that was just simple multitrack harmonization but on the same note slightly out of tune and tempo called double tracking, as someone already said. Maybe there is some distortion or hard compression on one track to make the voice more scratchy and linear in the harsh part, and a reverb to glue the whole thing. That's what they would do today, at that time the audio could have been compressed and distorted just by using analogic tapes in the recording and mixing process.

Blah, I already rambled a novel as to why this autotune thing is simply a false notion poeple use to feel more superior with their musical tastes in another comment. But can you name a single actual singer these days who needs or relies on autotune? Not any popstars and not the new generations hip hop. Singers. Just name one. It's just not true. I am just so curious what singers are using autotune to where everyone thinks all current artists use it. lol I think every generation has beautiful singers and talented artists. The only thing that has really changed is the radio, and what they choose to put on there. Especially with how popular streaming is now. I am curious, because I ALWAYS see people commenting "no auto tune" as if beautiful singers these days use it. lol We can all talk about how amazingly talented someone is without feeling the need to down other music. It's just so childish, and not even correct. Please name me any current popular singer who uses autotune. I will take just one. I can rattle off so many modern singers from so many genres who don't.
The ONLY time you see autotune is on radio pop songs and some current young hip hop/R&B. That genre just happens to be whats popular right now for the radio, but there are a multitude of fantastic singers/artists. There are beautiful and extremely talented voices in every time period. I just appreciate greatness and beauty is all forms, and comments like this shows me you've boxed yourself into a false definition of what is talent. Which means you're missinout out on a lot of wonderful music.
And i know this is blasphemous but autotune isn't always bad either. It can make already perfectly beautiful vocals have a different feeling. It's different than artists who purely depend on them and use them on all their songs. But autotune used correctly is merely another instrument. I would also like to think experimental bands from the 60's-80's, like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc would have also experimented with autotune, as they did with all other sounds and whatever new technology was out at the time. Hell, even Peter Frampton has one of the greatest albums ever from that time period and is know for the instrument he uses that sounds very similar to autotune. So it isn't that someone uses it, its how they use it. And again, this notion that singers these days depend on it is complete nonsense. lol Just a lazy attempt at musical elitism. lol
      Ramble over.

I listened to the intro again, but it's a little difficult without headphones...
I believe if you listen to the first verse that is just the reverb others mentioned (the sound of singing in a big open room where the sound almost echos a bit). But when the drums kick in, that's when it sounds like they overdub and have two different vocal tracks layered. Probably needed it to give her vocals more power with the drums and instrumentation that came in.

You're hearing an "overdub", also called a "double track." The artist sings the song, then sings over his or herself to gain a fuller sound (or just to add more emphasis on certain parts). Sounds like there was also some reverb in the mix. This technique is used in almost every song, in one form or another.

Snead autotuned voice? No! She has one of the best voices in pop rock, alternative and folk rock. Very natural voice. She had many popular songs/videos throughout her career ('80, '90s, and '00s). I think this song was about her mother or a lover. I don't remember. Brad is close.
Also autotune was rarely used back then, I think Cher back in the late '90s was the first mainstream artist to have a mainstream hit using autotune. "Believe" was a pop dance hit. But, autotune wasn't used often until around the later 2000s, mostly by rappers and R&B singers. Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Black Eyed Peas, etc. Many pop artists. Also a few rock bands.

She added the word "Momma" to the lyrics because she had lost her mom. But the words (except momma) were written years before by Prince. It has nothing to do with the loss of a parent. It is all about liss of self. When you think you've found ",the One," you start to open up. In those late night soft conversations after the lovemaking is through, you do more than cuddle and whisper words of love. You begin to let another inside your psyche -to see who you really are. Your very darkest fears you share. Your longest-held dreams you share. Your emotions felt of joy, anger, sadness, all are revealed. You end up giving to another a part of who you are that no one else knows.
Then your lover leaves. With your liver goes that part of you once shared and you feel you will never be while again. That emotional rollercoaster is captured in her eyes and the quiver in her voice. This was not just a song, this was art.

Some of what you hear in her voice is Irish keening. You will hear it with Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, and even sometimes in Bono's (of U2) singing, both are Irish. Back in the day, most of us thought this was a breakup song - but great music means different things to different people, it doesn't have to mean the same thing to the listener as it did to the singer.

The song is written by Prince and it is about a breakup but when she was recording the video her mom had recently died. She wasn't exactly sad about it. Her mother hated her and treated her like garbage, still the line "all the flowers that you planted mama, in the backyard, all died when you went away" made all these painful memories flood over her. That's the point where she starts crying.

The face, head and heart of Sinead O’Connor is about being anyone you want to be, not allowing others to pressure you into doing what you don’t want to and standing up for what is right including for those who don’t have a voice. Back then, she was judged harshly for her appearance (a woman without hair then was deeply judged as not womanly) and all she stood for. I believe this close up video was in defiance to all that ignorance. Just another seed of many she planted that helped humanity look in the mirror at their ignorance.

I absolutely love her cover of this Prince song. It became a smash hit and I went out and bought the CD and it turns out there are many great songs on it. It's really a solid album. In fact one of the songs, that is so beautiful, I think it's called, I will have you with me or maybe that's just the hook in the chorus. But I've performed it with some others at a friend's wedding. It is acapella in four verses and four voices, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and it starts with one voice and then with each successive verse adds another so it's all four singing acapella for the final climax of the song. No auto-tune at all, she really is a great singer but she did double track her voice on this, which is a perfect choice for this content, I believe. Basically, she sings it once and then they go back and she sings over herself singing basically the same thing, but due to very slight differences, it gives it that extra body and makes it sound really textured and penetrating.

This works in studio but live its historically much harder to pull off 1) since the singers aren't there and 2) recorded tape tracks during that time were not necessarily digital or rudimentary digital and super high quality recording was only really in the studio.

Prince wrote and recorded this song in 1984, It was Sinéad O'Connor's manager, Fachtna O'Kelly, who came up with the idea for the Irish singer to cover the Prince song.
When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'" In her memoir Rememberings, O'Connor explained that the lyric that triggered the tear was:
All the flowers that you planted mama
    In the back yard
All died when you went away
Her mother, who was abusive toward her, died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 18. That day, she removed the photo of Pope John Paul II from her mother's bedroom wall; this was the same photo she famously tore up on Saturday Night Live. Peace out.

Chris Cornell's rendition of this song truly gives these lyrics their full meaning. In my slightly ignorant opinion, this song now and forevermore will belong to Chris....you guys should check it out.

Nothing Compares 2 U is a song written and composed by Prince for his side project, The Family; the song featured on their eponymous 1985 debut album. The song's lyrics explore feelings of longing from the point of view of an abandoned lover.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this song wasn't about a mom. "It's been seven hours and fifteen days since you took your love away." That's a break-up, not a death. "I know that living with you, baby, was sometimes hard, but I'm willing to give it another try." That's something you say to an ex, not to your mom. "All the flowers that you planted, mama, in the back yard, all died when you went away," was referring to an ex-girlfriend. Remember that Prince wrote this song in the '80s. "Mama" was often used back then as a term of endearment towards a girlfriend/wife, especially in songs. I still hear it used now and then. Sinead switched the gender for most of the song's verses, but she left this one as it was.

Sinead herself talked about how she wasn't one to just pine away over a man after a breakup, so she emotionally connected the song to the death of her mother, which is what gave her version such emotional depth, that was very much lacking in the original.

Hey y’all- oh you must see Sinead do this live- her voice is phenomenal- she’s onstage, barefoot, dancing a little-and it’s beautiful! AND LEX, if you haven’t (I should have checked) anyway, you must see Chris Cornell’s cover of this..AND there’s more- A more R&B style done by a group called The Family- absolutely gorgeous with R&B and orchestra notes- Every cover is very different- Sinead happened to make the song famous-Soooo many people have done these versions.. The Family version always gets over looked and shouldn’t- they were one of the first to do it- (Written by Prince.) y’all will LOVE Chris Cornell’s cover FOR SURE! It’s a must SEE and hear-Him, his guitar AND VOICE- on another note, imagine Chris Cornell singing MJ’s “Billiejean!” (Yes, THAT “Billiejean!” ) Well don’t imagine I, cause he did cover it-😃 Slowed down, acoustic and voice! Blow you away, I tell ya.’ And Brad, plenty of distance in all of them.. 😆

The Family was the original recording; they were a group that Prince was trying to promote, and so he wrote the song for them.
Of course, Prince's own performances of the song are pretty damn good, too. But when is Prince not?

I love that so many young people love a 40 yr old song. She sang this song because her mum died and it made her think of her and her feeling towards her mum after she died.It never ages.. But now she must think of her son who killed himself, my heart breaks for her. I loved .the song in my 20 and still love the same song, It would be my favourite solo song it never ages.

That song was written by Prince. Sinead O'Conner had a lot of great material. She had a rough go of it after her speaking out against the Catholic church on SNL. But it ends up she was right about the things she was saying. On 3 October 1992, O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest. She sang, which she intended as a protest against the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church, referring to child abuse rather than racism. Her life eventually spiraled out of control a few times since then. She suffers from a bipolar condition. One of my favorite tunes by her was called "The thief of your heart" which was used in a film called In the name of the Father.

Lex has it spot on, it's duplication. It's called doubling, she has sung the track twice and because she'd never sing it exactly the same you get this effect when you layer them, they also may be ever so slightly out of sync to increase the differences.

The song was written by Prince. It is about a broken relationship, but her mother did die shortly before she recorded the song, and she channeled that pain into the song.
