Dr. Barnard, you've changed my life! *not exaggerating* I've learned a lot about a healthy vegan whole-food diet by watching your content. Thank you! ❤️💙❤️💙❤️
I am anaphylactic allergic to soy. I’m vegan and was eating tons, including processed, when I started breaking out in hives and having facial, mouth and hand swelling snd trouble breathing. It was months before we discovered soy was the culprit. I think it’s healthy if you don’t eat it in excess, eat organic and as unprocessed as possible.
There are always some people who are allergic or intolerant to any foods. Too bad it took a while for you to find it but at least you know to avoid it now.
every time, I eat soy. i feel so terrible. i have hypothyroidism. i some experiments on my self. i put together in one meal different products from soy and in 2 minutes i feel like i was going to die.
The only time soy caused issues for me (acne and no periods for years) was when I was WAY overdosing on it...especially isolated soy protein processed stuff. I was eating concentrated soy protein numerous times per day.
The problem is not the soy. The problem is that you choosed to eat processed soy. This is the same like the fruits. If you eat the whole fruit it is perfect for your body but if you extract the sugar from the fruit and you eat this sugar you'll have problem. So do not extract the protein from the soy eat the soy only whole. Like tofu tempeh etc
@@MrFox-db5xw But it's never the soy itself that the general public wants to consume. It's always the processed products that contain soy / soy protein in isolated forms that are on high demand. I don't remember a single time I craved soy beans to be honest. So if processed soy is no good, then I'd simply pass. I'm neither vegan nor from Far East.
@@MrBreakingbad edamame is the least processed form of soy, and it’s quite tasty , and so it tempeh, which is not highly processed. It’s all about marketing to make the general public want to consume those products.
Gmo soy will cause issues too. I remember early turn of the century gmo soy was prevalent in North America. It wasn't until 5 years in that I started to see non-gmo soy. And even then it took me a couple years after introduction until I myself made the switch.
Problem is most soy in USA is gmo. Also a lot of processed food has soy and time after time studies show that vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, is very very bad. This doctor didn’t seem to touch base on that.
all oil isn’t good for your health due to the processing most or all nutritional value is removed, always stick to whole foods in there most natural form possible. I have removed all oil from my diet and replaced with nuts and seeds. Oil is empty calories. Hope this helps and I think I’m really late to this haha

Ikr? The Chinese have been eating soy for 1000's of years. The commune, The Farm in Tennessee, an intentional community there, & they used soy in various. Its a great addition to the diet due t9 its high quality protein BC it contains all of the essential amino acids & is a good protein source. This diet was also used with good results on pregnant women, children, & well everyone who uses the soy diet.
There are too many special interests, politics, and agendas involved in nutrition, diet and health advice. It is very unfortunate and following bad recommendations in order to avoid suffering may lead to the very suffering a person was trying to avoid and was probably not at risk for to begin with.
Indeed, I’ve always felt that the reports of soy being “unhealthy” were politically motivated. Meat production is a big industry, with lobbying clout. People eating more soy products as a replacement for animal products definitely cuts into their profits. Soy is not the only source of vegetarian protein, but as Dr Barnard says, it is very versatile.
Special interest groups.. Well that's a good point. However I struggle to understand how the vegan community tends to think that it's the meat industry that is all evil, and is "the special interest group". Do you honestly believe that the veggie industry is lead by Robin Hood?
@@MrBreakingbad No, I don’t think any of them are saints. I think they are all in it for the money. It’s just that meat dairy and eggs receive huge subsidies from the government and have lobbying clout and public relations campaigns. They want people to keep consuming their products in spite of scientific studies showing the health concerns, so I consider them equivalent to the tobacco industry. Plus they rely on desensitization of people to the suffering of animals. It’s just a different level of greed than from someone who grows vegetables. Plus I know Dr Neal Barnard, I’ve worked with him in the past, and I know that he does not take any money from special interest groups.
Thankyou for this video, it's disturbing the number of 'experts' on utube telling people to get off Soy, even some doctors with huge followings and pushing their own over simplified Fads. Your opinion is supported by Scientists with decades of experience ( Dr William Li) working in Labs analyzing foods who not only have proven that Soy being harmful is a long held myth but also it's anti cancer benefits are well documented.
Wow, awesome video. I loved the info of course, but the b-roll, the jump cut interrupts and the visuals were top notch. I feel you should give credit to your video editor or team in the description. And, I would love to learn from them, do they have a channel? Kudos!

I always loved tofu until a friend scared me off it, telling me about bread cancer. Then I realized how people in Japan have soy almost every day and if soy is bad how come they have a high number of people living well into their 90s. I started enjoying tofu again after that and happy this video just validated my belief.
To eat or not eat soy... personal choice. However, I choose to avoid, given ultra high % of crop are GMO and covered in glyphosate . Disappointed that this issue not even mentioned.
Thank you for debunking a lot of what I hear almost daily as I drink Soya milk and so does my teenage daughter. We hear myths that it will mess up my menopausal symptoms right now and stop my daughter from maturing lol....I think people see one article and run with it and don't get the actual facts. I am so glad I don't have to give up my favourite milk 😃
My question is... Soy is a trillion dollar industry. Wouldn't these people stand everything to gain by astroturfing and lying so they don't lose their money???? People back in the day were told that radium is good and cigarettes were healthy!!!! People were told that eating 12 servings of carbohydrates a day was healthy! Ect... Corporations lie constantly and make their own studies that get pushed.
I'm so glad this is getting addressed again because there are some reasonably high profile Drs who still think that phytoestrogens are dangerous. Can you keep bringing more science to the table regarding soy. Lastly, is their any health difference between fermented and unfermented soy? Please address this too. Thank you.
Dr. Barnard, are there any soy products that you would advise men, women or young children not to consume? Or possibly any soy products that shouldn't be overindulged on a regular basis. And yes, I understand that nothing should be overindulged. I'm merely curious as to whether any soy products could become detrimental over time if overindulged regularly. Thank you for your time and diligence!
Actually anything overeaten will be detrimental, even it's a good healthy food. But give the soy milk a miss. It's not even more easily digested than milk. It's a bean, ffs. Ever eaten a whole lotta beans at once? How'd that work out for you?
Thanks again Dr.Barnard, A voice of reason in the sea of confusion and misleading information. I use Macro certified organic soy in New Zealand (Australian made). Only C.O ingredients and not GMO. My advice look for similar in your part of the world.

Most of people forget that we are genetically different, so we cannot demonize this kind of food without considering all the other (junk)food people usually consume! I am so happy we are not alone :-)
I remember back in the early 80’s when soy products were advised for women in menopause because the phytoestrogen’s helped with their hormones. What’s changed???
In that study where women who at soy had a 23% less chance of getting breast cancer, could it possibly be that they are just more health conscious? What are the diets of the non soy eaters like?
@Trolling Police no because the phytoestrogens in soy bind to the beta receptor. You have to be concerned with the phytoestrogens in beer which has the opposite effect because it binds to the alpha receptor. That's why those issues are common with beer drinkers.
Personally I have bought, tried and completed drinking powdered soy milk (good quality brands) over the course of several months each time at 2 or 3 different occasions. I notice the feelings of sharpness where my kidneys are and it stayed throughout the course of the milk. Why I pressed on and tried to finished those cans I don't know. Maybe, I believed it was good for me. Anyway, the feelings of sharpness disappeared once I finished the course. As I am lactose-intolerant, I just had to try again after gaps of a year. Again the sharpness returned while I continued the drink. Eventually, I just stopped buying and drinking powdered soya milk. I do have soya products in my meals but only in fermented forms, occasionally with dried soya tofu or steam tofu dishes. Sometimes soya as a dessert. The idea of it as a daily health supplement is false (maybe even dangerous) in my opinion. I do enjoy eating soya the way I am doing now but have no need for such so-called soya supplements given that I have enough fruits and vegetables on top of regular kefir/yoghurt and cheese.
At least you were smart enough to work out that cheese has almost no lactose in it. Such a common misconception about that. As for lactose intolerance, have you tried taking probiotics regularly? I suggest the high dose acidophilus+ quality brands that come in the fridge.
I’ve eaten plants only for over 30 yrs (low-fat) and introduced tofu last year as the base for daily salad dressing. The past several months now for the first time in my life (im 45) I have PMS symptoms, the only thing I’ve changed in my diet is adding tofu so I’m really thinking there’s a connection there. Now, for two weeks out of every month before my period my breast get sore and I hold water (edema). i’m cutting out the tofu to see if it’s the cause.
Some people are allergic or sensitive to soy so maybe it isn't for you. Well, thank goodness there are plenty of other things to have in the plant world.

Several years ago "nutritionist" soy-shamed me. Like a dummy I listened to him and stopped eating soy for several years. Now I'm back on track with a health coach and loving my tofu scrambles. It feels like home! :)
The issue isn’t health, someone can have their biochemistry changed and still be healthy 1) we know for a fact that giving young mammals so overtime will change the size and function of the genitals. 2) we know that doctors tell women going through IVF not to eat soy because isoflavins will affect the outcome. we know postmenopausal women eat soy for benefits. Soy definitely affects human biochemistry in a significant way. 3) Every study measuring the effect of soy on men is always geared toward adults and their testosterone levels or overall health. That was never the problem. Changes in the body we don’t want is what we are concerned about. Everyone is pretending for some reason human males are the only exception to changes in biochemistry from soy.
Hi ! Could you put the sources you are using in the description ? Always nice to have a few links if someone wants to dig a little bit further (Plus everything cannot be covered in just 3 minutes) Thank you :)
I needed that. I heard that with eating soy my hormonal belly will not go away. And I was wondering what could be bad about soy. And I’m glad I can keep on consuming it.
Thank you so much for this information Dr. I too believed that soy was bad for you, especially for women. I am in peri menopause and am consuming more soy and it’s been helping me with my hot flashes and I am feeling so much better. May be a coincidence, but, I’ll take it. I’ve been watching Dr Taylor’s (menopause Barbie) videos here on TH-cam and she also debunks the soy misconceptions. Blessings 😊
There was another interview with dr Barnard when maybe it was you? Who told him soy was improving hot flashes dramatically, he said they tested and proved that it is amazing for women and hot flashes.
Avoiding meat and saturated fat is decremental, not a plus. I worked in the feed industry, and the antinutrients in soy are decremental for animals. Therefore, they throw the beans in extruders or add enzymes to the feed to make it acceptable for animal consumption. In Asia they solved it by fermenting soy. For me, it is a mystery why this knowledge is not used in the western human food industry. It looks like we care more for farm animals than ourselves.
hi Dr Neal, can you please do review how vitamins affect our body and hormones? because everytime i take vitamin daily, i dont get my period even drinking natural lemon water or garlic juice. and everytime i checked to obygyn, they told me i have pcos. but when i stop taking vitamin, i get my period normally. first i didnt notice, untill it happened few times within few years. they told me vitamins wont affect period at all. but so far i have never taken any pcos medicine nor go on any diet. as long as i dont take vit daily, i dont get any problem at all with my period. i hope you could help and educate other people who prob have same issue like me. thank you :)
What about for growing boys? If raised by a vegetarian past the age of 12, and getting more tofu than ever getting meat from the ages of 12-19, may that stunt a boy's hormonal development?

Thank you for getting the truth of this information out there! People like you are invaluable! You remind me of myself telling people uncomfortable truths
I just don’t understand anymore. I don’t know who to believe anymore. I see videos that say Soy is bad for you in more ways than one but I’m also seeing videos saying the complete opposite.
@@MS45636 no, I mean that Tofu, Tempeh and Miso are great. I know I heard him talk about soy isolate as being unsafe. Like the stuff you find in protein bars etc....because they are parts of the whole soy. That is my understanding. Tempeh , Tofu and Miso are great! :)
Soy has been part of Asian cuisine for centuries. Never heard of a problem there. Maybe it has something to do with what your ancestors ate that affect what you can or cannot eat. There is a large proportion of Asians who are lactose intolerant, a problem that is less common in non-Asian populations. That is probably because until quite recently (about 50 years ago), Asians did not consumed diary products.
Most people to don not interact with Soy in any manner discussed in this video! Most people interact with soy as an oil. "To produce soybean oil, the soybeans are cracked, adjusted for moisture content, heated to between 60 and 88 °C (140-190 °F), rolled into flakes, and solvent-extracted with hexanes. The oil is then refined, blended for different applications, and sometimes hydrogenated. Soybean oils, both liquid and partially hydrogenated are sold as "vegetable oil," or are ingredients in a wide variety of processed foods." These compounds are not health soy beans but foreign materials in the body. Understand that if they can make a tire out of it, then the more processed it is the less you should put in your body.
I have been vegan for several years, enjoy tofu and such, but was recently diagnosed with endometriosis and had an ovary removed, at 29. That was a week ago. I try to approach my health in a very holistic manner so was wondering if my diet contributed to that. There does seem to be some consensus on certain foods being bad for endometriosis: gluten, meat and dairy, inflammatory foods but I haven't found any clear consensus on soy products. Does anyone know if there is any unbiased research that shows that soy increases your risk of endometriosis? Right now I'm not sure what to eat, I'm so scared I'm going to do more damage. A lot of people are questioning whether it was my vegan diet :(
From the Mayo Clinic… Risk factors Several factors place you at greater risk of developing endometriosis, such as: Never giving birth Starting your period at an early age Going through menopause at an older age Short menstrual cycles - for instance, less than 27 days Heavy menstrual periods that last longer than seven days Having higher levels of estrogen in your body or a greater lifetime exposure to estrogen your body produces Low body mass index One or more relatives (mother, aunt or sister) with endometriosis Any medical condition that prevents the passage of blood from the body during menstrual periods Disorders of the reproductive tract
A nurse I was working with said her physician told her the following. “ There are two cures for endometriosis. One is male hormones and the other is getting pregnant “.
Soy has isoflavones which block estrogen receptors, so it actually encourages your body to make MORE ESTROGEN.. this feeds endometriosis.. even though it’s not the cause of it.. endometriosis is likely to be a result of a bacterial infection with immune disease..

OK bot
Soy is no good
Vegan, gross
Vegan is not healthy.
Allergic is different to if it's bad for a person without an allergy
every time, I eat soy. i feel so terrible. i have hypothyroidism. i some experiments on my self. i put together in one meal different products from soy and in 2 minutes i feel like i was going to die.

@@MrBreakingbad No, I don’t think any of them are saints. I think they are all in it for the money.

It’s not adults that take phytoestrogens that concerns me.
It’s the soy in baby formula that concerns us.
1) we know phytoestrogens (in soy) will reduce the size and function of genitals in growing mammals. Experimental data shows this.
2) we know phytoestrogens effect humans, menopausal women benefit form it.
3) we know that drinking VERY large amounts of soy milk in some men will cause physiological changes akin to estrogen.
The idea that this will have no effect on growing male infant genitalia is absurd . Why is everyone ignoring this?

The issue isn’t health, someone can have their biochemistry changed and still be healthy
1) we know for a fact that giving young mammals so overtime will change the size and function of the genitals.

Better off eating soybeans instead of processed junk.
Better off eating soy than meat.
Soy milk is my favorite. I wish soy producers would shout this from the roof top. They need better marketing and a catchy slogan.

From the Mayo Clinic…
Risk factors
Several factors place you at greater risk of developing endometriosis, such as:
Never giving birth
Starting your period at an early age
Going through menopause at an older age
Short menstrual cycles - for instance, less than 27 days
Heavy menstrual periods that last longer than seven days
Having higher levels of estrogen in your body or a greater lifetime exposure to estrogen your body produces
Low body mass index
One or more relatives (mother, aunt or sister) with endometriosis
Any medical condition that prevents the passage of blood from the body during menstrual periods
Disorders of the reproductive tract
A nurse I was working with said her physician told her the following. “ There are two cures for endometriosis. One is male hormones and the other is getting pregnant “.
Soy has isoflavones which block estrogen receptors, so it actually encourages your body to make MORE ESTROGEN..
this feeds endometriosis.. even though it’s not the cause of it.. endometriosis is likely to be a result of a bacterial infection with immune disease..
