      This is SO IMPORTANT! I doubled my water intake for a week (drinking 2 glasses of water instead of 1 every time i went to get water) and that alone made my skin less oily. Also, steaming or getting my skin to sweat in some way helps me a ton (as long as I remember to wash off the sweat afterwards)

    It's not that products make my face oilier... It's that some products just never fully absorb into my skin. It just sits on top. *sighs* Like I have no idea how some people layer multiple products without it turning into an absolute mess.

      She and other dermatology channels have done videos on oily skincare routines. I think she's saying not to think you have to remove/avoid every skincare product from your routine that might contain oil.

    • @sumlem
      @sumlem 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +62

      Skincare doesn't fully absorb and it's okay to have products sit on top if they're intended to help with the skin barrier. You don't need a huge skincare routine, but layering products can partly depend on whether something is silicone or water based. Silicone and water based products have a tendency to pill up when layering both types.

      I have extremely oily skin and acne prone, I've tried countless products at an extremely wide price range. In the end, I find luxury skin care products are the best. I know many people hate lux products and think they are a waste of money, but honestly they provide the best sensorial experience and leave my skin comfortable with immediate visible results. Even though I have layers and layers of different products, they all absorb quickly and provide smooth soft skin without any greasy or sticky feel. Granted, not all luxury products work on my skin, some are designed for dry skin or other types, but finding the right ones can be a life changer

      If you are using The Ordinary, it’s more because of the zinc. The zinc absorb the oils. I think what she meant is that your skin is not gonna produce less or more oils depending of the product you apply. Some products are going to absorb the oils but your skin is still producing the same amount. That’s what I understood but I can always be wrong

      Yeah exactly. I don’t know who she thinks is saying skincare is making their face produce “more” oil. I could never use a hydrating facial moisturizer and then use foundation, it would just melt off my face.

  • @KittenBowl1
    @KittenBowl1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Actually certain products including certain ingredients (how much it contains aka formulation) actually do make pores produce more oils or less, or block pores or tendency to block pores. It’s just as you feel you need more moisture with certain products or you feel hydrated more with certain products (hydration isn’t slapping in oils…but skins ability to absorb and retain moisture). Some ingredients do that. Too much alcohol strips moisture but make your skin produce more oils in order to compensate for the stripped oil. A tiny amount of alcohol in a product actually helps certain ingredients penetrate into the skin. So the formulation matters, not just the ingredients. It’s just how your skin reacts to certain products.

    I am dry (have eczema), but am also pretty darn acne prone and get milia. I personally relate to a lot of oily people because I used ABHOR how some thick moisturizers meant for dry skin (nivea creme is a prime example) would just sit on the skin for a long time. I dunno how to explain it, but it's like having a coating on your skin but you can feel the space in between the coating and your skin, and it really bothered me. Not to mention that sometimes thick creams made me sweat AND trigger my acne and milia. Because of that minus vaseline/petroleum jelly, a lot of the products I prefered were stuff that combination and oily people preferred (toners, serums, gel cream). Now that I am older I am better at just tolerating these type of sensations as long as the product gets it job done and not trigger my acne (cetaphil moisturizing cream on face, nivea creme on hands) and there are products with better technology that it absorbs into the skin quite seamlessly (la roche posay lipikar ap+m balm, nature republic green derma mild cica cream), but still it's a hassle in a lot of ways to find an appropriate moisturizer for my skin and brain.

    When people with oily skin talk about products “making them oily or oilier” its OBVIOUS we refer to the sensation or the look of our faces, not necessarily the oil production itself.
    Because even if a product doesn’t _physiologically increment oil production_ , it can *absolutely* make the face oily/oilier if the texture isn’t right for you.

      i think her point is oily skin peeps shouldn't be hyperfocused on looking for products that 'reduce oil production' bc that's not a thing and cosmetic products don't really change the way your skin functions. think that 'myth' of people refusing to use moisturizers because they have oily skin. certain products may be better/worse in the cosmetic or sensory sense, but just as clay masks don't truly 'make you less oily', putting oils on the face doesn't increase how much oil your skin outputs (just makes it a lot more unbearable bc you're adding more oil onto existing oil)

    • @DeadKraken
      @DeadKraken 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@soshi-805 That also isn't true. It's proven that having an hydrated skin(also by using a good moisturizer) slows down oil production, and BHA like salicylic acid help limiting oil production too, while agents like denaturated alcohol increase sebum production by excessively drying and irritating the skin.
      Clay masks only absorb sebum on your face in that moment, they do not have lasting effects, like using an HA hydrating moisturizer or a BHA toner is, so I don't understand why she used that useless example. Hyper sebum production is not dependent only on hormones and genes, she should know that lol

    • @soshi-805
      @soshi-805 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DeadKraken I believe another thing with oil production is if the skin barrier is damaged or overdried, more oil is produced to help hydrate and restore it. So in that sense proper hydration can help and drying products can hurt. But again, regular products shouldn’t have the ability to alter skin functions. That’s stepping into medication territory, and anything below that should only help with the sensory or cosmetic aspect (removing excess sebum, or mattifying)
      And doesn’t BHA just work in the pores to remove sebum? I’m unsure whether it can regulate oil production, altho it would make sense if it does, as it is indeed a topical medication
      Of course i think there are other factors too, weather, humidity etc. but I’d be inclined to trust her on how the skin works, after all she’s a derm and we’re likely just not as knowledgeable😅

      @@soshi-805 The skin barrier part is exactly it. The skin is an organ and oily skin(especially if sensitive) is used to a certain amount of oily coating\barrier on it, so if you try to take away that barrier with harsh chemicals, the sebaceous glans simply produce more, thus getting oily and shiny faster.
      The thing is that there are 2-3 levels of "culprits" for oily(or all the other types of) skin, and external stimuli\care is simply one of them, so taking care very well of the external part, you can diminish the problem. That's all.
      BHA not only deeply cleans the pores, but is also an exfoliating and anti-inflammation agent, it helps slowing down oil production simply by unclogging pores and reducing any sort of infection\inflammation that may be irritating the skin. It's not miraculous but for a person with oily skin(me lol) even a small betterment is very noticeable and appreciated.
      Idk about that last part, I've seen loads of "board certified" derms on TH-cam say bullshit just to have more comments(and more views), this one herself I remember having a video dedicated to products to use on oily skin a while ago with pretty much the opposite spirit of this one(so they do make a difference lmao). Derms can also be very very wrong, I had 4 in the last 6 years and my skin started to look better the moment I started to look for things on my own. In 31 years of life, 21 of which lived with acne, no one ever suggested using BHA, or gel mosturizers, or anything that actually works on my oily, acneic but sensitive skin. I have scars because of derms incompetence.
      At this point I don't trust anyone that denies what peer reviewed scientific research demonstrates, I don't care what their profession is.

    I’m not a dermatologist. But I kind of know that oily skin sometimes it happens because of the skin lacks of moisture so it produces extra oil to replace the moisture. So that would ended up with oily skin. I would recommend oily skin people to clean their face properly and use hydrating products in the appropriate amount followed by products those lock moisture over the top at night. I’ve tried it myself and it works.
    That made me know that I have dry skin. Not oily skin….

But it is not that oily anymore. Becausw I choose gentle product, avoid alcohol, and sometimes when I'm in the house wearing nothing on mh face, I just pat some water on my face and it really helps to stop my face getting oily. Products marketed for oily skin are the worst for me. For some reason, the beauty industry insists that if you have oily skin, it MUST be accompanied by breakouts and that’s not always true. Products that strip your face of moisture (for me, anything with salicylic acid) cause your face to produce much more oil. Once I switched to gentle cleansers, it got a lot better.
