This 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible comes from an era where big cars ruled the NASCAR Speedways and the space race was in full swing. This particular car excites Muscle Car fans thanks to what lurks under the hood... a 425 HP, dual-quad carbed R-Code 427 V8 coupled to a 4-speed transmission! Ford didn't make very many Galaxie 500 R-Code convertibles, but the Brothers Collection was able to find this one and share it with Muscle Car Of The Week!

I have a '63 Mercury Monterey, basically a fancy '63 Galaxie, it also has those emergency pointers on the radio. I didn't know what they were for until now.

The 427 FE engine in this Galaxie was a top oiler design, not a side oiler, as stated. The side oiler was not introduced until '65. It was a necessary modification to help high RPM lubrication in NASCAR stockers.

Being 72 I know alot about these wonderful FE 427's and the blue cresent 429. Ford went to the fast back design for better aerodynamics for NASCAR racing in 1963 1/2. The FE 427 block was totally unlike the 406 by having 4 cross bolted lower main caps, along with a special cooling process and had larger oil passages and water cooling jackets. The 427 block could not be bored past .30 over due the water jackets, plus the specially precision cast, then machined block had a very high nickle content for more strength, with extra ribbing along the lower sides of the block to make a stronger block. It was a totally different beast from all the other FE engines.Long live the FE 427.

Guy in our home town had one exactly like this car. It would run with the 340 hp corvettes.

Kevin Oeste, you are the best! Love your easygoing yet informative style. You get the details right on the cars of this unforgettable era. Do you have any other channels on TH-cam?

The transmission grenading is why the R-Code had an open rear.

Only 411 427 Galaxie convertibles built, it’s a center oiler block not side oiler with a Low riser intake not medium riser

Some bad info here. The side oiler was not available until 1965. The heads are not medium risers. They are low risers. Factory compression was 11.7. The tail lights on this car are wrong. These are from the 300 series cheap line the right ones have 4 chrome bars in them to form a cross. Nice car.... needs some tlc in the motor department.

Times change . Over sized drum brakes on the front . I watched an auction the other day . Had a car of the time period with NASCAR drum brakes ... Disc where around at the time ?

Imagine .... Ford putting a 425 hp V8 on the street with Dual Quads, Solid Lifters and a high-lift cam!

The GTO was not the first muscle car. This car was.

I like the 1962 Skyliner a lot better, although the 1963 XL is pretty cool also.

This thing probably got 8 mpg in town, and 12 mpg on the highway, with a tailwind.
