@@CodyLeon you can get an Silverado ZR2 3.0 Diesel. What's wrong that that? From what I've read for awhile now the 3.0 has gotten better fuel mileage than the other half ton trucks.
Falling for tropes, like a lot of other guys. It’s actually a safety issue. After you lower the ground pressure so much with the wider tires, your performance on water, snow and ice suffers to an extreme degree. As for the broken windshield, I have a 1958 and have the same fears. A lot of them can be resolved in 2 ways. Drive like a nut and be in front. OR on the cruise control turn on the max distance and stay well behind. I’ve got 8700 on mine and so far not even a kiss. Though I know it’s coming.
@@charliemcawesome5012 I'm with you on the larger tire for floatation 100%. I've heard so many people talk about a narrow tire 'cutting down to a solid surface' in snow or such. All I can think is they've never actually been snow wheeling where there simply is no bottom. I wheel mostly in the Sierra where 'bottom' might be 10 feet down and the snow itself isn't that light/dry fluff you can push aside like water. No, it would rip a plastic factory bumper right off if you tried to push several feet of it around. And most modern vehicles are extremely heavy hence needing all the floatation they can get. That said, idk that I'd put a wider tire on that particular platform. It will never be a hard core wheeler just because of what it is. As a 'soft roader' or 'overlander' it should be pretty good, but it's easy to over-build trying to make it into something it's just not and start hurting other aspects of it's performance such as was mentioned above like the already poor fuel economy and component longevity. (the beef may be handled with the suspension upgrades but the hit from larger/heavier tires can't be avoided).
Gotta know the laws of where you are from, where you are going, and where you’re passing through. Also, state vs federal land and national parks may all have different laws. It can be a pain.
@backwoodstherapy Many western states are Constitutional Carry states that supercedes any permit issues. Also, carrying on BLM land is no issue and neither is carrying in National Parks. Provided you are following the state laws in those states and do not carry inside federal buildings in National Parks or other federal lands.
Also important is how to defend from attacking wildlife. There's lots of information on bears but big cats, rutting ungulates and in my area, wild piggies are a problem. I carry bear spray but wonder about the utility of a handgun (as a backup to bear spray).
Thanks for your honest assessment! Your upgrades are definitely well thought out for your needs and sounds like you're considering other future improvements. All that's expensive. Speaking only for myself, I don't want to have to rebuild a new 60K (+ or -) car. The small fuel tank and lower than expected milage give me real pause especially for a hybrid. I'm driving a 24 Outback Wilderness turbo and getting much higher milage than the sticker claimed. It also has incredible ground clearance. Goes just about anywhere off road. Got out of that purchase with all the bells, whistles extended service, tax & licensing for just over 47K. Not saying it's the perfect vehicle but when I contrast and compare I'm content.
I don’t know what to make of this. My old 97 80 gets similar fuel economy if I go through the trouble of converting the transfer case to 2wd and locking front hubs, can seat 7 with super easy to remove seats, has a tailgate, sliding rear windows for the dogs, leather seating, moonroof, radio can be upgraded to touchscreen + latest gizmos, brake controller can be installed, solid front axles front and rear, ground clearance for days on 33x10.5, locking rear and front diffs and a super reliable drivetrain. I was saving up for the new landcruiser, but help me make the case. I just seem to land on a 60k investment for less truck. Feels like a 10k investment to rejuvenate the 80 is a better deal.
My preference is sticking with the old. Been seeing warranty issues online re: transmissions and hybrid systems for the turbo/hybrid 4 bangers... really alarming warranty issues for very low milage Toyota vehicles. I've owned an FJ40 an FJ55, now have a 5th Gen 4Runner with 135k miles. The FJ's were unstable, heavy duty beasts off road but def heavy, under powered for freeway hills, and tended to overheat. 5th Gen 4Runner does everything Brad talks about in this video, pretty hard trails, bigger tank and better gas milage than the turbo/hybrid 4 banger, very comfortable and predictable on the freeway for a high clearance/low range 4x4 AND proven track record for reliability all with AC, ABS disc brakes, and 8 speaker surround sound and power windows/door locks. I don't ever see giving up on the 4.0 V6 for a turbo/hybrid 4 banger.

No new car is an "investment" unless you're keeping it for at least 25+ years and keeping it low miles & good condition, so that you can sell it for more as a collectible. If you want a newer Land Cruiser & you're worried about money, buy one that's only a few years old, so it has had the depreciation hit already.

I just got a Land Cruiser and going from my work to home in stop and go traffic through the city my average was 24.9 MPG. Pretty impressed and my average in the 3g Tacoma on 33's was 16.

I'm appreciative of you taking the time to make this video. Put whatever tires on you want. Wide tires dig the hole faster than narrow tires. For decades, service trucks intended for off road use (telephone company, railroad) always wore very narrow tires.

LRA makes extended fuel tanks for the 200 series (up to 40 gallons), best to check if they’re coming with something for the 250. For bumpers check with Dissent Offroad and Slee. Camburg arm looks like a uniball, not a ball joint.

This makes me appreciate my 60 series even more. It feels so good to row through the gears. Shifting in to 4wd doesn't come with anxiety that it may not engage. The only circuit board is for the AC.
It's an AWD all 4 wheels are pulling at all times, maybe your talking about the low range gearbox? Either way look for asian off road videos they will change your mind in offroaders

I have an LC at around 4K miles too and I get 22MPG consistently. When I come off a highway trip, I see 24MPG+ (stock 20" tires) on the trip. 13MPG, even with the heavy tires, is really surprising.
i get 24-20mpg daily in my '18 NA 2.7 tacoma...33" tires, steel bumpers, winch, etc...i expected way more from these new turbo computer cars, seriously sounds like a huge scam.

@@skateinspace the hybrids have more power but more importantly, lower emissions which benefits everyone. I'd pay a premium for a vehicle that had 10% worse fuel efficiency and 50% lower emissions.

In general, the complexity of vehicles over the years have meant simpler ownership with way more mileage between service intervals and longer life.
I have about 2,400 miles on mine and these are valid criticisms. I really do also enjoy the drive, as it's my daily driver as well as fun weekend vehicle. I do think some of the issues with some of the audible warnings and the sway bar disconnect reset could be updated with software, but I'm also not holding my breath for that to happen. For what it's worth, I have the Wescott full size roof rack and it is very quiet even at highway speeds.
I know you're a jeep guy..and was prepared to call you out for nit-picking..but I have to admit that the items you pointed out make perfect sense and I'm sure you will find work-arounds to most of it and maybe..just maybe, if they get feedback they may consider tweaks in the future like offering a large tank as an option. if there is room that is. Nice, really really nice vehicle. Looking great! Wish I had the back-country in my area that you have to enjoy! Can't wait to hear what the lifted LC gets for mpg's.
I’m a Goal Zero fan from way back, as well. Passing through SLC in the spring I was sure to stop in at their sales warehouse and picked up some great gear and also received some top notch support. I’ll continue to purchase from them.

Just a quick note on the firearm safe location... You cannot access it without opening the door. This may be something to consider, despite how amazing it looks in the current configuration. If you are inside your vehicle and the threat is outside, you are unarmed,. Something to consider.
That is why he said the firearms is typically carried on his person. The safe is only for situation where it needs to be stored/locked away; not readily handy. I get your point on accessibility, but for how he describes his use, seems like it will rarely be in the safe, so the access isn't much of an impact.

My 2004 Touareg has a V8 and adjustable air suspension. Goes up and back down for handling or off road. 205,000 miles. And a 28 gallon gas tank. As well as 6 piston front brake calipers. Not one small chip after 20 years aerodynamic thoughts.
I agree. Bought my 22PW and was looking forward to some great mods from Brad. The first thing I saw was the notice of no truck campers due to load capacity. No deal breaker. Installed Decked drawers and maybe should have gotten the cargo glide instead as I carry most of my gear in action packers. Been doing that for decades.
You are in a transition phase from Jeep to Toyota LC. I started with Jeeps for a decade & half. Remember looking down at others, until after seven years break from offroading my mechanic friend (Jeeps only) suggested I buy a Toyota LC. Skeptic at first, started revealing the advantages in the past 4 years. Especially, maintainance, reliability comfort. Performance is head to head with a slight advantage to the Jeep due to wide options of upgrades. Every offroad club here is fully aware of "You go offroading in a Jeep but come back home in a Land Cruiser". It certainly proved for me. I am sure it will for you. Enjoy.

my fuel economy went up 20% when I got closer to 10k miles. I break in vehicles really well and drive conservatively. I've also serviced it 3 times in the first 13k miles

I was shocked when you bought the Land Cruiser. Twenty minutes at the local dealership with a tape measure had me running for the exits, and the Bronco's history of broken steering racks convinced me that expensive upgrades meant to fix the drawbacks baked into independent suspension are a dog chasing its tail, if off-roading is your primary mission. Also sympathetic to the issues with all the Nanny Alarms: We have the same issue with my wife's Platinum trim Toyota Highlander. Always a relief to climb back into my 2019 JLU Rubicon. Thanks for taking the bullet for the rest of us with the Land Cruiser.
@@LaddGardner4 I think the land cruiser along with the Bronco are meant for the weekend warriors along with maybe one or two big trips a year. Yes, Jeep is better at rock crawling, but all these very capable vehicles all have their drawbacks. It gets expensive when people modify their vehicles outside of the engineer's intent or parameters. The steering rack was never an issue with the Bronco until people started to put bigger tires on them and didn't consider the other point of failures along that system.
@@husker_nation Yup, exactly, it's the compromise I'm happy to live with in order to get a more comfortable ride. I've had my "stock" Bronco in Moab and wheeled all of the 6-7 rated trails with no problems. My only mod to the steering rack are some sleeves for the tie rods. Ford has addressed that issue and now you get an upgraded steering rack with the Sasquatch package (the equivalent of the Jeep Rubicon xtreme package). I think that comparing a stock Bronco's capabilities to a modified Jeep isn't fair anyway. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the SAS Bronco are pretty much the same, capability wise. I certainly wouldn't take a stock Jeep on anything more difficult than what I take my Bronco on. But when you compare the stock Bronco to a Jeep with 40's and one-tons I think that's a bit unfair.
20 years ago most folks would have considered the new 2024 Land Cruiser just about perfect. It's amazing what time does for product perfection and our memories.

I must say, the gun safe is a really cool touch! Looks sleek and factory! love how it opens up. I knew CA had a CCW but I honestly thought it was almost impossible to get. This was just from what I’ve read on forums from many years ago. It was being alone with my wife, off-road and camping that originally prompted me to get into firearms many years ago. Glad you finally brought this up in one of your videos!
Brad, for the windshield, I would look to your local tint shops to see if they have ExoShield in stock. As soon as I got my Bronco, I went straight there and got it installed. It only costs about $200 here in Las Vegas (and I think about $20 for labor). Wasn’t too bad, and I’ve been off roading since last year and it’s definitely SAVED me some money threefold!
Thanks as always Brad. I have 30,000 miles on the Jeep JT and haven't had a crack in the standard windshield (non-gorilla glass). This includes a 5000+ miles loop earlier this year from SC thru Colorado, Moab, UT, and back down thru AZ, NM, TX, etc. Yes, I think an episode on firearm carry would be good. I am also retired ex-military combat vet and carry for protection. If you take the CCP class, then they go over state to state agreements in the training and is easy enough to look up, but the rules can be complicated. When I travelled from SC to out West or anywhere out of state I had to research the laws and where my SC CCP was recognized. Consider bringing on an attorney advisor for the show. I did have a situation back in the mid-90's in the Wyoming backcountry where it was necessary to ensure an aggressive party of several men to our off-grid campsite was made aware of our possession and ability to use such firearms. Our intervention allowed a nice family in the adjacent campground with small children to escape. We unfortunately had to displace from a great trout stream to an alternate location for the night in case they returned. So only one issue over all the years, and like I explain to my wife most people out in these places are regular good folks like us. But, you never know and should always be prepared to protect yourself, your family, and others. Those of us with military/LE other other defensive experience should be out there and carrying to protect our society as support to our current LE.

Being in favor of sensible gun control like many other countries have implemented instead of that BS that’s going on here (which doesn’t work bc all states have different regulations so you can go to the state with the most lax gun laws and get one) which doesn’t solve anything.
If you still have that roof rack that makes a ton of noise, you could try adding a wind deflector to the front of it. I’m not sure how much it would reduce the noise, but I imagine it would be worth trying.
Were you fed paint chips as a child? Lifting a vehicle most certainty gives more ground clearance. Did you think when adding a 1.75 or 3.0 lift that the the bottom of the chassis would just remain the same height after the lift? LMFAO
Hi Brad. Consider using the Rid’g Mega off-road hitch mount. It is a Class IV hitch rating. It mounts into your factory hitch and offers a pass through system and it can carry up to a 37”.
FWIW, took my new out of the box 5th gen 4Runner out for it's first off road trip and a rock hit and cracked the windshield at 666 miles on the ODO. I feel your pain!
I love my 200… but these new 250s just miss the mark. No split tailgate and a hybrid with poor fuel economy and an even SMALLER tank? It looks cool (even better in person) but there’s just too many compromises.

Hello I wonder if your making this something it shouldn’t be at all. It’s a comfortable 4x4 designed for wealthy farmers, would be the comment when comes too the UK 🇬🇧. It’s not that sort of vehicle really too be altering, what you have done so far looks brilliant and useful more maybe just too much. All the nice interior and stuff isnt really tough enough for messing about off road, that’s my thoughts on it. Looks ace with the styling now, wonder if some nice discrete bumper lights would be cool though. Take care Sam
I'm glad I didn't buy one of these or the GX 550. That fuel economy is abysmal, then throw in the 18 gallon tank. OUCH. That is not livable for me. I've had many rigs in the past 20 years, including the GX 460, which I absolutely loved. The second he lifts this thing I bet he gets 12 mpg on that 18 gallon tank. The spare tire is a big problem. The GX 460 could fit a 33, or an aired down and ratch-strapped 34. I see him ditching this in 6 months.
Hey Brad, I have a buddy with a 2 DR Bronco with the smaller gas tank. He fabricated a 9 gallon secondary tank that runs tandem with the main tank. It has really worked out well for extended Highway and off-road travels. Once you figure out your rear bumper and tire carrier set up, you should look into a similar system for your newly opened up space. Even though I am a Bronco guy I have loved and followed your TH-cam channel for years. See you out on the trails Brother!
Be careful - in some areas that wouldn't be legal. There are a number of both federal and state laws about how you can carry extra gasoline. That's the reason most of the big aux tank companies are really only going for the diesel market. With Brad in CA, any sort of plumbed-in extra tankage could cause issues with smog testing. Definitely one of those things you need to do your research on prior to spending the money.

It's more then that. In Ca all CCWs go through the sheriff's department of wherever you live. You have to apply and then typically there's a wait list anywhere from 3 to 6 months. You will then be interviewed by the department and have to have a good cause for why you want to carry among other questions. You also have to state the firearm you will carry and they will note the serial number the limit was 5 when I did it. Once approved then you have to do the training and what not. And like he said it's almost impossible in LA or bat area unless you have connections or are very wealthy. Orange County and Riverside are the easiest socal places to get it. They used to also do a home visit to see if you actually lived in the county but they stopped that now
@@Harps555 it’s hard to tell me it’s more than that as I have my ccw in California and have had one for a while. Good cause is not a thing anymore. It’s just good character, meaning no violent crimes, no domestic violence, lots of small run ins, etc. Most counties are pretty quick now as demand as lowered as most people who wants one already has one.
Like many of us, carrying firearms is must for my protection when off-grid camping /off-roading with wife and kids. Most of time, it with me (CCW) in person, however, like Trailrecon, I also have steel safe box bolted on vehicle. CCW and regular training help me more confident in the wild and chaos society today. Yes. It’s our 2A rights. I love people and nature…and no harm to even a little insect.
Well, I get 12-14 mpg even towing our patriot x3 in the highway and we have a 2011 Land Cruiser 200 on 35/12.5s with 4.88 gears but with the long range America aux fuel tank it’s not a problem. We have plans to add a 4Runner trailhunter to the garage, you can’t replace the 200 but it’s built for overlanding with the full kitchen slid out.
Turbo 4 banger with 2 electric motors ad the FE's do not have cloth interiors. Better than any Rover or Jeep that have to see the dealer for new transmissions at 60K miles LOL

I think I heard about this on a channel, something Ozark maybe Ozark Overlanding. They have gladiators. This said, I have a Sport (so regular glass) and in 10,000 miles my windshield is still ok but I wheel alone so I don’t follow others on trails.
"Those" conversations are always good. Personal protection is a reality. Silencing those conversations is ridiculous. Even if people don't want to carry, there are alternatives and should be discussed.
Got a rock chip on my windshield within the first 6 weeks as well. Gets tiring at 60 bucks a pop, but better than the 1400 the dealer would want to replace the whole thing. Overall a great vehicle.
Maybe a second channel is in order. I do think the offroad crowd is generally supportive of firearms. But like you said youtube has historically imposed some severe restrictions on firearms related channels.

My 2021 Jeep windshield broke after about 9,000 miles in three years, installed the thickest windshield protector I could find over the new windshield and it has survived a couple of hits up to now so I'm happy with it.
Sadly, this is too common everywhere. Other than the Wrangler (at least in the US) and to a lesser extent the Bronco there just aren't many offroad capable stock vehicles.
I would like to discuss carrying. I have Texas License to Carry. There are recipriocity states but there are also restricted areas even with a carry license. It can get confusing.
I feel like he gets rid of this within a year, much like the diesel and hybrid wranglers.

Why would you go wider on the tire? Narrow is better for turning radius, suspension cycle clearance, traction, fuel mileage and component longevity.

@@charliemcawesome5012 I'm with you on the larger tire for floatation 100%. I've heard so many people talk about a narrow tire 'cutting down to a solid surface' in snow or such. All I can think is they've never actually been snow wheeling where there simply is no bottom. I wheel mostly in the Sierra where 'bottom' might be 10 feet down and the snow itself isn't that light/dry fluff you can push aside like water. No, it would rip a plastic factory bumper right off if you tried to push several feet of it around. And most modern vehicles are extremely heavy hence needing all the floatation they can get.
That said, idk that I'd put a wider tire on that particular platform. It will never be a hard core wheeler just because of what it is. As a 'soft roader' or 'overlander' it should be pretty good, but it's easy to over-build trying to make it into something it's just not and start hurting other aspects of it's performance such as was mentioned above like the already poor fuel economy and component longevity. (the beef may be handled with the suspension upgrades but the hit from larger/heavier tires can't be avoided).

I think that would be a great video to talk about how and when to carry firearms throughout your travels, especially when crossing borders.
Gotta know the laws of where you are from, where you are going, and where you’re passing through. Also, state vs federal land and national parks may all have different laws. It can be a pain.
@backwoodstherapy Many western states are Constitutional Carry states that supercedes any permit issues. Also, carrying on BLM land is no issue and neither is carrying in National Parks. Provided you are following the state laws in those states and do not carry inside federal buildings in National Parks or other federal lands.
Also important is how to defend from attacking wildlife. There's lots of information on bears but big cats, rutting ungulates and in my area, wild piggies are a problem. I carry bear spray but wonder about the utility of a handgun (as a backup to bear spray).

Thanks for your honest assessment! Your upgrades are definitely well thought out for your needs and sounds like you're considering other future improvements. All that's expensive. Speaking only for myself, I don't want to have to rebuild a new 60K (+ or -) car. The small fuel tank and lower than expected milage give me real pause especially for a hybrid. I'm driving a 24 Outback Wilderness turbo and getting much higher milage than the sticker claimed. It also has incredible ground clearance. Goes just about anywhere off road. Got out of that purchase with all the bells, whistles extended service, tax & licensing for just over 47K. Not saying it's the perfect vehicle but when I contrast and compare I'm content.
I don’t know what to make of this. My old 97 80 gets similar fuel economy if I go through the trouble of converting the transfer case to 2wd and locking front hubs, can seat 7 with super easy to remove seats, has a tailgate, sliding rear windows for the dogs, leather seating, moonroof, radio can be upgraded to touchscreen + latest gizmos, brake controller can be installed, solid front axles front and rear, ground clearance for days on 33x10.5, locking rear and front diffs and a super reliable drivetrain. I was saving up for the new landcruiser, but help me make the case. I just seem to land on a 60k investment for less truck. Feels like a 10k investment to rejuvenate the 80 is a better deal.
My preference is sticking with the old. Been seeing warranty issues online re: transmissions and hybrid systems for the turbo/hybrid 4 bangers... really alarming warranty issues for very low milage Toyota vehicles. I've owned an FJ40 an FJ55, now have a 5th Gen 4Runner with 135k miles. The FJ's were unstable, heavy duty beasts off road but def heavy, under powered for freeway hills, and tended to overheat. 5th Gen 4Runner does everything Brad talks about in this video, pretty hard trails, bigger tank and better gas milage than the turbo/hybrid 4 banger, very comfortable and predictable on the freeway for a high clearance/low range 4x4 AND proven track record for reliability all with AC, ABS disc brakes, and 8 speaker surround sound and power windows/door locks. I don't ever see giving up on the 4.0 V6 for a turbo/hybrid 4 banger.

No new car is an "investment" unless you're keeping it for at least 25+ years and keeping it low miles & good condition, so that you can sell it for more as a collectible.
If you want a newer Land Cruiser & you're worried about money, buy one that's only a few years old, so it has had the depreciation hit already.

My 2022 supercharged TRD Pro 4 Runner with 33" got 13 mpg if I was lucky and my 2024 LC FE gets 18-21 mpg with similar power output.
I just got a Land Cruiser and going from my work to home in stop and go traffic through the city my average was 24.9 MPG. Pretty impressed and my average in the 3g Tacoma on 33's was 16.

I'm appreciative of you taking the time to make this video. Put whatever tires on you want. Wide tires dig the hole faster than narrow tires. For decades, service trucks intended for off road use (telephone company, railroad) always wore very narrow tires.
tested 24mpg on the freeway from stock land cruiser 250 series. If you are putting bigger tires, 20mpg would be on a good day.

LRA makes extended fuel tanks for the 200 series (up to 40 gallons), best to check if they’re coming with something for the 250. For bumpers check with Dissent Offroad and Slee. Camburg arm looks like a uniball, not a ball joint.

This makes me appreciate my 60 series even more. It feels so good to row through the gears. Shifting in to 4wd doesn't come with anxiety that it may not engage. The only circuit board is for the AC.
It's an AWD all 4 wheels are pulling at all times, maybe your talking about the low range gearbox? Either way look for asian off road videos they will change your mind in offroaders

I have an LC at around 4K miles too and I get 22MPG consistently. When I come off a highway trip, I see 24MPG+ (stock 20" tires) on the trip. 13MPG, even with the heavy tires, is really surprising.
i get 24-20mpg daily in my '18 NA 2.7 tacoma...33" tires, steel bumpers, winch, etc...i expected way more from these new turbo computer cars, seriously sounds like a huge scam.

In general, the complexity of vehicles over the years have meant simpler ownership with way more mileage between service intervals and longer life.

I have about 2,400 miles on mine and these are valid criticisms. I really do also enjoy the drive, as it's my daily driver as well as fun weekend vehicle. I do think some of the issues with some of the audible warnings and the sway bar disconnect reset could be updated with software, but I'm also not holding my breath for that to happen.
For what it's worth, I have the Wescott full size roof rack and it is very quiet even at highway speeds.

Just a quick note on the firearm safe location... You cannot access it without opening the door. This may be something to consider, despite how amazing it looks in the current configuration. If you are inside your vehicle and the threat is outside, you are unarmed,. Something to consider.
That is why he said the firearms is typically carried on his person. The safe is only for situation where it needs to be stored/locked away; not readily handy. I get your point on accessibility, but for how he describes his use, seems like it will rarely be in the safe, so the access isn't much of an impact.

Brad, we have had a 4x4 sprinter for close to 4 years now and because of your channel, my wife and I added/bought a jeep wrangler and absolutely love it so far as we do the sprinter . Would love to have that conversation on self protection.
My 2004 Touareg has a V8 and adjustable air suspension. Goes up and back down for handling or off road. 205,000 miles. And a 28 gallon gas tank. As well as 6 piston front brake calipers. Not one small chip after 20 years aerodynamic thoughts.

I agree. Bought my 22PW and was looking forward to some great mods from Brad. The first thing I saw was the notice of no truck campers due to load capacity. No deal breaker. Installed Decked drawers and maybe should have gotten the cargo glide instead as I carry most of my gear in action packers. Been doing that for decades.

You are in a transition phase from Jeep to Toyota LC. I started with Jeeps for a decade & half. Remember looking down at others, until after seven years break from offroading my mechanic friend (Jeeps only) suggested I buy a Toyota LC. Skeptic at first, started revealing the advantages in the past 4 years. Especially, maintainance, reliability comfort. Performance is head to head with a slight advantage to the Jeep due to wide options of upgrades. Every offroad club here is fully aware of "You go offroading in a Jeep but come back home in a Land Cruiser". It certainly proved for me. I am sure it will for you. Enjoy.

my fuel economy went up 20% when I got closer to 10k miles. I break in vehicles really well and drive conservatively. I've also serviced it 3 times in the first 13k miles

I was shocked when you bought the Land Cruiser. Twenty minutes at the local dealership with a tape measure had me running for the exits, and the Bronco's history of broken steering racks convinced me that expensive upgrades meant to fix the drawbacks baked into independent suspension are a dog chasing its tail, if off-roading is your primary mission. Also sympathetic to the issues with all the Nanny Alarms: We have the same issue with my wife's Platinum trim Toyota Highlander. Always a relief to climb back into my 2019 JLU Rubicon. Thanks for taking the bullet for the rest of us with the Land Cruiser.
@@LaddGardner4 I think the land cruiser along with the Bronco are meant for the weekend warriors along with maybe one or two big trips a year. Yes, Jeep is better at rock crawling, but all these very capable vehicles all have their drawbacks. It gets expensive when people modify their vehicles outside of the engineer's intent or parameters. The steering rack was never an issue with the Bronco until people started to put bigger tires on them and didn't consider the other point of failures along that system.

@@husker_nation Yup, exactly, it's the compromise I'm happy to live with in order to get a more comfortable ride. I've had my "stock" Bronco in Moab and wheeled all of the 6-7 rated trails with no problems. My only mod to the steering rack are some sleeves for the tie rods. Ford has addressed that issue and now you get an upgraded steering rack with the Sasquatch package (the equivalent of the Jeep Rubicon xtreme package). I think that comparing a stock Bronco's capabilities to a modified Jeep isn't fair anyway. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the SAS Bronco are pretty much the same, capability wise. I certainly wouldn't take a stock Jeep on anything more difficult than what I take my Bronco on. But when you compare the stock Bronco to a Jeep with 40's and one-tons I think that's a bit unfair.

This was just from what I’ve read on forums from many years ago. It was being alone with my wife, off-road and camping that originally prompted me to get into firearms many years ago. Brad, for the windshield, I would look to your local tint shops to see if they have ExoShield in stock. As soon as I got my Bronco, I went straight there and got it installed. It only costs about $200 here in Las Vegas (and I think about $20 for labor). Wasn’t too bad, and I’ve been off roading since last year and it’s definitely SAVED me some money threefold!

Thanks as always Brad. I have 30,000 miles on the Jeep JT and haven't had a crack in the standard windshield (non-gorilla glass). This includes a 5000+ miles loop earlier this year from SC thru Colorado, Moab, UT, and back down thru AZ, NM, TX, etc.
Yes, I think an episode on firearm carry would be good. I am also retired ex-military combat vet and carry for protection. If you take the CCP class, then they go over state to state agreements in the training and is easy enough to look up, but the rules can be complicated. When I travelled from SC to out West or anywhere out of state I had to research the laws and where my SC CCP was recognized. Consider bringing on an attorney advisor for the show.
I did have a situation back in the mid-90's in the Wyoming backcountry where it was necessary to ensure an aggressive party of several men to our off-grid campsite was made aware of our possession and ability to use such firearms. Our intervention allowed a nice family in the adjacent campground with small children to escape. We unfortunately had to displace from a great trout stream to an alternate location for the night in case they returned. So only one issue over all the years, and like I explain to my wife most people out in these places are regular good folks like us. But, you never know and should always be prepared to protect yourself, your family, and others. Those of us with military/LE other other defensive experience should be out there and carrying to protect our society as support to our current LE.

If you still have that roof rack that makes a ton of noise, you could try adding a wind deflector to the front of it. I’m not sure how much it would reduce the noise, but I imagine it would be worth trying.

Were you fed paint chips as a child? Lifting a vehicle most certainty gives more ground clearance. Did you think when adding a 1.75 or 3.0 lift that the the bottom of the chassis would just remain the same height after the lift? LMFAO
Hi Brad. Consider using the Rid’g Mega off-road hitch mount. It is a Class IV hitch rating. It mounts into your factory hitch and offers a pass through system and it can carry up to a 37”.
I can already see the little itch to sell this vehicle.

FWIW, took my new out of the box 5th gen 4Runner out for it's first off road trip and a rock hit and cracked the windshield at 666 miles on the ODO. I feel your pain!
I love my 200… but these new 250s just miss the mark. No split tailgate and a hybrid with poor fuel economy and an even SMALLER tank? It looks cool (even better in person) but there’s just too many compromises.

Hello I wonder if your making this something it shouldn’t be at all.
It’s a comfortable 4x4 designed for wealthy farmers, would be the comment when comes too the UK 🇬🇧.
It’s not that sort of vehicle really too be altering, what you have done so far looks brilliant and useful more maybe just too much.
All the nice interior and stuff isnt really tough enough for messing about off road, that’s my thoughts on it.
Looks ace with the styling now, wonder if some nice discrete bumper lights would be cool though.

When you go to bigger tires, try 265/85R17. They aren't as wide, but are about a 35". It may fit better under the batteries.
Nothing beats a Diesel engine. I'm getting 22mpg on my Ecodiesel Gladiator Rubicon.

I'm glad I didn't buy one of these or the GX 550.
That fuel economy is abysmal, then throw in the 18 gallon tank. OUCH. That is not livable for me. I've had many rigs in the past 20 years, including the GX 460, which I absolutely loved.
The second he lifts this thing I bet he gets 12 mpg on that 18 gallon tank.
The spare tire is a big problem. The GX 460 could fit a 33, or an aired down and ratch-strapped 34.
I see him ditching this in 6 months.
GX460 or LX570 would have been the better choice here. This will be traded in before the end of 2025.
I haven’t gone below 21mpg on my LC250… sounds like his issue is a driver issue not a car issue..

Hey Brad, I have a buddy with a 2 DR Bronco with the smaller gas tank. He fabricated a 9 gallon secondary tank that runs tandem with the main tank. It has really worked out well for extended Highway and off-road travels. Once you figure out your rear bumper and tire carrier set up, you should look into a similar system for your newly opened up space. Even though I am a Bronco guy I have loved and followed your TH-cam channel for years. See you out on the trails Brother!
Be careful - in some areas that wouldn't be legal. There are a number of both federal and state laws about how you can carry extra gasoline. That's the reason most of the big aux tank companies are really only going for the diesel market. With Brad in CA, any sort of plumbed-in extra tankage could cause issues with smog testing. Definitely one of those things you need to do your research on prior to spending the money.
A BMW X5 has the exact same ground clearance, so yeah.
BMW x5 and Toyota Land Cruiser are two completely different purpose built vehicles.

Maybe some info about what you had to go through to get your CCW in California. I moved to Nevada in retirement and love it.
16 hour training. And like $300. And not live in LA county, or the Bay Area.
It's more then that. In Ca all CCWs go through the sheriff's department of wherever you live. You have to apply and then typically there's a wait list anywhere from 3 to 6 months. You will then be interviewed by the department and have to have a good cause for why you want to carry among other questions. You also have to state the firearm you will carry and they will note the serial number the limit was 5 when I did it. Once approved then you have to do the training and what not. And like he said it's almost impossible in LA or bat area unless you have connections or are very wealthy. Orange County and Riverside are the easiest socal places to get it. They used to also do a home visit to see if you actually lived in the county but they stopped that now

Good cause is not a thing anymore. It’s just good character, meaning no violent crimes, no domestic violence, lots of small run ins, etc.
Most counties are pretty quick now as demand as lowered as most people who wants one already has one.

Like many of us, carrying firearms is must for my protection when off-grid camping /off-roading with wife and kids. Most of time, it with me (CCW) in person, however, like Trailrecon, I also have steel safe box bolted on vehicle. CCW and regular training help me more confident in the wild and chaos society today. Yes. It’s our 2A rights. I love people and nature…and no harm to even a little insect.

Well, I get 12-14 mpg even towing our patriot x3 in the highway and we have a 2011 Land Cruiser 200 on 35/12.5s with 4.88 gears but with the long range America aux fuel tank it’s not a problem. We have plans to add a 4Runner trailhunter to the garage, you can’t replace the 200 but it’s built for overlanding with the full kitchen slid out.
A 4 cylinder 4wd SUV with tons of interior cloth and plastics for $65,000? Please tell me you are smarter than this.
Turbo 4 banger with 2 electric motors ad the FE's do not have cloth interiors. Better than any Rover or Jeep that have to see the dealer for new transmissions at 60K miles LOL

Land Cruisers always had a spare mounted like that. Long before the hybrids were around. It is a traditional weakness of Land Cruisers.

You make great points about the issues with the Land Cruiser. I also have been very disappointed with the fuel economy.
For the windshield see if gorilla glass has you covered. Its the strongest glass available for consumers.
It doesn’t. It just cost more. People are replacing the gorilla glass (after they broke) on their wranglers with regular glass.

I think I heard about this on a channel, something Ozark maybe Ozark Overlanding. They have gladiators. This said, I have a Sport (so regular glass) and in 10,000 miles my windshield is still ok but I wheel alone so I don’t follow others on trails.
"Those" conversations are always good. Personal protection is a reality. Silencing those conversations is ridiculous. Even if people don't want to carry, there are alternatives and should be discussed.

Got a rock chip on my windshield within the first 6 weeks as well. Gets tiring at 60 bucks a pop, but better than the 1400 the dealer would want to replace the whole thing. Overall a great vehicle.
Maybe a second channel is in order. I do think the offroad crowd is generally supportive of firearms. But like you said youtube has historically imposed some severe restrictions on firearms related channels.
Yeah. Mixing that stuff into this channel might be a quick way to demonetization of the channel. Maybe not directly but through the black box of the algorithm.
My 2021 Jeep windshield broke after about 9,000 miles in three years, installed the thickest windshield protector I could find over the new windshield and it has survived a couple of hits up to now so I'm happy with it.
I have a 2019. New windshield every year except this one but there's still 3 months left 🤞
so a 75 thousand dollar LC needs 10k plus in mods to convert from Mall Cruiser lol

Sadly, this is too common everywhere. Other than the Wrangler (at least in the US) and to a lesser extent the Bronco there just aren't many offroad capable stock vehicles.

I would like to discuss carrying. I have Texas License to Carry. There are recipriocity states but there are also restricted areas even with a carry license. It can get confusing.
