This is why I love OB videos with Michael.
Other overland youtube channels- You don't need to spend a lot of money to overland. (Drives an almost new tacoma or wrangler and puts tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear in it, oh and I didn't pay for it bc ________ sponsored this video).
Michael - Here's a non-essential piece of gear that's kinda nice to have that's a significantly cheaper option than the other options like it bc that's what fit my budget. Oh, and I'm installing it on a vehicle I got for under $15k. Now go out there and explore, and if you happen to be looking for some good shade, check these guys out.

Back in 95 my first truck was an 88 trooper II I bought for $2500. $40 tent, Coleman cook top, and a big igloo cooler got me through 2-3 week trips through Appalachia. Those trucks were great when they worked.

We borrowed everything when we started. Tent, sleeping bags, cooking ware. Then slowly pieced our own things together. Good idea to see if you even enjoy it before you invest a lot.

I used to overland in an old Nissan truck that costed me $800 plus the topper I slept under that costed $60.
    Sometimes less is more.

Good video! You don’t need much to do it, and do it right.
I am currently overlanding in a 99 Jeep Cherokee XJ and sleep inside of it. The money I save with a cheaper rig, and no roof top tent and trailer, made it so I go further, have more places I can stay, and do it for 8 months.

Rig, shelter, bag, food, water, some way to heat food. Same as overnight camping, just add on from there as needed.
Thanks for keeping it real Michael.

If it "doesn't matter what you drive", why would it matter what you put on your vehicle? Go, go and go for overland! It's simple like that. Great video!

Hi, thanks for sharing. I have a FoxWing 270, which I love. The big plus for me, I can unpack and pack in the dry undercover of the awning, the 1st and last item to pack is the awning, less wet kit gets packed into the truck to be dried out later. The only big minus for me is it has to be pinned down. So which means you always have to pitch it on soft ground. Slightest bit of wind and it will take off, so please be careful. Enjoy your new awning, you will love more in the rain than in the sun ;)

I have this same overland pro in their original prerelease model, haven’t had the chance to install it yet on my FJ, waiting till I ordered some clamps to mount it which I got a notification that the mounts will be delivered tomorrow but today I backed into a steal carport beam and crushed my backdoor of my FJ Cruiser in where it won’t open now and shattered the rear window. So after I get that fixed (if I can even find parts) I’ll install it eventually. But watching your video will help me with my install thanks Michael.

You sir are spot on, overlanding or just general camping does not have to be expensive, I camp\4wd in a 93 80 series which cost me under $5000 Australian, with a few basics and essentials I get to where I’m going easy
    That’s all that matters

Used to travel around the country in my 1975 dodge 1 ton with a cap on the back and camping utensils back in the day I guess you could call it overlanding on the cheap and it was fun to!

Be careful of winds before you secure with the tie lines. Winds can uplift the awning and break the hinge mechanism. Guess how I know this ;-)

Overland bound, When did you realize that installing it on the drivers side would make it open up over the windshield? LOL I'm like thats not the drivers side. And then I saw how it opened up and thought that wouldn't work anyway over the drivers side. Great video. I like that price for sure. And would definitely be down with doing a little extra when opening it up. I can imagine that shade in places like baja would be a necessity. Thanks for sharing for us budget conscious types.

I'd like to see a complete budget. You mentioned the $12,000 purchase price but you don't talk about all the build costs and repair costs. How much have you really spent in total including the engine replacement, lift, tires, shocks, paint, welding, rad repairs, tows, etc. What is that total number? Would a leased new overland vehicle with warranty not be a better investment?

    • @OverlandBound

I replied below to someone else's post, but I wouldn't recommend these awnings. You can see how flappy that thing is without the "optional" poles. I have the 2000 version and it's very difficult to get the last grommet hole to seat. I'd love to see him set this up with the other poles. I'm curious if it takes forever like mine. Also, it's basically a 2 person job.

Great video, I haven't noticed this on the rig recently tho, or maybe I've just missed it. Do you still have it? Would you recommend it? They also make a normal awning which is interesting but for about 100 or so more you get the wrap around, I just have to commit to which way my RTT is going to sit forever before buying a 270 awning since they are side specific. Thanks again

    • @levimartin4607
      @levimartin4607 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I have the 2000 model I wouldn't recommend it. The optional poles seem necessary to me unless you want to be staking out guy lines and still worrying the thing is going to fly away. But for me whenever I put the optional poles on, it takes about 15-30 minutes of yanking and tugging on it with all the strength I have to get the last grommet hole to seat. It's too bad the materials seem nice enough and the side wall kit is not bad. I'm going to try taking it all apart and cutting some of the length off all the tubes, because I'm stuck with it for now. It seems like the whole thing is just slightly too big. The owner is apparently aware because you can't find any videos with the optional poles being used.
