      could someone skip the triple glaze and polishing from part 1 if you do both parts to your guitar?

    • @GuitarYourself1
      @GuitarYourself1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome Job! Quick question, can you skip the polishing and just level sand then go the the candy process and after that level sand and then polish?

      Hey @Iron Gordon i learned about a Denim compound cutting pad that can work out your 2k clear coat orange peel & imperfections without sanding, then move on to polishing,...& you know, careful on the edges.

      Always wear a condom so your fully protected.
      Leftover paint on your hands could still be toxic especially during palm polishing

    As an automotive painter, for an even deeper shine you could spray 3-4 coats of clear then wet sand it with 1000 spray it again and you’ll get a very deep shine, also you should buy a heavier cutting compound such as Wizard Mystic Cut (i prefer it over others because it’s water base and doesn’t leave hard residue) and then meguiars #7 or either the meguiars you’re using it will most defiently improve your quality

    okay, I am going to help you out. the job is nice, but you have to admit, it could pop a little more instead of having a milky reflection of the lights. if you want to really have a mirror finish where you can read a newspaper in the reflection, you have to use different polishing technique. First, you have to use a rubbing compound to remove all of the scratches!!! Otherwise, you are just polishing the scratches; which is what happened here. After the compound follow up with polishing compound and finally with ultra fine polish. each time using different buffing pads made for each job. Never cross contaminate. I am not writing to criticize your work, I think it is fantastic. You just need to finish the job.
    I hope this helps, BTW, I have been doing this for 35 years, I know what I am talking about.
    oh, and yeah. I like how you emphasized safety, most people don't read the can..

      Anyone that's done any kind of post paint finishing work for the automotive industry knows that this guy is correct.

    • @JonnyBabyaka
      @JonnyBabyaka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That palm buffer isn’t anywhere near powerful enough to correct the wet sanding.
      Going to 3k then 5k and finally hitting it low speed with a foam pad and cutting compound then work your way back to polishes and a glaze with a DA will yield better results.
      That paint job is killer though!

      I liked it alot good job but he's right , when you learn to cut and buff with a automotive type setup it will take your art to the next level. I recommend practicing on your daily driver just to get a feel for it.

    PS, I love how people suggest an improvement, as if this isn't a video on how to do a quick and dirty rattle-can job. They all want to tell you how this could be improved, if you were to do a "Professional" "By the Book" "Top Notch" $2K paint job. That's NOT what this is. It's how to do a killer "At Home" job, with little-to-no "Special Tools". I just think that they should keep this in mind, prior to telling you how to do something completely different than what you have perfectly shown us. This is THEE BEST at home, cheap, totally "Work with what you've got", and be creative video that I have seen. So, again, thanks!

    • @IronGordon

      Sooo would it make sense to go buy 2k primer, candy base coat, candy top coat, and some clear for a small job, not to mention the compressor, spray guns, one for primer, then another for base and clear, and more!??..then what it takes to clean up after for just a guitar, that would be hard to tell the difference by an experienced painter!???......

    just wanted to express to the DIYer's of the group here.. When spraying with 2 part clear coat, you must be completely encapsulated! The "poison" seeks moisture. I.E. your eyes, mucous membrane, nasal passages, skin/swear glands, ect. FULL PPE!!! Proper airway protection, full face type (not half mask). AUTOMOTIVE painter suit, not Home Depot's cheap suits. Latex gloves and shoes (not sandals). OKAY, NOW GO PAINT!!!!!!

There are a lot of young kids in my hood that wanna paint their bicycles or skateboards kandy, but of course they don't have the resources to do that. Now, I can point them in the right direction. Simple instructions and humble materials; it's perfect for those of us who love this style but are tight on money. With all that's going on right now, people need something constructive to pass the time. God bless, and thank you for the inspiration!

    Hello; I just signed on my computer to drop you a comment and tell you how absolutely stunning your paint job on this guitar looks. I don't know how this video doesn't have 7 millions views instead. I need to repaint a vintage Japanese Les Paul I screwed up the paint on after having to move the bridge back with a neck replacement. I grew up with a dad who's a retired automotive paint & body man, so I kind of have an eye for what "perfection" looks like with people painting well... anything. These other "professional" guitar painters on TH-cam I watched, some of them just don't look good, despite having the right tools & methods for professional painting. I'm just absolutely blown away at how good your guitar looks for having used only spray cans. The first video I was really impressed with, but this one took it to a whole new level. Using that fabric to create that layered effect in the beginning, it looks like a guitar a see-thru burst effect without you having used traditional methods to accomplish it. And your attention to detail on the backside, something most people ignore, taping all those intricate patterns and shapes. It's just amazing. I can't say enough good about your quality of work and guitar from this video and your other one, and also thank you for sharing your techniques for this. I left a sub and I'm going to share this video on some guitar restoration boards, people need to see this!

    • @IronGordon
      @IronGordon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thank you so much for the glowing comment, I really appreciate it and the shares!
      People definitely tend to write off spray paint as something that is half ass. But with a little patience and practice
      Quality paint jobs can be produced.
      Good luck with your project, do you plan on striping it down?
      Thanks again man!

    Anyone have a idea what the matterial cost to do this project

    • @IronGordon
      @IronGordon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. It depends on what tools you are starting with and how complex you want to make your design. But using the guitar in the video as the example I did the metal flake paint on it for about $30. Now to do the candy paint job, like in this video, I used 2 color candy paints, which from the roth website I bought them from are $20 each and the 2k clear is about $20 a can as well.
      I used .25 and .125 tapes that are about $6ish a roll.
      sand paper price varies and then there is the polish
      I think if you had to start from nothing you could get it done for $150ish and then have left over sand paper, paint, and polish for your next project.
      I have most everything linked in the description of this video if you're interested.
      hope this helps!

    I build car and sci-fi models, for the car models I use 2K clears. This stuff is seriously toxic. I use the same respirator, but I don't use the same filters. for 2K I use the 3M 60923 p100 grade filters, I only use them for the 2K part, and I throw them away after about 2 builds. 2K clears contain isocyanate which can seep through skin, and can cause serious respiratory issues resulting in hospitalization or death with prolonged exposure. Affects can also be long term causing significantly decreased oxygen intake and asthma in people who never had it before. It's a great clear and cures super hard and will protect your paint job for a long time. Please take care of yourself using it.
    Great looking guitar.

      Isn't p100 a particle filter not a solvent filter?

    • @JHartModelworks
      @JHartModelworks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@janeblogs324 the P rating rates how much a filter blocks, not what it blocks. A P100 rating is the highest for personal respiratory protection. As long as your mask fits properly a P100 filter will block 99.9% of particles, while a P95 only filters 95%. Also there are n rated filters, P rated is resistant to oils while N rated filters are not.
      the standard filter for that mask is a 6001 which filters out only organic vapors and only at P95 level. the 60923 filters Organic Vapors, Chlorine,
      Hydrogen Chloride, and Sulfur Dioxide or
      Hydrogen Sulfide or Hydrogen Fluoride and
      Particulates at P100 which is the highest saftey level. It is also the filter 3M's support line recommends for 2K clears without moving to air fed filter system.

    Just a FYI
    Red scotch brite is equivalent to 400grt
    After activating your clear coat, if you want to get a bit more time out of it before it hardens in the can, lets say for another small project, through the can in your refrigerator till your ready to use it. It wont last weeks, but it will extend what they call the "pot life"
    Cheers

    I actually do have one question if you do not mind answering. I am using a vinyl decal on the headstock with a metal flake paint job on a guitar as you did on part 1 of this series. Since I am painting the body and the headstock the metal flake effect and since you said the glitter paint is bumpy before clear coat, would you suggest putting a light coat of the clear glaze first over the headstock and then the vinyl decal and then the rest of the clear coat? Or do you think just putting the vinyl decal directly on the glitter coat will not show up as bumpy looking underneath the vinyl and then clear coat finish as usual? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks man.

    How much would you charge to repaint a guitar. I have a 1989 HM strat. It’s black. I would like it pearl white.

    Wow! Despite my preference for thin nitro finishes.. this is amazing!
    I love Guadalupe too!
    I can’t imagine how thick the paint layer is at this point. It’s shocking to me that 10 minutes between coats is most of the time your waiting period.
    I’ll check out your channel more intentionally soon,.. but do you go into your filtration systems so it’s safe for you, the family and the neighbors? I am spraying nitro and keeping it safe for the neighbors is my biggest shop stress.

    whats your opinion. Im thinking about using a Chrome paint.. Getting a very accurate mirror finish. Then use metalcast Purple on top of that.. Think it will work>

    Is it necessary to bury the glitter/flake in clear, wet sand and scuff if you are going to do candy over? I’m thinking about a pretty simple candy flame, is that too hard to tape out if you don’t have a level surface? (Since it’s all getting final clear and wet sanding)
    Also, do you recommend any cheaper rustoleum style candy/transparent that’s in the budget of the first video?

    I have a question, Why did you sand the clear off, and then add the polish? Wouldn't it be better not to have all those scratch marks on the clear, before polishing it. If it was smooth clear and then you added the polish without sanding, wouldn't that be better and have no scratch marks from the sanding?

    Fantastic paint job. Good deal on the automotive paint safety too. Dude down below mentioned how to fine tune your polishing. This is a kit I used with my cordless drill on guitars. The pads are small and perfect for guitars. images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61lT4EBjjAL._AC_SX466_.jpg

    after you use the light tack adhesive to hold your lace in place, is it safe to assume that you used either rubbing alcohol or a wax and grease remover to clean that off before spraying the additional layers and the clear coat on top? how long did you wait before wiping it with alcohol or cleaner? 10 minutes :-)?

    That clear 2k is the best you can get in a can besides mixing yoursekf and pressurizing, which is really what id go with when using that if is going to be handled a lot or out in the weather a lot.. it will fade and wear away.. i used it on my truck and actually put on about 10 coats with it over a gloss black single stage and cut n buffed with same stuff actually.. at first it looked amazing, matched the factory deep black perfectly and thats hard to do if you know paint.. but after about a year the clear started doing that thing you see hoods do where it looks like its got a rash.. i did wait thecrecommended time before buff and waxed it per instructions so had to be the clear delaminating.. and was garage kept most of that year also.. no
    excessive washing, dunno, but it did hmm

    If that paint is that dangerous, should it even be used on something that is constantly being touched? When used on cars (for which it is designed), the paint is always outside where you aren't in contact with it.

    Loving your work but you are killing me the way you keep laying the guitar on the work table without any neck support. Gibson guitars are notorious for headstock snaps.
    There are tons of products on the market but you seem pretty handy and can make a custom one or at least, please put anything under the neck so the headstock doesn’t touch. It would be a real shame to have a beautiful piece of headless art!
