"Put simply, R.E.M. wrote ‘Everybody Hurts’ to save people’s lives. Everything about the song was designed to stop teenagers from committing suicide; from the straightforward lyrics to the dramatic string arrangements to the beautiful melody, the song hits directly where it counts - the heart." Drew Wardle

As somebody who has been there, I can tell you that when you are in that place that is so dark, so crushing, the only way you see to get out, is simply to not exist anymore... you *won't* call a crisis line, you *can't*, because you don't see yourself as something worth saving. If you don't get lucky, like I did, and have somebody from outside of your situation intervene directly, you probably won't survive. I nearly didn't. Check in on your friends. Especially the ones you have always seen as strong. I was always the rock, the one who was there for everybody else when they needed somebody. I think knowing that I could break really scared a lot of my friends. I lost quite a few in the years since. The road to recovery is a long, arduous one. It's never one that has to be travelled alone, share your load with those who offer to help, and be willing to help shoulder the load of another. Together, the load becomes lighter.
And look for the ones who have isolated themselves from any group, they're usually the ones who see themselves as outcasts, or not belonging. A compliment, or a brief conversation about the weather, could be the bright spot in their week. Never underestimate the power of your words, or of a single, random, act of kindness.

I agree. I've battled depression almost 35 years after one suicide attempt. I wasn't a teen but when my mind goes to dark places I have a tendency to shut myself off from people. The only thing that helps is medication, my fur babies, and music especially this song. I have played it so many times. The past year has been the worst so far. I lost my lab mix to cancer, then found my husband dead. He was sick but I always thought he would die in a hospital so that was traumatic. I had to sell my house of 26 years and move to a mobile home that I only could afford as is which means it needs alot of work. I'm also in a part of town away from all my friends and I don't have family. Two months ago I lost my chihuahua who was closest to me out of all the animals I have had to cancer. I've finally agreed to try therapy again but I'm on a waiting list. I'm a strong person and people keep telling me that but a person can only take so much so I am thankful for music because it's always there when no one else is.

@@absgbkm I'm so sorry for your losses, that's heart-breaking. My deepest condolences. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die".
You need to make sure that your friends know that your strength doesn't just come from within you, it comes from within THEM as well. As another adage goes, "no man is an island". Or woman, for that matter.

Near the beginning of the video as a car approaches the traffic jam there’s the caption ‘They’re all stuck’. At the end of the video when everyone gets out of their vehicles and walks away that is all the sad, ill and lonely people becoming unstuck. You’ve done it before, you can do it again. Peace, Toni.

*Love you guys* .!!! *Here is the backstory on this* Michael Stipe { Lead Singer } wrote this for his friend *Kurt Cobain of Nirvana* Trying to "reach him, so to speak" and pull him out of his depression... Sadly, as we all know, Kurt took his own life, although there is endless speculation as to whether or not it was actually suicide, but that's for another day...... THAT'S why this song hits ME so hard and I thought you should know... David ...

I think that's the real power of this song. It's so sort of direct in a way that can, in so many cases, come off as ignorant or condescending because telling someone in a dark place to just stop feeling that way is so deeply unhelpful, but then it completely flips the script by putting that imperative ("so hold on") into the context of absolute validation and understanding of that dark place.

One way to take the end of the video: Everybody has chosen to leave their problems (represented by the traffic jam) behind, and have gone on into some unknown future.
Another way: If hundreds of people vanished in such a public way we'd pay attention, we'd care, we'd wonder what happened... but we don't pay as much attention to the lives lost by suicide.

In the midst of pre-concert chaos I found him to be one of the most intense, focused, and engaging personalities I have ever come across. It was strange. Mayhem was going on around us, but there was this bubble around him of....calm.....We spoke for a bit, he asked some pointed questions then went to get ready. Really a great personality.

Say hi to a stranger. Hold the door for someone. Go out of your way to befriend the "weird" people ( aka, people different than you), which we all are. You know, the Golden Rule isn't dead. My bestie died on the 12th April 1997 from cancer aged just 34. She had already chosen this to be played at her funeral months before she died as she knew she was terminal. I sat with my darling friend the night before, she was in a coma in her room at home, and I told her how much I loved her and what she meant to me, fully believing that she would still wake up. Her little 2yr old daughter Grace came into the room and called Mumma, and there was no reaction, and then I knew and started to sob. We came home that night, and we’re coming back the next day and my husband had a phone call and walked over to me and said Cass (her older daughter) had just rung, and I said please don’t say it, I don’t want to hear it!! She had just died and they wanted us there so we got into the car and I was sobbing, and this bloody song was on! I knew it was her, trying to help me, and comfort me but I just cried harder. I sat with her for ages, stroking her hair, talking to her and thanking her for her love and loyalty. This song has come on at various times in my life since, usually when I need her, and I know it’s her. I miss that beautiful girl every day of my life. I love you so much Meredith ❤️

They should react to the film. It’s great to watch the band perform. I’ve seen them many times beginning with small venues, like CBGB’s. First time I saw them was at a public school auditorium in the east village or lower east side (NYC). Thry didn’t have an album out yet but they already had a sizable following. Saw Tom Tom Club at CB’s too. I love the TH’s earliest stuff but best was the Remain in Light tour at Radio City (NYC) with added musicians, e.g., Adrian Belew, one of my favorite guitarists: saw him with Bowie, with King Crimson, and solo several times in small venues like the Bottom Line (so sad when it closed: one of my favorite venues-who Didn’t I see there?): almost 40 years ago, right after his first solo album, the delightful Lone Rhino; 10 years ago or less at Joe’s Pub-a tiny space, and a couple years ago at a jazz club he would play at annually); Nona Hendrix who I love, etc...
Angélique Kidjo did a performance of the entire Remain in Light album! She’s so good. At Carnegie Hall’s smaller, new, performance space, David Byrne came as down from a tier seat to join her in a song. Pretty sure it wasn’t rehearsed, as it took a few minutes for them to harmonize... the beginning was so off. I videotaped that and a few other songs with my cellphone. The following year she performed it outdoors for free! Ok, the concert knocked me out... but when they toured Speaking in Tongues, I was moved in a different way. I love that album so much and Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place) is my favorite TH’s song. That and Book I Read, and Don’t Worry About the Government from their 77 album. When they performed that song I was literally in tears. Not something I ever do.
Guess I got carried away with stream-of-consciousness writing, so I’ll stop now. As a NYorker who loves music and who has gone out to hear it live, often, since I was 14 . . . 1/2 a century ago...I could go on writing forever.

I tend to prefer their earlier work, this song is a notable exception. By the time they recorded this Album, "Automatic for the People", you could understand the words Michael Stipe was singing. In the early years, you couldn't understand half the lyrics... but they were no less powerful. You should watch Eddie Vedder's speach from REM's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
    Here's a direct quote:
"And I can say, there are things that I hold and feel [hand on heart] very deeply about inside here that Michael Stipe put in there himself. What’s really incredible about this is, is that while this is happening… this all happens without ever being able to understand a f^%#@g word he is saying."
The sound track of my 20's, 80's alternative on mainstream radio, one of the greatest bands of the late 80's to the end of the century, #97 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the greatest musical acts of all time... thank you again for this one.
My favorites... "Talk About the Passion", "Oddfellows Local 151", "Green Grow the Rushes", "Radio Free Europe"... and every other song from their first six albums.
I almost forgot, "It's the End of the World as We Know it". It's actually our family song. (Corny alert) We, my wife and I and our 3 boys, all shout 'Leonard Bernstein'. I'm guessing if you're still reading this far into my comment, you understand .
I'd love to see you guys react to my current musical obsession, Porcupine Tree. You should start with "Arriving Somewhere but not Here", live from Chicago.

If your children ever feel as if they are miserable in a way no one can understand, let them listen to this song over and over.

Thank you for doing this, it has a very special meaning to me, i lost a brother to suicide. But i love at the end as well, it shows you are not alone, and to hold on, their is help. Sometimes you just have to appreciate the slower songs for the emotions they invoke, not to mention the purity of the vocals. There are so many good ballads out there that I think you’ll like even though they’re slower songs.

It’s like finding a hidden gem to catch it on the radio etc. Everybody Hurts and Losing My Religion are quite commonplace and not nearly the treasure as that early REM.

'The One I Love", 'It's the end of the world as we know it' and of course, 'Losing My Religion' by REM
You should listen to 'Shiny Happy People' by REM - the clip and song are as cheery as this is sombre. Seriously. It's outrageous... in a good way. It'll make YOU smile!

Two friends that I grew up with committed suicide. It breaks my heart that they felt this was the only way out of their situations. It has been several years and I still cry. I wish they knew how much they would be missed and how much they were loved.

As great as this song is, it doesn't crack their top 10 in my opinion. Try Find the river or Day Sleeper. Amazing tracks

Thank you for this. I am almost 54 years old and still cry my eyes out at this song. It hits so hard. I used to be in a very dark place and probably thought of suicide more in one day than most people do in their lifetime. I felt as if I failed at everything. That feeling, oddly enough, is the only reason I never tried. Because I thought I’d fail at that, too. I managed somehow to change my thoughts and with that came a change in my life. I’m somewhat successful, I live in a beautiful home with a beautiful wife, I have 4 incredible grandchildren and life is good. I’m so blessed to be here today and every day. My wife and I do a thing every single day at dinner where we say one thing that we are grateful for. That alone keeps us grounded and humble. So please, if anyone is reading this and struggling inside, message me. Talk to me. Talk to someone. You are special. You are loved. Please hang on. It’s worth it, trust me. ❤️❤️❤️

I played this all the time when my marriage broke down. My friends asked why I listened to such a depressing song. I told them it's quite the opposite and I didn't want to do something stupid and stay alive for my beautiful daughter.
In the UK the Samaritans use it as their theme.
