We went with Sharla and Chris to the Fox Village at Mt. Zao!! It was the most incredible place I've been in my life! I highly, highly recommend this for anyone visiting Japan. However, getting there is a bit tricky! You either need to drive a car, take an expensive taxi, or catch a questionable ride on a city bus in a city southwest of Sendai called Shiroishi. The details are on the website (in Japanese). The bus costs 200 yen and doesn't actually stop at Fox Village, so apparently you need to tell the driver to stop there AND pick you up again on the way back, lol. Good luck adventuring?!

Hi Rachel, I recently watched a video clip on Unilad about how the foxes here were not really being properly taken care of and seem to live in cramp and crowded conditions with some of the foxes even showing signs of stress and injury from fighting. The clip was from 2019. I know it's been a long time since you've been but I was just wondering what you thought of the place and how it was operating when you went and how the foxes conditions were??
I don´t know if it´s just me but even in thi video the furr on some foxes doesn´t look that good to me =/ the video you are talking about was made by a guy with blonde hair? if it is I saw it too and it was hell T_T >:( the poor animals having injuries and are stressed out to the max....if they happened to have taken good care of the foxes before, I wonder what happened for it to get this bad now :°(
also it seems like here there are no signs regarding the warning that one might get bitten by the foxes...they are jus walking besides them and even letting them get very near and the foxes don´t seem that stressed yet
@@Lepidolith I’m surprised that that many live together and in such a small area for the numbers because a lot of times not many can and then it’s only certain ones together based on dominance/submissiveness/hierarchy. This can apply to both males and females. So I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a lot of fights.
The fact that they breed them and keep so many together just for entertainment purposes is a big no no to me :/ Would have been better if it was a rescue and rehabilitation center...
I went there and I can confirm that this is not a natural reserve for the foxes but rather a cage for them. They are all cramped together, some even caged in small boxes only to entertain visitors. I wish they could stop glamorizing such a place

This place looks so fun, so that's why it's so sad when you learn the truth that the foxes are kept in horrible conditions, many starving and sick because of how much they fight for space and food. Foxes are not meant to be so crowded. If you still want to see foxes in happy and healthy conditions, please do research on wildlife rescues that care for foxes!
I hope everyone should see this and avoid this tourist trap.

Have you seen a current video from the fox village? It seems that they are not caring for all of the animals anymore. There’s a video going around of someone showing how malnourished and anxious they are and underfed it’s really bad.
It may sound adorable in broad daylight when you are there with them and can pet them. But imagine living right by a woods and you go out to do something for a quick minute and its around 11pm and you hear this sound that you're not familiar with and it actually screams like it's flying hard right at you. But you don't actually see anything...
I could have sworn that thing was trying to eat me! xD so I ran inside and then I googled it and read that foxes like to scream like that at night to attract a mate. So glad it was just a fox sound. (I live in north Florida and the main animals in our woods is small-ish like raccoons and possums and foxes and owls.
It nearly gave me a heart attack lol

And within the confines of the law, it's different enough that tame animals are not past the line of legality.

I never knew foxes could be so cute and tame. In London theyre usually skinny, scruffy and scavengers. They also cause terror at night when they fight its like babies screaming.

foxes are only opportunistic scavengers. Humans throw away a lot of food so they get a lot of free meals. But in the wild, they are usually solitary hunters, and get most of their food from hunting small rodents and birds.
I remember when I was little the fighting sound terrified me in the middle of the night. I was so scared I had to sleep with my sister to calm down.
All animals can be like once domesticated but that doesn’t mean they should be.
Day 36... They've accepted me as one of their own, the sanctuary keeper s have not noticed that I've been lurking upon them. They bring me food and as well as items they've stolen from guests. IDK THAT JUST POPPED INTO MY HEAD WHEN I WAS WATCHING THIS!
