But not in this movie the singing is abhorrent not because of the cast but because of the director doing amazingly stupid choices, sideways has a great video on why the singing and music is quite terrible in this movie including the actors dehydrating themselves and singing for 10 hours straight at max effort which can severely damage your vocal chords permanently

I came to this video almost just to hear that line because it hits so hard. I was thinking about it while I was at work and started tearing up due to how devastatingly vulnerable that line is combined with the slight falter in "he called me brother"

If I could sing that well, I would love to have the chance to perform, because I can feel it, and communicating feeling through sound your body makes must be exhilarating, like a drug. But I cannot sing, instead I am a different kind of artist. I am a writer and photographer. I think people forget that acting is an art, talent, and skill, and a true actor relishes getting up there in front of as many people as they can.

A perfect example of repentance. Turning from sin is no easy feat, it is grueling and painful. Yet, Valjean is so overcome with unbelievable grace given to him by the priest that his soul can only cry out in gratitude and repentance.
Even in our wickedness, God stepped down from His throne and was crucified so that we might be saved. Turn, and live in unison with the Almighty One who died & rose again to save you!

I am reaching, but I fall, and the night is drawing in... As I stare into the void, into the whirlpool of my sin.
I think sadly a lot of us long for this road to Damascus moment which changes everything and we break free of what binds and chokes us in life. However I think real life isn't quite this simple, but I've found myself at this place so many times - reaching but I fall - back to the same old things, but I never give up trying to be better and this story helps me keep trying. This world will always try and grind us down, but that struggle makes our humanity shine all the brighter when we shed even a little light into it's darkness.

Tbis is 24601s deathband rebirth. The silver contains so much symbolism, he judased this priest and he showed him such grace in return regardless. There was a reason he stole silver and not gold. This is a powerful Grace vs law story arc, as noble as the antagonist Javert is he represents the devil chasing him down for his past constantly chasing and accusing him for what he is no longer. Look at what he became, a prisoner to mayor to someone who ultimately sacrificed his own life to redeeme someone else from a bad fate. Its the gospel dude. He got saved bro and saved someone else. Beautiful.

    What have I done?
Sweet Jesus, what have I done?
Become a thief in the night
Become a dog on the run
    Have I fallen so far
And is the hour so late
That nothing remains but the cry of my hate
The cries in the dark that nobody hears
Here where I stand at the turning of the years?
If there's another way to go
I missed it twenty long years ago
My life was a war that could never be won They gave me a number and murdered Valjean When they chained me and left me for dead
Just for stealing a mouthful of bread
Yet why did I allow that man
To touch my soul and teach me love?
He treated me like any other
    He gave me his trust
    He called me brother
My life he claims for God above
    Can such things be?
For I had come to hate the world
This world that always hated me
Take an eye for an eye
    Turn your heart into stone
This is all I have lived for
This is all I have known
One word from him and I'd be back
Beneath the lash, upon the rack
Instead he offers me my freedom
I feel my shame inside me like a knife
He told me that I have a soul
    How does he know?
What spirit comes to move my life?
Is there another way to go?
I am reaching, but I fall
And the night is closing in
As I stare into the void
To the whirlpool of my sin
I'll escape now from that world
From the world of Jean Valjean

@@lee_1292 I think the singing is pretty good here, especially when he’s belting (considering his conditions especially). I guess you mean in the quieter parts where he’s crying it’s nasally and cracking, but like, for a movie I think that’s passable because that’s kinda the point. It wouldn’t really work in a stage production, but the ending is still powerful both vocally and acting wise imo

With the sound off, this looks amazingly acted. But without the video and just the sound, it's a bit painful for a long-time Les Mis fan to listen to. Thanks to Hooper's strategy Jackman is so worked up in the moment that his pitch keeps slipping and his throat tightens, and the beautiful music turns into a jumble.

The music conductor was Mackintosh's own music conductor for stage. Also, composers Schonberg and Boublil were present during the daily filming. The film adaptation is not meant to be a carbon copy of the stage musical as film is a different kind of medium.

Hugh Jackman and Russel Crowe, are so miscast.
They just don't have the voice ranges needed for the roles.
I am spoiled because I saw colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean and Alfie Boe, and Norm Lewis.
Eponiene is from the London cast. She was Eponiene when I saw the show the second time in London she and Aaron Tveit are the only two out of this entire movie who can actually sing.
If you compare this movie and all the attention and Oscar nominations it got.
To the Phantom of the Opera movie which has much more talented singers and how little attention that got.
It just shows what money does in Hollywood.
If you want to truly see a great performance of Les Missarables I would suggest buy the 25th anniversary version it's the entire show with the London cast and Lea Solonga guest stars as Fantine, you Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean and Norm Lewis as Javert.
It's a better internet than the movie you won't be disappointed.

    • @josefinabalatbat122
      @josefinabalatbat122 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The film adaptation is not meant to be a carbon copy of the stage musical ( which I have seen many times - Broadway/London/Paris/Asia) but has its own tale to tell. It emphasizes the dramatic elements of the storytelling and character development, where singing was simply complementing the acting choices! Jackman was nominated for an Oscar which means his performance has passed muster in all aspects. If you have read the unedited version of Victor Hugo's novel, you would also be aware that there are many key passages in the book ( such as the 2nd epiphany of Valjean/ the escape to the convent/the full tale of Fantine/the doubts of Javert/the rich background of Marius/ the jealousy of Valjean over Marius's taking away his daughter, etc) which were not covered in the stage musical. Also, Valjean's Soliloquy was the dramatic highlight, meant to show the epiphany of redemption, which was breezed through in the stage version. If you are talking original, the most original is the stage version in Paris in 1980, preceding the English version by 5 years. In that original version, Valjean was a baritone role and sung by a French baritone ( which would be a more realistic portrayal of a rough convict - can you imagine a hardened convict singing unrealistically like an opera tenor?). Also, the song of Fantine (L'Air de la Misere) from the original became Eponine's On My Own. Also in the film, it made more sense for Fantine to be there when Valjean was dying because of the attachment to Cosette ( while Eponine had nothing to do with Valjean). So changes should be looked at not to compare unfavorably but to see how it has improved as it went further along. Also, film is a totally different medium compared to stage and portrayals may differ (singing full blast to a camera may be a bit off-putting).

The song is perfectly fine (and one of the best ones in this musical) but not the way it's directed here. You can barely tell what he's singing and the music is all out of time and drags/rushes frequently. The instrumentation is also lacking in a lot of bite.
I don't necessarily blame Jackman, but the director definitely didn't know what he was doing.

yes but dont you think thats looking at a movie expecting it to sound better than the stage production? when you go se it live its about the voice. becuase most people cant see the actors face. when your talking about a movie it becomes less about prioritising perfect text booking singing. and prioritising an emotionally moving performance. becuase to me. all of those things you listed as negatives are the strengths of this particular performance.
