I have a 2012 dodge Durango crew with multiple misfires on 1,3,5 and took it to a shop and they diagnosed it needed a new head. They put a new head on and I still have the same codes but now it has a P219a code that it did not have before.

I bought it used years ago with 100,000KM/60,000miles. 3 days after buying it, performance went down the tube, could barely accelerate and flashing check engine light. It ended up being the rollers on the lifters seized and wore the lobes off my cam shaft. Ended up having a full upper engine rebuild under extended warranty! Factory extended warranty saved my ass!
I had a 01 Durango. I stopped putting in 50/50 and used concentrated. I live in NYC, and I never once had a head gasket or heater core issue. My AC always blew cold, and my heat always worked great. I have the same vehicle and a mechanic told me I needed to replace the head gasket. My car had a misfire on cylinder 4. I asked them if they preform a pressure test and they didn’t. I talked with a manager after that. Long story short, it was the coil pack for cylinder 4 that was bad. $180 to replace instead of thousands of dollars they were initially trying to charge me

I had one of these same Durango’s when they first came out. I got the hemi v8. Bought it brand new. Was a beautiful car but it was horrible in quality control. Several times the car wouldn’t start. Also pieces like the mirror caps kept deforming from the suns heat. Doors not aligned properly. Tow mode wouldn’t work right. Other things too which I cannot remember right now. I got so tired of it being at the dealer that I ended up trading it for a Honda. 10 years later I still have that Honda. Question? 2013 durango goes in to limp mode and keeps throwing off my traction control. Can’t gain speed probably till I turn it off and back on. Now the passenger head did get rebuilt March 2023. Oil cooler gave out and that head gave. Did throw camshaft sensor code. Got replaced and continued to do the same think. Crankshaft sensor also got replaced. Both mopar parts. At one point if I recall correctly it threw camshaft bank 2 sensor 1. Could that be the camshaft phaser? Thinking of replacing all 4. Seems simple enough. Would appreciate some insight. Happened at 2 stations...last station check all modules nothing...no short to ground... everything checked out...had to use breakout box to inspect vehicle...any thoughts? Thanks Bob
My guess you have a bad/ corroded negative battery cable. Either a corroded condition you cannot see or a minor break or corrosion condition at connection at the block where ground cable from battery is bolted. I tell you what I would do before you go crazy. Get a new ground attach it at negative post run it to body of Durango. Get a good metal connection even if you have to sand the paint off. Leave the original cable in place. This will be in addition to your existing ground. If you never see that issue again that's your problem. I found this same issue on another vehicle no one could figure it out.
The dealer should have to give the guy a brand NEW engine for the BS work they did and lying saying they machined and replaced the head gasket. Their lying could cost the guy his engine so it should be replaced by them and brand new, not rebuilt.
I have a 2014 v6 Durango with little over 100k. P0304 is the code in dealing with Misfire#4. I changed all my spark plugs and also change the coil pack for cylinder 4. I still having the same code error.
I know the pain and feeling going threw engines and transmission that’s the terrible part about getting used cars it’s nearly done pretty much with the cars life span after a certain point
That is nothing pertaining to used cars but cars in general. There is plenty of life left in used cars if the previous owner did not stuck to the typical American oil change intervals.
That is a shame, and people will still try to fix it. When they have that many miles, and have been run hot, you can forget about it. If you are a diy person and want to take a chance at fixing it, head gaskets, lifters and rockers, be my guest, you might get lucky. A good shop and a good mechanic is not going to take that risk.
I only buy 20yr old cars. Do all my engine work myself. I can buy just about any car with a blown head for around $1200 or less 😂. Siblings and neighbors hating cause I got 6 running cars.
Shops that charge people and don't do the work should be heavily fined for this crap. I'm pretty sure the dealership I took my car to for an oil changed didn't change it. Glad I paid them 60 some dollars to put it on the lift, air up the tires, put an oil change sticker on the windshield, and reset the oil life thing on the dash.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you don’t how funny your comment is to me and my wife. Because I’m always making drug jokes and messing with my friends and family… nice for someone to finally get me back!
Good call on engine replacement. Not worth opening it up. Not cost effective to repair. Even if the heads aren't cracked (Lots of those on a 3.6) sending them to a machine shop could create other issues. If they are warped which is most likely the case then milling them flat again would move the cams closer to the crank. Depending on how much is machined off you open yourself up to possible cam/crank correlation faults. In my experience I do not recommend machining heads on today's modern VVT engines. These engines are just to timing sensitive to risk having all your hard work ruined by a check engine light that will never go out.
@@blackericdenice And that would prove what? My post is based on a lifetime of experience as a certified auto tech. Now retired. I have absolutely nothing to prove to you and could care less whether you chose to take my advice or anyone else's for that matter.
@@blackericdenice Not sure why you felt you had to single me out of the blue for a being a lier about being a mechanic or my accumulated knowledge. The fact that I'm just trying to pass forward what I know makes you a joke. If you actually knew anything about today's engines and did the slightest amount of research on the topic you would see what I'm saying is valid. To quote an old phrase "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink"
You sad to say I’ve seen shops misdiagnosed fuel pump because the car was simply out of gas or the relay was bad I had one the other day she wanted a second opinion on a 07 Santa fe you know how terrible the fuel synders are on them it’s got basically 2 fuel pumps it’s got a main pump and reserve pump put gas in started up I said your fuel pump works your fuel synders are bad I put 2 synders and gas in it and she was happy
My pentastar I changed the lifters and rockers right no more ticking but now I got the low oil pressure code when I go to start it it always starts but it sounds like it can be low on a cylinder cause it like cranks over once then 2 times like it hesitates any info but it always cranks up everytime I changed all plugs and coils also
That isn’t a spark issue but I know from changing 100s the oil filter adapter housing will leak and the oil pressure sensor on back of it and will throw codes like that and sometimes will act like that one way to tell look to see if oil running down the back side of the engine or you see oil on the top of the transmission depending on what vehicle you own a 3.6 I’m not looking at it in person so I can’t tell you exactly what wrong no person can but that’s a easy thing to check it’s really easy to change you take the upper and lower intake off and you are right at it 3.6 is probably one of the easiest intakes to take off witch you would know sense you change the plugs on it and lifters and rocker arms
Sniffle of you need to, doc, it's fine 😂 My busy season is kicking in, but I really want to drive down there to get my lifters and cam done 🤯 Do you know anybody of quality in the Philadelphia or surrounding areas?
Don't buy. You will need to replace 4 cams plus all of the lifters and rockers assembly. At the tune of $2100.00 for each head. It's the cams that cost a lot of money.
I have a 2014 Dodge Durango I got it back in March check engine light was on I bought it used from a used car dealership so I told the person who sold me the car the engine light was on had it sent to a mechanic he changed one of the valves or something like that he check and cleaned the spark plugs I got it back check engine was off the next day came back on finally told me it was the valve heads Mexican guy heavy accent didn't quite understand him so I talked to the owner of the dealership he expended my warranty because the 30 days was up when I found out what the actual problem was so he took it down to a shop down in national city in San Diego California they had my car for a month and going to be 12 days now he sent it to them back in May 21st seems to me they just bearly started working on it this month so I've been going to the shop lately on Monday he told me it would be down that day he had to go get the heads back from the machine shop and put everything back together so I was like cool. Then I didn't hear anything from the dealership so I went back on Tuesday everything was put together all they had to do was put the intake back on so I thought again it would be ready and get shipped back where I live where I got the car from so I can give the dealership back there loaner car. Was not the case went back Thursday they had everything taken apart again was putting it back together again I was like what the heck now before I went there on Thursday I called them on Wednesday and told them I needed the car back Thursday because Friday I'm going out of town and I needed to pull a small trailer with mats and other stuff for a training thing which they screwed me out of $100k because they weren't done when they told the owner of the dealership they were going to be done by not once but twice lied about when it was going to be done by so I'm like ok you screwed me out of $100k I can still make $50k out of this if it's done by before Friday nope they screwed me out of that too so not today when I get off work i have to go to there shop and be like what the heck. This shop don't answer there phones they dont answer the text I've texted the guy multiple times and no answer. I found out they have a 3.8 star rating on Yelp a ton of negative reviews there workers work slow and lazy I have never never seen that before in a mechanic shop before and to take a month and 12 days which should've only took at least 2 weeks minimum
Its unfortunate that the gasket is so cheap and the repair is so costly but thats "labor" for ya. Im not complaining just things like that suck. Improper diagnostics is how you become a parts installer and not a mechanic
Not often, but it does happen. If you maintain the Toyota it will go well past 200k. But the problem is some people think just because they have a “Toyota” they skip maintenance and run the car into the ground. Maintenance is always key on any car. But in general Toyotas are built to last!
Dude, it's absolutely NOT okay to run a vehicle that's low or has no coolant for 10-15 minutes...if it has no coolant, it's going to overheat well before 10 minutes. Head gaskets are not common to fail, even if you overheat the engine, it's not an automatic head gasket issue. I've been doing this 16 years, worked on thousands and thousands of cars. I'm as honest as they come like you, but I've seen a head gasket only a number of times.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor running a vehicle for 10 minutes with no coolant is a huge no no. Anyone who's been working on cars for years knows that. You can for a minute or two, but you will cause damage running it that long. I've seen it many times. You only need 2-3 minutes max for a block test. I've done hundreds of block tests, never needed more than 3 minutes.
Not only is it a major inconvenience for the mechanic having your vehicle that low on fuel, but its also a good way to burn up your fuel pump, another expensive repair.

Depending on how much is machined off you open yourself up to possible cam/crank correlation faults. In my experience I do not recommend machining heads on today's modern VVT engines. These engines are just to timing sensitive to risk having all your hard work ruined by a check engine light that will never go out.
Show me one video of you working on a car.
@@blackericdenice And that would prove what? My post is based on a lifetime of experience as a certified auto tech. Now retired. I have absolutely nothing to prove to you and could care less whether you chose to take my advice or anyone else's for that matter.
@@redwoodforest3572 If you didn't care what I think. You would not have lied about being a certified auto tech. I damn sure don't believe you know.
@@jacobstacy588 it’s giving me low oil pressure code I have a 2012 200s
Custo got intake gasket and oil cooler
For a penstar got lucky on that mileage
That really sucks for the customer but those 3.6 L dodge engines are notorious for having cracked cylinder heads
THAT ENGINES TOAST
Post the shop that ripped the dude off. With the address. I’d like to ask them some questions in person.
Sniffle of you need to, doc, it's fine 😂
My busy season is kicking in, but I really want to drive down there to get my lifters and cam done 🤯 Do you know anybody of quality in the Philadelphia or surrounding areas?
I wish I could say I did buddy. I have no connects in Philly
Dropped my like ✊🏽👍🏾
1200(head gasket) charge that they never did. 😮
Where is your location??
Dr. Pentastar
😂
Sorry for the long post just wanted to know your opinion on this if you see it man
I what to buy a 2020 dodge durango gt v6 what do u think
Don't buy. You will need to replace 4 cams plus all of the lifters and rockers assembly. At the tune of $2100.00 for each head. It's the cams that cost a lot of money.
Is there anything I can do to prevent that?
@@jackinbox3382change your oil
What's the mileage on it and can you verify previous maintenance?
Don't
Where are y’all located ?

Are you gonna put a new engine in it? Am sure the customer was not to happy to hear that
He wasn’t happy at all. I’m not sure if he’s gonna get a new engine. He gotta come up on the funds
Improper diagnostics is how you become a parts installer and not a mechanic
after watching alex the car doctor, never buy any dodge.
Have you ever had to replace a Toyota engine at 200k or this just an American car problem?
Hell yeah! People who believe they are reliable and don’t maintain their Toyota destroy them all the time
Excellent comment!
Not often, but it does happen. If you maintain the Toyota it will go well past 200k. But the problem is some people think just because they have a “Toyota” they skip maintenance and run the car into the ground. Maintenance is always key on any car. But in general Toyotas are built to last!

Yes at this point….
I’ll make a video and show you, to prove my point.
And with low fuel is also bad for your fuel pump 😮
Yeah, and can even damage other emissions related stuff.
Not only is it a major inconvenience for the mechanic having your vehicle that low on fuel, but its also a good way to burn up your fuel pump, another expensive repair.
It’s exactly mechanics like that which sour the opinion of mechanics and adds to the mistrust of mechanics.
He got hustled by buying it
It has 199,000 miles on it. That’s pretty good for a Pentastar don’t you think?
