I too have lots of oranges! Juice, candy the peels, make marmalade. The oil in the skin is great for fragrance. I cut up peels and put them down the garbage disposal to make it smell great!! Also the oil & peels can be put around places, like the edge of the house to make ants etc stay away. Sooo many more ideas. I freeze the juice in cubes and crush them for a healthy slushy!

As soon as Jun started talk to the bird, I started to think "please don't train the crows. You already have control over cats, you don't need any more power!"
It is inevitable.
What you can do with the orange peels is boil it in water for about 10-15 minutes, and use that orange concentrate as a pest repellent for your plants. The peels can then be used as fertilizer. Hope that helps! :)

We used to have a tangelo tree, and we did a lot of cooking with our citrus. Orange bread, candied peels, fresh squeezed juice, canning, making natural cleaning products, oils, infusing water....the list is endless!
Yall can also freeze them for later projects!
Learn to make bath bombs and juice them, freeze the juice dry the peel and make candy and tea! Also get a compost bin

Hello guys! South American here! Jacaranda is actually a tall tree. I am not sure if it grows differently in Japan, but if not it can get as tall as your house. Be ready for that. It is a beautiful tree indeed.
Agree! We have a ton of Jacarandas in Australia too, and they are very, very tall.
Came to say the same. It's a big tree, I personally would place it somewhere else far from the house itself. Also, they shed their petals all over the ground so be prepared for that too!
If it does well we'll move it a little farther away! Right now we planted it where we did so we could see it from the living room. It seems like most Jacarandas here are grown in pots, pruned to stay small, and brought indoors for the winter since we can occasionally get a frost. So we might end up doing the same and repotting it before next winter, anyway.
It can be trimmed and kept to about 15’. However, if you have the space, it is a beautiful big tree with a wonderful, open shade structure.

Corn is my favorite grain! because it's a grain :P! Here in Chile, we eat a lot of corn during the summer and we have at least three main course meals with corn as the main ingredient. I love it!
I'm from Iowa, U.S. so corn is a local favorite veggie side dish. Make it southwestern and that is my absolute favorite way to eat it 😋

In German we have a nicer term for weeds, normally you would call it 'Unkraut' [un(wanted) herb] but you can also say 'Beikraut' [with/among herb] it's often used for plants that are not necessarily supposed to be there but you don't mind it. Alot of times those plants are very good for insects and all the animals that follow in the food chain.
I love that there are nuanced words for intention! The language lessons I want- yes!

@@mekabare I also only heard of the word a few years ago. And it's not used by many yet either, but I find it much better than 'Unkraut'.
'Unkraut' has such a bad connotation, it's something you're supposed to get rid of, even though all those plants can be so beneficial to your garden and the nature around you.

There is also the word "Wildkraut", which is used for herbaceous wild plants, that are actually not just neutral, but useful to humans. A lot of the plants we consider to be weed are edible and quite healthy
Those Forget-Me-Nots will spread like CRAZY. They grow naturally in mine and my neighbour's yards, and they're absolutely everywhere lol. I love it though because they're beautiful

They look a bit ratty after they're finished, but they self-seed. Simply pull them up, shake them around and they'll come back in full glory next year.
@@lynda.grace.14 I did that last year in my garden and also transplanted the ones that were too big into areas that were bare soil and now they act like a weed but I love them. Very easy to rip out if necessary. They can be used in a small amount dried in tea mixes as well.
I love that Rachel reused the rocks they found in their yard instead of buying tiles or paving stones and it looks great!
Even though jaracanda trees are from South America, Mexico City is filled with them because a president asked a famous Japanese gardener to plant Sakura trees through the city but the gardener told him Sakura wouldn’t survive in this weather so instead he planted jacarandas. Now the city is filled with them and they bloom every spring, they’re really lovely!

crows are very smart indeed! i learned online that you can 'trade' with them by giving them food they like and they might start to bring you things. when i used to live in a place with a lot of crows, i'd leave out peanuts on my windowsill during times when they can see me and eventually they just started chilling on there. they never brought me stuff but i'd feel cool when i was studying on my desk and there were just crows chilling by window.
If you guys like purple blooms I feel like you have to get a wisteria or fuji tree. They're legendary asian blossom trees, and also native to Japan. So would be a win win for native species.
and as a bonus, the flowers of wisteria are edible! :D can make syrups w them and use them as a finishing touch to dishes
You have to be careful with wisteria though. Some types are incredibly poisonous to pets like cats and dogs. They're absolutely beautiful, but with their fur babies around it's probably better to be safe.
Wisteria is lovely! My neighbor has a HUGE Wisteria that I get to enjoy.
Wisteria are beautiful but need a lot of pruning and maintenance or they'll completely take over your garden. If you let them get out of control they're impossible to get rid of, very aggressive plant

Otherwise, you guys could try making marmalade with them! Unlike jam or jelly marmalade uses up everything (juice, pulp, and peel) and stores for months if you can it properly!

I was thinking the same thing about giving them to the neighbors, I thought of the nice man who helped them with the lawn when they first moved in. Growing up we would always share our excess fruits with the neighbors and they would do the same😁

Rachel's slightly pained "I want more [flowers]" is such a mood, whenever I go plant shopping I wanna take home half the store despite not having the space for it 😂👍
I dream of having a European medieval style monastery garden, with little patches of herbs and medicinal plants with walkways in between. I think it's really pretty and bees and other pollinators love the flowers.
One of my favorite meditations or sleep segues is to imagine my dream home, which also includes my dream garden.
A nice, inexpensive way of planting a patched herb garden is to prep your area with new soil/fertilizer mixed into the old soil, rake it flat, and then make a checkerboard with old bricks (or new, whatever) so that you have patches of bricks and patches of soil alternating. You can make them whatever size you want, you just have to make them the same size each time, like four bricks, then a four-brick-sized open patch. Then fill the openings with your herbs; they grow to fill the patches, and the roots stay moist beneath the bricks as the root structure grows outwards. First time I built one of these it was to fill a corner space between the side of a patio and a 90-degree wall; I made a triangular checkerboard garden and filled it with cooking herbs. It's not a monastery garden, but it fills the same kind of purpose and structure-- contained herbs, neatly planted, with areas (the bricks) where you can walk and lean over to pick or cut the leaves. You can even brick a path through the middle if you have room.
And you can hire someone to be a professional hermit! Commit to the bit 100%!
Cut oranges, apples and other fresh fruit and vegetables, place smallish pieces on the bird feeding table, and the crows will rapidly get used to you coming out to fill it. Use the same colour bucket only for this to carry the food out, and they will rapidly associate you and that bucket as bringing treats. That will allow you to watch them without them alarming after a month or so.
Note the Jacaranda will drop copious quantities of flowers in the spring, literally carpeting the garden underneath it with dropped flowers, and will be very beautiful, but very messy as well. Plenty of streets here lined with them, and they carpet the streets for 3 months of the year. Pretoria is also known as the Jacaranda city because of the number of trees, and even has a radio station named after the tree. However they are a declared pest, so as they age out they are not replaced with the same, instead using indigeneous plants, that can be less messy, and which survive and act as food for birds as well.
It’s so lovely to see Rachel and June moving into their dream house and planting their dream garden, you two deserve it and I hope you continue to love it

- Make jam (peel the oranges first, that way it won't be as bitter as it is store-bought)

I've missed you 2 sweeties!! In the U.S. you can put the rinds/peels of fruits into the soil around trees and bushes to provide nutrients to the roots. Apple, banana, potato peelings are all great for this. I'm sure in Japan there are fruits that grow that would be great for this too. I love your huge yard! It's beautiful there! Be sure that the climate is right. At least here (Germany, so a bit more north than USA) you aren't supposed to do that because the peels don't properly decompose or rather they need way too long.

@@ateisate7270 i used to bury all my vegetables scraps, they were decomposed arround a month if they werent like corn ( that took 2 months), i had to stop doing that because my cats would go to the soil and lay in it, leaving all the scraps unburied, so i got a compost bin, but is a slower process.
Wow so jealous of your hydrangeas, they look so big and vigorous and will be so beautiful! It's amazing that you managed to dig them up and relocate them by your window, what a gorgeous view it will be, like Kamakura. I recently bought some hydrangeas but my garden is small so I am keeping them in pots. They're not super healthy at the moment, but hopefully over the years they will become big strong bushes like yours!
I was a bit worried about moving them since they were so large and well established, but I guess since hydrangeas are native here once you get them in the ground they know what to do, lol. A number of roots were severed in the process and they sprouted just fine.
I even planted a small, potted hydrangea that wasn't doing well way before we moved in. Never came back to water it and it grew happily. Then one time we hired someone to cut our lawn and they accidentally mowed it down--it completely disappeared. We planted a different bush over it earlier this year. Come this spring and what do we find? It's growing again!! So we moved it and put it alongside the house, lol. 10/10 recommend planting directly in the ground when possible, haha.
Looove the crows! They are so smart! I’d recommend picking the fruit and donating it, but letting the crows at it is good as well. The peels will decompose on their own. Loved the video! Good luck on the garden!
To pick up the oranges there's a thing you can get that is a cage with flexible wire attached to a handle and you can roll it around to pick up the oranges, idk what the rules are in Japan about roadside stands but you could always sell the extra oranges or make a bunch of marmalade.

Bit of a long process but you could squeeze all the oranges into orange juice concentrate. Freeze up what you can't drink for extra vitamin C in smoothies, maybe even turn them into sorbet!
My thoughts too, then they would have a source of vitamin C for the winter
We grew up with an orange tree in our backyard and taking a slice and squeezing it over some vanilla ice cream was always a treat, not quite the bulk usage, but still good

I've seen people plant Clover instead of grass, its better for the ecosystem, bees and nice to walk on. It also looks very pretty so please consider!
We let clover take over our back yard (about half an acre) and loved it! Bees and butterflies galore when the blossoms appear. Felt lush and refreshing to be around.
My entire front yard is clover, ivy, and moss, and I love it~ It's starting to take over my back yard and I can't wait. I won't have to cut the grass, for one, and the bees'll love it
They already have native plants everywhere, I don't think they need a replacement.

While watching Rachel and Jun visit gardens and garden centers these past months, I've been watching more videos about Japanese gardens. I'm used to looking at American and European style gardens and the Japanese gardens are just so beautiful and different to my eye. The peacefulness, symmetry, colors, water features are amazing; I can go down that rabbit hole for hours on end.

I wouldn't recommend getting the crows into the habit of eating directly from the garden area; if they're anything like Alaskan ravens, they'll get VERY offended when you try to shoo them off. They might be able to learn to pick at a specific pile if you relocate any extra fruits to a compost pile? That way they leave your garden alone.
Granted, I have a lot of love for ravens that transferred to crows when I moved.
My dream is to befriend a raven so it will bring me things it loves in exchange for treats. They are so fascinating!

It should be okay if they have a dedicated bird feeding area, like mentioned in the video. If they want them to keep out of the trees, they can hang strips of aluminium foil on the branches. The sound and movement keeps crows away. Crows are intelligent enough to recognize people respecting them. They will get that they're allowed to be in certain areas of the garden and eat certain foods. But I wouldn't recommend using the compost pile for it, they will take that apart and dig for worms and bugs.

Nice to have oranges, our citrus trees were removed during the canker scare of the mid 00s here in Florida. Now farmers are facing citrus greening.
We also had a grove down the street that got turned into houses and a school right after the canker pandemic.
I would invest in a good juicer and gift some orange to your neighbors.
I've lived in florida my whole life and never knew about citrus cankers! Very interesting indeed
@@fantasticfr0g It blew up in the mid 2000s. Developments took advantage of it to build. It was rumored it was spread on purpose and ever the slightest signs of canker had whole groves removed.
The state ended up to live with canker now and leave it in the hands of growers to decide if their trees need to be removed.

As an addition to a lot of great suggestions for the oranges I recommend drying/dehydrating them in slices! They look SUPER pretty and can be used in decorations (like gifts or wreaths) or for example as a seasoning for cocktails/mocktails or tea etc. 😍 Thank you for showing us your progress once again, still super hyped for you for the new house! Hi guys! Orange girl is here. My city is famous for its oranges and we get lots of oranges after harvest. So my recommendation is to freeze them in the refrigerator! You can use them later to make ice cream, orange juice or even add to your lemonade (depending on its type you can add all of it -without peeling - to the blender!) Also don't throw away their zest. For example if you want to drink juice first shred the outside layer in a plastic bag then use the rest for juice. You can frost these zest for a long time. And can add the cakes and other desserts.

Oranges: when we had excess oranges once, we selected the good shaped ones for orange juice, and from the bad ones we made spirit ( what we always do here, in Hungary from any fruit that's about to go bad). excellent for gifting it to neighbours too

I'm very curious about the weeds/ local plants to be honest. I always felt like Japan's flora was a bit different than Europe's so if you'd talk about the specific trees/ plants you chose or already have there and what their role in the ecosystem is that would be super interesting. I loved the footage of the frog in the beginning! Do you have a pond nearby? How did it get there? We have a pond just on the other side of our garden, but frogs don't come to our garden since we don't have a big water source...
You guys can dry the oranges and use them for simmer pots with fragrant herbs. They make your house smell really good 😊

Ohio is 90% corn. My high school mascot was a Greenwave! It was meant to embody the green waves of corn fields before they ripen up to harvest.

Orange Jam, orange syrup, dried oranges for tea... there are lots of things to do with the oranges. Also making jam and gifting some to the neighbours might be nice.
Yess! My grandma harvests way many fruits from the trees in her year every year... She always gifts them as jam. I bake a bread for us to split and enjoy together whenever she brings me one. I can't help but feeling that it's a waste to use store bought bread to eat it. 😅😅

Aw the crows are so crafty and smart! I only know the word 'Karasu' from a sports anime called Haikyuu, the main team followed is Karasuno lol. Love watching gardening videos very relaxing to watch even though I know its a lot of hard work. Hopefully you two are having fun and are getting plenty of rest in-between. I had citrus trees growing up. My parents weren't much for cooking and canning, so we gave bags full to everyone we knew: my school teachers, friends, family, neighbors, door to door salesmen, anyone unlucky enough to stop by during citrus season. Was almost as bad as zucchini hauls.
I feel like making orange juice is best thing to do with too much oranges.

I'm kind of hoping they milk their house tour for as much as humanly possible. Kitchen tour, houseplant tour, tour of the cat furniture and other accomodations, normal house tour, it's so lovely seeing them enjoy their new home.

I think the birds Jun was filming first were ravens, and the one carrying the orange was a crow. I have a lot of birds in my garden and love watching them. Never seen a raven tho, their sounds are different from crows too. 🌱

Oh !! That duranta plant ! Our direct neighbor has it and it's peaked through our fence for years ! I have no idea it was native to where I live ( the Caribbean ), the more you know... The flowers smell SOOOOO good, I used to call them vanilla flowers when I was a kid because they smell... like vanilla !

The crows definitely understand your house as a good food source. Also, crows remember faces and voices. So, if you start interacting with them more frequently, they'll be more friendly like starting to bring you things!

With oranges, I think you can freeze the zest, and you can always make marmalade and juices, candies, baking and cooking in general, and it's always fun to give fruit you've grown yourself to friends. You'll always have excess, but there are nearly infinite orange-related recipes.
I absolutely love crows and ravens! They're so smart! My husband and I leave a bag of cracked corn in our car to offer to birds whenever we see them!
I'm loving all of this. Plants and flowers make such a difference to the atmosphere.

If you have Aggressive numbers of oranges from your orange tree, 1) feed them, they’re working hard; and 2) juice the fruit! It takes so many fruits to be juice!
I live in Hawaii and lots of houses here have fruit trees so it’s common in my neighborhood to have pop up fruit stands in front of peoples property. They leave the fruit out on the stand and leave signs with recommended tips or a venmo QR code! It could be a nice way to give back to your friendly neighbors!
Use the peels for compost that can then be used in your new garden! The fruit tree is perfect! Or you could sell them 😂
If you make friends with the crows they will actually start bringing you little gifts. There’s videos and stories all over the Internet about it. It’s really super cute.

When I was a kid, one of my friends had a bunch of apple trees on their property, and every year her family would invite a bunch of friends and neighbors over to have an apple sauce/apple juice making party. Everybody would take turns feeding apples into the crusher and cranking it, and when it was all over, we'd all take home some apple sauce and juice! Might be an option for you with your oranges since the neighbors are so friendly!

OMG you have a Jacarandá tree! Buenos Aires is full of them and I love how they turn the city purple every spring. They're quite big tho, maybe it'll need more space to grow later on

we have them here in Florida too! (though they have already finished blooming for the year. they bloom around April and early may here.)
I am glad you are encouraging the native plants to grow instead of uprooting them.
If you want an idea for a nice splash of colour in the garden maybe look into getting some purple prunus (specifically the "Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’"). It has really pretty pink flowers and its leaves go from a red(ish) start to a really pretty purple that can look black from afar. It makes for a nice change from the general green trees after the flowers are gone! On a side note I can't wait to see how the garden progresses! It's such a fun hobby ❤️
My neighbours and I do a fruit exchange with all the leftover fruit. Or make it into jam.

The garden already looks so pretty! Love the tiny titbits, like Rachel forgetting the forget me nots, the hungry murder of crows and of course, the cats. Also, composting the oranges may be a good choice! Can't wait for further advancements to the house! ♡
If I had a citrus tree that gave so many fruit that they were gathering on the floor I’d be happy! Mine doesn’t give too much fruit. I would definitely juice them! You can drink as fresh juice or make orangeaid, lemonaid, grapefruitaid, or limeaid, is my al time favorite! Give to your neighbors! I have a neighbor that had like 5-6 orange trees and I looked forward to getting bags of oranges several times every time they were in season! Sadly about 4-5 died and really damaged the surviving one in the last snow storm that devastated the state of Texas! ☹️ is what happens when it doesn’t ever snow at all and hadn’t snowed this much in over 30 years. Your garden is looking great!!!!!

I would suggest making orange jam or marmalade, making it easy to keep.
The plants you have to chose from are so wonderful different than the ones I can get here in Canada. Yay for different climates and diversity!
If you treat the crows well. They will learn your faces, and get comfortable with you. But if you treat them poorly. They will also learn you faces, and treat you badly. They will also tell all their friends if you are good or bad. Never let a crow you have to chase away know your face!! Lol
