      Just curious: how many other therapists are you using as comparison?

    occasionally i hear people tell me how happy or even more unlikely how 'perfect' their childhood was. I find this difficult to believe although i am open to be convinced. It seems unlikely that there were no struggles or difficulties.

      Roy I can tell you that my childhood was perfect! I lived in a family that loved, nurtured, valued and respected me. I was surrounded by positivity and felt very loved and therefor loving in return.
      During my counselling training I struggled with this! There was so much trauma in the childhood stories of my peers that I began to doubt my lived experience and I mean really doubt it!!! It was the most horrendous time and actually for a while I thought about leaving training due to thinking I couldn't be effective as a therapist if I didn't have some sort of unhappiness during my childhood. Thankfully one of my tutors was willing to really explore this with me and one time said, "you're coming to terms with a happy childhood"...lightbulb moment!!
      I did have a perfect childhood and I am an effective therapist!!!

      @@karenhendry7686 Happy for you, i wonder what perfect means to you ? Every human has a dark side. I presume you explored this in therapy. Apart from this we all have biases, preconceptions and these have to be explored before we can effectively work with others. Good luck on your journey. I too am training was a therapist.

      @@karenhendry7686 I'm so glad you stayed! I just finished my last week in residency and one of the professors went over this issue during one of our discussions! Therapists do not need to have lived your experiences to help you to the other side better than you were before!

    Eugenia, clearly, didn't only have entirely happy memories, but she falsely generalized the happy moments over the sad unconsciously in order to feel better with herself, so as long as the years passed this "feeling" grew into her and we can say because she felt that big cities are very much familiar to, her because she grew up in L.A. she had these existential questions for once in her life, maybe because the matter didn't come into the surface in the previous years or because she overgeneralized the idea of happy memories, and this as a result blocked these questions to come into the surface. Unfortunately, many times, people who are "the most sure" about what they want from their life, later they may face these problems.

      There are psychotherapy services for low fees. Check out Open Path Collective to match with a therapist in your area who is willing to slide their fee. openpathcollective.org/ or check out local community mental health resources or training programs at local universities that have community clinics!

      Stick with it and if that particular therapist doesn't work for you, don't be afraid to look for another or ask for a referral. It's most important you get what you need.

    It is possible the movement, the fast-pase, the noise, the hustle and bustle of the big city, created anxiety. Also let's not discount the subliminal fears of 911. I have clients still fearful due to flashbacks memory of 911 or images from television. She could also have an "educational deficit" feeling inadequate amongst her friend who is a higher achievers. All of these can be contributors to her anxiety.

      Irvin Yalom is one of the most highly regarded and experienced psychiatrists in the field of existential psychotherapy. I think he is very aware of body language. To me he came across as thoughtful and pensive, no mixed messages there at all.

    • @mp-pl8rw
      @mp-pl8rw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@B_27 I agree, he came across as thoughtful to me as well. He was challenging her in this video, expressing his doubts about what she had previously said about her mother (how happy she believed her mother was), so his body language matched the tone of his voice and the content of his argument. He had detected some sort of denial or cognitive dissonance in the young woman and he was gently investigating it, so his body language was a reflection of what he was expressing - which seems honest and authentic to me.

      I wonder who you think was receiving a "mixed message"?
      He was being congruent with his own "workings" and as such giving a deep sense of involvement
