This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently.
I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all.
In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle.
In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that.
Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed.
As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags.
Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance

I’m thankful no one was critically injured, tons of support from the car community, thank you all.
@@russstover8190 Amen to that. Glad nobody was critically injured. That was terrifying. I do like how the video took the time to show how your experience can benefit others. Now there’s time to heal and rebuild. Cheers brother.
We all want to show our rides , and what a beautiful car you created. Being a English man it’s rare to drive an automatic, and I’m very wary of not being able to pop the clutch. I had an issue where a bung in my intake manifold came out and the car revved to hell, but I could pop the clutch and kill it.
So sad for you this happened, but come back stronger 👍🤟
Get off the road russ, you clearly dont know what your doing, just dont care about other people
Did you figure out the point of failure in the brakes? Master cylinder? Line ruptured? Caliper failed?
Someone who has worked as both a Tech and an Advisor, it blows my mind how little people think about brakes and tires. No matter if your vehicle makes 10 horsepower or 10,000hp, you need to be able to turn and stop. The fact that this gets overlooked on performance builds is just scary.
They were doing like 50mph, not 150 the brakes were more than adequate to stop. His rookie move off riding the brakes and having a stuck throttle etc caused it. You don't need baer brakes etc to stop a car at 50mph
@@mariomarquez5559 you aren't very bright are you dummy? That car came stock with drum brakes etc. It has disks on it with dual piston calipers, you can clearly see it so i highly doubt it has a single. You're as bad as the 2 bozos in the car. Btw the car is a 64 not 68
No KIDDING!!!!! Same same
Sure it's fun to go fast, but more important to be able to slow down. You can not overlook that type of stuff because you can get yourself killed or others around you. Be smart when making cars go fast and put as much money into your braking system as you did your engine bay.

As an engineer who worked for Wilwood brakes for many years and spent countless hours working with high performance stopping systems I can say one thing with no hesitation. Just because you can afford to do something doesn't mean you should if you don't know what you're doing. There is more to braking than just changing out brake pads and fluid. Braking is arguably THE most important system in any motor vehicle. This kind of reminds me of the guy with the homemade submarine that imploded recently.

The fact that these guys had to be called out hundreds of times to even get them to write a clarification on the health of the mini van driver. Really shows their character, they didn’t even think to address it in the first 12 min long video

A sanity check is certainly required.
There are extremely expensive sports cars out there, which are engineered to harness large amounts of power and very few of them have a power output approaching 1300 HP.
Half of that power would be too much for a car without ABS, traction control and 4WD.
This vehicle doesn't even have airbags or a modern crumple zone, it is a stupid car.
That owner is 100% responsible. Those brakes are definitely not designed for 1300 hp. You mentioned smelling the brakes. That's a huge warning sign. I feel bad for the poor people he smashed into.

Old car brakes weren't fantastic even when new let alone when aged and adding so much more demand on them.
And having an emergency brake crank that bar back and put it in neutral
Its the American way.. all show, no go
They didn't even have a shoulder harness… You couldn't have planned this any better to try to mangle these guys than what happened in this car. Failure from the start piece of junk
Well said. I learned at the age of 18 stupidity of under-braked cars. Off the shelf, the Ford Falcon XR6 was disgraceful with catastrophic brake fade after just a couple of hard corners. As I got older, my Nissan Skyline taught me that better brakes allow you to go faster.... and live longer.
I feel bad for you bud. I would never get into a car with someone so irresponsible that they think 1300 hp and a sticky throttle isn’t enough to make him pull over and fix the problem. That’s an aweful situation for someone to put any other people into. Pure irresponsibility. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thank you Adam, much more polite that I was going to say it.

Yeah your armored truck is likely worse than a modern commuter car like a mini van. Its built to be solid, and... well, armored. They have big steel bumpers etc. That's great for protecting the vehicle, and the money inside maybe, but there are no crumple zones for energy to be absorbed and dissipated into the vehicle itself rather than your body inside. You have your weight and size, but even a small vehicle traveling 50mph is carrying a butt-load of energy and it has go somewhere.

As a tech, that was very worrying after hearing about the brakes, seeing how small they're appeared to be. That impact though, man its nasty but a miracle they both made it out
Brakes seem to be the last thing these hot rodders think about, when in fact brakes are the single most important item on a car. Anyone can make a fast car, but do not think about brakes.
Those disc brakes were perfectly adequate for road speeds. Any road brake setup will boil old glycol fluid riding the brakes with that much torque through the drivetrain for that period of time.
It wasn't the brakes that were the issue, bone stock factory brakes would've stopped the car just fine, if he hadn't been riding them for miles !! The fact that keeps getting pushed to the back is
THE THROTTLE WAS STICKING !!! They should have pulled off the road immediately and addressed the issue , repaired, or had it hauled back to the shop.
Because old cars are built like tanks

"I've had an accelerator stick before" "I smell brakes" how many signs do you need?
The picture of that disc brake at the beginning of the video was the first and only sign they needed.
Exactly....
Indeed! The actual danger sign came before that however, throttle sticking. The rotor condition was not ideal but shouldn't have been a problem operated at low speed on the streets by a driver that could see the warning signs, the throttle issue should have been an immediate kill power, pull over moment. Brakes would still be working fine and 20 years of hard work not gone down the drain, not to mention those that may be feeling this incident for the next 20.
I think the final sign was when they blasted that dude from behind can't believe they didn't stop before that
Well, nothing can fix stupid I guess.
All of that experience and all of those warning signs, and were just like a normal person and blew them off until you found yourself in “OH HELL” Moment
This just seems insane to me. The brakes were the second thing I upgraded on my car was the brakes. Went with Wilwood 4 pistons and upgraded rotors on front and swapped the rear to a disc setup. Full steel braided lines. I built my car to handle a 700hp turbo engine. Because power means nothing if you can’t control it!!

I was surprised too! I just assumed that would be a big part of the conversation. I saw that Russ put it in a comment that was pinned. He said "As far as I know no one was seriously injured. Beauty of modern cars with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts, and air bags"
I mean, OK, but as far as you know? So you don't actually know then? And seriously injured? Does that mean they were injured, just not in critical condition in a coma somewhere?

Fortunately people just went around me and did not cause an accident, and I was able to push the car to the side of the road with my friend that was with me who is now a San Jose Police Officer. After that event I put in Disk Brakes in the front from a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 that was being parted out due to a rear end collision, and installed a 1970 Dual Reservoir Master Cylinder and Earls stainless steel braided flex brake lines to the front and back brakes.

IKR ignition off does wonders, me and my uncle had a similar situation in his Audi 80 quattro, A bit of showing off banging through gears, when we realized it wouldn't stop accelerating, cooked the brakes trying to slow down before brain cells kicked in and we killed the ignition and with some harsh zigzagging we managed to coast to a stop,

It's a parking brake.

This is actually pretty common in the car scene. They spend a fortune on the body and engine, but leave the brakes and other important parts standard etc. Then they take that car that has 10x the power it did when it was manufactured and they are surprised the brakes can't slow it down enough.
At least know what you're talking about before posting nonsense. While the mechanical handbrake certainly can and should be used while parking, it was absolutely designed as an emergency brake; at a time when most automobiles could only be stopped by the gears in the transmission. In the event of hydraulic brake failure, the parking brake can be used to slow/stop the vehicle. I've had several occasions, as an instructor, where I had to yank the emergency brake to stop a vehicle because the driver panicked and didn't brake. It's never failed me in its intended purpose.
