It means 'related to human existence' and refers to the big issues of living that are inevitable and often problematic. Existential therapy focuses on such issues, including, birth, death, loneliness, feelings of anxiety, guilt, regret, hope, longing, etc. This helps you to focus on the things that really matter and get some perspective on your life.

existential: pertaining to existence. In other words: existential therapy is a therapy that addresses your life rather than just your psyche or your character!

Insightful as always, Emmy! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm not sure you'll read this comment, but one thing I wonder is: what would you think existential psychotherapy notes "should" look like? In essence, what do you think is essential for the existential psychotherapist to write down after a session with a client?

You can do a postgraduate diploma or masters degree (or doctorate) in existential therapy at NSPC. Take a look at the website: nspc.org.uk and have a chat with the admissions officer on 020 76240471

Hi Emmy, I am nearing the end of a basic certificate in counselling course (similar to the foundation at NSPC) and wanting to go on to a diploma level course that will allow me to practice. Do you know of any that are existential in approach, as that is the approach the sits best with my outlook and I can't seem to find any in the UK.
