I'm looking to coat an electric guitar that was factory finished in satin. Do you recommend sanding the satin first before applying the poly, and if so, what grit would you use?
+Brad Angove can I spray white poly as a solid finish? Going for a solid white color, but don't want to use nitro. Is poly equally toxic & flammable? Do you need a primer when spraying poly?
Basically I'm trying to do a solid white, but want to avoid spraying anything toxic/flammable. Oil finishes & dyes would be transparent and show the grain, so those won't work. Any suggestions for what I should do?
@@BradAngove ok cool thanks. Can you spray it? I'm thinking of just wiping it on but i don't want brush marks. Also, will a wipe on satin poly work over a minwax stain? that one's for a different build- for that one i'm using minwax black and want a satin that won't get too glossy
I just used it on my goalie mask!!! 3.5 coats!! Currently looks just like what my pro auto body shop does...we will see tomorrow after it’s done curing I guess...

That's fantastic! I'm glad to hear that it turned out well. If you're happy with how it looks, there's no need to sand and polish it. The polishing process doesn't help durability or anything. It's only real purpose is to remove imperfections, flatten the surface, and give you a nice even gloss.
Great and useful information, how much time you have to wait to mount the neck and harware on the guitar? I just refinished a headstock with acrylic clearcoat and dont want to leave nail marksl or fingerprints
Brad Angove I did this in a very dry evironment and a hot place by the way, it is close to the beach but done in a closed room at environment temperature 25-30 C. 6 weeks looks a bit longer but not a problem to wait.
Can this be used over angelus leather dye? I'm about to go in on a trans purple dye finish and am wanting to use something like this is that is faster and easier than other clears.
@@BradAngove Awesome, thank you! I am between this and tung oil right now but I really would prefer a more glossy finish for this build. I might just go this route, as it seems super quick.
For the respirator i recently bought a regular 3M one that takes cartridges. The cartridges I bought are Organic Vapor/Acid Gas ones. More specifically it's the 3M™ Organic Vapor/Acid Gas Cartridge/Filter 60923. Will this work in protecting me?
Excellent vid (and series) that I've only just discovered. I'm getting ready to clear coat my Frankie with the same spray, and wondered how this held up for you if you've still got that guitar. Was there any yellowing over time? Thanks!
This stuff doesn’t yellow. I’ve repainted that guitar since then like I usually do, but I have others coated with that clear that haven’t changed at all.
Great info . I may have missed it , but what kind of paint did you use to do your base design with ? Was it the same brand or can "regular" ( eg . painters touch ) work for the base design ? Thanks man 👍🏼
Hello Brad and Happy Easter day ! Just sprayed one coat of Mohawk clear nitro on a Stratocaster neck , is two coats enough ? , also , how long do I need to wait before I can sand and buff ? Thanks for your awesome channel !
Hi Lou. It’s up to you how many coats you use, but it’s really easy to sand through 2 coats when you go to polish. Most people do more. With Mohawk you need to give it at least a week or two before sanding and polishing, but for most nitro a month is recommended.
The 2K is a polyurethane. If you sand it with 800 grit that’s usually to recoat. Otherwise start higher and go through the sanding and polishing process.
I apply them 10-15 minutes apart. I usually do 3-4 coats. If you need to do more for some reason, you should wait a 24 hours and then sand lightly with 800 grit before proceeding.
Thank you for this video! I am painting my Jackson Dinky with a blue-white crackle finish (Waiting in my garage to get dry) and already bought some 2k clear coat
I've had some pretty good success with Dupli-Color perfect match paint and clearcoat. I believe it's a lacquer based paint and clear coat.... the paint dries ridiculously fast and hard as does the clear coat... using this paint and clearcoat I have gone from start to finish in two days and have been very happy with the outcome
@@BradAngove my uncle had a hollowbody bass from the 60s that he handed down to me. It was missing many components but the body was intact.. I decided to turn it into a ES 335... if you're interested I'll upload some pictures as I'm very happy with how it turned out
I suppose it depends what you mean by work. If you’re doing an acrylic lacquer paint job then you can clear coat with acrylic lacquer. It won’t be the same as this of course, but it will work.
I sprayed my DIY guitar white and has been drying for a few days now, did I wait too long to clear coat it? should I do another coat and then use the clear coat 30 mins after? What would you recommend to get a glossy finish to it?
If you’re using this clear I’d just say make sure the white is fully dry and then sand lightly with 800 grit paper and clean it before spraying this stuff.
Hey Brad, sorry to say, but i sprayed a guitar with it (great result!) and use the rest, without any hope, on a headstock, seven days later! (Winter in Germany...) so - Great Product.
:-) not really, only cold weather here... No, there was a bit left in the can and i had to spray the headstock. I wanted to finish it with truOil but give the can a try, and it works fine! I use this stuff all the time and never thought this would be possible after more than 2 days....
Great work! Have you ever tried this over acrylic art paint? If so, how did it do? I'm worried it might react poorly or melt it. Also that it might not bond real well to the art paint since I can't scuff it or anything first.
I’ve used it acrylic airbrush paint before, but not other acrylic art paint. I think if you let it dry fully it will probably work, but it’ll be strong enough for an art piece for example. Not durable enough for something like a car.
@@BradAngove it's a cooler that has been branded with acrylic paint artwork over it's full surface. Being a cooler that will get used, I want a durable protection for it that will handle UV, water, getting handled and bumped around a bit....I have used the SprayMax 2k and was thinking I'd go that route, but was worried it's solvents might not play nice with the acrylic art paint.
@@BradAngove initially I was going to do epoxy but even the UV resistant epoxy when on a white background you can see it yellow fairly quickly when outside a lot....and this will be outside a lot and has white and other very light colors. So just decided I didn't want to risk the potential for it to yellow. Since you had good results with SprayMax over acrylic paint, I think I'll get some of that to test. I'm looking to coat an electric guitar that was factory finished in satin. Do you recommend sanding the satin first before applying the poly, and if so, what grit would you use?
Yes, sand it to help the new paint stick. I suggest 800 grit.
👍
Do you wet a dry sand your paint before clear coating? If so, how what grit do you start and finish with?
I dry sand with 800 grit before clear coating.
You can use poly, but it’s still quite toxic. You’re looking for a water-borne acrylic.
@@BradAngove ok cool thanks. Can you spray it? I'm thinking of just wiping it on but i don't want brush marks. Also, will a wipe on satin poly work over a minwax stain? that one's for a different build- for that one i'm using minwax black and want a satin that won't get too glossy
@@BradAngove can you wet sand water-based acrylic? what grit would you recommend, 1500-2000?
You can spray acrylic. And generally the wipe on poly works fine Over those stains.
I just used it on my goalie mask!!! 3.5 coats!! Currently looks just like what my pro auto body shop does...we will see tomorrow after it’s done curing I guess...
Well im surprised its far better than i expected thanks for sharing this video
Thanks for watching.
i just used the spray max 2k i t worked fantastic better than rustoleum . i put 4 coats on and i have almost no orange peel it looks like show room no dust or runs etc just smooth as glass , my question do i still need to sand and buff or can i leave it as is thanks from new orleans
That's fantastic! I'm glad to hear that it turned out well. If you're happy with how it looks, there's no need to sand and polish it. The polishing process doesn't help durability or anything. It's only real purpose is to remove imperfections, flatten the surface, and give you a nice even gloss.
Trying now, used your link, and appreciating your direct video style!
I hope it goes well for you.
Thank you! I just did a guitar in nitro and it came out spectacular but man did it take forever to do.
I’m glad it turned out well.
Thanks for the vid. How many coat you put on the guitar? and How many spray can u use ? Thanks
1 can. Usually 3-4 coats.
Can i stain the guitar and after its dry clear it with spray can?!
Yes
You may want to apply sealer before the clear though.
Hi brad did you make a video on sanding and polishing it,that’s my next job cheers
Hi Simon. I have quite a few videos on that, just not with this particular guitar.
Going to give spraying a bass a go. I’m by no means an artist but I hope I can lay down a decent coat of paint! Thanks for all the videos 👍👍
I hope it goes well for you. Thanks for watching.
Great and useful information, how much time you have to wait to mount the neck and harware on the guitar? I just refinished a headstock with acrylic clearcoat and dont want to leave nail marksl or fingerprints
Acrylic clear coat takes much longer than this stuff. I’d be comfortable working with this after a week. Acrylic can take up to 6.
Brad Angove I did this in a very dry evironment and a hot place by the way, it is close to the beach but done in a closed room at environment temperature 25-30 C. 6 weeks looks a bit longer but not a problem to wait.
Brad Angove and thanks a lot for the fast reply. I appreciate your help!
Can this be used over angelus leather dye? I'm about to go in on a trans purple dye finish and am wanting to use something like this is that is faster and easier than other clears.
Yes it can.
@@BradAngove Awesome, thank you! I am between this and tung oil right now but I really would prefer a more glossy finish for this build. I might just go this route, as it seems super quick.
It’s faster for sure
For the respirator i recently bought a regular 3M one that takes cartridges. The cartridges I bought are Organic Vapor/Acid Gas ones. More specifically it's the 3M™ Organic Vapor/Acid Gas Cartridge/Filter 60923. Will this work in protecting me?
I think that should be good for small batches of work.
@@BradAngove ok thank you!
@@BradAngove Cheers Brad. I appreciate the quick reply and thanks again for sharing your knowledge 👍
Great info . I may have missed it , but what kind of paint did you use to do your base design with ? Was it the same brand or can "regular" ( eg . painters touch ) work for the base design ? Thanks man 👍🏼
Yes the design was done with the painters touch.
Hello Brad and Happy Easter day ! Just sprayed one coat of Mohawk clear nitro on a Stratocaster neck , is two coats enough ? , also , how long
do I need to wait before I can sand and buff ? Thanks for your awesome channel !
Hi Lou. It’s up to you how many coats you use, but it’s really easy to sand through 2 coats when you go to polish. Most people do more.
With Mohawk you need to give it at least a week or two before sanding and polishing, but for most nitro a month is recommended.
@@BradAngove Thank you so much for your help , appreciate it
This is truly great advice and a game changer for me. It looks easy enough to do, even for me.
Is this poly spray coat great for protection against scuffs? Looking to cover my matte finish guitar to protect the quilted top
Yes, it’s pretty durable.
@@BradAngove hell yeah! thank you for these videos man!
@@BradAngove totally forgot to ask will this do well on a quilted satin finish ?! And will it need a later coat years down the road?
Quilted satin? Is it a quilted top with a satin finish on it? If so, what kind of finish?
@@BradAngove sorry, meant its a quilted maple top. Guitar site is showing it as a Satin Urethane finish
Awesome job. After you sand the 2k with 800 grit. Can you apply poly over it? Or just polish to a high shine?
The 2K is a polyurethane. If you sand it with 800 grit that’s usually to recoat. Otherwise start higher and go through the sanding and polishing process.
What kind of respirator do i need to use a Catalyzed Clear Coat? Thank you
+Greg Beck One with fume protection. You need the full filters on it; not just the dust protection.
Hey Brad - is it a necessary/recommended practice, to heat this can up like using spray-can lacquers?
It can help a bit with the accelerant. That’s all it does; just like with spray can lacquers.
@@BradAngove by that, do you mean that it will harden faster? (I apologize for my rookie-ness lol)
No, it will just expand the gas in the can so it sprays perhaps a touch better.
I noticed that you applied the third coat right after the second coat. Is that typical? Is three coats if urethane all that is needed?
I apply them 10-15 minutes apart. I usually do 3-4 coats. If you need to do more for some reason, you should wait a
24 hours and then sand lightly with 800 grit before proceeding.
How would I go about sanding between coats? Or is that something I should just not do?
If you're relying on chemical adhesion as per the manufacturer recommendations like this, you wouldn't sand between coats.
@@BradAngove ok thanks so much!
is this stuff ok to use on raw wood over a stain/dye?
Yes
Thank you for this video!
I am painting my Jackson Dinky with a blue-white crackle finish (Waiting in my garage to get dry) and already bought some 2k clear coat
Excellent. Let me know how it goes!
Brad Angove I recorded some steps of my repainting process, I hope I can make a good video out of it.
Right now it is still drying
Cool; I'm excited to see how it turns out.
It’s acrylic lacquer. Decent paint, but actually takes 6 weeks or so to reach full hardness.
@@BradAngove I get in the habit of rushing things so I will note that for sure...thank yoh
@@BradAngove my uncle had a hollowbody bass from the 60s that he handed down to me. It was missing many components but the body was intact.. I decided to turn it into a ES 335... if you're interested I'll upload some pictures as I'm very happy with how it turned out
I’m definitely interested!
@@BradAngove I'm having a hard time figuring out how to upload a picture here in the comments... might have FB it or something
would acrylic lacquer work for this?
I suppose it depends what you mean by work. If you’re doing an acrylic lacquer paint job then you can clear coat with acrylic lacquer. It won’t be the same as this of course, but it will work.
@@BradAngove Thanks, what grit should i sand the colored body before i spray it?
I would use 800 grit.
Brad Angove Thanks a lot man
I sprayed my DIY guitar white and has been drying for a few days now, did I wait too long to clear coat it? should I do another coat and then use the clear coat 30 mins after? What would you recommend to get a glossy finish to it?
If you’re using this clear I’d just say make sure the white is fully dry and then sand lightly with 800 grit paper and clean it before spraying this stuff.
Do you need to polish after this? What about wet sanding in between coats?
It’s up to you whether you polish or not. I have a video on that and on sanding between coats. It depends on how long you wait between coats.
@@BradAngove I shook the can of 2k for 2min. Flipped it, popped the red cap, and then all the contents spewed out...what happened???
@user-jb3de9uk9p the contents spilled out the bottom? When you pulled the red cap off?
@@BradAngove yes
There was something wrong with your can then.
How long does this clear coat take to cure?
It can be polished after about 24 hours.
Hey Brad, sorry to say, but i sprayed a guitar with it (great result!) and use the rest, without any hope, on a headstock, seven days later! (Winter in Germany...) so - Great Product.
The can still worked for you 7 days later? Did you refrigerate it?
:-) not really, only cold weather here... No, there was a bit left in the can and i had to spray the headstock. I wanted to finish it with truOil but give the can a try, and it works fine! I use this stuff all the time and never thought this would be possible after more than 2 days....
Ah - and i put the can in "warm" water for a while before using it..
That’s great. I’m glad it worked for you.
Can you scuff and add additional coats of clear with other clear coat products as well, or is that specific to this kind of clear coat?
You can do that with almost all types of clear coat.
@@BradAngove thank you, sir. You've inspred me to try this out.
I think the spraymax 2K is about good an option as you’re going to find for that except perhaps epoxy.
I REALLY appreciate you sharing! Thank You!
Technical question.
Other then epoxy resin, what can you recommend as a wood bar top clear coat
How natural are you aiming for with the finish?
@@BradAngove the issue is that epoxy is expensive. Looking for alternatives that can be regularly cleaned and still hold up.
Good advice. Warm the can.
Do you use a sanding sealer before your light first lacquer coat? StewMac recommends it on their site. But not sure what it does and if it’s necessary.
The sanding sealer comes before the paint (color).
Can this be used over say a red stain? I am considering buying a Harley Benton SG Kit and want to stain it Red with a clear over it.
Yes
Okay so what about screw holes for pickguard, hardware, etc. I have a kit that's pre drilled. Do I toothpick the holes? Or is it safe to redrill later?
You likely won’t even need to re-drill. The paint won’t fill those completely.
Do you have a video on how you ended up polishing this?
I have several polishing videos. Not for this particular paint job though.
@@BradAngove if I were to get 8- 10 coats of clear, can I keep spraying this 2K clear one coat every hour or so?
No. Spraymax has instructions on the can. You would spray 3-4 coats 15 minutes apart, let dry for 24 hours, sand smooth with 800 grit, and repeat.
Just used it on my guitar - worked great! How long would you let this clear coat dry/harder before sanding/polishing?
24 hours
What paint did you use for the base coat as I don’t think you can spray 2k over acrylic paint? What is the best paint to use as a base coat it I want to 2k clear over the top? Thanks
You can definitely use 2k over acrylic. I used rustoleum painters touch as the base. It’s my series on Frankenstrat paint jobs.
