Yes, Alex is a good mechanic, but they wil not tell you the rest of the story for obvios reason. I a retired mechanic, I own a 2016 Dodge Ram with that infamous 3.6 Pentastar engine, right now the truck has 120.000 miles on it, and only do the oil, spark plug, air filter change. Jog the engine EVERY MORNING ! Avoid that dry start, AND USE A GOOD QUALITY OIL, i use Royal Purple oil, and put a baxter oil adapter at at 100,00 miles ! 😂😂😂 Let me tell you, the dry start vanished for ever !!!
Alex, This engine has great design and they mess it up with rockers that do not hold up and plastic oil coolers and a bunch of plastic everywhere...thank you for sharing your knowledge. For owners that drive $65,000 Rubicons it is disappointing to see plastic oil coolers that can crack. Even the 2024 models still have that same installation. That is so unjustified and is called manufacturer greed and carelessness. Alex, keep up your wonderful work. Thank you.
I don't understand how because this rocker lifter issue is so common there isn't some kind of class action or recall. Definitely not ok for a customer to have to pay for this expensive repair out of pocket because of a design flaw. Thanks for the recent uploads Alex!
A P0128 may set in cold weather conditions especially if your oil level is high. The code will pop up when the computer detects that the engine hasn't reached operating temperature fast enough, it doesn't necessarily mean the thermostat itself is bad, but means the engine hasn't gotten hot fast enough for the computers liking. If the oil is up high within the hash mark then let your engine heat up a bit longer before putting it in gear. If the oil level is above the hash mark on the dipstick then be sure to remove some oil or get a proper oil change as too much oil can be bad. Also, if you have one of those aluminum oil filter adapter housings then it may take longer for your engine to warm up as the oil cooler is just a simple heat transfer device, the flow of coolant and oil through the oil cooler may keep your engine cold long enough on a cold start to set this code. But that is just another thing to take note of because, of course, the thermostat could be stuck partially or fully open, too.

Due to the cartridge type oil filter lacking an anti drain back valve like a spin-on type has, there is a momentary lack of lubrication at start-up to the valve components. A company known as Baxter Performance sells an oil filter adapter to allow the use of a spin-on oil filter. There are two models available… one to keep the oil filter up top, the other is to remote mount an oil filter connected by oil lines. I went with the remote mount and guess what ?? No more “clatter” noise at start-up!
Did all 24 followers and lifters. Cam lobes were fine. Made sure that I used Melling followers and lifters. Oil soaked all parts for a few days prior to doing the job.
This is for the lifters the ticking , when the pentastar block is being made they blow hot sand thru the ports , the cylinder walls to assure smooth flow , but before building the motor they have to clear the sand , but not all the sand gets out and eventually it makes it across the lifters some stay on the lifters some will later pass later
Are you replacing the parts with the same type of lifters and camshaft with the ones used by the manufacturer? Or parts better than the manufacturer issued parts?
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for the excellent breakdown Alex. I'm considering getting a used V6 Durango with 40-60k miles and this gives me an idea on what type of work it would need to be done to it. Its my understanding that the lifter failure is due to dry starts due to no drainback valve in the upper engine oiling system. Baxter performance sells a fix for this. Mishimoto makes the best oil filter/cooler housing.
I’ve installed the Doorman aluminum oil filter housing and a Baxter Performance Oil Filter Adapter on my 2014 Durango. Decided on the Baxter model designed for running oil lines to a remote mounted spin-on oil filter. Now, no more momentary “clatter” noise at start up. My take on the Pentastar V6 designed with the cartridge type oil filter, is that it was engineered to hopefully just last beyond the factory warranty and after that provide a steady stream of income for dealership service departments!
Harmonic balance that's the only thing I haven't done to my 2011 dodge durango other than that I did everything else you mentioned already even my transmission 176000 miles
The oil coolers usually go out from Lazy Mechanics and Kids at Oil change places using Impact guns on the cap. Rocker arms must be to thin oil. I have owned 5 Pentastar cars now 3 chargers, 2 in Durangos never a problem, Over 150,000 miles on 2, And well over 200k on the other 3. I live in Montana and the weather is cooler so I can only guess it has to be the cooler running engine keeping the oil temp lower. All the Ticking engines seem to be in Hot climates, And Dodge engineers have said it was designed for 5w-30 oil, Not the 5w-20.
I have 07 charger with 2.7 liter v-6. Anything you can address on that motor. Car was abandoned 4 years ago so it’s about to be my daily car. My first dodge being owned. Thank you sir. Great videos you have!!!
Another problem is the factory coolant thermostat, replace it with a 170 degree one, need to do some modification. Those engine run hot from the factory !
👍🏿# 13! I bought the lifetime powertrain warranty when I purchased my 2016 wrangler new. I don't know if changing the oil cooler housing or the thermostat housing would void the warranty. I have 22,400 mi and haven't had any problems. After watching your videos I don't want to wait until these parts fail but I don't want any issues with mopar honoring the warranty if there's a problem.
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep will use any excuse to void your warranty the dealerships are the most dishonest disgusting crooks on the planet. When you're Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep breaks and it will break go to a good private mechanic like this guy.
So my 2014 Durango v6 has cylinder 6 misfire / multiple misfires when I put my scanner, and the breaks are locked up, does this mean the heads are blown? 😢
i see what u mean with the motor mount... so basically if u rev your engine and your engine moves as if its a heart beating rythmically then its bad news... so in this situation instead of keeping that heart beat we have cease it and kill the heart beat to make sure everything else and good and stable. Gotcha
The rocker arms for the 2020 Dodge Durango GT looks and is different from other models apparently they changed these in later models??? What’s your experience???
Have you seen many Durango front heater core leaks? Is it the 2 o-ring seals that leak or the actual core that leaks? Is there an easier way to replace them. I've seen people have to remove the whole dash to get to them. That's just insane.. what a crappy design. I ask because when i turn on the engine when cold i smell coolant. But not when hot. I suspect it could be the seals leaking when cold but they seal as engine warms up. And your top 5 is spot on. Our Durango has 91k miles and its on its 3rd thermostat. I've had to replace both the oil cooler and driver side enpine mount. I didn't let the mount get as bad as in your video. I felt a weird slipping like sensation on acceleration. When pushing gas while in drive is when you could see engine lift a bit.
I’m still not getting rid of my Dodges I have 2 2004’s 1 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 and 1 Neon SXT with the 2.0 love them both and have owned them since brand new.

Good luck with all, and God Bless you and your fam ✌️
randomly found this video, love the happy attitude. sub +
9:43 just got it, PCM:P0128
I have a 09 5.7 ram 1500 love the truck just found your channel will be watching for many tips
Thanks!
I appreciate you 🙏🏽
Harmonic balance that's the only thing I haven't done to my 2011 dodge durango other than that I did everything else you mentioned already even my transmission 176000 miles

Anything with the 2.7, Sell it fast or Start saving for new car, That engine is just junk and nothing can fix that.
I’m weak his wife said and do! behind the camera awwww and then he smiled 😊😊❤❤
Hey there, owner of multiple chargers since ‘06. I use Quantum Blue oil from BND automotive. It’s definitely the oil.
Noted! 📝
Do you have a video on how to change the oil pump on a 2015 durango with a pentastar 3.6
I have a 2014 Dodge Durango 3.6 is it making a werid noise. I wish a could let you hearit to get your opinion on what it may be.
Find me on Instagram and send me a video!
J.T. Online Mechanic shows this all day long.
Very in depth analytical video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Glad you liked it
I've heard collapsed lifters on the hemi like no tomorrow but not a 3.6.. it's weird
The oíl cooler housing is not positioned on the same place in the engine bay of the Chrysler Town & Country. However, has the same issue.
Yup rockers AND lifters !! Always..
Is there an aftermarket rocker and roller setup that you can recommend.
They fixed the problem with the Gen 2 Pentastar. You can use Mopar replacement.
@@Sierra76Spartan by chance do you know what year they fixed it?
@@dc5duben96 2016
The video is significant and helpful, do you do any review for product related to Auto lights?
This the video I been awaiting on it’s the plastic oil cooler on these for me
The 3.6 is also in the VW Routan and the Mopar lifters and rockers are the same and cheaper.
So my 2014 Durango v6 has cylinder 6 misfire / multiple misfires when I put my scanner, and the breaks are locked up, does this mean the heads are blown? 😢
I’m gonna start putting 5w30 in my 2016 sxt, my next oil change.
Great video man I will definitely subscribe
Is the V8 better for longevity???
I always wondered.
i see what u mean with the motor mount... so basically if u rev your engine and your engine moves as if its a heart beating rythmically then its bad news... so in this situation instead of keeping that heart beat we have cease it and kill the heart beat to make sure everything else and good and stable. Gotcha
Correct! I love the analogy! 😁
Hello . I am going to buy 2019 dodge challenger 3.6 v6 . These problems also have at over 2017 models ?
Just curios where all those needle bearings go when the come out of rockers? Do you remove the oil pan and clean out the sump screen?
What brand of oil cooler do you replace them with?
Great video Doctor
The rocker arms for the 2020 Dodge Durango GT looks and is different from other models apparently they changed these in later models??? What’s your experience???
What about the R/T models 5.7 hemi
5:45 !!!! 12:10 is that part worth fixing if you got over 250k on that v6 engine ?
Wow, thanks for this video! I only knew a couple of these.
No problem! 👨🏽🔧
I bet you take good care of them. I tell people this all the time if you take care your machines, your machines will take care of you.
The Neon does have something going on with it at startup then going away once it warms up. That motor has them rocker arms that are assembled on a shaft so I’m not sure what it is but it has no lose in power she get up a goes.
@@antoniomarc7174 from my experience with those little neon motors, they are pretty good and never give too many issues unless you let the timing belt break
@@antoniomarc7174 what is your mileage
@@AlexTheCarDoctor 98700 very little mileage for the year
alex are you located in atl ga the for sale sign out front shows a 404 and a 770 number.
Yes right off for forest parkway… it’s technically morrow, ga
Must have tools to start working on your car would be a pretty cool video if you have time!
@@Ryanr2789 I got ya! I’ll put something together for ya!
Thank you!
I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with 170,000 miles and a 3.6L Pentastar V6. I use synthetic oil, changed every 6,000 miles, and never had a problem with the Jeep. I own a 2015 Chr4yler 300c with the same engine, but I only have 9,560 miles on the car. How many miles are on these vehicles you are working on?
Is this lifter/rocker problem only certain years on Dodge and Ram vehicles?
Does this include the Chrysler Pacifica too?
Once you replace them are you good now ?
You should be. I’ve seen these engines with close to 300,000 miles if you take care of them.
When the harmonic balancer is going bad or unleveled does it make some weird noise ?
It’s possible depending on situation
very informative show, love it. 2 questions for you. #1, what average mileage do the rockers tend to fail? #2, do you replace the lifters/rockers with aftermarket replacements or just oem? Keep up the good work!
my rockers went out at 140, thermostat at 143, and oil cooler at 166. The thermosat literally had a whole the size of a quarter on the front, like it had imploded from inside.
I am actually about to get a 2019 dodge durango gt plus and i am glad I have seen this video. I will still get my durango 😂
I know people love their Dodge Durangos, Challengers and Chargers. People are still gonna buy them. That’s why I made this video so you can know what you’re getting into lol
Wish I saw this sooner - yes, I think I've hit each and every one of those with my 2014 Durango Limited. Damned Oil Cooler.. (twice?), thermostat, etc.. can't wait to get rid of this money pit.
Do you use OEM parts or aftermarket replacement parts? If you use aftermarket parts, which brand is reliable?
I use aftermarket parts. Milling has been great.
@AlexTheCarDoctor Thanks, Alex.
I had 2015 sxt Durango (195k) miles , and 2022 Gt Durango (20k) miles both started to make transmissions whining noise .
Hi Alex, could u plz help? I have dodge durango 3.6 - 2011, which chirps when i shift the gear from D to R or vice versa. What could be the problem? Could you plz help? That sound doesn`t come when engine is cold.
If those bearings are letting loose what's catching all that shit just curious hopefully that was a full motor build after that
How much does that cost to fix your car I think I have that on my Durango rocker and lifters
Have you ever seen a Dodge Durango fuse box melt and what could possibly be the cause?
we got our new durango in 2017 and paid $2800 for 10 year 100k miles bumper to bumper warranty from dodge! 33k miles now (we dont drive far!) lol retired lol so far new main and auxiliary batteries we have bought they're not covered! lol
That was a smart move!!!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor we buy a new vehicle and keep it about 10 years.
Do you use mopar lifters and rockers or do you buy aftermarket one?
Around what mile does this problem happen?
Hey Alex, you know any good mechanics in Charlotte, NC area. I am hearing the ticking noise on my durango
I wish I knew brother. I've been having customers drive to me from NC.
My only gripe problem i had with 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the water on my 3rd one with a year and half repairs from the dealership. Hopefully, this 3rd one hold up 😬🤷🏿♂️🤦🏿😭😪😂😂🤣😅
Hello sir, i have a question if you could recommend a family SUV that’s reliable but has all the bells n whistles. What do you recommend? Currently finished replacing a oil cooler on a jeep wrangler 3.6 looking for a honest expert advice 😅
Toyota 4runner, Toyota rav4 , or Toyota highlander

I felt that brother.
I have a 2012 Durango Citadel. It has roughly 179,000 miles. Love the truck but it has a lot of problems. Rack and Pinion, axels, leaking oil, a/c only cools on drivers side, engine bracket broken, transmission rough shift around 2nd gear I think. Should I repair or replace? Can I put a Hemi in if I replace the 3.6 liter? Thinking about getting a used 2014 or newer Lexus GX460.
I hope you bought the Lexus and never looked at a Chrysler product again. LEXUS = TOYOTA RELIABILITY 👏
@@Jeffhilux94 His Durango is 22 years old and has carried him 179,000 miles, get back to me when your lexus does that. Just the lousy mpg the toyotas get would cost more than the repairs to his durango in the extra fuel cost to drive that distance. I am driving a 24 year old concord, still quiet and rust free. They just need regular oil changes and hate led feet.
@davidvandyk1171 still quiet and rust free, huh? What are you smoking ? You didn't mention mileage or repairs. No, thank you keep that clunker. You can not compare a pos chrysler with a Toyota.
@@Jeffhilux94 Chrysler has a history of making engines like the slant 6 and the 3.6 and although they are not idiot proof like VWs, they will last longer than the car they are in, if you just change oil religiously, and DON'T push them. The Concord has the infamous 2.7 in it and it's so quiet you can hardly tell it's running. While driving like a fool as a teenager I blew up 3 slant sixes in less than a year (the Valiant would do110 mph if you left it on the floor long enough) My father on the other hand put 500,000 miles in his 75 Valiant , also a slant 6, and no drive train issues. He was a very boring driver. (The concord was his as well)

I have that problem with mines plus some Thermostat ... transmission is acting crazy
Found your page , you’re such a cool guy…are all the 3.6s like this? I have a Pacifica (fwd) had to replace the ac comp at 30k …I could sometimes smell antifreeze …could that be the oil cooler? My wife loves it for the space with the kids I like the power when we’re on road trips…do you have a video on drain and fill the transmission ?
