  • 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 427 4-Speed R-Code-Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #190:
    This is one of those cars that sets your imagination on fire. A long, Raven black ‘64 Ford Galaxie 500 that glistens like a prize fighter in the ring, with a heart just as big. Ford was good at building big and comfy family cars, but they also did a heck of a job stripping them down into racing versions, like our R-code version with it’s 425 HP 427 powerplant. From The Brothers Collection.

    my Mom bought a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible in 1969 w/ a 390 engine, out ran the police one night on her way home from the Marilla Grill at 2am , she made left hand turns and turned her lights off and floored it ... made it home 5 minutes before the cops got there and had my Dad tell the cops she was there all night sewing costumes for her go-go dancing day job ... cops let my wild redheaded Mom go !!! ... fastest car I ever drove 2 years later !!!

      Good story the 390 was a good motor for street driving plenty of power and perhaps better fuel economy than the 427.

    Nice presentation ! Beautiful car.
    As a side note. The intakes on 1963 1/2, 64 (this one) and early 65 are of the Low Riser design, as well as the cyl heads.
    Medium riser 427's were introduced mid 65.

    THESE were the years of true muscle cars! They stood apart from all the other cars in the line up. As a kid, I would always look for the badging on the car. That alone made the car special. My preference is toward MOPARS, but any muscle car from Ford, Chevy, or Pontiac is what the 60’s and early 70’s were all about, REAL muscle car sound and performance!

    I use to race mine. Went to the track many times. Car was a completely stock 1964 Gal. XL. Well except for tires. They were bias ply and on the original wheels. I was able to put G70-15's on them. I rebuilt the engine and was able to keep all original internals including the factory cam. It also came with 4.11's Best et was 14.06 @100.5 mph. These were fun cars! Mine was Vintage Burgundy . It was an R car and the only other option on the car was a reverb in the trunk.

    The '64 Galaxie is by far my #1 favorite full size Ford. None of the other years of it come close. And black/black w/ R code 427, makes it just the best. I may be more of a Chevy guy then anything else. But the Mustangs and the '64 Galaxie have been able to interlope into my list of dream Classic muscle machines along with a bunch of Chevys and some Pontiacs. The highest percentage of my favorites just happen to be Chevys. And part of my dream collection consists of a '64 Impala & Galaxie together w/ 4-speeds and their dual quad motors and no power steering or power brakes on either of them. And that's even though many commenters here would probably say that's one of those things that just isn't done, a Ford actually with a Chevy with the owner wanting to keep both and not get rid of the Chevy in favor of the Galaxie. More '64 Impalas w/409s were losing more 1/4 mile races to Fords than previous year Impalas, Bel air, and Biscaynes probably because GM was banned from racing so Chevy could no longer offer extra drag equipment (to go w those 425 hp motors) that Ford and Mopar could with theirs, and more '64 409 w/425 hp Impalas were made with power steering as well as power brakes as well which compromised it a bit along with power convertible tops maybe. That is true. With that said, I'm blessed to really really like the '64 Galaxie, too. And understanding how more people these days would say that a '64 409 Chevy is nothing more than super hype, well the '64 Galaxie can have the more badass color combo that this one has, black/black. Well, if I was really concerned about pleasing everyone here, I'd never be saying anything good about the 409s at all no matter what.

    In 65, I had a 300 HP 390 XL 4 speed fast back, red with a white vinyl roof with awesome white bucket seats and interior those great 60's XL's were famous for. Only the 390 was A lazy pussy cat compared to the bad assed 427 in this 64.
    One thing I'm happy to see on this beautiful 64, is the period correct, OEM round mufflers at the very end of the car with their downward pointing pipes. Mine was tops though for picking up hot chicks with it's long console and the space between them was wide in-conjunction my 6 ft 1 would barely touch the back seats back support, I could bang away in comfort and style all night. This awesome car was like having your perfect designed sexathon car. After getting that dreaded notice in Mar 29th 1966 "Greetings You are hereby inducted etc. So I went on my last 2 weeks of freedom with a fuckathon. Due buck naked and covered in sweat after 12 nights of this wild shit, due it mar. it was pretty cold. I came down with an upper respiratory inflection after 5 days of test etc.and too ignorant tor ask to see a army doctor and so sick I thought I was dying. 2 days before sent to BCT, I recovered, or the Vietnam era brutal BCT training might have killed me.

    After looking very close at this alleged 427, I noticed the distributor had vacuum advance. The only ones I ever saw (72 yrs old) had mechanical advanced dual point distributors. Plus the idle was not quite right sounding, like raggedy and not with the proper precision clicking, whirring these bad boys sound like, having owed a 61 fair lane with a 406 block, medium riser 427 heads, long tube cast iron 427 headers, a radical solid lifter cam, never knew the brand because Boswell Ford in N.M. built it for drag racing. It had the 3, 400cfm Holley tri power set up the 406 had.The shift points were 7500 rpms. Also if you got down on one of these beast like he did, their-ed be a huge cloud of smoke 10 ft.high. Plus the car would go sideways with those skinny tires. Yep, somethings wrong here, because I never saw a 60's era R code as sluggish and ill sounding like this one, NO shit guys.

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they didn't. The first Mopar Hemi engine came out in 1951. Mopar engineers first started using the hemispherical combustion chamber design while Chrysler was contracted with the government to build aircraft engines during World War 2 and they started applying it to their car engines after the war. The first ever American muscle car...the 1955 Chrysler 300...was powered by a 300 horsepower 331 cubic inch FirePower Hemi engine with two 4 barrel carburetors. Chevy, Ford, Mercury, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile had no V8 engine that made even 200 horsepower in 1955...let alone 300. That was a huge horsepower number back then and a respectable number even by today's standards. The 56 Chrysler 300 was even more of a beast than the 55. The 56 had a 340 horsepower 354 Hemi or an optional 355 horsepower version that wasn't recommended for street use. It wasnt until 1958 that another manufacturer was able to build a car more powerful than the Chrysler 300 with its 380 horsepower 392 Hemi or 390 horsepower fuel injected version. That manufacturer was Mercury with its 400 horsepower 430 cubic inch Super Marauder engine with Tri Power Induction...a one year only engine option

    I bought one new but dealer refused to order a 427 or even tell me about the 330. I ended up with the 300 hp. Not much power with the weight of the car.

    Would be cool if Ford would make a galaxie or fairlane again. Modernize it like the new mustang but keep it plain jane like the old ones.

    This brings back some great nostalgia for me. I was just 15, and a family friend ordered one in Raven Black, just as this one. He ordered it with bucket seats tho. After owning it apprix 3 mos, one rainy night at around 50 mph another driver pulled out in front of him, totalling the new Galaxy. So, he ordered another, this time with a bench seat (to better accommodate his family) . A month into owning the second one, another driver blew a stop sign, totalling this one as well. These accidents both occurred within a mile of each other.
    P.S. This ended my friend's 64 Galaxies ..... By this time, the 65s were out, so his next new one was a 65 Galaxy station wagon ..... 289/automatic. (True story)
