I doubt there was any evil intent behind the performance. I'm pretty sure that a Nigerian Valjean would have been perfectly welcome.
As for the gender thing, Valjean IS male in the play. You could change the script, like performing Hamlet with all-female roles, but then you would have a new piece of art, not the original.
I agree that the message in the song is universal -a call for people to overcome persecution and adversity.

    *Philip Quast* (1957-), Dream Cast
He is a well-established Australian theatre actor, with a dozen or so on-screen roles, most of which were on TV. He first rose to fame at the age of 30 when he played Javert in the original Australian Les Mis. It was that initial performance that got him into the Dream Cast in 1995.
    *Phil Cavill* (?), UK
Well, it is hard to find anything about him, but from what I can tell he’s doing fine. I found a video of him singing Bring Me Home with other singers, including Jeff Leyton that was recorded in 2020.
    *Robert Marien* (1955-), France
He is actually Canadian, but played in the original French-Canadian show of the play and then was invited to reprise his role in Paris as well. Since 1999, he has been mostly playing a part in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame on world tours. The last of which started during the outbreak of the virus.
    *Jerzy Leszke* (1958-), Germany
He’s a very successful Polish theatre actor, in Poland, Austria and Germany alike, but had performances in other European countries as well. He got the role in the first German Les Mis production in 1995. In the 2010s he was continuously playing a part in Dance of the Vampires. However, he is not doing so well nowadays, since in 2020 he was convicted and jailed for rape.
    *Takeshi Kaga* (1950-), Japan
Another well-established theatre actor, but he is also known for his portrayal of the Iron Chef and his roles in the Death Note movie series.
    *Gyula Vikidál* (1948-), Hungary
He’s from my home country, a very successful rock singer who rose to fame in the ‘70s during the Communist era as member of the P. Mobil. He then played in numerous other bands and from the late ‘80s started his stage works in rock musicals, such as István, a király. In recent years, though his iconic position isn’t shaken, he has mostly lost his singing voice, which he gave to rock and roll.
    *Tommy Körberg* (1948-), Sweden
He’s another mainly singer. He competed in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1969 and 1988. Körberg also played a famous role in the Swedish adaptation of Chess as well as sang in the Swedish dub of Beauty and the Beast. More recently, he sang the song “For Every Step” with the metalcore band Dead by April. That’s actually quite good.
    *Krzysztof Stasierowski* (1950-), Poland
Another singer that is hard to find, but he has been playing roles on many Polish TV shows, most recently in 2020.
    *Henk Poort* (1956-), The Netherlands
Mainly an opera singer, interestingly enough he also dubbed for the Beauty and the Beast. You can find many clips of him singin on Dutch events. Most recently he gained attention when sang Nightwish’s The Phantom of the Opera with their singer in 2019. Once again, it is quite good a song with his singing skills and I recommend checking it out.
    *Michael Burgess* (1945 - 2015), Canada
Another Canadian, but he was involved in the English versions. He was frequently associated with the Canadian anthem as he sang it numerous times over the years. He unfortunately died at the age of 70. ☹
    *Reinhard Brussmann* (1957-), Austria
He’s not the first on the list who first rose to fame by playing in the Les Miserables. He got the part in 1989, the following year he was chosen as the actor of the year in Austria. The most recent work of his I could find was in 2018, in the musical The Pope.
    *Rob Guest* (1950-2008), Australia
Another unfortunate loss on the list as he died at the age of 58. Ironically, he and Burgess are my favourites in this song. ☹ He was born in England and grew up in Canada and New-Zealand, but settled down in Australia. He was known for his roles in the Phantom of the Opera in which he even set a record of 2.289 performances over the scope of seven years. In his later years that came to soon, he continued to perform in many theatre roles and had the good fortune of establishing himself as a regular gala host of televised shows. After his death a fund was established in his honour to help upcoming musical performers.
    *Øystein Wiik* (1956-), Norway
He was working as a theatre actor from the age of 24, but gained fame in 1988 as Jean Valjean. So much so that in the following years he reprised to role in both Vienna and London. After 2000 he mostly wrote for musicals and then in the past decade has been writing novels.
    *Jan Ježek* (?), Czech Republic
He is also difficult to track down, but he is doing fine and from what I could tell is regarded as one of the most well-known theatre actors in the country.
    *Kurt Ravn* (1947-), Denmark
In 1995, he was already the eldest of the 17, but he’s still doing fine thankfully. He gained fame in the late ‘70s as an actor, appearing in the Danish TV series Matador. He’s been having success as an actor ever since.
    *Jeff Leyton* (?), Ireland
Another theatre actor and singer. He played on the West End many times and reprised his role as Valjean. He is quite active on social media (Instagram and Twitter) and also has a TH-cam channel, which I really recommend checking out. There he even has a full recording of Do You Hear the People Sing and a sing-off with Russel Crowe, both from 2020.
    *Egill Ólafsson* (1953-), Iceland
He is fairly successful in Iceland both on the stage and on screen. For the past few years, he seems to be have taken a break, but he did have a role on TV in 2021. He is also active on his Facebook page.
    *Craig Schulman* (?), USA
He has been playing in various theatre roles from the ‘80s throughout today, but other then that is hard to find. You can find an interview with him from 2018, but even that is not much.
    As of May, 2021.
