more ‘perfect’, if that makes sense - same for stuff like the high end PRS. But given what Gibson was going for, the Goldtop is awesome and really plays as good as anything else we have.
I totally get it it’s like handcrafted guitars, or you’ll feel the imperfections, but yet uniqueness of the builders hand verses the cnc. Computer animated building stuff congratulations man it’s my dream Vittar too. I don’t know why I have it’s a slash thing or just something about P90s on a gold top.

Brian, i know this doesn't really matter as far as amplified sound, but how does that thing sound "acoustically" unplugged? I've heard Gibson's are really accoustically loud and resonant and feel really nice to play by giving you that haptic feedback
I did talk about that in the video but ended up cutting it to make it shorter. I would say it’s just as you described. Definitely feels alive.
Phil McNight said it perfectly in the last few weeks so this is a paraphrase: “Gibson makes a lot of guitars that are just kinda meh, but when they get it right, they REALLY get it right! I own a Custom Shop R8 Bourbonburst , it cost me over 5 g, and it is the best guitar I have ever played. Period. I shot it out in afternoon with around 10 other Les Pauls, 1 that bring a Historic Series Historic worth almost 2000 bucks more and it was great, but the one I chose was just as good plus it had a ruder, ready to brawl it out in the alley sound when required. I will never sell it, you have found a keeper too, you should not sell yours, you will regret letting it slip away, I can pretty much guarantee, and yours sounds just killer. Don’t let the naysayers ever get you down.

Never been much a fan of Gibson either, unitll I got a 335 for dirt cheap with a cracked headstock repair.
Bonded with that thing like no other, the tones are endless and it just has that extra 15% that I dont get out of anything else

The short scale length might not be your cup of tea for electrics. Less spanky and bright to my ear. I know the feeling, I cannot bond with any PRS guitars, due to the neck and headstock, and the sound is harsh and dissonant to my ear. Keep it as long as it inspires you but maybe not longer :)

Oh man - they’re very different guitars. So it would depend on a lot of things, honestly. There’s no ‘best’ really.
I definitely need a guitar with P90s. I don't need to spend $5000 on it, though. Maybe a Les Paul Special Tribute. Those are more like $1000.

Oh common, I’ve watched your YT vids for years and learned so much from you, but now you’ve gone off the rails. The best sounding guitar, with P-90s? 😢 I cannot imagine that contradiction. I admit you make it sound sweet, but you do know that those P-90s were only an early, interim pickup in search of a bettter richer tone, that Gibson brought out 2 years later with the 1958 PAF. Of course over the past 50 years many, many, many better pickups were innovated, especially by PRS and Seymore Duncan, in addition to Gibson. But I am happy for you that you have procured such a nice guitar that is perfect for you. Some of my best and favorite guitars I’ve gotten used without the pain of sticker shock. So good for you.
Thank you! Actually, if you dig deeper into the story of the PAF, Seth Lover invented them in an effort to sound like the P90’s but without the noise/hum issues. So it really is kind of an imitation of the mid 50’s P90 designs.
The 50’s P90’s from Gibson are regarded as some of the best sounding pickups ever made. But there are certainly many other great designs that have come after them as well.
Congrats!! LP Goldtop with P90’s is on my bucket list, but I would be going for the 1960’s reissue as the neck is much slimmer. Kinda surprised you didn’t seem to know that the 1950’s necks are much chunkier.

I have never really given Gibson a chance. I personally cannot handle the FAT baseball bat necks, plus they sue everybody all the time for everything. Not saying they don't have the right to, but it feels like such a buzzkill for the rest of the guitar community vs. taking it as a compliment that people try to replicate what they did. On a totally separate note, I am AMAZED at how much the tone changes just based on your picking harshness & the volume/tone controls. Same patch, totally different settings. Do you attribute that mostly to the P90's, or the parameters of the patches, etc...?
Thanks! A good bit of that has to do with the guitar/pickups, but a lot of it is due to Fractal/Axe-FX - it's super responsive just like a real amp is. But this guitar seemed to bring it out more than most, too.
