Should tape up the back vent too, gotta be extremely careful when painting helmets because the solvents in the paint can ruin the integrity of the helmet causing it to fail during a crash and not protect the rider. Very cool paint job and excellent work!
Only becomes a problem if the paint directly comes in contact with the raw lid itself, which is why I didn't strip the factory paint job, just scuff. I'm not an expert, you should always do your own research and only do what you feel safe with. Thanks
It's the fumes and overspray from the solvent paints that cause the issue, not just the paint itself. The OEM's use a solvent based paint on the shell of the helmet which is fine, but if the foam gets degraded from the fumes the helmet will look fine when it has actually been compromised.
I'll add, OEM's paint their helmets before the protective foam is assembled into the helmet. You can paint directly on the helmet, that's how a oem will apply paint.
Good stuff! I also am very careful about the type of paint I use on helmets, esp polycarb ones. I use a water-based primer after the sanding part and then use water-based airbrush paints for design- and end with the same 2K Spray Max that you used. You make it look so easy though..takes me much much longer with prep and even thinking of the design. I have never used lettering paint and recently I have seen many folks, including you, use it. Next project- lettering paint! :D Thanks again for the video!
I hope it works for you. The primer just adds an extra layer so just need to be cognizant of that. But yes, I think it should ease up people's concerns- I have done it for the last 8 years and none of the helmets have melted yet lol.
This is awesome, you have my instant subscription! I love to watch how people create painting helmets, I saw few in the past, and I have to say, I love your painting technique, it's juicy, I mean you can watch it and you can touch it, paint structure is thick, and this is great!
WOW MY MIND IS BLOWN!! Thanks for sharing your creative processes for this incredible piece. I loved watching as it worked and you have some real talent that was impressive even before you were completed. I was wondering if you have ever tried laying down a couple coats of clear and then wet sanding once its mostly cured, then adding layers, sanding etc etc? The reason I was curious, is because I've had some painted and decaled helmets that seemed to scuff or flake prematurely since the clear coat was thinner. When I watched automotive shops creating really long lasting paint jobs they have wet sanded between coats. Keep up the awesome content and I hope you stay healthy and happy in your future endeavors.
Dude this came out absolutely amazing. You have serious skill! You could definitely make a bunch of these for clients who want designs and make a profit! Your helmet design beats any I have seen by the big manufacturers! Keep up the great work.
Very creative and well done. Unfamiliar with 1 shot paint. Because it was brushed on I suppose it is in a can but wondering if it is an enamel or acrylic.
Pretty sure paint solvent can damage the structural integrity of the helmet. Might be something to check into before anyone's brains end up on a highway.

It brought back the memory when I seen this video. When I was taught not to paint them... We had a guy that was going to paint his helmet. The instructor seen him about to paint it, and rushed over and said very sternly not to do that because it can weaken the helmet. Maybe a week later the guy laid his bike down, bounced his helmet off the ground, got tons of road rash on his forearms and legs, but nothing deadly. The helmet took the damage and not his head. Probably saved his life or at least saved him from brain damage. It was lucky the teacher was paying attention that day.

Mr. Iron Gordon, I am in the process of painting one of my existing helmets but based on my research, I see a lot of warnings against using most any spray paints for their possible damage to the helmet's outer layer. Were the Rustoleum paints you used not damaging? Thank you.
I researched it out as well because I heard the same warnings. But all those warnings weren't backed by any kind of data or research, so it may be a lot of perpetuated bias toward the concept of spray painting a helmet. Polycarbonate doesn't respond well to Acetone, which is used in spray paint as a carrier for pigment. However if the helmet is painted from the factory and your spray paint never touches the polycarbonate then I am unsure of why there would be an issue. Also the spray paint should never touch the foam liner. But I'm not claiming this is safe, I don't know if its safe, I am not a scientist HA! Paint within your comfort zone
