Hey guys!! We're so excited to start getting to work on our yard! This is seriously only the tip of the iceberg with our neighbors so far--they have been SO NICE and the neighborhood really seems like a fantastic place! We are so grateful we were able to buy this property. Thank you all so much for supporting us and helping us get here! We'll have many gardening and house videos coming!

I loved this about rachel but kinda hated it too. See growing up my dad was a logger he owned his own company. Logging doesn't have to be evil the way most people see it. What my dad did was called select cut logging. He would only take very mature trees or trees that could cause problems. That way there was room for fresh growth and also left trees for the next generation. Clear cutting is where a company comes in and strips all trees down no matter the size. That makes me mad. But I'm totally fine with select cut logging. Besides the roads that are made which will eventually grow back over you can't tell my dad was even there. I spent many of a summer and weekend in the log woods and sawmill.

To be honest, I feel like both opinions are sort of correct. I've lived here for 6 years now, and frankly never want to leave. My (also foreign) husband and I have a son now, and he's happy and adored by our neighbours and the nearby community. The feeling of warmth and community here is INCREDIBLE, both in the country and the city (especially Osaka).
There are also people for whom Japan is a bad fit. It's no one's fault. There are also Japanese people for whom Japan is a bad fit, and they end up living a much freer, happier life elsewhere in the world. For the people who don't fit well here, they'd certainly find Japanese people cold... if people don't have an affinity for you, they're not going to spend much time on you. That's true anywhere in the world, but for a society which is less diverse in attitudes than most, it means you'd have a hard time finding "your people" here and would be more likely to clash with neighbours or coworkers, whom you can't avoid.
To anyone reading this, my advice would be to TRY living in Japan, if you're interested... and, then, wait and see.

@hello hi What do you class as a 'real job'? Some TH-camrs spend 60+ hours a week researching, scripting, filming, editing and doing whatever it is that pertains to their channel be it cooking, repairing stuff, etc. And exactly how does being sponsored by anything make one a 'sellout'? Really, unless it was something they were violently opposed to but still accepted as a sponsor anyway, then what's the issue?

Sometimes it really takes a village. I live in a condo and my downstairs neighbour fell ill with covid; his wife and him have 4 school-age children and with online classes, child stuff and covid treatment, she started to get really stressed. Quite a lot of neighbours started to collect money to help them with the cost of medicine and oxigen and every day one of us would give them food for the day. Now the husband is progressively getting better but everyone is still looking after them. Love your neighbours, built a nurturing community.

A tip for the future, that I've done for my own plants that are in pots (because I didn't have time to figure out where to plant them before winter strikes) is to just find a spot in a garden bed (or ground where it won't get in the way), dig a whole, and plop the pot inside. Then come spring after the snow has melted, you lift the pot out of the hole and do what you will with it. That way the plant stays warm being in the ground, versus being exposed on all sides to the colder weather. Love these house update videos, I find the process so fascinating!

I would recommend storing it in a glass container.

I was always so in awe of the opening scene in Totoro, when the family is moving in and introducing themselves to all the neighbors, and all the neighbors being so friendly and helpful. Rachel and Jun are literally reliving that movie, I'm so jealous

Neighbors in more rural neighborhoods in Japan can be really chill and sweet. When I visited my grandma during the summer her neighbors would constantly come over to check up on her (grandpa was hospitalized then) and they’d bring so much vegetables. Unfortunately a lot of it ended up rotting since they’d bring too much for only me and my grandma to eat. But they were always willing to check in to see if my grandma was doing ok.

As someone who lives in Ireland, which is almost entirely countryside, it is strange to me that you guys have never had a garden, but I guess it would be strange to you guys for me to never have lived in a town/city! Anyway I am so happy for you and what you've achieved, love from Ireland/UK!

In America people make the distinction between an outdoor space on your land (a yard) and a place where you grow things specifically (a garden). So rachel has probably had a yard before but shes probably never planted her own plants and gardened. Most people in america have yards unless they live in apartments

Having nice neighbours is probably the best thing you can hope for when you move to a new place, and it seems the two of you just hit the jackpot. I can’t wait to see what your garden becomes over time...

Those plants need compost! Please start a compost. It’s so easy and it’s a good way to get rid of scraps. Also much cheaper than buying fertilizer or compost from the store.
    Here’s some info if interested:
Hot compost is a good option if you have a lot of weeds, dead leaves and food scraps. Better if you have a yard. This can be done in multiple batches to create different times for the compost to finish.
I live in an apartment and do worm compost. It’s done in bins and is really easy as well. The worms eat food scraps and some brown material and you can use their pop for compost. Good for small batches.

yes worm compost is amazing! if it has a good lid it won't smell and the soil they make is like magic for plants!
