We're gradually making progress! Most of the spots we've been planting were previously under concrete (either the previous house's foundation or their old driveway) so the dirt was all super compacted. Digging it up and improving the soil was probably the most time consuming aspect of this. In retrospect, maybe we should've tried to find some machinery we could rent, lol.
We've been kind of winging it with the design and will change things around a bit as we move on, but things are gradually coming together. Our next step will be to add a walkway, but now that we've reached the humid part of Japanese summer we might have to wait until fall for the heavy work. Plenty of weeding to do in the meantime, lol.

Our yard after 6 months of work! Well, let's be honest, 6 months of Jun doing most of the work. We've been kind of winging it with the layout but it's starting to come together. Next plan is to adjust the shape of the flower beds a bit and then put in (probably a brick) walkway in between them. The vegetable garden we're planning to put behind the BBQ pit (which I'd also like to remake a bit, maybe with like a brick wall so we can use the half-burned pointy stick wood as benches). But that might have to wait until fall. We've finally entered rainy season and it's also starting to get humid, so we're going to switch a bit more to work inside the house for now!
Great work on the garden! I love how you guys don't try to make some sterile garden, but go more with the flow of nature🥰 Also, I'm so excited to see more of the interior of the house and your projects!

Wish you included some wide panning shots of the garden that included the exterior of the house so we could get a sense of the scale and how everything is integrated.
Quick tip digging a square hole for trees helps the roots grow faster because the push into the corners.

it was probably confused but they're very chill lizards in general.
Reminded me of a lizard that came into our house. Poor thing must have been so confused and lost. We took the little cutie back outside near some grass and there was a rock that provided some shelter for it. lol I hope that little lizard is okay or lived a good life after that.
They look somewhat similar to our little gecko's here in Perth, Western Australia. 😍

Fun fact about pink/blue hydrangeas: they are the same plant. You can turn a blue hydrangea pink and you can turn a pink hydrangea blue if you make adjustments to the soil. Adding or removing certain minerals to the soil will allow you to change the color of the flowers by affecting the soil PH and the rate at which the hydrangea absorbs aluminum.
Pink flowers = low aluminum absorption rate, high PH (alkaline soil).
Blue flowers = high aluminum absorption rate, low PH (acidic soil).
Nurseries and garden centers simply grow them separately and then sell them as whatever flower color they end up.
Hydrangeas are also fairly easy to propagate through cuttings, so if you clip a cutting from new flower-less growth, you can root it in a humid environment and then plant it somewhere else in your garden so that you can have a baby hydrangea bush next season.
Finally, there is another version of hydrangeas called panicle hydrangeas (hydrangea paniculata). They form large white cone-shaped flower heads and they can be pruned into a tree form. They are very hardy, don't require any watering, and you can control the size of their flower heads by pruning them in the spring. More aggressive pruning means fewer flower-heads which means larger individual flower-heads. Less pruning means more flower-heads which means smaller flower-head sizes.
If you google "Limelight Hydrangea", you'll see what I'm talking about.
They are breathtaking.

One of my friends (we are American) replanted her yard and filled it with native flowering plants, removed invasive plants (including invasive grasses), encourages leaf litter and branches in the fall- and in turn has had an abundance of wildlife return to her yard- both big and small- noted by the greater diversity of native pollinators and creatures she has been seeing in her yard!
If you've got a nice plethora of animals, then that means you've got something good going for the ecosystem! Can't wait to see what other creatures you find! :D

This video made me so happy! When you planted the little bushes and Jun said (what sounded to me like) "Orea" and Rachel replied "Orea", it reminded me of me and my greek fiancé. I'm Norwegian and moved to Greece to live with the love of my life. Learning the language and customs is a daily "struggle" (a good one), and it warms my heart when I hear you guys learn from each other. "Orea" in Greek means good, and it is one of the first words I learned and used when communicating with my fiancés mother :)

The process for planting that really tall tree, needing 4 different guys, and a robot with tank treads to move it in was so interesting to watch! Thank you for showing us the garden that is very well manicured, AND the garden that is not! And all the little animals!!! I love seeing the frogs and lizards!
You should make a few butterfly water dishes! You take a shallow ceramic dish for under your flower pots and fill it with sand and small gravel. Then add some larger stones and maybe some colored glass cabochons for decoration and fill it with water to just the top of the sand. Put it on a little stand in between some flowers and they’ll land on the larger stones and drink water from the wet sand! My best friend is an entomologist and did that to our yard and we have tons just drinking and enjoying the sun!
I love how you showed a mixture of how you replanted yourself, got help from friends, and had a crane involved. Redesigning my garden has been so intimidating. Y’all have given me the courage to design a native garden. I really want to pull out the invasive things and create a tiny wildlife sanctuary in my yard since everything is so “cookie cutter” in my neighborhood.

Trees are supposed to be planted at the flare (the base of the trunk starts to curve outwards from the straight part of the trunk) a lot of landscapers will often plant incorrectly (leaving the burlap and especially a cage is a big no-no, especially for younger trees) hopefully they are not planted too deep because it can kill a perfectly healthy tree years later. (I have worked/work in tree planting for years and know a number of certified arborists in my trade) This causes the roots to "girdle" which is where they wrap around the tree and eventually kill it (which is why we inspect the tree roots outside of the burlap to make sure this does not happen)
Since it was already done by a crew with machines I would say it would be a good idea to inspect the depth of the trees already planted (after looking up what the flare looks like) and make sure to never "volcano" berm the trees (putting mulch all the way up the trunk in a volcano shape) make sure nothing is around 3 inches around the trunk. (except the bug preventative which likely should be taken off in winter to avoid trunk rot from moisture being held on the bark) Also, look for roots not going straight out and "girdling" the tree at the base which is caused by incorrect planting depth. 90 degrees or other angles the roots start to take should be pruned...sparingly as it can be detrimental if 15% or more of the living tree mass is taken at once. I don't know what japan has in the way of arborists but I am sure there are some in the area and it is best to look for one for planting and especially structural pruning which is likely needed for many of the smaller blossoming tree types.
Sorry for the novel but I am a long-time fan and wanna make sure you and jun have a healthy and happy yard for the long term!

We were taught in horticulture to never leave any part of the saplings original pot (burlap, mesh) when repotting. Also shaking out the old soil and checking for matted roots. Helps promote growth and avoid rootbounding.

@@ladycavalier Yeah a lot of people don't! It's funny since people complain about "bad" trees (ready to break,branches/structure all wrong, overgrown roots) but they had no potential to grow well since you/someone planted them wrong silly! haha
Hopefully this comment helps people make sure their trees are happy and healthy their whole lives instead of getting cut short from plantings! :(
I would say volcano mulch (mulch going in a huge pile against the tree) to be the most common and most deadly for the trees mistake! Say no to volcano mulch! 🌳🌲
@@kittycat5585 loool I definitely know what you mean, like all the time I'll see people plant oakb trees along the side of the road under power lines, or like in one big cluster of three or four, or in the tiny grass space between the road and the sidewalk 😂 like come you GOT to know that's an actual oak tree and not a bush right (altho that might just be bad landscapers vs ppl not knowing about trees)
But it's sad to see things like people trying to plant cherry trees where I live and they always end up just slowly getting sicker and sicker and dying off. Still haven't seen one that ever got very big

Pretty tree choices, you may want to look up cardboard method to start new flower bed. It is used to prevent weeds. Think a wild flower meadow is great idea

A good suggestion to keep weeds at bay in new flowerbeds is to use old cardboard boxes (brown corrugated cardboard only, all tape removed) to cover the exposed soil before you put down mulch. The cardboard will smother the seeds, helps the soil retain moisture, and will break down in only a few months in your moist climate. Plus, it’s free!

I live in Dallas, Texas, really looking forward to getting a place where I can have a garden. In the meantime, I am growing herbs on my balcony to learn which ones grow well in this climate and which ones struggle. I can say, basil, tomatoes, rosemary, chilis, tarragon, and mint all do amazing here. Cilantro, thyme, zinnias and violets really struggle to survive the heat and the bugs.
Zinnias work well in a sheltered area. I lived in Fort Worth and put seeds in a "shaded" patio planter (got sun in the latter half of the morning - post 4pm). They thrived.
Thyme can't get rain on the plant. It stirs up the native mold in the soil and the plant dies from the bottom up (I learned this from an professional herb grower). Either pot it and water it from the bottom or plant it under a tree/cover to shade the plant from the rain/sprinkler system.
Violets like rocky areas where the moisture gathers in pockets (I have a concrete back yard (lots of old cracked pavement)) and planted it in mulched pots thinking the good rich soil would help it flourish and it seeded and thrives in the cracks of the concrete. Years later it's still sprouting up there even though I "regularly" pull the seedlings out of the cracks.

I really love your garden R&J! I feel like giving the hydrangea bush a hug!! Here in Singapore, it's so hot that we couldn't grow cold climate plants like hydrangea, momiji and flowering plum trees. Hope to visit Japan next time to see those wonderful trees and plants!

The sack around the roots is made of burlap(?) and will dissolve within a few months!
I was wondering as well. Our red maple wasn't unwraped or scored. 15years later it grew about 1in. It was looking unhealthy so we removed it and the roots were still balled up.

The ties are also natural rope and biodegradable. The soil shown in most of this video is awful because it was under the previous house's foundation, so it's compacted and "dead". But the soil in the rest of the yard is amazing. We're trying to revitalize this "dead" soil by digging it up, removing the concrete and things mixed in it and mixing it with healthy soil from the rest of our yard as well as humus and whatnot. Once we finish it'll be soft enough for the worms and fungi and roots to start running through it and converting it back into healthy soil.
