The E46’s truly captured the “Ultimate Driving Machine” title. They drove like they were on rails. The steering was heavy, the engines were silky smooth, they felt special. I had a 2002 325ci, it wasn’t the fastest, it had a UUC short shifter, M3 steering wheel, and air intake. That was all it needed. I drove it until 160k miles and then sold it as I had a company car and didn’t need it. I still miss that car.

I'm a big tech guy and I love touch screens, but at a certain point you want physical buttons for your most used commands in your vehicle, just from a safety and ergonomic standpoint. The people who can afford this vehicle are going to be older and perhaps less tech savvy. It just seems like an odd choice considering big luxury vehicles usually cater to an older crowd.

I feel like what really bugs me about the new BMW design language is how flashy and in your face they are. Lots of other automakers are going this direction too but BMW used to be sporty and classy. There was an elegance to their designs. Now they just feel insecure and like they have to scream at you about what they are. It's especially strange for the new M3/M4 which seems to be a pretty confident drivers car but the design speaks otherwise.

It's because of the Chinese market. The rich over there love being flashy and they are rather tasteless/classless. If they buy a foreign car, they want everyone to see it so BMW has become a caricature of itself with the supersized kidney grilles

In the past BMW cars had a nice mix of an agressive yet grown-up/ classy design, meaning anyone could buy them, wether you were 20 or 50 years old, a manager or a student. But now they just look like fucking toys, this thing manages to loose BOTH of those characteristics while not even looking futuristic or anything, its just boring. Who is the target demographic for these? 45 yo old guys that are going through midlife crisis, that always wanted a BMW but their wife tells them they need a new family car and it better be something that looks like they lost all sense of taste or fashion. This is what happens when you let someone design a BMW, who has no clue of why people like BMWs.

    Hey, friends!!!
Here are some things I like and don't like about the iX ,as well as a couple questions:
    LIKES:
    1. The crystal and wood panel control contrast is really cool IMHO.
    2. The phone storage slots are totally designed for modern people.
    3. Doug didn't even mention cup holders in this review. I guess they have modern people in mind enough that they don't need to be discussed this time.
    4. The immediate clear/opaque ceiling window button is simply awesome. It would even be better if there were a third option to make it dark. Have at it, engineers!!
    5. Doug also didn't spend his usual time discussing rear seat leg and headroom, as they must be accommodated nicely. Also with all the charge ports and climate controls, the back seat must be a very nice place to be. (I'm an even 6-footer or 182cm tall, and Doug is nearly a hand-width taller than I am so if HE is happy back there, I definitely would be.)
    6. The front washer-fluid-BMW-logo access and the rear backup camera washer logo functions are just ... totally cool and well thought out!
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Inside the rear storage compartment, there is an object at the left that looks like:
    a. a magnifying glass
    b. a pull-up spray head for washing dishes
    c. vacuum cleaner
    (WHAT IS THAT THING?????)
    2. There's a rhombus-shaped little panel on the rear bumper to the right of the right backup proximity sensor and to the left of the black panel that contains the "five o'clock camera". What is that thing? The charge port?
    DISLIKES:
    1. It's an SUV.

    Hey man love your videos!
I test drove this sav and it’s amazing. I will say when BMW first came out with the big kidney grille design some years ago it did throw me off but like you said the big kidney grill sits well with the iX being that it’s a bigger vehicle and quite honestly it didn’t take long for it to grow on me so much so I placed my order.
As far as the 22” wheels are concerned you commented that they give you a little over 300 miles range but on the BMW website it says that these wheels actually give you 315 miles range so it only drops 9 miles versus the 21” rims that gives you 305 miles range.
I was confused because a smaller wheel is suppose to give you the max range not a larger wheel so I ended up speaking with a BMW genius who explained to me that the 22” rim is significantly a lighter wheel which allows it to retain more range than the not so light 21” wheel…
So of course I changed my wheel size to the 22” wheels to get the best of both worlds being the performance and big wheel look without having to sacrifice a huge loss in range.

I really hate how every new car have moved every single control into those horrible screens and capacitive buttons. Having to navigate menus to use functions I can do in my car just by reaching down and turning a wheel or pressing a button looks like it would get tedious pretty fast. And worse are those capacitive buttons, which are a fad that should have died out ten years ago. It's too easy to activate functions when you just have to barely slide your skin across them to press them.

    • @connorscanlon6289
      @connorscanlon6289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I don’t even really understand this move on this car, BMW already refined the climate controls down to their essentials in the prior interiors with just 5 buttons- I don’t think there’s any reason why that couldn’t be carried over to this car. I am hopeful they get added to future models. And as brands like Audi have proven with the R8, there are ways to cleverly integrate physical climate controls that look cool and add to the modern aesthetic of an interior- throwing the controls into the screen is the lazy and cheap way to achieving this goal.
Climate controls are never going to be updated or changed with software, and there isn’t any better use of the physical space (on this car it’s just empty where the climate buttons should be), there is no reason for them to be digital or controlled by a screen. The iPhone created a touchscreen revolution by removing a physical keyboard in favor of a full screen. This served a practical purpose to allow the real estate formerly occupied by the keyboard on such a small device to be used for a whole slew of additional functions that could be changed and updated in the future. This reasoning simply doesn’t apply to car climate controls, which never need to be updated, are the easiest form to use while driving, and are not really competing for space/other features. As the iPhone itself shows in its inclusion of a physical mute switch-which also never needs to be updated, sometimes physical controls are the most usable and best way to perform a specific function, and don’t need to be reinvented with a screen.
