Robert Plant was our golden haired rock god of the 70s. Jimmy Page didn’t just play the guitar but he breathed life to it. John Paul Jones kept the slow steady tempo, that builds and builds up with the passion of Plant’s voice. John Bonham gave the whole band a heartbeat. Sheer rock, pure and simple. But yet … complex and passionate. One of top 5 rock bands ever.

    • @johnathandavis3693

Mr. Jones is almost always mentioned last in the bunch, but his contribution is WAY underrated and understated. He assembled the technical arrangements and oversaw much of the band's actual production. That, and he's a musical GENIUS, a master of many different instruments. One of the great bassists...I understand he is still busy in the industry...

Really? So weird the way two people can see something so completely differently. I always thought Robert plant's vocals on this live album were some of the worst I've ever heard. It's possible some of that was due to the recording/ sound engineering, etc.

@@squaaaaak3178 That's entirely possible. The quality of live recording is rarely as good as in the studio. Plant was suffering from nodules on his vocal cords in 1973 and had to have an operation soon after this tour. He sang better in 1969, 1970, 1971 and much of 1972 but he's still good in places during the MSG gigs, particularly The Rain Song. He is amazing with that long note at the end.

You should definitely listen to the studio version, which is perfect and has maybe the most iconic guitar solo in rock music. Also it should be noted that Page said these Madison Square Garden concerts were kind of average hohum gigs, not great or bad. It's just when they had the camera's and recording equipment scheduled. Edit: you said you want to hear some more Page hot live soloing, I think the live version of Whole Lotta Love from this MSG concerts has a lot a fun flashy improvised soloing in the middle of it. Page could be pretty sloppy, but he really could play very free and loose, and that's when he's best live.

My dad introduced me to Zeppelin. They were his favorite band. He tried learning the guitar because he wanted to learn this intro. It’s one of the only songs I can play on guitar. He always said “play Stairway to Heaven at my funeral.” He passed away in 2019, and I made sure it was a song on his remembrance slide show. My stepmom did not think it would be a good song for a viewing, wake or funeral. But I insisted. She admitted later that it was a fitting song for his memorial.
I have only been able to listen to this song 2 times since that day. This being the second time. It’s so hard to hear it even now. Growing up this was one of my all time favorite songs. It still is, but I can’t hear it without breaking down. Even this time, I love watching y’all’s reactions to the music I grew up listening to. So I had to watch this reaction. It makes me happy to see others joy hearing this for the first time. I envy y’all being able to hear new music for the first time.
And it still makes me hurt thinking of my dad. I like to think anytime someone hears it for the first time, my dad smiles.
I love you dad and I miss hanging out with you listening to and talking music.

My interpretation of the hidden meaning of this song. But first the lyrics to the song, which are followed by the interpretation:
    There's a lady who's sure
    All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh ooh and she's buying a stairway to Heaven
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
    There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
    Ooh, it makes me wonder
    Ooh, it makes me wonder
    There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
    Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
    For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
    Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
    But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
    And it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go
    In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
    And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My interpretation of the hidden meaning of this song is below:
He is singing about Satan (the Piper), calling you to join him, and he will lead you to [his] truth.
Stairway to Heaven = a reference to eternal life in the abode of God and the angels, traditionally depicted as being above the sky.
The stores are closed, but the (the May Queen) = those who must be pure in their seeking, those who seek to be a "Rock" (a god), can get what they want with a word (submission to Satan), it can't be purchased with money or in a store.
Words have two meanings = Satan's truth can be a lie, and earthly riches (gold) can make you poor (spiritually dead)!
Forests = those of this fallen world.
Whispering wind = (Satan has the authority of the air) and uses music and the media, and your stairway (to Heaven or godhood, depends on his words).
May Queen = symbolized as the woman of purity (One seeking godhood, or their own truth, while denying or rejecting the True God, Yahweh, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
Songbird = (Artist used by demonic forces) is a bird that utters a succession of musical tones (Words or songs with double meanings and secret meanings, which are suggestions from the Piper (Satan).
The Piper = (Satan) is ultimately teaching [his] truth, which is saying when "All Are One, And One Is All" (Globalism/Ecumenicalism), you can be a "Rock" (a god), which is the same lie told to Eve in the garden, where one can determine their own truth, their own right and wrong, good and evil...and not "roll" (die)!
The lie of Satan led to the fall of mankind, but truth and salvation are found only in Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." (John 10:10 NASB).
    Blessings, †

On TH-cam there are some videos of bands playing Kashmir, in some there are two guitars, in other an orchestra, but the only group that can interpret it with only three musicians is Led Zeppelin. That's why, to me they are the most complete band in rock history; and John Paul Jones is not rated enough and deserves more recognition in my humble opinion.
Even in this video the two hosts simply ignored him. He is there, his feeling is in the song but his presence does not.

Amber totally understands led zeppelin and what Stairway was about. It was a mystical song and built on that mystical feeling. Robert Plant was a student of old english mystical lore and alot of it was also part of Led Zeppelin. They started out like alot of english bands back then as a Blues tribute in their songs but, grew to incorporate other styles. Like the middle eastern feel of Kashmir. Or the old foggy mytical feel of Stairway.
There is so much depth to Zeppeling that needs to be explored

So fun to hear you using the same superlatives we used first hearing this music. That was 1971, when I was 17 and a junior in high school. I have loved it through these last 52 years, and will love it as long as love for music lasts. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the music I grew up listening to.

Joan no one could have said that better than you! :} I graduated High School in 1975 and saw Zep on A Day On The Green at the Oakland Coliseum in July 77 which was unfortunately their last North American Live performance. Plants son passed away after they left Oakland and arrived in New Orleans and they canceled the rest of the tour and did not come back until 79 in Knebworth. We were so lucky growing up in the 60s and 70s. As a Teen in the 70s and now later in life its almost an indescribable era we witnessed back then. Such a simple mellow time of music, partying and no social media and all the electronic crap we have now, we went out side all the time and found things to do and friends to hang out with and chasin all the pretty girls and cruising the strip at night on weekends.. No school shootings and other mass shootings. I feel sorry for the youngsters today. I really do. But no doubt the 70s were a gem of a decade. I won't even get into the get sports teams we had just here in the Bay Area, The Raiders, 49ers, the 3 time World Champ Oakland A's, The Warriors. Fun times for sure!

The greatest rock band, and the greatest rock song. When they reformed for the Live Aid concert in 1985 they brought the house down with this one, with Phil Collins on drums if memory serves. I would go with "Ten Years Gone" next, Mr. Page has the guitar crying in that one.

Jordan's eyes tell the whole story! Imagine how we felt in 1971 when this came out. FM Radio didn't like to play it because of the length and it cut into their revenue. But they couldn't ignore the repeated calls that came in requesting it. Most of them compromised by playing it late at night. Most of us compromised by buying the album and playing it over and over again. I wore this album out. This was before cassette and most of us had this on 8 track. I still have this one and a Lynyrd Skynyrd on 8 track in my mementos. Thank you for sharing this one!

I totally understand what Amber means, she really gets it! Led Zeppelin takes us to places that we have never been, and Jimmy's guitar is the vehicle that takes us there. There are more technically brilliant guitarists, and some folks say that Jimmy is a sloppy player, but as he says, "I don't play music, I play feelings". That is why he is my top fave guitarist. His guitar reaches into my soul like no other. This, as far as I'm concerned isn't even their best song. Check out "Since I've Been Loving You" and "The Rain Song" from the same concert and be prepared to be totally blown away! Love you guys!

Even more amazing is that he did that while at the same time holding down the beat to some really strange stuff that Page would throw at him. Black Dog and Kashmir, are great examples of that. He would put some foundation to what Page was doing and then at certain times leave it and follow page into some weird lick and back to the beat again. Having John Paul Jones on bass, keyboards, and half a dozen other instruments didn't hurt any either.
