I love Sinead's version but I have to say, after I heard Prince do it alone, I prefer his. The duet was I think back with The Family which was a group that Prince was heavily involved in do to the female lead singer who was Wendy Melvoin's sister, Susannah. He was romantically involved with Susannah and that was how he met Wendy and she became a part of The Revolution.

Here in the UK that song is one of the only songs that can get a grown man of my generation to shed a manly tear. So emotional and has true meaning to the words that everyone can relate to. I literally fell for Sinead the very first time I saw this performance. Her voice is obviously incredible, the emotion in the song is utterly palpable, but that actual performance, the incredible acting in her face and eyes, just broke my heart and made it hers.

This was before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. Yes, she has done her own arrangements for and covered a handful of songs by other artists. Something many legendary singers and bands do and have always done. She has been specifically requested by iconic rock bands and composers to do them the honor of performing live renditions of their songs. Yet she has written or co-written the majority of her music.

Sadly, Sinaed had a very difficult childhood when it came to her mother (who I think was mentally challenged), but she was thinking of her when she sang this song. After this song became a big hit, she was asked to host Saturday Night Live (and this is when she tore a picture of the Pope up in front of everyone) which didn't go over well, it affected the rest of her career. At least a couple dozen songs on rotation. Including one written for an Academy Award winning film. Famous composers were requesting her to perform their songs live. She was an iconic figure for speaking out the truths of what was thought to be rumor. As an artistic singer her voice captured my heart and soul. The words of this song, so soulful. It showed how depressing life can get from failed relationships, death in the family, reminiscing past loves. Even mentioning seeing a physician to help one cope... and her voice sang so beautifully it made up for the message of the song Prince wrote for her. Great reaction for another great song.
I saw her live in the early 90's, I cried the whole time. Everything about her is just so beautiful. Other good songs by her are Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes.

There is so much about this vocal performance that is technically astounding: the radical changes of tone in the middle of lines, the jumping an octave in "nothING"... But it's the emotional power more than anything that blows me away. For me it's as good a vocal performance as any I've heard. Brilliant.

Nothing compares to her. She is the most unique voice ever. Check out Troy, or her performance on Mother with pink Floyd at the unbelievable the wall concert in Berlin 1990. I worked with Sinead for 3 years and I got to hear her sing every night, and every night I had goosebumps her voice is something really special.

It’s an amazing performance of a Prince original. It works so well because the camera is close up on her face and you can see she’s clearly genuinely missing someone (in this case her mother). When the tears roll down her cheeks it makes me want to reach out and give her a hug every time.

I recall when it was first aired and it was so different to the vast majority of music videos. I installed one of the first video jukeboxes in a hotel bar, and for many younger patrons, it was the first time they had seen a number of the videos.

I love Sinead's version but I have to say, after I heard Prince do it alone, I prefer his. The duet was I think back with The Family which was a group that Prince was heavily involved in do to the female lead singer who was Wendy Melvoin's sister, Susannah. He was romantically involved with Susannah and that was how he met Wendy and she became a part of The Revolution.

Here in the UK that song is one of the only songs that can get a grown man of my generation to shed a manly tear. So emotional and has true meaning to the words that everyone can relate to. Sinéad O'Connor was a voice to be heard in song and in life. When she tried to speak about the truth behind the abuse in the Catholic faith she lost everything. It's truly a shame.

I literally fell for Sinead the very first time I saw this performance. Her voice is obviously incredible, the emotion in the song is utterly palpable, but that actual performance, the incredible acting in her face and eyes, just broke my heart and made it hers.

This was before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. Yes, she has done her own arrangements for and covered a handful of songs by other artists. Something many legendary singers and bands do and have always done. She has been specifically requested by iconic rock bands and composers to do them the honor of performing live renditions of their songs. Yet she has written or co-written the majority of her music.
Any song Prince wrote is awesome, but Sinead's performance is spot-on. She really nails the emotion of this song. Check out Shield E. , "Glamorous Life" another Prince collaborator.

I got to see her in concert. It was an outdoor venue and the entire show was almost her singing with hardly any instruments. She was just incredible.

Sinade didn't write this song, Prince did, and it sent her into the music stratosphere when this came out. Sadly, Sinaed had a very difficult childhood when it came to her mother (who I think was mentally challenged), but she was thinking of her when she sang this song. After this song became a big hit, she was asked to host Saturday Night Live (and this is when she tore a picture of the Pope up in front of everyone) which didn't go over well, it affected the rest of her career. I saw her live in the early 90's, I cried the whole time. Everything about her is just so beautiful. Other good songs by her are Mandinka and The Emperor's New Clothes.

@hermand - What are you talking about? Her debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” released to widespread critical acclaim and was hailed as one of the best albums of the year. Long before she transformed Prince’s song into a masterpiece. She made dozens of videos, had numerous hits, wrote songs for Academy Award winning films, etc. Just because you are unaware of her body of work does not mean everyone else is.
There is so much about this vocal performance that is technically astounding: the radical changes of tone in the middle of lines, the jumping an octave in "nothING"... But it's the emotional power more than anything that blows me away. For me it's as good a vocal performance as any I've heard. Brilliant.
Spot on and to think Prince didn't like her version of this song or the arrangement , just shows he writes a good song but he was sooo wrong , this version of the song is pure perfection .

Every once in a while there is a song that is absolute perfection. Prince wrote such a beautiful song and I could not imagine anyone else singing it but Sinead. Thank you for the memories.
Prince wrote this, and his original version is exactly like this with her vocals - the first version he wrote for a group The Family - the haunting beat, tempo to the melody , the choir, the lyrics, are all Prince itt is not "redone." and she sings it beautifully - this shows really how talented Prince was - wrote amazing songs for other artists - Feel for U - Chaka Khan, Manic Monday for the Bangals and many more.. He does another version of this that is more soul and bluesy when he goes on tour.. Sinead his fantastic as well. Play Manic Monday. :) 80's-90's was and is awesome. Prince was the Mozart of that era.

This song was SO huge when it came out that my local major market rock station (yes - ROCK music station) actually played this every morning on my way to work. It was sandwiched in between a Black Sabbath tune and maybe Poison or some other rock song! No one complained, however because it's that good.

Just for comparison Chris Cornell covered this acousticly and while both versions are haunting in their own ways both are uniquely beautiful. Prince was a musical genius 💜

Nothing compares to her. She is the most unique voice ever. Check out Troy, or her performance on Mother with pink Floyd at the unbelievable the wall concert in Berlin 1990. Simply perfect is her rendition of Sacrifice by Elton John. Three Babies or her Irish language songs, love them. I followed her life since the late 80's and saw her 2 times live on stage. Such a powerful and inspiring woman. God bless her
