I've heard a number of times before that Japanese flea markets aren't really flea markets, but the website for this one was so insistent that it was old, used stuff (all of the photos were old things, like laid out on blankets on the ground!) so I was really hopeful, but it turned out even this wasn't really a flea market. The old/used items they did have were pretty pricey. None of it was bad, and we love small, local businesses and bought a few things from them anyway, but I really miss browsing through old, absolute junk😅

What is the appetite like for vintage in Japan? I get the impression that in East Asia there has, until very recently, been a preference for only buying new. I must admit all the vintage I have sold to that part of the world has gone to South Korea.

It's really interesting about antique/vintage shopping. I do that a lot, and from conversations with various shop owners, I've found out that a lot of old, vintage (and highly coveted and expensive) cookware, like Corningware and milky Pyrex glass, gets purchased by people from Asia when they visit, most notably Japanese tourists with money to spend. Some of the stuff I can't really afford myself (I've seen single items go for $50 and up). But that's a different thing from flea markets, which I haven't visited in ages. Possibly because they have devolved in our area. High incidences of organized smash-and-grab crimes have led to many stolen items being sold at flea markets. It used to be something I loved doing, but I can't deal with unsavoriness of what they've become. My favorite flea markets back in the day were those in and around Berkeley, CA, where you could find some seriously interesting and fun stuff, and not all used, but always at really good prices. Nowadays, I just hit up local antique and vintage shops, where I find some really cool treasures still, but they are getting harder and harder to find.
This flea market is more like the art and wine fairs that happen around late summer to early fall. Lots of artisan and handmade stuff.

If you ever come to Brighton in England, there's a place called snoopers paradise which sounds like exactly the kind of thing you would love! I've lost entire days in there.

@@slavetobloodcomic I also have that impression, mostly because I think Japan likes being clean so it would make sense. And I absolutely agree old stuff is so cool, even just to look at! I don't know about South Korea. I've been to China many times but the flea markets over there also sell handmade things from my experience. Sometimes those things make me sad (I saw a flea market selling some ivory things made from real elephant tusks). Sometimes they're cool, like a guy who will make a glass sculpture of your zodiac, but he does it right there in front of you instead of selling them already made. My mom refused to buy from him though.

4:10 I'm an art student with a ceramics minor so I kinda know why this happens! I don't know the exact science behind it, but glazes often use metal oxides to get the desired color and depending on the temperature and what kind of firing is done (high fire or low fire, oxidation or reduction, etc.), the metals can leech into the surrounding clay creating that nice orange outline! In my experience it mostly happens with blue but if any more experienced ceramics lovers know more feel free to correct me lol

This video screams the future to me. Such big "I'm in love with being a citizen of the world!" vibes. Like it's clear they like the traditional Japanese things but I like the nods to the great things from around the world they like as well. Evidence: Japanese flea market with two Japanese international couples, Cincinnati building appreciation, Spanish style fish and rice dish for lunch (paella) which are definitely ingredients that Japanese cuisine definitely know what to do with, BUBBLES! (not really evidence I just like bubbles too, Rachel), back to more traditional Japanese fare of large fish market, Palm Trees giving Hawaii/Florida vibes for an outdoor seating area, and then woof I'm tired lets just enjoy the grounding experience of nature after all of these fun experiences.
Love your videos (and your funny edit comments), you two! Sending good vibes to both of you and your cats :)

The Kanmon straight area is one of my favorite places in Japan! Karato market is awesome, but I had no idea about the roof! You might enjoy the Toto museum in Kokura. I went there to kill some time during my trip, and it was a really fun experience.

In Koenji (Suginamiku in Tokyo), there are actual flea markets. Missions Live House used to host one once a month before closing. All kinds of old clothing, appliances, etc.

Fun fact about pigeons: they are actually feral pets. Just a few Generations ago. They can't survive in the wild, because they are domesticated. It's cruel not to feed them, because they need the help of humans, hence they settle in the cities. But their numbers can be controlled humanely (by exchanging their eggs for fake ones). Pigeons are awsome, not flying rats.

14:07 You get the grass "dense" by the selection of the cultivar(s) of grass. It's either one cultivar or a mixture of different cultivars together selected to grow not only for texture but also dependent on soil type and water management.

You should try researching plants you can put in your yard that are not grass. There are ones that are soft, change colors, and never have to mow. There's even ones with tiny little flowers. Soo pretty 😍

Korankei leaves reminds me of your "Beauty of Japan" video where you have a compilation of some of the most stunning views/photography including Korankei! I have been to Japan in late Spring and Summer, I really want to visit when it's fall time and go to Korankei!
Also, that flea market seemed to be more of a Crafter's market, but I loved all the vendors! Thank you for sharing!
