    Start chopping wood and don't stop until the snow is to deep. Winter survival is the key. If you're gonna be living there all winter you need that stove. Remodeling waits until spring. Best of luck

      I completely agree! Prior planning prevents piss poor performance! Be prepared for winter first! Keep extra food on hand! And you can always boil snow for water!

    I've had an off grid cabin for 40 years. I could write a book giving you advice for off grid living but there are plenty out there for you to read. The advice I feel you should know from the start is do not put PV panels on the roof. The roof will be comprised. Size your system for future expansion because you will expand. Do not buy a Canadian Tire solar kit or any "all in one box system". Consult with a local solar dealer he can help with budgeting one step at a time.

    I’ve stayed in worse cabins. It’s going to be fabulous. The view is great. Looks like someone was able to drive in. No trespassing signs might be helpful, or you may end up with unexpected visitors! Metal roof, solar and a small wind turbine would be ideal. Little steps.
    Looks like the wildlife have been trimming the fruit trees.

    Invite all your old and new friends for a camp out to help you get started on the renovations and making the property safe for you and Dobby. Those tracks like someone has been driving donuts on the property so could be local youths out for a laugh and free camp ground, please stay safe x

    Looks like once upon a time this used to be a homestead of sorts. Fruit trees and berries around the cabin will help you during the year. I saw what looked like an overgrown medicinal garden. I could ID comfrey and yarrow as you walked around 0:13. I'm sure there are more I couldn't ID with the quick sweep of the area you did.

  • @hollandspinehaven2634

    priority should be wood stove and wood suppy then look into a ram pump for moving that water up hill...you will need a water storage system and set up rain catchment... its a really nice property...

  • @earthangel8730
    @earthangel8730 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    That cabin has lots of potential. I like the plan to open it up inside. A metal roof would be best and getting the woodstove figured out a priority, plus firewood. You've got this! 💪🏼

  • @Shienar99
    @Shienar99 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Also the log book and signatures is a pretty normal thing here
    Many cabin that are more remote are unlocked in case of someone being lost or needing shelter the log books is to let the owners know who and when someone stopped in or passed through

    Don't stress on bears we only have black bears in NS so not much to worry about there
    Be on the look out for coyotes tho
    All coyotes east of Ontario are some precentage wolf some get to the size of a small German shepherd in NS will form packs and there have been some incidents of them attacking people in CB but you dog is what you really have to worry about

    Tyler, I would die for a property like that. The first thing would be getting leagal access with a vehicle to the property. Plant fruit trees, lots of them and read about how to prune and care for them. A way for income once they start producing, Check out what is best for your area. I have done this on a much smaller scale but in the last 10 years I can pick and eat, apples, plums, cherries, red raspberries, blueberries, elder berries, strawberries, blackberries, pears, figs and a small vineyard with several verities. Plant Berries of all kinds in patches, Raised bed gardening. An 4x4ATV with winch to grab logs, a portable saw mill. 15 years ago I spent a week in Cape Breton , a Beautiful place. Make a plan and think about it a lot.. Look into RAM Pumps, no electricity needed to pump water from the stream up to the cabin.

    Hello new resident to the area. In this type of situation where the property and "homesite" is so remote and cannot be defended 24/7 when you may be absent the only practical way forward may well be to try to start up a good relationship with the locals. Hopefully the majority are law abiding and respectful of property boundaries and of new people to the area. Ner do wells can be a bigger challenge than you could ever hope to win. Having said that welcome to the Maritimes and Nova Scotia in particular. Always look for the best in your new neighbors. You may be pleasantly surprised. A trail cam or two well hidden in a tree can record who comes by to see what is new in the neighborhood. Have a nice day

    If you're ever going to be there with 2+ people, having a bedroom with walls would be nice. Sometimes people are under the weather and need a quiet place to relax or sleep. Also, if you have a large room without walls, it's actually challenging to use the space efficiently.

    Instead of ripping and tearing wallsk,do a surgcal removal of materials to save as much materia to reuse.l. They mak rubber roof coating that will make the roof last longer. A Small hydro plant may be in order on the creek to shcarge batttieries. You need a quad to help improve the place.

  • @darrensmith9143
    @darrensmith9143 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Very cool. As someone else has mentioned, micro-hydro as opposed to solar is the way to go with running water adjacent to your cabin. That atv trail looks very well used, hope you don't have problems with people used to squatting in your cabin while hunting or such.

    • @tdk1246
      @tdk1246 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like the idea of micro-hydro but this is a winter place. That creek is going to freeze over solid. Wind and solar would be better. You'll need to store water and keep it warm or plan on spending every day and energy to melt snow.

    My only idea would be ???
    I would disassemble the wooded pieces you are discarding …
    And start a wood pile of useable items for future projects ??
    You can stockpile metals too … future trellises for gardening ??
    Screens to cover up raises beds to keep insects out ??
    It’s ok to not know what you r gonna do with it …
    But ideas will come to you later !
    Great progress 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

    A few goats and a few sheep will clean that land right up for you. Select cut not clear-cut trees (silvopasture) if you are interested in raising animals in the end you will create shade wind and shade for livestock and end up with a park like setting. apple trees and blueberries will invite deer on the property if you're a hunter or nature buff

    The stove in the middle is actually nice, you just need to find a round barrel stove. Having the stove centrally located is best for evenly heating the structure.
    The chimney hole is already there, just put on a metal roof and flashing around it with new metalbestos pipe.
    If you do decide to move the stove to an exterior wall make sure it is on a gable end side so snow sliding off the roof will not damage it.
    If you need to patch the roof before you can put on a metal one, use a product called "Through The Roof" that will hold up until you are ready to go metal.

    After seeing what you are going to live with I'm glad I chose boat life instead of land life. Seriously though, I'd try to make the cabin more like home with your shower and toilet inside. You aren't going to be very comfortable in the winter trucking outside to take care of life's necessities. I have a compost toilet on my boat that I made myself, works great. Setup a gray water area outside your cabin for filtering just don't let food waste get in there or you'll attract animals.

  • @wconradjr

    Don’t back the stove up. It’s in the middle so the heat can radiate in all directions to warm the place. Back it up against a wall and you’ll lose 1/2 your heat output to the wall and anything behind it.

    As for the no trespassing signs
    You should tread lightly there depending on the former owners there could be generations of people that have used the land for hunting camping wheeling etc.
    Some people can get really nasty and make your life hell if the feel like you a stepping on their toes even tho you own the property
    And depending on where you are and the town roots you could find yourself on a lot of people's shit list just rubbing one person the wrong way
    It's your property and you can do what you want with it obviously just take you time and relax when people happen by find out their story and tell them your plans give people some time

    Always something I've thought of doing but never did. Kudos for you for trying. The tracks look to be UTV, but I'd bet a small 4x4 such as a Ford Ranger would fit as well with what I saw. If your staying there for the winter it looked like there is no insulation in the attic at all.

    Nice land. What is it with Canada and selling landlocked property? Well it looks like many people have made it into the cabin recently. Expect Visitors? Your just going to have to take your chain saw and make a trail in for the van. Your going to need the wood for winter anyways. Big plans! So exciting. Weird question....what does burning sage do for a house? What a great property! I recall it's land locked, but I'm not sure what that means in Canada as far as gaining access, vehicles, etc. But it sure is beautiful.

      Burning sage can rid a place of unwanted or lingering bad energy

    A ram pump could move water up that little hill. Probably wouldn't work in winter though.

    New to the channel, this is the second video of yours that I watched. You keep saying we and us I'm only seeing you and your dog so is the dog the second person you're commenting about?

      I’m pretty sure she is. I believe it is only Tyler and little Dobby.

    You should be able to back up the stove with a piece of horizontal stove pipe only , could be suported by hanging by a wire form the sealing- the stove should be salvage-able, may be new seals. We still use a lot of woodstoves in our cental european mountains.

    Gorgeous property! Your cabin will be lovely. I think you can get a variance to gain access with your car. Congratulations.

    It take as much or more work to rehab a cabin then build new. I decided to build one about that size and so far I'm at 50 days of work and just finishing the roof now.

    Hey Tyler! Your cabin has so much potential I love it! I’ve been renovating our cabin so I know that you will make it look and feel great! The view from your deck is killer! What a perfect place to sit and enjoy nature. How far is it to your van? T.

    Go pro is a little dizzying when you spin around too fast. I like the view from the front door side for a kitchen. I am wondering if the apple trees were planted or natural. Tin roofs are very noisy in the rain.

      I have a tin roof, it sounds amazing. I love it. Personal preference I suppose.
