I have found that coffee, caffeine, sugar and dairy are the foods to avoid during my period. I definitely need protein during my period, especially with my anemia. Eating whole foods is my best balancer.
I've been coming to this realization lately, gotta cut down on the coffee. I'm wfpb but still drink coffee and lately I feel like I'm bloated 3 weeks out of the month!
I became vegan and my cramps got better. Then I also started exercising daily and my period pain is totally gone. I usually can't even feel that my period started or that I'm on it. It's weird! My exercise is online belly dancing lessons. Lots of fun, and there are many free videos online.
@@anjihc8797 I'm literally trying similar diet changes for my ridiculous endo pain! Going dairy free and sugar free for a month to see if it gets better
I am Hispanic and ever since I started my period at 13 my mom would tell me not drink milk, cheese, avocado for pain , no lemon it cuts your blood and no spicy food for smell. She said a few days before the period and my entire period to stay away. I never believed . Wise information passed down from generations. Ever since I moved out I stop that diet and it true! Recently I’ve had a least one day of very bad period pains. Going back to this advice thank you !
How to explain my terrible menstrual pain? I come from a culture that doesn't consume milk or cheese. Growing up I have never consume cow milk or cheese and yet I have very bad menstrual pain of which I have fainting spells. I consume none of those foods that was listed. I consumed eggs, yes, but very minimal. And we hardly have any meat at all. No fried food too.
I just followed his advice for about two weeks and my cramps were 80% less than usual. After 23 years of monthly pain I can barely believe how simple and liberating this is.
After changing my diet to gluten free, dairy free, mostly sugar free and alcohol free my periods are pain free, lighter and no longer last 8-10 days. I wish I knew to do so years ago. So many missed days of work, school and gatherings due to severe pain and heavy flow. Not one doctor ever mentioned diet. I was thrown on birth control pills instead.
I have coeliac disease and lactose intolerance so I don’t eat gluten or dairy. I very very rarely have alcohol. Sugars are a treat. My periods are still horrifically painful and heavy 14 years after my first period. Glad it worked for you, but it doesn’t work for a lot of women.
@@TheYNirvana I’m sorry to hear that. I know first hand how painful and frustrating that is. It is very common for women to have menstrual and sometimes even fertility issues with celiac disease. I hope there is a solution out there for you 🙏
I wish I'd known this when I was a young woman. I had terrible period pains that would put me in bed for days, doubled up crying. If I stood up to go to the bathroom I would pass out. My periods were so heavy it caused me to feel very depressed as I was so conscious as I was only 11 when my periods started. I hated my youth because of my periods.
I developed hypothyroidism in my early 30’s after having my son, who is now 23. I have a lot of ailments now and I’m convinced it’s because my thyroid is being poorly treated. My dr just gives me thyroxine , which I know is not working as I still feel symptomatic.
Anne, I must have been your twin sister because I too suffered like hell. If I could have turned all that pain and suffering into fuel, I would be a very rich woman today! It was a horror story.
This makes sense. When I first started my period, I didn't have any pain at all. A few years later my family moved to America and I definitely ate a very different diet after we moved, and all of a sudden I was in severe pain during my period for the first time in my life.
Funny, for me it was the other way around. I moved from Switzerland to the U.S and suddenly my cramps stopped :D I hope you are feeling better now and found food which helps your body to relax.
When I went dairy/meat free my periods went from heavy, painful and 7 days long to light and only 3 to 4 days long. Everyone may be different but this 100% worked for me.
It worked for me too after 3 months on plantbase I was so happy I was crying and thanking Jesus Christ for such great wisdom, it didn’t even felt like I was on my period I had to go to check myself, it was the first time I changed less pads in my adult life. But i challenged my self and went back to rave dairy , eggs and meats on my next period it was so bad I stayed home for 2 days. I would schedule vacation about 2 days per month to stay honey, making sure I went to work everyday to build up PTO N VACATION TIMES so I can take off. I’m back on plantbase and it’s for life I want to see if it can shrink my 5 cm fibroids
@@my1stlove130 can I ask what exactly you ate? So you ditched meat, dairy abd eggs? Did you stillt eat seeds and nuts on the plant based diet? Just wanna know for myself.
As a teen my periods were horrible! Cramps would make the skin of my pelvic area burn. However, when I went vegan/vegetarian I barely had cramps! They were so light! Even my periods were lighter. So I agree with what he is saying.
I was vegetarian in highschool. My endometriosis still progressed. I went vegan recently and it did not help with my pain. I limit dairy but it does nothing. Sometimes women just get lucky and have an easy cycle that month.
2 weeks before menstruation, I used to have insomnia and migraines, cramps and feelings of deep sadness, my PCP wanted to prescribe me an antidepressant and I strongly refused, plus hormones... I walked away from his practice and started fasting for 48 hours and for the next few days I only had green smoothies, just kale and lemon, my migraines disappeared and I started sleeping sweetly and peacefully. I started a plant-based lifestyle and I have found healing and a better version of the woman I can be. My menstruation is pain free and I'm stronger than ever. My skin is healthier as well. 🌈☀️
Oh my gosh. This is me. It starts 2 weeks before my period and then by the time the period is gone I have had only one nearly normal week because a week after that the whole thing starts again. I used to be very healthy and a non meat eater, but I lost a lot of weight and incorporated meat back in my diet as I was extremely under weight, and then boom. 3 years later my periods became unbeatable, I have been procrastinating but now I am going back to not eating animal products. Glad to know I can reverse this.
This was very informative. Five years vegan, used to have debilitating PMDD, PMS a horrible pain in my uterus/ovaries. I also had IBS from Roaccutane. Since being plant-based my IBS, acne, painful and HEAVY periods have diminished. I am now in my final year on Bachelor of Human Nutrition and will go onto my Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics to spread this amazing information. Dr. Bernard is amazing at getting rid of misinformation and replacing it with scientific, tested, and true FACTS. Thank you for this video, the human body is truly amazing and plants complement our existence perfectly.
I have done this for a whole month and the results are so insane that my doctors don't know what to say or do. I told them I no longer felt pain during my periods and their answer was " It's not from diet changes." I truly believe dairy was causing me misery and it is now not worth it for me.
My painful periods stopped when I quit sugar. I still eat a lot of eggs, fish and meat, fruits and vegetables, 50/50 animal products and plant products. I have 0 pain, how would you explain, sugar causing it? It's not a coincidence I've tried it multiple times. I just don't consume lactose or butter.
@Neha Kudalkar same! I cut out sugar, grains, starch- basically going low carb (not keto but less than 100grams) I didn’t have nearly as much discomfort or pain this cycle as I usually do. Weird because I eat high fat and essentially meat ans veggies.
My gynaecologist told me that sugar decrease magnesium levels and creates deficiency. She put me on high doses of magnesium and told me not to mix my meat with carbs. So, I should either have meat and vegetables, or carbs and vegetables. I follow that and it fixed the problem. Also, my bleeding from 5 days a month get shorter, it’s only 2-3 days
Well he said fiber takes excess of estrogen out of the body, and that cheese and milk could add more estrogen than what your body is creating. But why is the body creating estrogen in an excess? That's what we need to focus on, and I think there's where sugar and insulin fit here.
Xeno estrogens in plastic containers and bottles, other chemicals in our water and chemical fertilizers they spray on crops acts as estrogens in our body, and hormones they give animals to produce more milk, meat etc cause girls to start their period early, makes to get "man boobs", etc. Hope this helps explain a little.
Joke apart. You should check your diet and dony drink or eat anything cold 🥶 stay on luke warm drinks. That's what we do in the east. No caffeine, only natural sugars, if you want to drink milk ever it should be hot and (if its cow milk than should always be sweet) no cold milk. I hope it helps. 🙏
Back in the 1800's, most girls started their periods at around 16. It's the xenoestrogens in plastics, water, food, pesticides etc. throughout the years that have lowered the age of the first period.
I'm here for my daughter which has always suffered painful periods and accepts them as something inevitable... Thank you very much Doctor for this big contribution of yours. God bless you.
Hes so good at explaining. He might surely be a brilliant professor in a university. I love the way he talks. A complex thing became easily comprehend with his way of talking.
Thank you for boldly proclaiming the corelation between diet and disease. Understanding what a taboo it is in western medicine to say these things out loud, I appreciate your honesty in sharing what you know!
I have been bedridden with my period every month since I was eleven for at least the first day. My periods were always long and heavy. I always talked to me gp about this and they would tell me to take advil. That never really worked. Even being vegan didn't help. It wasn't until I drastically cut down on fatty foods and increased my whole food consumption to 90%. I have more success this year than any other year in having PAIN FREE cycles. I am so blessed to have found this doctor and learn about being whole food plant based. This is my 4th year being vegan.
@@marycecilia8472 could you elaborate? What are things you stopped eating? What do you eat instead? I really want to implement a diet change this year. Thanks.
The sudden disappearance of PMS, cramps, breast pain and other things that I thought are a normal part of being a woman, is why my Veganuary experiment (I doubted I will last whole month, being such a meat eater and cheese lover) has been lasting for three years now😁 nope, never again. I've seen more positive changes but these ones were game changers for me! And my diet is not even 100 % WFPB!
@@polengreys Do try! Now I have a good friend, who quit dairy too (she's not vegan, still eats eggs and fish) and seen drastic changes in how she's feeling before and during her period. Sometimes she eats dairy (for example, when visiting family and unable to say no to grandma's cooking) and she tells me, she's always feeling worse on her next period. If you have questions or if you want to share how things are going for you, don't hesitate and contact me! Good luck, honestly, I wish all women could experience painless periods!
i started a moderate to little meat as possible diet about three months ago. i incorporate much more fruits and vegs too. avoiding all of these foods along with doing exercising has changed my period dramatically. i don’t even get severe period pains anymore or pms symptoms. everything he said in this actually is true. changing diet is beneficial in so many ways! im glad that i went through with this change and i hope all of you can too!
About 3 minutes in, I paused the clip… got out the salad from my fridge that I’d been avoiding for the last few days… and ate it immediately whilst watching the rest of this video. Thank you. It was a great reminder (and motivator!)
I cried watching this because what you say is 100% true. I had so much pain with my periods and I took care of my diet for the last 6 months. And my pain diminished. But one month I screwed up and ended up in Emergency. I know what you say is true. You offer so much hope. God bless you Dr.
This diet saved my life. I have been vegan for more than a decade but it is was not until I went OIL FREE that my stage 4 endometriosis pain and debilitating periods eased up. SOS free vegan is the way to go.
Congrats!!! I look foward to days without period pain!! I am 32 years now, and since I started mt cyxle at 11 have never been pain free 😭..and I have endometreosis as well. Trying to find natural solutions because it's taken over my life. Even lost my job from being sick too often & cant get a doctor to take me seriously to grant FMLA or something so I can keep a job without risk of being fired when I need sick days :(. I'm at the end of my rope here. Are you oil free all the time? Or just when it's close to your cycle? And how long before you noticed a change after cutting the oil? I dont eat or cook with extra or added oils, but I do use sauces and wonder if that's a culprit for me? Lots of nuts and I make my own energy bars from blending nuts ehich produce their own natural oils. I've been plant based for awhile now, but wonder if I should cut these too??
@@Honey-Bee-25 I am totally oil free unless I am at a restaurant for a special occasion (this is 2-3 times a year!). I also cut out nuts and even (gulp) avocados most of the time. I do not eat ANY packaged foods. I do not eat tofu (too fatty) although tempeh is ok every once in awhile. Having become an obsessive researcher about endometriosis to try to get my life back I came to really understand that fat is not the endo sufferers friend. I am also a nurse practitioner and have trained in functional medicine. Bladderwrack is a helpful supplement, BTW. But there is no treatment that has worked as well as WFPB SOS free living. Give it a try! Good luck!
@@z.j.maayan8458 so true, I have PCOS, had very bad cramps and extremely heavy/long periods. Went WFPB and cut out all overt fats except seeds, went gluten free and soy free, the cramps vanished and periods became lighter and shorter, now it's just 4 days, earlier it used to be 6-7 days. I read Dr. Barnard's recent book, love him, at least one doctor is giving some importance to women's issues.
@Z.J. Maayan i'm also vegan for many years now but i have really bad period cramps. i cut out oil from my diet a few years ago but actually ended up messing my hormones up and not getting my period at all. I'm a bit hesitant to cut out fat completely again because of my history ( isn't fat necessary for women's hormones?) do you still eat seeds and nuts or no fat at all? I really hope i'll find some answers to my problems :/
@@cozyinn4034 my heart goes out to you! This condition is really hard to manage. I should also say I had my last surgery in 2014 so some of the relief is simply from removal of endometrial implants. I do eat fats in the form of avocados and weekly brazil nuts (gotta get that selenium). I put ground flaxseed in my oatmeal every morning to assure I am getting my omega3s. Have you tried bladderwrack? Watch some videos on endometriosis by Dr Greger on nutritionfacts.org. Good luck!
I discovered this by accident when I contemplated going vegan and tried it out for three weeks. Had the most beautiful, pain-free, light period ever! I haven't gone vegan, but I try to eat vegan one week before my period is due (when I remember), and it helps a lot.
I went vegan a few months ago and I started to notice I can tell when I'm ovulating and I can tell when I'm about to start my period. Plus they are so much lighter with no pain.. so different! I started searching if this had anything to do with my new diet.. I see it does! Another reason to stick to this and this is a good one!
Wow that's really cool! Being able to feel when you ovulate is pretty convincing if you are trying to get pregnant. Alright I'm convinced I'm becoming vegan. Eggs and honey aren't good for pmdd anyway. Let alone fiber-poor hormone-ridden meats.
So this was my first full month of not eating dairy to see how my cycle would react. And great news! I only fully bled 1.5 days when it would usually be 3, and my cramps/nausea was 75% less. Typically I would have to heavily medicate myself to sleep in order to handle the pain and I would vomit at least 2x. I literally didn’t have to take meds and I didn’t vomit even though I was a little nauseous. Also I stopped using tampons a few years back and that has also made a world of difference. This month I will cut out all meat except seafood, and I will cut back on sugar, wheat products, and oils. This should be great! Thanks 🙏🏾
Dr Barnard, what a precious man you are. Hearing you describe and empathize with the womanly struggle has me in tears. I haven’t been able to see a doctor for quite some time but I feel like I just did watching this video. I am looking into your book and tips now. Going to give this way of eating a try. Wish me luck!
Me crying to my mother because of painful periods. Somehow I decided to be serious about my diet, and few months in am like, mother my pain is manageable I think it is due to diet change. Now, I come across this, makes me smile. I don't lay in bed no more with pain, I don't take pain relief anymore..
Zero pain, literally ZERO pain since I went vegan. I’m on a healthy natural Vegan diet + no oil. and once a week or once in two weeks I eat any Vegan junk food and junk snacks I want.
Very impressive. Now, to this I’m calling miracle. It is a magic for me. I was dreading the day before my period comes. The pain was beyond believe. Crippling. My boss even one time was calling for paramedic. What an agony. Best of the best to you.
Same here! I had terrible pain along with nausea....horrible. I went vegan, no oil, no processed food and now my period is only 4 days and a little bit of tension on the first day..no breast pain, no water retention. Who hoo!! I’m soooo happy. I totally recommend it.
What the doctor is saying is so true. Since I became vegan a few years ago, my severe period pains are a thing of the past. I don't even feel anything different until it actually starts, absolutely no pain, no bloating, nothing. That was an unexpected bonus of the vegan diet. Like the lady he mentioned, O had such aweful pains during periods. I suffered from fibroids at one point, which is very close to endometriosis. The pain went completely away when I stopped eating animal products. Anytime I add more oily food to my diet (e.g. peanut butter), I have some pain during my period, but not as painful as it used to be before I went vegan.
I read your article several years ago, adapted my food and it changed my life dramatically . I used to have to live on ibuprofen for pretty much 10 days every month. After I changed my diet , next month already noticed huge difference. I just wish I had done it earlier.
He’s absolutely right. Tried eating only vegetables and fruits after excruciating cramps. No meat, eggs, oil, no junk food. Absolutely no cramps by next cycle. It takes discipline but worth it if suffering from debilitating cramps.
Omg I cried when hearing that story of the Endo. How horrific how many women go through with that and lose the chance to be a parent because of lazy Doctors. How irresponsible for the Dr to say diet doesn't play a part.
Inverse bleeding is the cause of endometriosis, also. The blood contains stem cells meant to regenerate uterine lining and support vagina health. You shouldn't use tampons or cups, which stifle the release of blood. Use overnight pads, if necessary, but stay away from products that misdirect the flow. When the flow is blocked from it's natural route, it's like messing up the plumbing, it will spill into the wrong areas.
They never say anything about diet. I was offended by a doctor when I mentioned that I am vegetarian. She looked at me and said I should visit a psychiatrist 🙄 idiot who was alimantation doctor
@@АнаБуљешевић lol I get that all the time, I'm Vegan lol. I have a endo specialist who when found out i am vegz actually said, well you'll live longer than me 😂
I used to think a man would never be able to tell me anything about a period that would benefit me. But I stand corrected. You have given me more information in this video than any FEMALE doctor I've had. Even nutritionists they had me speak with didn't inform me the way you have. I suffer from endometriosis. I was just given prescription after prescription due to heavy bleeding and long cycles. I stopped taking anything just because it made everything worse. Thank you for sharing what you know. I will start incorporating what you have said into my diet. Fyi. I LOVE cheese! 😬
Thanks for this video. I eat cheese occasionally. Mac and cheese included. When I'm on a 21 day Daniel fast (Christian fast with no oil, no sugar, no baked stuff, no animal products) I have NO cramps. I experience fatigue but that's it. You're talking the truth.
Video is so true...when I eat only plant based foods.. My period is wonderful no cramps bleeding is light. When I started eating animal products.. my menstrual health declined. The pain returned and heavy bleeding. Thank you for reminding me to stick with a plant based diet..
Since going plant based and cutting all dairy, my periods are so much less painful. I can carry on my day and do sports even on my heaviest days. A huge difference for me and I've suffered with severe period pain my whole life.
My cramps ended after first two days of my period. But I just ate a grilled cheese sandwich and my cramps came back after 15 minutes of eating. And now I’m here dying.
this is aGod send. I have never had a severe cramp until 3am this morning and IT WAS THE MOST HORRIFIC FEELING I'VE EVER FELT. I've been feeling a pull to change my diet anyways. This is the Lord speaking to me. Thank you❤️
I wish I'd known all of this before I had a hysterectomy for adenomyosis. Thankyou so, so much for doing videos on these issues. It's too late for me, but my cousins are coping better with endometriosis because of this information.
Wish I'd known. I had estrogen positive breast cancer at 33 & 40, severe excruciatingly painful endometriosis & one oophorectomy. I must have had way too much estrogen! I wish I had known while young but the vegan diet is amazing now! I feel great!
Don’t worry. The diet doesn’t work for everyone. I tried it and it worked for the first few months only. Moreover I had massive cravings that were super terrible. Plus it was an expensive diet. hysterectomy was the next step for me after 4 years of trying allons-y everything. In the end it all depends on the type of endo you have.
@@commscompany1502 given the improvement in my overall health, I believe wfpb would have been helpful to me. I find it cheaper - we spend about 2/3 of the amount we used to on food shopping. We don't buy processed foods like meat alternatives so it's cheap to do.
I went on the mini pill as advised by my GP, in order to stop my periods due to the pain I have because of endometriosis. I too was advised to have a hysterectomy, but I just couldn't do it, despite already having 4 children. I am constantly bleeding clots and the worse thing is that the pain has come back but even worse than before. As a SDA Christian, I'm already aware that the bible has given us the blueprint of what we should and shouldn't eat, but I really enjoy eating meat. Will have to make some changes concerning my diet, because the pains are too much! Thanks for this video, I know what I need to do.
This was amazing!! I thought removing animal products was enough but it looks like reducing the oils is going to really help beyond miles. Thank you so much
I have endo and had the most painful periods and actually had constant stomach pain....... I am a registered dietitian, and I found Keto completely dissolved the pain, when I gave up gluten and sugar!! Completely opposite of what you're recommending. Quit sugar everyone..... I eat fish and dairy and oils daily. I used to have to take off work because of stomach pain and also period pain. As long as I avoid any food triggers (sugar/gluten) I feel great.
I’m there right now 😭😭 have managed to stop eating red meat for over 10 years but chicken and dairy I struggled but ready had no animals products this week
I believe this bc whenever I'm stressed and eat not so good = I'm dying in pain on the bathroom floor when my period is near or here and begging for God's Mercy. My body goes into a panic. Literally wish this pain on no one 😭😭😭
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been having periods for more than a decade now and I’m in my 20s. When I tell people that I don’t have cramps, they tell me that I’m lucky and sometimes people don’t even believe me. I’m not vegan however there are times in my life when I haven’t gone vegan before. I see the benefits in a plant-based eating plan and I recommend that to everyone. I eat small amounts of animal product without much problem. I also see the value in limiting oil intake. Everyone was 90% plant-based or even 80% plant-based, it would be a game changer for many people. There’s too much reliance today I’m highly processed foods and factory farmed animal products that are made from animals that eat a highly inflammatory diet. This is just my opinion and I hope you all take care.
I have became a vegetarian 6 years ago, the most noticeable thing that happened was that my periods became completely painless and my bleeding decreased substantially. This is just one of the signs that body is sending to us and showing us what kind of diet is meant for us naturally.
@anastasia bolsun this doesn’t sound normal, it may be due to some ovarian cysts or fibroids that cause excessive bleeding, you need to see a gynecologist. Or it may also be due to your nutrition. Are you eating enough legumes? (Lentils, beans, chickpeas and rice must be your main meals) many vegetarians eat fresh vegetables mostly and this will cause many issues, as a vegetarian your health and energy will be mostly supplied by the above ingredients that I mentioned.
Love this video, I never lost my period but when I did get my period I would be very sleepy, irritated very easily and cry all the time because of the terrible cramps then I switched to a WFPB diet and I barely even have cramps they’re almost non-existent, and I never get tired like I did before, all within 2 months, definitely life changing!!
I started my period a week early so I ate meat because I thought I had time. I had mild cramps the first day but nothing compared to the unbearable pain I usually get. They didn't keep me up all night. The 2nd - 5th days I didn't eat meat. Just fruits, vegetables, and bread. I didn't have anymore cramps. I just had my a few PMS symptoms irritability for a few days but that was it. I'm glad I found you. You are God sent!
My partner is vegan, iv been with her 2 years and if I’m honest I was and am still skeptical of this lifestyle. I suffer with really bad with period pain, bloating, severe breast pain and I’m out for at least a 4 days before and during, I get really tired, drained in fact. So I’m going to try this after this period and check back in with the truth. Because no one seems to have an answer for me and everyone is telling me this is normal, which in my own opinion isn’t because iv only been suffering with this 5 months and I’m getting my period over 10-12 years years now I’m 27.

I supplemented vitamins like zinc to aid in the vitamins I no longer get from meat you will not regret this choice try it
Wow this makes a lot of sense! I’ve been almost totally plant-based for the past 5 years or so. But I started transitioning to this diet a few years before that. I definitely noticed the difference between the extreme and debilitating menstrual pain I had before going plant-based and how it lessened as I slowly stopped eating dairy and eggs. But I still had some pain that is fairly uncomfortable though it wasn’t nearly as severe as before. I still am taking Ibuprofen for my monthly cramps. Some months are better than others, but I’m thinking that might be because of the oil. So I really want to experiment with no added oils as much as possible.
Perhaps stay away from Soy (Tofu, Edamame, Soy Protein powders, Soy milk, and Soy sauce). Soy can mess with our hormones and cause cysts and all kinds of nasty things 🙁
Thank you so much for this video🙏😭 My sister and I suffer from severe menstrual cramps 😩 Unfortunately by trial and error I figured out to avoid dairy and sweet treats because of the directly proportional relationship it has to my pain. Sad news for a choc-a-holic! But obviously I didn't understand the science of it all. It's great that this issue is being brought to the forefront because it can be very debilitating for sufferers, as well as difficult for unaffected people to empathise and painkillers are just not strong enough.
God's food is medicine. Back to Eden. Can you imagine just how many hysterectomies could have been avoided if doctors actually knew this stuff called "Nutrition"?! Instead they spend most of their studies on Pharmacology. Thank you Dr. Barnard for being an actual doctor who genuinely cares.
I’ve always had bad period cramps, but thid month was great! I would attribute it to eating papaya since that’s the only thing different I did that month. I will examine this next to see if the results are the same.
Whenever I eat dairy a few weeks before my period, the pain is unbearable. Whenever I cut almost all of it out, the flow is light and painless, it's unbelievable!
I cut out sugar and did yoga almost daily. Also intermittent fasting and no caffeine. The latest cycle - didn't even notice it. Pain free, bloat free and symptom free.
Just told someone this information today through my own research and trials and tribulations with fibroids and severe menstrual pain. Then i stumble onto this video.. Eating vegetarian or vegan really does make marked improvement with your cycle. It is worth a try ladies. Doctor thank you for the valuable information.
Avoiding fried foods while having PMS?? Waaaaahhhhhh! But french fries? True tho, since being vegan (but I still do oil) my symptoms have alleviated 90%
My story= I’ve been a vegetarian since age of 14 (unhealthy vegetarian until the age of 24..) after age of 24 I started to eat atiinflammatory food, and gone to raw vegan for 3 years, which was awesome in the beginning, but didn’t work in the long run, then normal healthy vegan. So I’ve been a healthy vegan since age 24-35 who knows a lot about nutrition. But my cramps got so bad during this healthy vegan period. Worse than ever. And my menstruation got less and less. I even thought I was in pre menopause for a while. But now this spring, my menstruation pain finally improved when I increased healthy oils in my diet like fish oil. I use much more than recommended even my skin improved and my energy improved! Before... I tried it all.. So my menstruation is normal again, no PMS (PMDS) anymore. Rawfood is awesome for healing and cleansing for a period. But not in the long run. The more I read about nutrition and how the body works. The more I doubt all of this kinds of advise. Health isn’t always this easy! Menstrual pain and PMS can hade so many factors to it. But I so agree not to eat junkfood, overconsumption of industrial meat, fried food and sugar. That is ABC and many people Will improve their health just by stop eating junk which has no nutritional value at all. Then checkout if you have malnutrition of some kind! In my case, I also need supliments for my thyorid. Even though I eat nuts (prepared) and chlorella..
Thanks for speaking up! ❤❤❤❤ He is just saying woman should be vegan just because. He ist talking about 1 Hormon and ignores the others that participate in the cycle. It can help some women for some time but not on the long run
Fish oil is linked to cancer. Did you consume flaxseed oil or freshly ground flaxseed before turning to processed fish? I have been consuming 1/2 cup flaxseed, freshly ground, every single day. It has helped my hormonal symptoms significantly.
I went keto and ate mostly animals foods and my period cramps stopped. I also achieved weight loss and improvement in memory and concentration. When I was vegan before that, it made my symptoms worse. Vegan for 2.5 years and suffered throughout it. On keto I ate a lot of cheese and animal fat (no milk because it contains amylase). When I cut carbs and removed sugars all my health problems stopped.
Dear dr. You just made me go down memory lane and I can agree with you totally. Everything you said is so correct. I stopped animal foods and so my pain had stopped but when I started again it returned. I wish I could give you my life story. I feel so excited right now.
There are two Questions that came up for me: 1. couldn’t you eat a bit of chicken (for example) and make the rest of the meal high fiber foods? 2. Couldn’t I have some avocado or nutbutter when my period is still 2-3 weeks away? Because healthy fats are also important for brain health right? Thank you for your video, very helpful!
Reading other comments and knowing other people, there are many diets that help reducing pms. Just like there are many reasons behind pms, there are many ways to reduce it
Yes. I found that part awkward. A plate should consist of veggies anyways so the fibers are there from them, who cares if chicken doesn't have fibers. That's why we need to eat different food, you won't find something alone that meets your needs. Meat sits in your gi system for longer, but that's not the point.
I think he means try eliminating animal products and high fat for sometime before your periods and see if it works. It’s called elimination diet.If it works then Voila you have found Peace✌️.
I really want to thank you doctor for your video. I saw your video last month, and i followed the diet you recommended. I avoided milk, cheese, and red meat(had it once or twice in a month) and i have no pain this time. Thank you so much 😊 it really helped.
I've stopped consuming meat and animal products in general, also completely stopped coffee and it really reduced my pain, I went from a 10 every month to a 1 or 2 occasionally. great advice here, don't hesitate it's worth it
Thank you so much! When I went vegan my craps and pain disappeared completely but then I started eating more fats and oils in my diet and they went back almost 5 years later but worse than ever. Definitely vegan + oil free diet together is the solution! ♥️
Dr. Barnard!!!. Thank you so much for this video!. I have your book already and I have to say this really works. I've been vegan for 2 1/2 years but was still struggling with menstrual cramps until I got rid of the nut butters and avocado and the pain and clots pretty much disappeared 😱. I used to take 2 Ibuprofen capsules every 6 hours for the first 3 days of my period and used one of those disposable heating pads all day long to be able to function and go to work. Now I don't take ANY medicine at all and of course no more heating pads either 🤗🤗🤗🤗. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you so much for everything you do 🙏🤗.
Wow that makes sense. There's my answer lol. I need to get away from certain nut butters. I think I need to eliminate nut butters that have palm oil and all those added sugars. And I think cutting down on dressings too lol. This information is so great.
@@thevegantitian It totally works. It's so funny that you just commented on this today. I went camping a few weeks ago and kinda got "off track" with my meals. I had vegan mayo, vegan cheese, smoky tempeh sandwiches very frequently for those 2 weeks while I was camping. And boy did that messed me up!!! My period cramps are HORRIBLE this time around! Back to the Ibuprofen capsules 😫. I am positive it was the vegan junk I had on those sandwiches I ate. I did eat salads and fruit but the oil and fatty foods have to go in order for this to work. In my case, even soy messes me up. My skin breaks out like crazy when I eat anything made of soy 😞. What we eat has so much to do with the way our bodies react!.
@@thevegantitian There's a Channel here on TH-cam called " The whole food plant based cooking show". You can find oil free dressing recipes there. They are very good!. I've made some of them and really enjoyed them 😉
@@fabic1567 Aweee so sorry you had that experience. I had to take a huge break and stop consuming a lot of tofu. Back in March I had the worse period pain you can imagine and I learned it was the soy. I had consumed way too much tofu that month. I'm so sad I can't consume tofu much anymore because the soy messes my hormones up 😣. Don't worry we will get our vegan diets on point lol. We will get it right😄🙌🎉🎊
Here is my testimony! I was in so much pain - cramping and bloated often even outside of menstrual period. I watched this video months ago and decide to cut off animal products from my diet to which I was amazed by the fact that the first month I didn’t have any cramps and the bloating wasn’t as bad and over time that went away as well . I told my doctor about this - he was surprised and couldn’t figure out why I was cramping so bad in first place. Long story short - its been now 8 months, I remained on plant based diet: I consume veggies, fruits and low carb foods and I have no desire to eat meat or any other animal products ever. Thank you for helping me in discovering that animal products was causing me so much pain, for sharing your knowledge and the lady’s story with us. To the women in pain - sending you all hugs and give it a try to see if that helps you. This is not a vegan or plant based recruitment 😂y’all know what’s best for you.
I am sugar free, gluten free vegan. I always have had very heavy painful periods. I have very high testosterone for a female, once I took plant phytoestrogens and my pain was gone and periods lasted 3 days max not 7 days like before. My weight became normal, before it was hard to gain feminine volumes. But now is hard to order those capsules to my country. I drink chlorophyll every morning and I was suprised that this helped me alot with my pain it was almost gone. I have been drinking only just 1 month.
I once went an entire week before my period without any dairy and meat, and the results were amazing. Pain and blood loss decreased by 90%. There are so many issues with dairy and meat. It thickens everything, it contains antibiotics, it contains little fiber, causes bloating, etc etc.
I used to have horrible cramps... like the only thing that helped me was the pain killer which I refused to take whenever I could afford to stay home crawled up in bed. I was vegetarian and gave up eggs, but only the moment I gave up dairies my period cramps got so minimal I could barely feel it and I even have months in which I don't feel any pain. I have been vegan for 2 years now best decision I have ever made.

I have found that coffee, caffeine, sugar and dairy are the foods to avoid during my period. I definitely need protein during my period, especially with my anemia. Eating whole foods is my best balancer.
I'm the same, no dairy or sugar does the trick for me.
Why not having iron rich food for your anemia ..
Yea if I can't manage it day to day, at least the 7 days before my period i gotta minimize those. It helps so much.

I went dairy free and this was one of the first things I noticed, its nice to hear that it can help others!
Hmm. My roommate and I crave cheese during this time.
Interesting. I can never stand eating dairy during my period.

After changing my diet to gluten free, dairy free, mostly sugar free and alcohol free my periods are pain free, lighter and no longer last 8-10 days. I wish I knew to do so years ago.

I’m sorry to hear that.
Hi. I'm just curious. Have you ever gotten your thyroid tested??
I developed hypothyroidism in my early 30’s after having my son, who is now 23. I have a lot of ailments now and I’m convinced it’s because my thyroid is being poorly treated. My dr just gives me thyroxine , which I know is not working as I still feel symptomatic.
Check out the book Sacred Woman by Queen Afua. It’ll really help you. Also, turmeric pills for thyroid.

Yes we do.
🙌 Really
That advice gave me the biggest period pain.
Raw primal, carnivore diet for 3 years and ZERO PAIN so far.
This makes sense. When I first started my period, I didn't have any pain at all. A few years later my family moved to America and I definitely ate a very different diet after we moved, and all of a sudden I was in severe pain during my period for the first time in my life.
Me too we're same
Funny, for me it was the other way around. I moved from Switzerland to the U.S and suddenly my cramps stopped :D I hope you are feeling better now and found food which helps your body to relax.
What foods did you eat before you came to the United States? I am desperate to stop this pain.
Where did you came from?
The US has so much processed and GMO foods 😞
THANK YOU 💕💕
I was vegetarian in highschool.

Dr. Bernard is amazing at getting rid of misinformation and replacing it with scientific, tested, and true FACTS. Thank you for this video, the human body is truly amazing and plants complement our existence perfectly.
Please do!! Wish you all the best!!
Roaccutane doesn't cause IBS
this is just vegan propaganda. I am living proof that the vegan diet is not medicinal.
Veganism is extremely unhealthy. Meat is extremely nutritious. Very unhealthy long term to be a vegan
I have done this for a whole month and the results are so insane that my doctors don't know what to say or do. I told them I no longer felt pain during my periods and their answer was " It's not from diet changes."
I truly believe dairy was causing me misery and it is now not worth it for me.
These “doctors” want us sick so they got more to do in their jobs
My painful periods stopped when I quit sugar. I still eat a lot of eggs, fish and meat, fruits and vegetables, 50/50 animal products and plant products. I have 0 pain, how would you explain, sugar causing it? It's not a coincidence I've tried it multiple times. I just don't consume lactose or butter.
Ditto! No sugar or gluten, & then even my migraines stopped. Which were the most debilitating part of my menstruation process each month. 🤗
Yes the same happened for me. Quitting sugar and limiting refined carbs helped so much!
@Neha Kudalkar same! I cut out sugar, grains, starch- basically going low carb (not keto but less than 100grams)
I didn’t have nearly as much discomfort or pain this cycle as I usually do.
Why does my uterus expect me to be pregnant at the age of 10 😀😀😀😀
Xeno estrogens in plastic containers and bottles, other chemicals in our water and chemical fertilizers they spray on crops acts as estrogens in our body, and hormones they give animals to produce more milk, meat etc cause girls to start their period early, makes to get "man boobs", etc. Hope this helps explain a little.
Lol cos that's the purpose of periods, when they start 🤣😅
Because it's crazy optimistic 😂
Back in the 1800's, most girls started their periods at around 16. It's the xenoestrogens in plastics, water, food, pesticides etc. throughout the years that have lowered the age of the first period.
This is so true! I used to have the worst pain before changing my diet. Now on a plant based diet and I have absolutely NO PAIN during my cycles. 👼

I have been bedridden with my period every month since I was eleven for at least the first day. My periods were always long and heavy. I always talked to me gp about this and they would tell me to take advil. That never really worked. Even being vegan didn't help.
I started having coconut water everyday a week before my periods and I experience no period pain any more. Give it a try if it's available near you.
Amen! 🙌 I love this so much because it's in line with our original Bible diet as well. So motivated!
My hair, skin and nails have never been as good as after going vegan whole foods!
I am so glad I found this video some 2 weeks ago. Removed Dairy and super painful periods are gone. I have had those for 20 years. Thank you!
He’s absolutely right. Tried eating only vegetables and fruits after excruciating cramps. No meat, eggs, oil, no junk food. Absolutely no cramps by next cycle. It takes discipline but worth it if suffering from debilitating cramps.
That is a good manifestation: "we love foods that do not love us back and we have to break this pattern" 🙏🏼
true
Omg I cried when hearing that story of the Endo. How horrific how many women go through with that and lose the chance to be a parent because of lazy Doctors. How irresponsible for the Dr to say diet doesn't play a part.
I did too! I’d be devastated if I lost the ability to have children for a curable illness.
@@meyou2236 Nah... Retrograde menstruation happens to a certain extent in every woman. It's not caused by menstrual hygiene products.
A dr yesterday told me to supplement some things coz I'm low and I was like nah, I just had a baby, I need to watch what I'm eating and listed iron and calcium rich foods for her to understand lmao.
Oh my lord I should try this too😍🥰
Video is so true...when I eat only plant based foods.. My period is wonderful no cramps bleeding is light. When I started eating animal products.. my menstrual health declined. The pain returned and heavy bleeding. Thank you for reminding me to stick with a plant based diet..
Shared with my daughters and grandaughters. Thank you.
Hang in there!
this is aGod send. I have never had a severe cramp until 3am this morning and IT WAS THE MOST HORRIFIC FEELING I'VE EVER FELT. I've been feeling a pull to change my diet anyways. This is the Lord speaking to me. Thank you❤️
Finally someone that is giving out decent advice and is knowledgeable! Thank you Sir
I wish I'd known all of this before I had a hysterectomy for adenomyosis. Thankyou so, so much for doing videos on these issues. It's too late for me, but my cousins are coping better with endometriosis because of this information.
💙💙
Keto is so dangerous how could you even recommend this as a dietician. Awful.
Keto and carnivore is a proper human diet !
My pain lessened and got relaxed by listening to this only, I dont know why but this helped a lot... thanks!
I was absolutely delighted with the immediate healing I got through Dr odija on TH-cam. Keeping saving lives doctor...
Going VEGAN because F this sh*t! I thought I was going to lose it last night!!! F!!!
I’m there right now 😭😭 have managed to stop eating red meat for over 10 years but chicken and dairy I struggled but ready had no animals products this week
Me and you in the same boat. Bloating and vomiting until blood flash out of my nostril.
When I was young my mom would make soups and teas...their warmth felt so good in my tummy, they even helped with the pain in my bones due to cramping.
I believe this bc whenever I'm stressed and eat not so good = I'm dying in pain on the bathroom floor when my period is near or here and begging for God's Mercy. My body goes into a panic. Literally wish this pain on no one 😭😭😭
It really worked I tried for two months and I felt no pain in my periods .thank you so much .
This is the best period explanation video ever!! With the information about like estrogen! I’ve never heard it before!!! So so helpful thankyou!
Hi Roisin how did it go
Waiting for an update, too 😅 Also, have anyone mentioned endometriosis to you? It might explain why you're feeling like this on your period

I'll update for her !! I stopped all meat and dairy for 30 days ! Game changer it's been 90 days with no painful cramps shorter period and my energy level is at a all time high ! I supplemented vitamins like zinc to aid in the vitamins I no longer get from meat you will not regret this choice try it
@@30niksterhow do you get your cholesterol though?
Ibuprofen is very bad for you. Please stop using it. Use organic peppermint tea (hot) x
God created all the foods we needs in the beginning. I can testify of the blessings of God from eating plant based. Be safe yall
Try magnesium powder (not pills) and corydalis herb.
How many weeks exactly?
Oh how I wish I'd known this in years past, for myself and my daughters.
Get an air fryer. You can find them $60 and under, and make sure you apply a coupon code. :)
You can make oven fries with russet potatoes and no oil! Literally just cut them up, toss them in seasoning if you want, and bake them 😊
Ikr, oily french fries are what I crave during that time. The oilier the better. Lol.
But I'm seriously gonna do this strictly for at least 2 weeks
Fries are everything LOL!
@Betty M What kind of healthy oils do you use?
Thanks for speaking up! ❤❤❤❤
He is just saying woman should be vegan just because.
🙏🏾TY
I went keto and ate mostly animals foods and my period cramps stopped. I also achieved weight loss and improvement in memory and concentration. When I was vegan before that, it made my symptoms worse. Vegan for 2.5 years and suffered throughout it. On keto I ate a lot of cheese and animal fat (no milk because it contains amylase). When I cut carbs and removed sugars all my health problems stopped.
👍👍👍👍
Dear dr. You just made me go down memory lane and I can agree with you totally. Everything you said is so correct. I stopped animal foods and so my pain had stopped but when I started again it returned. I wish I could give you my life story. I feel so excited right now.
Best Dr. I’ve EVER came across.
❤️Wish I knew this 54 years ago. Thank You ❤️
There are two Questions that came up for me:
1. couldn’t you eat a bit of chicken (for example) and make the rest of the meal high fiber foods?
2. Couldn’t I have some avocado or nutbutter when my period is still 2-3 weeks away? Because healthy fats are also important for brain health right?
Thank you for your video, very helpful!
Fats are super important. Especially avocado. Coconut oil. Pecans. Macadamia nuts.
Did u cut out sugar?
@@aimaeyo228 i don't really take sugar other than for coffee or tea.
This is absolutely true. I followed a Vegan diet for 4 months and that was the only time in my life that I had cramp free periods. It was amazing!
Is using olive oil to fry or cook with bad? Should I change to coconut oil only??
Dr.
