I asked my wife to bring me home a bottle of wine, but she bought me a screw top. I had to go out and get a nice bottle with a cork. I drank them both, because of course I did. Now I'm too hungover to try and do the mod... In all seriousness, great work on these videos. Really helped me make my mind up on which cockpit to pick, mods for my gear, etc. Good stuff!
Just when I thought I had exhausted all sim racing content, TH-cam recommends me this nice bloke putting corks inside brake pedals. You've earned yourself another subscriber, mate. Love your channel.
Another good free modification I found is getting a sharp knife and paring down the corners of the rubber block. Only a slight cut that runs down to half the block's length. It makes it more 'conical' which makes it easier to compress initially and makes the transition from spring to rubber block much more progressive and also makes it slightly easier to press 100%.
@@Nickles4 I cut up a "stress Ball" from the dollar store to fit inside the spring and cut down the rubber block by 1/8 inch. And also tapered the rubber block slightly. It works great
Great tip mate. I just used some sponge to fill up the empty space in the spring, so I now have the original rubber + a piece of sponge in the brake spring. I think it's better to do this, because the initial 75% gets stiffer as well, so it flows nicely into the last 25% with the piece of rubber. Also, you can decide how long the piece of sponge is and therefore how much resistance you want to add. Happy with it!
The issue with rubber is when you are pushing hard to gain that extra 0.5 second you got to tailbreak alot. But when you have the rubber you got to focus alot on the breaks as you got to keep tye paddle hard. So i took off the rubber. And switch the clutch spring to the breaks it may sounds silly but worked for me since it helps me alot to soften up the breaks.
Years ago I bought second hand G25. Modded the brake pedal with two springs and a Redbull can. The two springs are of different width, height and thickness. Slipped the thin long one into the thicker wider one and sliced a piece of the can so that it covered the travel of both springs. Slipped it in between the two springs to ensure that the springs didn't interlink. Some WD40 and have never had problems since. Some lubrication spray is needed over time. This has lasted me 100's of hours of racing.
This is one of those moments when I thank my mum for having me sent to take English classes when I was a young boy. Thx, Karl! You've earned a subscriber!
The only problem I see with this mod is that, you placing a lot of stress on the plastic and over time it WILL crack and break. Another easy option is to place some rubber washers or a soft piece of foam or sponge inside the spring on top of the square rubber piece. I went with the sponge option, used an old piece of kitchen sponge, about a inch or 2.5cm tall ( cut round of course but slightly smaller than spring diameter). The brake feels a little stiffer and much easier to modulate, for trail braking and such. Stack two if you want it stiffer! Cheers
Note that this mod will make your brake pedal more firm but the sensor is still the original potentiometer which means that reduced movement also reduces the sensor accuracy. Basically try to keep the cork as thin as possible because the thicker the cork is, the less accurate the sensor will be. It's really a balancing act between firm pedal and sensor accuracy. That said, it's hard to beat the costs of this mod! I think the stiffness of the cork is not important here so you could just use stack of coins instead.
I play GT7 with a G29. In GT7 it is a little bit more difficult, because you cant adjust the travel/response of the brake pedal as you can on PC. Still, it gave me the idea to go out and start trying modifying the pedal on my own. With some sponge inside the spring and some cork and a lot of trials, I can say that you can go not tenths but seconds faster around a track, but the big difference, is of course, consistency. Thanks Karl!!!
Maybe not quite the breakthrough your sequential shifter mod was, but a little free padding doesn’t hurt for those unwilling or unable to do a proper upgrade
I removed rubber in brake pedal and replaced with an OOSHIE toy (soft squishy toy thats a little buzz lightyear) lol..perfect size ..works bloody great push pedal a bit then....... its ooshie time ....and the pedal feels closer to real life now .....its longer than rubber But squishes down to ome third the height pedal contacts sooner and has resistance for longer travel
i actually couldn't wait for your reply I did my own mod using a plastic water bottle cover instead chosing to get a firmer feel and it fit perfectly once you get the compressed air out. i went a full tenth plus faster and posted my video of the results including my Fia Manufacturers race on GT Sport done after the modifications.
This is great. Reduces the useful "resolution" of the pot-meter. But other than that this should be great. The only thing missing for me is the factory rubber piece. (G27). Really cool Karl. Good job.
Hilarious mod :D One additional thing to the calibration: Some arcade or simcade games (I know it's a sim channel but maybe there are viewers who play arcade games too) doesn't have a brake saturation slider, but registers the maximum value for the axis when you setup the input binding (one game I can remember now is the original Test Drive Unlimited, when you apply the pressure at the brakes it will register maximum brake of how far you put the pedals, just like the calibration in windows - without a slider). I never had a console but maybe this can be an option too.
Just thought to say thanks. I did a variation of this mod with a coin and rubber shim probably 1/2 the thickness of your cork one. Slashed 3s off Monza in ACC with a huracan gt3 first outing. Cheers
Great vid. I found that having the bit of cork in there actually reduced the travel too much and just went with a coin. My question is: is the coin likely to damage the plastic that the coin is now pressing against? Not the white bit of plastic you took out, but the black bit inside the spring sleeve. EDIT: For anyone else who's worried about this - I've now moved the coin to the other end of the spring, and it's now inside the red sleeve rather than the black one. The bit of plastic the coin rests against looks a bit stronger than the one in the black sleeve.
I know that this is an old one but if you persevere with the original setup the brake peddle softens over time and works fine. This is what I've found anyway...
I love the brake pedal how it is , only need to push all the way in full lock up which you dont do in a race unless your crashing, it also prevents accidental lock up when cornering in Assetto Corsa Comp
These modes are really great except they make the pedals unusable on most console games. This is because the console measures the POT overall resistance, from 0 to 10K then removes 5% from the total. After that it expects the resulting resistance to be usable. If you can't push the pedal to max then you are losing brake power. Some games will allow you to calibrate, but others do not.
Watched your other video on not taking the rubber out and now im loving the feel of the brake! Will keep this in mind for the future :) Great videos buddy
Nice idea, one problem is in reducing the travel, you are also reducing the sensitivity (resolution) of the potentiometer as the potentiometer is set to measure the travel with the original spring and rubber. Is there still enough resolution/ travel to modulate your braking effectively? Especially with the Logitech brake curve you could find a lack of finesse under hard braking.
No hate here, but i dont get the point of reducing the travel, like with the rubber insert is it not already stiff enough or is it better in anyway to have it stiffer??
Lots of people like it as it feels more like a real race car brake pedal, they have almost no travel at all and are very hard as there's no servo assistance.
Karl. Your videos seem grounded and real with plenty of detailed explanation of your findings. Keep it up, I subbed straight away. Lots of us like to race without buying 2k of race rig! Can you help me? I need to by a BBJ or GTEYE mod to make my g29 more progressive. I use a play seat foldaway and although not taken apart pedals. I imagine it’s got the later stiffer spring as it’s feels ok until hitting the rubber. As I play ACC on PS4 pro my calibration options are limited. So it don’t want to limit the travel much as it will cause issues, just make it more progressive. BBJ or GTeye???
If it's too hard and you're on console then removing the rubber is your only option to soften that last 25% of travel as you can't easily recalibrate (I guess not all games will let you). As for springs I like the GTEye springs, the full set of three work and feel really nice.
@@KarlGosling ok, I have the BBJ coming. was going to swap out rubber for the softer BBJ foam in the hope of more progressive feel at the limit v the rubber step syndrome. I had held back on getting the GTeye until posting here. If the GTEye brake spring allows similar level of travel to stock but more progression then I might buy that today. With the stock rubber in I have the gamma on Acc at 1.75 to get half decent feel. With Gamma at 1.00 it feels impossible to get to %100 braking force.
To be clear it’s not to hard, I have some legs on me! it’s just not progressive enough and the rubber feels more like a stopper than a simulation of brakes at 80-100%
Don't worry if you have to open a fresh bottle of wine, have a drink every time he says "Cork" and you will have polished that bottle off by end of the video.
@Shippoisalegend I'm late to the party on F1 2020 (PS 4). I bought it when is was on special offer when the 21 game came out. I have them both, but as I'm the defending F1 champion with my own team, I'm having too much fun to switch just yet 😀🏁. I'm using a Playseat Challenge, along with all that INDIGO LIME have to offer to stabilise it, placed upon two gaming mats and four non slip rubber mats (all from POUNDLAND but not for a pound (£17 🤔)). Paul The Sim Racer does an excellent video of how to attach all of that to your chair if you have one, check him out. Anyway, chair now very solid and not skating across my wooden floor. Even with the pedal tray mod, you can still get "brake chair lift" under heavy pressure as Karl mentioned. You really have to know your strength or adjust the saturation/deadzone levels accordingly. That being said, I've only just switched to manual gears and non anti-lock brakes. Already seen more control, only problem is the locking under braking. Just traction control left to learn to live without. I did try the clutch as a brake for a while and eventually switched back. Sounds like a good idea putting the clutch spring into the accelerator, or alternatively put a smaller spring inside of the accelerator spring to double up. If you drive a road car, there isn't that much resistance from the accelerator anyway 🤷🏾♂️. Fuck me, I typed all of that before what I actually wanted to say which was that I'll be doing that mod tonight 🙈. I've also got some Teflon tape coming from Amazon (that brown stuff wrapped on the TRUBRAKE cylinderto prevent friction). Also a shot of WD40 should keep it all smooth and moistly lubed under load. Try all that, I'll report back here to let you know how it all goes. Great videos @Karl Gosling. Keep them coming 👍🏿.
Amazon just delivered, but the tape looked massive in the enlarged picture. Turned out tone two skinny ½" rolls, ALWAYS READ THE DIMENSIONS 😡🙈. Ironically, the missus has actually got some Teflon sheets so it's a result, she just has absolutely NO INTEREST IN GAMINGAT ALL !!! I'll add these sheets with double sided tape.
Awesome video with everything clearly explained! I'm not from the UK and it looks like it's difficult/pretty costly to get a 50p coin here. Do you have any alternative to recommend? Washers maybe too fragile...
Dammm nice MOD. My personal only problem, is that the G25 pedals dont have that litle piece of Rubber in the midle of the spring... But... Dammmmm nice mod ;-)
Isn't a good idea, cos cork will crumble eventually, and pieces of them will kill sensors. Much better use plumbing o-ring. Yep, probably it's not free, but its cheap and make from rubber.
I've had my g29 2yrs now no problems the saying is if it isn't broke don't fix it this might be OK for one game but messed up for others which alot of haven't thought about
For a lot of people it is "broke" which is why so many mods exist, for me I also like the factory feel :) It's just the pedal feel, it doesn't mess anything up once calibrated :)
Hey Karl. Seasons Greeting to you fine Sir. I was wondering if I can do this just the same to my gas pedal? Its just that I'm ripping around all day in a gokart now, and in the evening its AC at Nord in the x2010, and the pedal feels like nothing in comparison. I really dont use the brakes on the kart much so there is no problem in making the adjustment from kart to g29, but i'll do the brake anyway while everything is apart. Thanks again for your help, hope you have a great umm xmas. 🏁🏁🏁
@@KarlGosling switched back to the old spring, all wires look intact and in place. Still stuck at 100% very strange considering I didn't touch the throttle pedal at all 🤔
Karl this mod is great! Saved me money for now and improved my performance. Long term would I get any further gains from the true brake in your opinion?
I didn't keep it in after basic testing as the Playseat Challenge will lift off the ground under heavy breaking, this mod is for people with static cockpits who can have a heavy brake pedal.
Whats the point of reducing the distance and then you calibrate it? Most people want to make it softer, not harder. I thought you were going to replace the original rubber, but I was wrong.
Think about it for a minute... what would happen if you didn't? No mate, brake pedals with less travel and that are harder are how all the high end pedals are (for most people this will make you faster and more consistent), we try to get as close to this as we can with the entry level stuff like Logitech. You would only soften it if you are using a desk or wheel stand setup and don't want your chair to rock backwards under braking.
Not a bad idea that. I uses one of the Mrs makeup sponges that i cut down a tad and it works really well. I still want to upgrade my pedals but this will do for now lol
couldn’t you just put a few quarters or 50 pens piece like you call it and it would be the same thing? i understand that those wouldnt have any give at all but i’m not sure the cork has any guve either??

It won't crack, because cork has a poisson's ratio of zero. It's one of the few materials that does not expand when compressed.

Worth a shot mate, cheap and easy to do! :)
Awesome! I love ingenuity such as this 😊.
Free? I mean, looks like you're out a coin there bud. Now I'm gonna be eyeing corks when I'm at friends' places
Think of the brake pedal as a piggy bank.. you're saving it! lol
That peddle looks well to stiff mate..I’m looking to make it softer
Remove the black rubber insert will do that mate.
Interesting video mate
I've had my g29 2yrs now no problems the saying is if it isn't broke don't fix it this might be OK for one game but messed up for others which alot of haven't thought about
For a lot of people it is "broke" which is why so many mods exist, for me I also like the factory feel :)
It's just the pedal feel, it doesn't mess anything up once calibrated :)
@@KarlGosling It does for console games, many of which don't have calibration. Most of them, AFAIK.
Great Job! You explained it very well.
Thank you!
It's not free. You need a wine bottle and a 50p coin. JK very nice video mate
Well, time to gather up some friends
Hmm probably, it works in the same way.
@@KarlGosling Thanks again Karl, all my best to you.
@@KarlGosling Its not much but i sent you 1 gbp. Thankyou for everything.
Great idea buddy not gonna do much for me as I find the pedal too stiff as it is
A lot of people do mate.
Work in assetto Corsa competizione for ps4?
Nice video Karl
hey could you mod the chair to stiffen it? if you braced the hinges that meet the floor?
When i calibrate the pedals my clutch does not show up the same as the brake and pedal instead the clutch moves a + in the box.
Any suggestions??
After recently Installing a brake pedal mod, my throttle and brake are stuck at 100% in game. Do you have any idea how to resolve this issue?
Yes... remove the mod! lol But in seriousness it sounds like something hasn't gone back together correctly.
IMO, probably not mate.
@@KarlGosling thanks mate
This is really useful bro!!
Glad it was helpful!
So does this actually hold up? It seems like the cork would disintegrate in no time.
Great videos Karl, really informative and you're a great presenter. You've got a sub from me :)
Much appreciated!
did you test it in game? please tell us how much did you improve your lap times
I didn't keep it in after basic testing as the Playseat Challenge will lift off the ground under heavy breaking, this mod is for people with static cockpits who can have a heavy brake pedal.
heya karl, your awsome! ty! still not sure i can trust a man that shifts with his left hand ;)
You would only soften it if you are using a desk or wheel stand setup and don't want your chair to rock backwards under braking.
oh it's already Friday!
Top job :)
I find it better to take out everything just use the spring only.
Nice one Karl. I'm to off before the Off license closes get that bottle of Mods .
lol Good man! :)
Great idea mate. Is that a Pioneer DJM 300 mixer in the background at the beginning?
It is, the 300S to be exact (silver edition), well spotted! :)
Hi Karl, enjoying your content. I have a question my g920 brake pedal clicks just once when I press it down, is this normal?
No mate.
So should I do this or just put a gteye spring in it?
They both feel very different to each other, as this is free you may as well try it first :)
@@KarlGosling cheers for the reply! Definitely going to give it a go!
Every time he says cock (cork) kills me 😂
Not a bad idea that. I uses one of the Mrs makeup sponges that i cut down a tad and it works really well. I still want to upgrade my pedals but this will do for now lol
Stealing one of those might get me in trouble! lol
@@KarlGosling lol it was a risky move but it was worth it. Shhhh she'll never know 😳
couldn’t you just put a few quarters or 50 pens piece like you call it and it would be the same thing? i understand that those wouldnt have any give at all but i’m not sure the cork has any guve either??
You could but as you say the cork has a fair bit of "squish" and the coins will not... but it will still work! :)
