I cannot watch this scene without tearing up. There is a universal appeal to this scene, to the whole movie. 2 of the most human emotions are love and the desire for freedom. This movie, from beginning to end, summarizes both love for others and the desire for the desire for freedom.

It brings the story full circle. The Bishop is the one who ‘bought his soul for god’ and urged him to become a better man. It’s fitting that as Valjean ascends to heaven he’s greeted by the man who set him on the path to redemption.

The story of Jean Valjean is precisely the story of a man who committed no sin. In his young age, poor, unemployed, starving, he stole one bread, and for this reason he was sent to a penal colony for decades. Les Misérables is a story about injustice, not sin. And at the end, Valjean can die not because he has found redemption, but because through Cosette, he has succeeded in doing justice to the most vulnerable victim of all the book : Fantine. And he understands that this was the meaning of his life.

    French Version:
    Jean Valjean:
    I no longer depart alone.
    I am happy
    To see your smile again,
Now I at last may die.
    Cosette:
    You will live,
    Papa, you're going to live
    I want you to live,
    Listen to me!
    Valjean:
    Yes Cosette,
    You forbid me to die
    I will try to obey.
On this page, I write my soul's confession
And the secrets that you would want to know.
It's the story, of a man who loved you so,
He confided in you his life
    Before he disappeared.
    Fantine:
    Come with me,
Where chains will never bind you.
    Let me guide you
    Towards supreme happiness.
Lord in Heaven, look down on him in mercy.
    Valjean:
    Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your kingdom.
    Fantine & Eponine:
    Take my hand,
    And come into his glory.
    Take the love,
Which shines when life is fading.
    Fantine, Eponine, & Valjean:
And remember, the truths within your prayer
    To love another person
Is to be near God on Earth.
    Company:
For the will of the people,
    None can extinguish our voice,
And so the song will ring out forever,
As it had so long before,
We wish that our light will
    Penetrate the mask of night,
    To illuminate our land
    And to change our lives.
    The glorious day will come.
When on its way to the ideal,
Mankind will progress from evil to good
    And from falsehoods to truth.
    A dream may yet die,
    But hope lives on forever!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong for humanity?
For every fallen barricade, one hundred more will soon arise,
For the will of the people,
We hear the sound of distant drums,
Announcing the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong for humanity?
For every fallen barricade, one hundred more will soon arise,
For the will of the people,
We hear the sound of distant drums,

    Now you are here

Now I can die in peace

Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die

Who are climbing to the light
For the wretched of the earth
There is a flame that never dies
Even the darkest night will end
    And the sun will rise
They will live again in freedom
In the garden of the Lord
We will walk behind the ploughshare
We will put away the sword
    The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?

Is there a world you long to see?

*They’re basically Laura and Logan from another universe. **1:12** ”It’s the story, of one who turned from hating. A man who only learned to love, when you were in his keeping.” (Hits hard, when you see the similar circumstances)*

It's been years since I have seen the whole play. Refresh my memory.
So, at this point in the story am I to understand that the priest (Wilkinson) whom Valjean originally stole the candlesticks from, has already died too? Just like Cosette's mother who has been dead for ab't 18 yrs.

Since Logan was born around this time iirc, at least in the X-men movie universe.

Yes, yes - in the musical production instead of ‘ it’s the story of a man from hating….’ he sings ‘ It’s a story of one who always loved you - your mother gave her life for you and gave you to my keeping.’ And then you see Cossette and Marius reading the silently the letter together, after she stops crying
