It's more then that. In Ca all CCWs go through the sheriff's department of wherever you live. You have to apply and then typically there's a wait list anywhere from 3 to 6 months. You will then be interviewed by the department and have to have a good cause for why you want to carry among other questions. You also have to state the firearm you will carry and they will note the serial number the limit was 5 when I did it. Once approved then you have to do the training and what not. And like he said it's almost impossible in LA or bat area unless you have connections or are very wealthy. Orange County and Riverside are the easiest socal places to get it. They used to also do a home visit to see if you actually lived in the county but they stopped that now

Falling for tropes, like a lot of other guys. It’s actually a safety issue. After you lower the ground pressure so much with the wider tires, your performance on water, snow and ice suffers to an extreme degree. As for the broken windshield, I have a 1958 and have the same fears. A lot of them can be resolved in 2 ways. Drive like a nut and be in front. OR on the cruise control turn on the max distance and stay well behind. I’ve got 8700 on mine and so far not even a kiss. Though I know it’s coming.

All I can think is they've never actually been snow wheeling where there simply is no bottom. I wheel mostly in the Sierra where 'bottom' might be 10 feet down and the snow itself isn't that light/dry fluff you can push aside like water. No, it would rip a plastic factory bumper right off if you tried to push several feet of it around. And most modern vehicles are extremely heavy hence needing all the floatation they can get. That said, idk that I'd put a wider tire on that particular platform. It will never be a hard core wheeler just because of what it is. As a 'soft roader' or 'overlander' it should be pretty good, but it's easy to over-build trying to make it into something it's just not and start hurting other aspects of it's performance such as was mentioned above like the already poor fuel economy and component longevity. (the beef may be handled with the suspension upgrades but the hit from larger/heavier tires can't be avoided).
Gotta know the laws of where you are from, where you are going, and where you’re passing through. Also, state vs federal land and national parks may all have different laws. It can be a pain.
@backwoodstherapy Many western states are Constitutional Carry states that supercedes any permit issues. Also, carrying on BLM land is no issue and neither is carrying in National Parks. Provided you are following the state laws in those states and do not carry inside federal buildings in National Parks or other federal lands.
Also important is how to defend from attacking wildlife. There's lots of information on bears but big cats, rutting ungulates and in my area, wild piggies are a problem. I carry bear spray but wonder about the utility of a handgun (as a backup to bear spray).
Maybe a second channel is in order. I do think the offroad crowd is generally supportive of firearms. But like you said youtube has historically imposed some severe restrictions on firearms related channels.

I was shocked when you bought the Land Cruiser. Twenty minutes at the local dealership with a tape measure had me running for the exits, and the Bronco's history of broken steering racks convinced me that expensive upgrades meant to fix the drawbacks baked into independent suspension are a dog chasing its tail, if off-roading is your primary mission. Also sympathetic to the issues with all the Nanny Alarms: We have the same issue with my wife's Platinum trim Toyota Highlander. Always a relief to climb back into my 2019 JLU Rubicon. Thanks for taking the bullet for the rest of us with the Land Cruiser.

Yes, Jeep is better at rock crawling, but all these very capable vehicles all have their drawbacks. It gets expensive when people modify their vehicles outside of the engineer's intent or parameters. The steering rack was never an issue with the Bronco until people started to put bigger tires on them and didn't consider the other point of failures along that system.
That range sounds terrible. My 2021 4runner (lifted with oversized K02 AND with a supercharger added) still get's 16mpg around town and 18mpg on the freeway.

Yeah, it has less ground clearance than my stock Jeep Liberty (8.7in vs 9.6in). That really turned me off of getting one as I would want to wheel it stock like I wheel my stock Jeeps.

Well, I get 12-14 mpg even towing our patriot x3 in the highway and we have a 2011 Land Cruiser 200 on 35/12.5s with 4.88 gears but with the long range America aux fuel tank it’s not a problem. We have plans to add a 4Runner trailhunter to the garage, you can’t replace the 200 but it’s built for overlanding with the full kitchen slid out.
I've loved your videos is the past, and you are making some interesting choices with the Sprinter/MB van and now the Toyota. I'm just not convinced that a turbo/hybrid/4 is going to go the distance, especially towing your beautiful patriot trailer. Time will tell...
I was getting about 26 MPG on the tanks so far mostly city on my eco-diesel gladiator Rubicon. I did see 28 to 30 on the open highway when the cruise to 65 miles an hour.
Brad, for the windshield, I would look to your local tint shops to see if they have ExoShield in stock. As soon as I got my Bronco, I went straight there and got it installed. It only costs about $200 here in Las Vegas (and I think about $20 for labor). Wasn’t too bad, and I’ve been off roading since last year and it’s definitely SAVED me some money threefold!

Often thought about taking a firearm out for added security but I don't have CCW and CA laws are confusing. When and where you can have them, how you transport them, what's the protocols at the border check points, etc. It would be a good topic that unfortunately doesn't get much coverage for reasons you stated.
LRA makes extended fuel tanks for the 200 series (up to 40 gallons), best to check if they’re coming with something for the 250. For bumpers check with Dissent Offroad and Slee. Camburg arm looks like a uniball, not a ball joint.
I would like to see a video about carrying a firearm while on the trail. Specifically where you keep your firearm while driving for extended periods of time, carrying in the appendix isn’t comfortable (for me) while driving for long periods. I have tried holsters that clip to the center console, but have come detached on bouncy trails. Also having a conversation about what caliber is most effective for large animals, red dots or iron sights, hollow point, etc. Would be good for many to know.

@@donhappel9566 Yes the F150 is available here and very popular. Many owners have switched off this Landcruiser for an F150. As I said every test between this new Landcruiser and the old Nissan Patrol, has favoured the Patrol. For me, I would prefer the Ford or the Nissan to this poor Landcruiser.

The spare has nothing to do with the battery. It’s the same on a 4runner. You can put it on a tire carrier. However, it’s far less of an issue once you lift it.
I haven’t seen your noisy roof rack, but maybe try adding duct tape to certain areas to see what makes it quieter, then weld in some thin panels in place of the tape. Just an option if you otherwise like that rack.
In San Diego county, to avoid rock hits, you really need to stay in the 2 fastest lanes. So many rocks are in the first two slow lanes due to big trucks dropping stones. Fuel economy will be lower, but your windshield will have less hits.
Hey Brad, so glad to see you address this topic on your channel. I’ve often wondered if you carried a firearm for personal protection. Please continue to provide more information on this important topic. When we are remote camping we’re our only option for self defense.
It just plain takes a certain amount of fuel to move something shaped like a barn down the highway. Lift and bigger tires make it worse in a hurry. It doesn't matter what fancy drivetrain it has. It takes "X" amount of fuel to move it through the air.
That thing looks amazing. I wonder if it’s possible to put an auxiliary fuel tank with a skid plate where the spare tire is and install a rear bumper with a tire carrier?

I really like your analysis of the pros and cons you discovered and your likes and dislikes, I'm a little bit leery of taking a vehicle that doesn't seem quite ready for prime time and trying to make a Jeep out of it but what the heck go for it, what I really like is the built-in brake controller, hey Jeep are you watching this? how about at least offering it as an option?
If you relocate the spare to the back you might consider buying a narrow rim of the same diameter with a narrow tire to replace it underneath so you don’t lose the rear end crash engineering integrity.
My 2021 Jeep windshield broke after about 9,000 miles in three years, installed the thickest windshield protector I could find over the new windshield and it has survived a couple of hits up to now so I'm happy with it.
Great video and from my understanding if you want the most out of that front suspension look at installing the Tacoma front cv axle shafts. They allow more articulation then the factory Land Cruiser axles.

tested 24mpg on the freeway from stock land cruiser 250 series. If you are putting bigger tires, 20mpg would be on a good day.

It doesn't get good fuel economy, here's 6 ways to make that worse, nice. As a note I get 23 mpg in my 2010 Prado with a Stock 40 Gallon tank

For the windshield see if gorilla glass has you covered. Its the strongest glass available for consumers.

I know you chose the LC over the grenadier. Do you have any second thoughts about it after spending some money on the LC?
No Toyota truck based platform is ever going to get good fuel mileage. It’s part of the reliability. You want good fuel mileage go buy a ford or GM.
All the old Land Cruiser Prados in Australia came with a rear tyre mount . On the actual sideways opening door or a separate frame.

The spare has nothing to do with the battery. It’s the same on a 4runner. You can put it on a tire carrier. However, it’s far less of an issue once you lift it.

I haven’t seen your noisy roof rack, but maybe try adding duct tape to certain areas to see what makes it quieter, then weld in some thin panels in place of the tape. Just an option if you otherwise like that rack.
CBI now has a southern California store so you should visit them for a few upgrades.
In San Diego county, to avoid rock hits, you really need to stay in the 2 fastest lanes. So many rocks are in the first two slow lanes due to big trucks dropping stones. Fuel economy will be lower, but your windshield will have less hits.

It just plain takes a certain amount of fuel to move something shaped like a barn down the highway. Lift and bigger tires make it worse in a hurry. It doesn't matter what fancy drivetrain it has. It takes "X" amount of fuel to move it through the air.
That thing looks amazing. I wonder if it’s possible to put an auxiliary fuel tank with a skid plate where the spare tire is and install a rear bumper with a tire carrier?
Your larger tires are affecting the calculation of your mpg
What about a RiGd hitch mounted tire carrier with a table and jerry can holder??

You can look into the hitch tire mount. They're pricy but they work.
I really like your analysis of the pros and cons you discovered and your likes and dislikes, I'm a little bit leery of taking a vehicle that doesn't seem quite ready for prime time and trying to make a Jeep out of it but what the heck go for it, what I really like is the built-in brake controller, hey Jeep are you watching this? how about at least offering it as an option?
If you relocate the spare to the back you might consider buying a narrow rim of the same diameter with a narrow tire to replace it underneath so you don’t lose the rear end crash engineering integrity.
My 2021 Jeep windshield broke after about 9,000 miles in three years, installed the thickest windshield protector I could find over the new windshield and it has survived a couple of hits up to now so I'm happy with it.

It's a Prado. Its not meant for actual off-roading. More for occasional fire trails, camp grounds and gravel/rough unsealed roads.
Great video and from my understanding if you want the most out of that front suspension look at installing the Tacoma front cv axle shafts. They allow more articulation then the factory Land Cruiser axles.
