Great to see bmw reliability and luxury is top of line again.
I'm so tired of hearing about the BMW grills on the iX, i4, etc. Remember the E60 generation 5 series? Everyone complained about it, and those same people consider it a classic now. As an i4 owner, I absolutely agree on how perfectly reliable the car is, and how it all just fits well together. I love the grill!
Couldn’t agree more!!
I love my i4!
Well said boomer. Let me know what think of this fugly thing after you get your cataract surgery.
Because BMW sell fraction of volume manufacturers annually they don't have to make everyone happy & obviously they're not trying to conform. From 1st 7er they've been alternative to dull status quos & their design innovation should stand them in good stead as they remain #1 global premium as they go elektrik.
I love the grill too. Looks bad ass!
Unlike some others, I’m not stuck on the iX’s design. It brings far more great things to the table than its exterior design, and that goes for pretty much every BMW nowadays. They are all a pleasure to drive and live with on a daily basis. The technology is amazing and yes, they are finally reliable. What more can you ask for.
Maybe you don't prioritize looks but for a car this expensive, you expect it to look better. It's especially sad cause BMW used to design the most beautiful cars 😢
@@mluu510they still do. This one just happens to not be one of those. The only other ugly car in their fleet at the moment is the X2, and that’s on the old platform. The new X2 coming is very nice looking.
@@prhawkeye really? The m3, the 7 series, ix, xm and m2 looks pretty fucking nasty to me
@@mluu510 Those are all great, I don't know what you are talking about. The G80 Ms are the best looking M3 and M4 yet. The 7 is iconic and the M2 is possibly one of the best looking compact coupes out there and easily the best that car has ever looked. I'm not sure what planet you are from. And if you don't like the XM, then I'm not even sure how to have this conversation. That thing is like Batmobile level cool, especially in person. The previous gen BMWs were probably the worst from a design standpoint, too feminine, too slopey, no personality. The F series gen was just pretty boring. My only problem with BMW now is that the base prices for these cars is just not working. 70k for a 4 cylinder? I get that it's a 5, but still....
@@prhawkeye style is subjective. I am glad you're happy with their design 👍
My god take a shot everytime the presenter says the car is ugly. Like we get it say it once and move on! Car looks way bette than any of the bean shaped eq models from Mercedes
Spot on!
Announced neu 5er as Business Klasse, true of all new BMWs.
Yeah we have heard that enough now. All of us that like the looks of it knows there are tons of people who hates the look. Do I care? No.
Agreed. It got really irritating that he kept going on about the car's exterior look. The guy seems to be addicted to the word 'ugly'!
I have started classifying people saying it is ugly as losers 😄 "So you can't afford it you say?". It's like saying all Kias are crap just because they are affordable.
How you can call this car ugly is beyond me. Sure, it's no beauty queen, but ugly? Far from it.
Am I the only one that find it daring, futuristic and beautiful? I am puzzled about those "ugly car" claims, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😊
I will always maintain the grille is hideous, but I think the design is otherwise underrated.
@@CaIIOfTheWild agree, it works better with dark colors.
Nope it's definitely Ugly 😂
Yeah I think it's decent looking. It does look a lot better in black though.
I actually don’t mind the looks of the iX. Yes, it’s polarizing, but so was the i3 10 years ago.
The white colour also make the front stand out, the darker colours works better imo. I have a white i3, some of the same problem just in smaller scale.
i3 brought new buyer$ to the brand.
The i3 is really ugly too. For those who "don't mind the looks of the iX" (not exactly a ringing endorsement by the way) or the i3, there are countless others who would never buy either of them at any price because they are so ugly. So I'm not sure how it helps a manufacturer when they make design decisions like this that will actually hurt potential sales.
The i3 is still ugly by today's standard...
Best part, this color is way cheaper in many sellers because it doesn't sell, but you can buy and paint it all black and still save a lot of money.
I have a BMW i4 and I absolutely love it. Not one issue ever in one year of ownership.
Drove the iX xDrive50 before, it’s better than many cars out there and far from bad looking.
Don’t find it ugly at all. BMW got you to talk about it which was their intent. At least it doesn’t look like everything else on the road.
That thing right there, is gorgeous! It's just people who are too traditional can't comprehend. For them, we have the jeep. It's a jeep thing, we wouldn't understand. 😂
Sorry Edmunds but I do not share your strong opinion on the looks. Made the video quite off for me...
The statement of ugly is an overstatement, I think this car is actually beautiful
I agree that the front could look better but ugly all over exterior wise is a bit of a stretch. Side and rear profile is edgy with its sharp lines and modern looking. Maybe the reviewer prefers round and smooth lines on a vehicle. But I agree on the front end (fake grille).
I think the colour is super important in these, white isn’t doing it any favours
Fake grille part of 80 year old brand identity & $25 BILLION brand valuation. BMW design this century has tended to simple sculpted silhouettes with distinct details to make clear what brand they are (& easy to find in parking lots, unlike Jettas or Accords).
I own this exact model. I only care about the interior as that’s where 98% of my time is spent interacting with the vehicle. I only have to look at the exterior for a few seconds when approaching the SUV and getting inside 😂😂.
Seriously though this BMW is super fast and reliable 😊. One of the best automobiles I have ever owned.
I think the interior is quite ugly too. I think eqs and eqs look better inside and out
@@mluu510 Yeck. Sorry, the EQS looks like an egg!! To each their own!
Since interior interactive its appearance is irrelevant, like complaining about the box/screen it came in. Obviously Diamler disagree with you as they have already announced they are changing their BEV nomenclature & design, another mistake like 4 cyl. AMG!
@@trixlee5102 you talk like this iX is a stunner or something 😂
@@mluu510 One has nothing to do with the other! 😂
Edmunds, you guys are trying too hard to be funny.
I like the way it looks. Different doesn't mean ugly. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
The real issue is that it doesn't hold value, like most EV's now. You can buy a lightly used one for 30% off.
In Australia the x-drive 50 sport starts at $204,000 AUD ($133k USD) after taxes, You can buy 2 Long Range model Y's and still have almost $40,000 left over - It may be a nice car but it's simply out of reach for most people.
In the US, you can get a used one, with 10k miles, at around $60,000. What a deal!
Yes, Hertz like Tesla. No BMWs though.
Yeah but if you don't want a Tesla? It's not like there is a lack of cars you can buy for that amount of money... The IX is not an economic choice.
I love the iX and its design, it’s quirkiness reminds me of the i3 and I loved the i3
The looks jokes are getting to the point where they are beyond old, but annoying. Maybe even inching beyond that. But its nice to see that this thing ranked so high. Almost bought one. But they are expensive, my only real negative.
BMW in unique position, according to design director they have 40 million "social media followers", so 20X more trolls>buyer$, more people hating on BMW ("GRILLE!") than drivin' 'em.
It’s nice but that door close sound is a deal breaker. Not having a window frame allows the window to raddled when it’s get closed 🤦🏻♂️
iDrive 8.5 fixed the climate control settings! This review is outdated.
Idk ive been seeing IX on road and the more i see it the more i like it. Idk it’s different
Hi, My question is about the roof, how do you feel about the dimming, sorry, fogging of the glass, is it easier to see a screen in the back seat, or your phone ? It doesn't block any light, just scatters it but doesn't effect brightness. (I guess Houston or Miami would be more curious than Buffalo or ), does it give shade ?
Calling the front ugly is acceptable but any other side is an over reach.
It had actually one of the most recognizable and beautiful rear.
The rear lights are stunning!
👌🏾
I can't explain it but I just love this car!
I love my IX! And it isn’t that ugly!I get compliments every day!
How much does it cost to insure. We test drove one and liked it, but ended up buying an i4 e40 msport. The CRP frame around doors of the iX looked liked a very expensive repair. Speaking of which, a friend of mine totaled his Tesla Y by backing into a utility pole at 5 MPH. Dented the battery box.
I actually like the looks of the ix. The front reminds me of Spawn. The XM on the other hand is hideous but the ix has a nice form factor all around.
XM intentionally extrovert & allows BMW to compete with Ferrari & Aston SUVs, it is also 1 of half dozen 6 figure SUVs they sell now, so they can afford to not care what anyone thinks.
@@unowen-nh9ov All of which perform and look more asthetically pleasing than the XM. If you look at any reviews, especially from Throttle House, my point is proven. The X5 M competition can do what the XM can and it looks better. The XM is wasted potential.
My mom was in the market for an electric SUV and initially thought the iX looked ugly in pictures. But in person, she thought it was fine, and she ended up getting an xDrive50. She's had it for a couple of weeks and she's been happy with it. I've also driven it quite a bit and think it's a great vehicle as well. Even the looks kind of grew on me. I guess the bad thing with this car is that the MSRP is just so high. My mom's car is $97k and doesn't have cooled seats and lumbar adjustment and no air suspension. But my mom got it on a decent lease deal and so far missing those items haven't been an issue. It's good to know that it appears to be a reliable vehicle based on this review.
After 2021 , bmws are on par with Toyota for reliability. Infact , as far as new gen cars considered , bmw is most reliable brand .
Toyota buy Supra from 'em.
I own this car. It is a dream to drive, and about 1000x better than the Tesla (which I moved from). The front grill is unfortunate as it looks like a giant sticker, but I think the rest of the car looks really nice. The interior is so incredbly nice it's nuts.
It would be bland without GRILLE, like 4er Coupe. Saw Sau Paulo Yellow M4 Convertible in downtown gridlock, more striking (& rarer) than dime a dozen V12 Lamborghini.
Review a 2024 iX. iDrive 8.5 makes many improvements to the software interface with climate controls and in addition plug and charge with Electrify America. Same car pretty much except the new software makes it much easier to do "the simple things" such as climate controls and heated seats and steering wheel.
Agree on 8.5 software version. Much smother, easier to communicate with the car and better design than 8.0 which the guys are showing here.
Isn't it iDrive 10 on NK Vision? 20+ years of evolution, they're even losing the rotary knob dial on some.
Actually I like the design of iX. So far, iX is the best SUV in EV market. Cannot wait to see coming LCI.
My neighbors just got their new 2024 BMW IX Xdrive50 in the Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic. With the Amido Perforated leather interior. They just got it yesterday. It’s a big upgrade from their 2021 Lexus RX450H.
- Auto Journalists every design generation: The new BMW's look horrible!
- Every other auto design 2 years later: Hey, we look like BMW's now too!
Honestly, this trope is so tired now.
This time, it's so ugly blind people are objecting. No joke.
It might not be Cinderella in terms of looks, but it sure stands out and has character. Given how good and reliable it is, I’m starting to like them. BMW is on a roll currently
I hope you found the way to create favorites (shortcuts) during the time you had the car. I use that a lot, for setting distance control 😉 among others.
4:36 Yeah..but it also has situanional distance control as you on the top. So most of the time you wont need too adjust more often.
It’s actually not bad looking and trust me it grows on you because of how good it is.
I don’t find it ugly at all, I think it reflects very well in its design the fact that it’s carrying a heavy battery load.
Mine is so comfortable. The large battery is essential as you can do 500km at real speeds across country
I currently own a 2024 X5 . Many reviewers call the front “kidneys” too big, I like them(I have M Sport package). Also, new I drive 8.5 and fewer(1 for volume) take some getting used to. Heated seats and steering wheel are located on main screen as well as most climate controls. X5 is fast, 375hp, luxurious and comfortable with great utility as well. I may consider an EV BMW or Audi, better looking in the future when the battery and charging infrastructure improve, for now I’ll stick with ICE X5.
PS, you need to clean the side window glass if it’s going to be in many camera shots!
Kidneys becoming functional even on BEV, house sensors & cameras on 7er for autonomous parking & cruise.
This is one a EV I like inside and out 🤍😊 well done BMW……Excellent review 🥇
We’ve had the IX 50 for 10 months. It drives well but I wish BMW kept the old style seats with the thigh pullout support. The hole in the front seat with plastic makes no sense. We wish it had more screen functionality like the Tesla or Mercedes.
I have seen them in person, it really isn't ugly like you editors are hyping about. Bandwagoning isn't going to get you to a million guys.
Awesome EV
Great video!!
Great review specially those of us looking to snag one used!
Someone has touched it in my IX i40 truck after a year STOP screen Broken propulsion it stopped working very seriously I will tell you but it left me stranded does anyone know something or has this happened to them
I love the IX m60. And I constantly get compliments. Ugly is an opinion. It’s such a nice car. Also. You can use your voice to turn on or off all those features.
0:00 to 0:16 have to the best funny introduction start ever 😂😂😂
Great Review! I test drove one this weekend and hated both the interior/exterior. When will automakers learn that EV's do not have to look futuristic. Stick with what works! BMW's design team dropped the ball on this one. When they make an all electric X5M, they will earn my business!
Just drove one of these for the first time today damn, I liked it lol
Shoutout to Rex for the PHS Bulldogs sweatshirt!
Get 'em Dawgs. 😉
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder buddy....
Ugliness aside, I couldn't live with the cupholder placement. After one drive I took it off my list because cupholders are used by both driver and passenger every day. We both agreed the daily driving would be annoying reaching around and down many times a day. Weird deal breaker I know but for us that was it.
what I dont get is why BMW follows Mercedes and puts the seat adjustment into the door. WTF, I set the seat one time when I buy the car and then never again, why do I have to look at it every single day and forever?
No sunroof and in the cold I don’t get good range
I wish you had got it in black for obvious reasons as then I would possibly buy it. 11:04
Cheers mate
I've heard too many jokes about IX looks. It's quite ugly outside, get over it. It certainly is better than being bland (=eqs). And ffs , how many times you really have to change adaptive cruise control distance? I have had one in my car for 3 years, and haven't ever felt need to change it...
And they didn't mention the handy short cuts (favourites) where you can have the setting if you like to change it. In adaptive mode the car manages a lot anyway.
1:35 Huh? I like the way it looks from the side and rear. I get why people don't like the front though.
It looks better in black. It hides the schnoz.
Ditto i7, medcars have black i5 walk-around video, car is gorgeous, biggest 5er yet.
Which Mercedes is that?
The I drive system is designed for voice commands. Something we got used to rather quickly. We're in our 2nd year with ours and absolutely love it. Range, ride, and operating the iX is outstanding...much better than a Tesla....sorry tesla fans
Fun review. Thanks. That asymmetrical whackjob upholstery looks kinda gross too, but hey at least it's comfortable.
Adjusting crz control distance = use shortcuts....
Great suv, I'd buy it again, even the iX 40 is very fast and has good range
What actual range are you getting and is with AC on?
Looks good
I agree that I’m not a fan of this large kidney grill but it’s far better than many others.
hilarious video!
Little dude: this car is so ugly.
Every single comment: this car is beautiful.
😂😂😂
i get why boomers dont like its looks. Honestly it looks super futuristic and amazing from outside.
I would like to ask Edmunds why you classify it as an SUV? It is just a station wagon, may be raised a little. It can't go offroad, it is no more sporty than an Audi Avant so why SUV? It seems as though nowadays we call anything that isn't a saloon a SUV!
SAV, BMW X have been offroad since the '80's, friend's Dad used 325ix as Calgary ski car when he wasn't driving his SL (she traded it for a Prius).
@@unowen-nh9ov The reviewer called it a SUV at 2:59.
And one more thing can’t drive over the speed limits will not get good range
This car is beautiful. Please live with it. I love it. All you guys do is to ruin people's business.
Sculpture, with enough interesting details to not be a bar of soap or Mercedes BEV lozenge.
Enough with the ugly jokes already…
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
I personally think it looks fine with the right tire/ wheel combination.
It’s ok to say the iX is nice looking car.
That performs well and has great reliability.
The rear of this car rivals the Pontiac Aztec in beauty.
Seriously? 20 year old defunct manufacturer best you got? You forgot fugly.
Hey it’s not that ugly. It took a year to grow on me though.😂😅😅
We get it… you think it’s ugly. It’s subjective and you ruin the video by constantly commenting on it.
To quote a song “I said it once before but it bears repeating.” It needs to be said until car manufacturers stop insisting that because a car is electric, it HAS to look weird.” The Volvo XC40 Recharge didn’t resort to these antics, neither should an electric X3 or BZ4x/Solterra/etc.
But ☭🇨🇳 Geely okay? iX German independent & LOOKS it!
Yeah I am also fed up with people having to say how ugly it is. I thought so too when it was new but now I like it. Probably more the outside than the inside.
BMW managed to get people to talk about it though 😂
I loved this recap/review, mainly because they talked about the "elephant in the room" (how ugly it is). But I feel like they did it in a lighthearted way. For some reason, entities like Consumer Reports and Inside EV's barely mention styling, and I think looks are still the reason most people are attracted to a car in the first place. I'm glad the iX performed well, and it does have a nice interior.....but man is it hideous. PS it's really, really expensive too. Starts at almost $90K and can easily go well into six figures.
Between X5 M, X6 M, X7, X7 Alpina, XM, iX & Cullinan, BMW now sell half dozen 6 figure SUVs, no wonder people hate 'em!
Funniest review ever 🤣🤣🤣. Loved it.
I personally agree it's ugly and that factor alone has kept me from purchasing this car. Obviously that's a personal opinion, and lots of people of here like the way it looks, which is great! Ultimately for me, I'm willing to spend $100K on a car, but it's gotta have a design I like on both the outside and inside. The lack of buttons and controls is also a concerning issue, which nearly all auto makers seem to be falling into.... the Tesla "me too" everything on a screen pit of despair I'd say. But I'll give it some time, they might add a button back here and there. As to the BMW design issues. I honestly don't get it. I think most of their cars are ugly. Mercedes EVs are even worse. Maybe Porsche will do better as the Taycan is gorgeous in person and new Macan looks good so far (still waiting to see the new Macan in person).
You just lost so much credibilty by using the glass to hold the door. Psycho...
The only one that could decide if you’re great looking is girls, and I mean like actual girls were assessing you on the actual dating market in real time
The proof thats its truly ugly are 99% of the comments trying to explain why its not.
Reminds me of a slug 🐌
We need to follow the European mandates that there must be BUTTONS FOR BASIC CONTROLS.
iDrive over 20 years old, NK Vision iDrive 10 has steering wheel controls.
If they'd only figure out how to apply German engineering to the exterior. This thing is plain fugly. Loving our Mach E, though.
LOL IX needs a dealer visit recall but it's a perfect car. Meanwhile Tesla performs all recalls OTA...
An airbag recall is nothing you can fix with software... Same for Tesla - if there is a hardware issue, OTA will not help. And yes, even on a good car things like these can happen - especially on supplier parts where the manufacturer has less direct influence and control.
@@prhawkeye OK... I'm on 101,000 km in less than two years. No issues yet. Maybe next week it'll blow up 🤣
@@prhawkeye Sorry I can't hear you over the overwhelming proof to the contrary. I don't know where you live, but in Montreal Tesla's are like pigeons, they're everywhere. They have 4 sales / service centers all within 20 miles of one another. If they were "bad cars" as you insinuate, so many people wouldn't be driving them. You do realize the motor and battery warranty are 8 years...
Now if i go over to my neighbor with the Nissan Leaf, yeah you'll hear stories of 60% battery life and "only good for local trips"

That large glass roof turns the car into an oven in tropical countries. People have to install aftermarket covers to reduce the heat transfer. Another example of a car developed and designed by people who live in temperate climates.
Did you even watch the video? It goes opaque and blocks out the light and heat. It's electrochromic.

The BMW iX's performance, luxury, reliability, and overall refinement made owning it an easy experience for a year. But its styling proved to be quite... polarizing. Do you agree that the iX is an ugly duckling, or do you like the way it looks? Let us know in the comments below!
Looks 21st century, unlike most boxes. Pinstripes don't ruin fine tailored suit.
It looks nice. It takes some time to get used to but so are all new BMWs that aren't too soft in their design. It has just become something that "everyone says". "Oh what an ugly car". Well, most can't afford it anyway so not a big problem.
The rear end of the car looks good and sexy, the front is ugly af
What would it look like without it? Anonymous & bland.
Forgive me, but compared to the EQS interior, the IX interior looks CHEAP. In addition MBUX is a much more comprehensive and yes, much better system at all levels. The IX drives superbly, and, contrary to the EQ, it has excellent brake feel. Having driven both extensively, the IX is more driver focused while the EQ is more comfort oriented. IMO, both are the pinnacle of the EV market. However, the EQ has better range, is faster, and has unparalleled long drive comfort, better interior design and user interface. Lastly the AI voice system "hey Mercedes" makes all other car based voice assistance systems seem primitive in comparison. Again, the only thing IX has over EQ is brake feel, in every other dimension, the Merecedes has, the advantage.
Your opinion. I’ve driven both I prefer the way bmw designs interiors and it’s better built. When I drove the the eq as beautiful as the interior was, when I opened and close the door the handle and door card moved far too much… it didn’t feel solid. To make sure it wasn’t a one off I tested another they had in the lot, same story and the center console also could be moved back and forth. In addition, my bmw had ownership for the last 10 years has been a flawless experience lbs driving and reliability. My point is, minus the reliability and that’s a big plus , it really is a preference thing and making definitive statements about subjective things is silly. Like what you like.
@LafemmebearMusic
No door with frameless windows that retract while open feel solid. They however provide a level interior isolation that BMW can only dream of. The screen quality seems appropriate for a Buick compared to the high def deep color of the THREE, 4k OLED screens provided by the hyperscreen. Face it, it looks decidedly downrent in comparison. Again, the IX is a fine driving vehicle with great efficiency, but it's still number 2.
Actually BMW have been outselling Mercedes since Bangle butt.
google BMW Gen 5 motor and be prepared to open your bank account. I know two people with less than 12K miles that had to pay for repairs and price was staggering. Also software is stupidly difficult with too many submenus. Sorry fugly and not that good car. Also I know several with this hidious thing and all have tons of issues and very bad service so you must have a rare good one.
Bmw had such a good thing going with the design of the i8 and i3. This thing is UGLY.
Such a shame since BMW is pumping out their best cars ever in terms of reliability and dynamics
