Buying fully grown trees in Japan

  • We've been doing a TON of work on our yard and one of the most fun parts of that has been buying trees! Turns out you can buy FULLY GROWN trees, some even two stories high, and have them delivered and planted for you. This is called Ueki Matsuri (Garden Plant aka Tree Festival), although it's more of a market than a festival. (Everything's called a festival here.) Tree farmers, landscapers, etc all bring out a bunch of their plants and set up shop for about a month. Kind of like a flea market for trees! A lot of these trees and plants are way cheaper than you find at garden centers or nurseries, often they're impeccable quality, and many of them you can't buy anywhere else. In the intro clips for this video we show a hainoki tree (Japanese sapphireberry) we bought at another tree market last month that's over 30 years old! (We'll show planting and everything later on!)

We're back!!! Now that it's getting warmer we're doing a ton of work on our yard, and the most fun part is buying big-ass trees! We recently went to our first ever tree festivals (more like tree markets) where you can buy extra special (mostly native Japanese) trees that aren't available anywhere else. We've also been filming our gardening work so we'll make a video about that later. :D
Everything has been amazing in our new house! Our cats love it, our neighbors are all still really nice, and we adore having a garden and yard beyond words. It's so beautifully quiet here, and there's a ton of wildlife. It's been really important to me to grow a lot of native plants and things that are beneficial to the ecosystem so we can live comfortably alongside all the bugs, birds, lizards, etc. We've done a lot of improving the soil and planting so far but we've still only made a moderate amount of progress. Digging holes gets real tiring, real fast! Side note, but there's also something in our yard that's been giving me itchy rashes (like poison ivy) and I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS so uhh, we might have to do some experimenting later on to figure that out. Turns out the list of plants that could potentially cause "irritation" is incredibly long, and our yard is big and there is a ton of stuff out there. Can't wait to show you guys how it's going!

Yay, happy to see another video from you guys! Great to hear that you're enjoying the house, as are the cats :) And hopefully your planting video can give some closure on what's causing the rashes if someone in the comments knows...sorry that's happening to you.
BAMF Award goes to the sweet man who let you guys adopt two more plants for your garden 🥰

This is so interesting and such a stark contrast to the mass-‘produced’ plants at garden centres that don’t get a lot of love… watching this you really get the feeling of pride ans care the growers put into the plants and trees they offer.

    • @RachelandJunAdventures
      @RachelandJunAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +618

A lot of these trees have been really beautifully grown. And not only shaped well, but they're often hardier and higher quality sources. The vendors have all been incredibly kind, too. They all gave us discounts, sometimes extra plants, and offered care advice on other trees we have growing in our yard. There are apparently some specific techniques you should use when planting trees that we never would have known about otherwise!
(For anyone curious--you water down the hole as you're filling it in around the root ball and shake the tree a bunch to make sure there aren't any air gaps. And you build up a little dirt wall around the tree so that when you water it the water remains directly over the root ball and trickles down instead of spreading out. Very helpful info!)

@@RachelandJunAdventures we saw you planting things in other videos and i wondered if you just didn't know that and had never planted anything before or if that was something unique to Japan and planting that didn't need all of that to make it grow. its good to know it was just you didn't know bcz i wondered how things were growing without you watering them and pulling apart the root ball so it had a better chance to get to the water.

Pro tip on crab apples, we have them here in the US (I'm sure Rachel has seen them everywhere) and they are actually an invasive species now. The birds eat their fruit and poop them EVERYWHERE. They grow quickly but aren't very structurally sound and tend to have branches break off or they fall over in strong winds/snow/ice/storms, etc.
The rest of the trees are AWESOME! We actually have a weeping cherry and several Japanese maples here and they're so lovely, I love to see them every year! 😍
Excited to see things shape up at your house!

As a fellow plant lover this looked so fun! Japan has so many beautiful native trees, especially flowering trees. I recently saw weeping Japanese plum trees for the first time and absolutely loved them!
It was nice to hear you two speaking Japanese to each other in a video for a change. I’m a bit of language nerd so I love hearing other languages even if I can’t understand them. 😅

we grow strawberry begonias as house plants here in Canada :).
I work in a garden center here, I find it interesting that, at the beginning of the season, they can have cheap trees like this. Normally here, trees go on sale in late summer or early fall. If anything, trees would be more expensive in Spring here since the demand is high and you still have the whole season ahead of you to sell them. We want to get rid of trees and plants in the Fall so they can shut down the garden centers without having to take care of the trees all Winter. You can still plant trees in the Fall. Actually, some people find it preferable, since we have so much drought now in summer, it's better for the trees to get established over Fall, Winter, and Spring, before going into a hot and dry Summer (even when you water). Wow, free tree delivery! No, we charge 100$ (100$ whether it's one tree, or a truck and trailer full of plants and trees). The insurance on having two workers out driving and lifting trees often over 100lbs is insane. Plus the price of gas is insane now. But, then again, most people here have large SUVs and trucks and friends and family come and help them, so it's not a problem. We deliver maybe one tree a week, sometimes less, so delivery not a popular option.

I have bought my parents a Star Magnolia and a traditional Magnolia for their home in Ontario, Canada. They are gorgeous and bring my mom so much pleasure in the spring when they bloom. It is the one gift I am thanked for every year afterwards and knowing it makes them smile makes it a pleasure for me also.

I'm really interested to see how a japanese garden would be tended to compared to europe/america. i imagine everything grows a lot faster with all the rain. am definitely looking forward to more garden videos :)
