One thing I think they got really right is Crowley's movement. Notice that he never walks or sits, he always swaggers and lounges and sprawls.

As a person who did read the book I’m very glad to tell you that it’s the exact same tone. There are some elements of the tv show that aren’t in the book and vice versa, but it’s still all like the book. We (the “have read the book previously” club) had some doubts about the right translation to the screen for things like the narration (which is exactly like the book).
Great reaction hope you’ll like the rest of the show as well 👍🏻.

10:04 I'm happy to say that that *is* what happened to the third baby. This exact few lines spreading concern for the third infant is also in the book, and its later revealed that the baby was indeed adopted by a couple who also lived in Tadfield, and he became Adam's sort-of childhood rival. So yeah, third baby is fine with lovely parents, a secret love of tropical fish, and an implied later successful career in football.

There are an astonishing number of interviews with the cast and crew. The marketing has been insane. They've spent a fortune both making and marketing the series.
One of the many things we learn is that Michael Sheen was attached very early on as he and Neil Gaiman have been friends for over ten years and he was a big fan of the book. They tell an amusing story about how Neil thought Michael would want to play Crowley but he wanted him to play Aziraphale. Michael thought Neil wanted him to play Crowley, but Michael thought he wouldn't be able to pull it off and he wanted to play Aziraphale. Each was afraid to tell the other.
David Tennant was added when Neil was writing a particular scene in Ep3, that he thought only David could pull off. He wrote the rest of the script with him in mind. Rob Wilkins said he was their dream Crowley anyway (after Peter Sellers died), as Terry Pratchett loved David. David was not familiar with the book until he got sent the script.

Douglas Mackinnon said he wanted the CGI to be sort of cartoony. He said they don't want to make CGI a focus, showing off what they can do, just a means of telling the story:
“What is it that brings a story home? Do we need spectacle all the time?” director Douglas Mackinnon asked. “People are bored with 20,000-person armies running up the hill. The only way CGI works is if you personalize it. I felt really passionate about our CGI looking kind of messy and handmade, and not slick. It’s grungy and earthy.” Especially when it’s exploding out of the earth." (SyFy wire)

Here are some did you know facts: the dog bit Tennant in the calf at one point so after he finished whatever scene was next he had to go to the hospital to have it stitched up and that really was him in the burning book shop (the roof began to catch fire at one point, it got to bad) and also climbing out of the burning Bentley at the Army gate. He tries to do all his own stunts wherever possible (or allowed due to insurance issues) with Doctor Who and Hamlet being very good examples.

‘People who meet aziraphale come away with three impressions, that he was English, that he was intelligent and that he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide. Angels are intelligent, angelic my speaking, and sexless.’ Paraphrased heavily but in the book Gaiman and Pratchett imply that aziraphale has spent so long in soho that he might be taken for a Brit. He was written as dithering, neurotic and camp so he might also be taken for being gay most expectant when he’s with Crowley. And anathema does this when she is dropped off at her cottage by the pair in the car. It’s really funny.

One little info. The book was written not only by the brilliant Terry Pratchett (RIP😢) but by the equaly amazing Neil Gaiman who is also the showrunner of the series. He made the adaptation happen (as truthful as possible to their book) to honor Terry's last wish and imho he got it right!

Neil Gaiman, who co-wrote the book and was showrunner for the tv series, said that making god a woman and Adam and Eve black was a good way to let certain people know that this show wasn't for them. He also seems to take a lot of delight in white supremacists being angry about it.

The CGI fascinates me in Good Omens. By normal standards these days you could describe the CGI as bad, but for me personally the CGI just fit the tone of the show so perfectly. Everything about the show is quirky, weird, all the characters are slightly not-what-they-should-be, and the CGI is exactly the same. I can understand why it might jar you out of the story a bit though, even if I loved it.

I'm so glad you enjoy it so far! I've read the book first so it was
    1. awesome to see the way portrayed so many things I had a hard time picturing
    2. a bit less immersive since I already know what happens
I'm curious what you'll think as it goes on!
Aside from that though... please stop using the word "trigger" to mean being annoyed/inconvenienced/offended. Too many think that's what it means because it's been overused in mocking those with actual negative reactions to things, like people with PTSD and trauma. A trigger is not a fun thing to have, and it's not funny when it happens.
I absolutely get what you mean but it is a useful word actually used in psychology and using it this way makes the people who actually need it to stop using it because of the connotations it now has.

I read the book as an 8th grader. I am now going into the summer after my first year of university - that being said, years have gone by. But I remember LOVING the book. I remember some elements and specific moments. Memorable moments.
Every single one of those memorable moments - the ones that stuck out to me - were exact on this show. The tone of the book is given ingeniously through the “narration of God,” which is something that a lot of books-turned-to-shows miss out in. The narration of events is a big part of a book (especially in this particular book’s comedy) and it’s amazing that they managed to add in God to make it even more accurate!!
Terry Pratchett did, indeed, write the book - along with Neil Gaiman. I think my sister said something to me about the two of them writing it over written correspondence, i.e. letters, emails, etc., before it was published in 1990.
Neil Gaiman, the showrunner of this Good Omens adaptation, thought of Pratchett as a mentor more than anything. Gaiman is a strong and well-known author himself, but in Good Omens you can see him shaping his writing to fit Pratchett’s - he always thought of Terry as the truly gifted one. Pratchett’s mock-parody tone in the book is exactly what Gaiman has translated into the show.
Furthmore, I emphasize how GREAT it is that the several attempts to adapt this show failed in the past. As movies - there’s SO MUCH going on, so many backstories and characters (you haven’t met many of them yet) that it would take away so much from the content to make it in anything but a limited miniseries. Before Pratchett died, he essentially made it his dying wish that Gaiman would adapt their book onto the screen in some way - and Gaiman set to work. I like to think Pratchett would be proud of how it turned out :)
Anyway, enough of my rant - I’m glad I found you lol, you were really genuine and I liked watching this! I see in another comment you watch Umbrella Academy, sooo imma go find that :)))) can’t wait for you to react to the next episode of Omens!!!

It's spot on as far as I'm concerned. Of course, there are those little things that you have to go one way or another on once you're faced with the audio-visual medium, rather than just prose. I think they made the right choices. In the book, the narrator isn't given any gender (though the general tone had it in my head as the typical _HHGTTG_ Peter Jones voice). I don't recall Adam and Eve's skin color being mentioned (even the source material on that doesn't really specify ;) ). Adam Young's friend Brian is described as 'plump' in the book, but doesn't look to be the case in the show. Trivial, at most. I can't think of any deal-breakers, or even things that would particularly rile me up enough to really complain about the adaptation.
    Glad you're enjoying it! :D

Yessssss! So glad you're reacting to this!
The book has been one of my go to reads in times when I've needed a good cheering up, and the show is really true to the original text. So much so that I binged the entire series in one sitting, and I don't mind telling you I got a bit glassy-eyed at how close it is to the book I love. Soooooo good!
And you're going in cold never having read the book! You're in for a treat!!!
(p.s. - as for the cgi worries - rather than bad, I like to think of it as delightfully kitsch/stylised and fitting in with the slightly ramshackle tone of the tale. At which point you just let the story take you and it ceases to become a problem. ^_^ )

I don't think the look the show creators and crew chose for heaven and hell had anything to do with budget. In numerous interviews and in the authorized Good Omens TV Companion, Neil Gaiman said that the set designer's original concepts were for a fire-drenched, "traditional" hell, but that he asked for a more tawdry, sordid, damp, ugly, dingy basement design to show to make a certain point or statement about hell. Hell isn't grand or exciting or thrilling; it''s just sad and uncomfortable and shabby and painful.

Like, I'm pretty sure I have never ever seen an adaption that follows the book as truthfully as this one and it made me incredibly happy because I've been a fan of the book for 20 years so I had High Expectations™. Funnily enough that was a reason for many people to dislike the show now because Pratchett and Gaiman have a very particular writing style and the show adapted it perfectly, so it's not for everyone, I guess. I honestly couldn't be happier ^^ I still strongly recommend reading the book, tho, because there are A LOT of inside jokes and winks in the show that one will only notice if they read the book. So, great bonus.

Hi, I haven't read the rest of the comments that might have addressed this but, although I did like your reviews very much I really didn't appreciate all the digs against the US. Yes, a lot of us do eat healthy food and no the military don't routinely point guns at children. I am sure you said a few other things about us as well. As far as the Doctor Who references are concerned, yes that as Gallifrey, the Bentley's tag read SID RAT which is reverse for TARDIS, the kids said that if aliens ever visited they would say "Exterminate" and there were a few more. And something interesting that most people did not notice is that when the boy was confronting satan you could see Aziraphale over one of his shoulders and Crowley over the other. Just like the proverbial angel on one and a demon on the other that most of us have :-)
