I can relate to that metaphor... I ride a 40 year old Suzuki... I love the joy and simplicity, even the occasional break down. My tool kit gets as much use as my riding gear... But I love every mile.... Life is good, God is great!
The rear shocks are actually underneath the bike. They are mounted longitudinally between the frame rails with a cantilever linkage to operate them. They are NOT under the seat.

If mono means one...this bike has two shocks mounted under the frame ..which is sort of under the seat...if under the seat means below...this Dude is confused with the latest and greatest bike..not the Evo

The Evolution aka. Block Head engine did in fact save HD arse, it's still the best to date. No silly cam chain tensioner's to deal with.

You do know that the Evo 80 was NOT the only Evo engine, don't you?. There was also the Evo 883 and the Evo 1200 introduced at the same time. in the Sportster. All were AMF engines which was probably the only thing AMF did successfully. The Sportster actually has a better design with four separate gear driven camshafts. Simple and bulletproof. Many riders say the Evo 80 was the best Big Twin engine ever made in terms of reliability, simplicity and durability. While the Evo 80 was discontinued at the beginning of the 21 century, the Sportster Evo engine continues.

I work on bikes every day. All brands. I can tell you that the only difference is Japanese bikes tend to tolerate lack of maintenance more than Harleys. That being said like anything, if you don't maintain it, it will let you down.
My '89 FJ1200 is a fussy bike to keep running!

Great video for a great classic bike! My current ride is a `91 Electra Glide w/dependable EVO motor that does not leak oil and dependable as a hammer, with 125K miles on unmolested motor. I`ve owned numerous Goldwings and sport bikes over the years and this is what I ride now and love it!
The softail at that time didn't have a mono-shock under the seat. They have two shocks located under the frame. Great sounding bike!
This is a great video. I like my 83 FXWG. Might be a Shaker and a Vibrater. 4 speed transmission. But I sure enjoy riding it.

Yes...and AMF saved HD in the late 60s from going under...when NO ONE else wanted to bail HD out...I was there...I remember.
I recently bought a 1998 Dyna Wide Glide, all stock besides Harley leather bags and Harley windshield. That Evo engine likes to warm up before being rode, but it runs unbelievably well once it is. The sound and feel of that engine is great! I’m smitten...
The thing about a Harley is it depicts an iron horse perfectly. I ride a 2008 Electra Glide and when I'm cruising down backwoods roads I feel like I'm on a horse. A Harley feels like a horse that's not quite tame and might throw you off anytime. The vibration at idle feels like the bike is breathing. When I get off I feel like I need to tie the reins. Japanese bikes are like swiss watches they're so smooth it's like they're not even running . They put you to sleep , where the Harley has some attitude. Like a fine wine only a true rider can appreciate it.

God works in mysterious ways
This bike is a carbureted intake. You arent supposed to jump on it and take off like that. That will lead to leaking base gaskets. You also need to use the choke. Let it idle with the choke on for 30 seconds or so, release the choke then take off, slowly until the bike is warmed up thoroughly. The EVO engine is pretty much bullet proof but you have to let it warm up correctly.
That's what I'm screaming.
I got a 1990 springer with an s&s and I never use the choke. 3 twists on the throttle and it fires up no problem.
I bought a 97 Evo and the previous owner put an absolutly awesome cam in it in 09. Now it has that magical potato potato idle sound that is just therapy for the soul to listen to.
I'm not much of a Harley guy but always like the EVO years for some reason. Loved the looks of Mickey Rourke's bike in the movie Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
It may well have 6900 miles. I just picked up a 2000 Road King from an estate and it had 2600 actual miles. Some people just don't ride them much. The LED upgrade is nice.
I have a 2009 streetglide. I have just under 70 thousand kilometres on it. I didn't ride mine much. On the other hand the 88 electraglide has over 600 thousand kilometres on it!

The lovely old Shovelheads ended with the FXWG Wideglide in 1983. Then came the lovely, simple, trouble-free, single camshaft, Blockhead 1340 Evo's; 1984-1999, (with just a little bit of an oil leak). Then it all went wrong, and the Twin-Cam came out with all its complicated, expensive, whirring cam gears, tensioners, and chains!...what went wrong?? Sometimes, older is nicer!....😉...😉...!
My twin cam ever dies, I'll probably return to the Evo. The M8 is very nice, but the Evo proved itself.

The negative comments come from people who never owned a Harley. Riding a Harley is it's own thing. You need to own and ride one to get it.
These early softail have lots of character but that chassis is not good, with 2" of rear travel and heavy flex you'd better never forget it is trying to kill you.
I miss my 1999 FXDWG. Kept it 12 years and remember waiting on a list for 6 months to get it. Drove it home in 20 degrees Fahrenheit up here in Boston. The glory days of Harley Davidson. Now we see television commercials for Harley, Not in those days brother !
i love my 96 heritage ST. no leaks, in fact its been parked in my dining room for the winter.
Wow Sean, you didn't sound too impressed with the Softail. It leaks. It's slow. Won't get you home? OK. I own a 98 Heritage Softail. I live in Montana where we have two seasons. 3 months it's hot. 9 months it's cold. The riding season is short so I ride a lot when weather permits and it's not snowing. My first season I rode 4000 miles. My first ride was 1000 miles round trip. After the season ended I took my bike in for service. Fluid and tires basically. The oil never leaked. The bike will do 90mph without effort. Stock all the way and it never left me on the side of the road. Now, 21 seasons later, I have 105,000 miles on it. Still doesn't leak, still runs 90mph without effort, and I never have called for a tow or assistance to get home. The bike is still stock and I have never regretted buying it. I am almost 60yrs old and my bike gets regular service by me now. You also mentioned it had one shock. I'm not sure about a 90 model but mine has 2 shocks in the frame just in front of the rear tire at the bottom. My bike has been my pride and joy for many years and a clean Heritage usually means the owner took good care if his machine. I've never had to rebuild my bike either. New starter was 10 years ago and brake pads every 10,000 miles is all I've done mechanically to the bike. They are reliable and usually don't leak. So in short I think the guy/gal that buys or bought that bike is pretty happy with their choice. Just wanted to clarify that not all Harleys are money pits or garage queens and with basic service could last for decades as mine has...later

I sold my 01 Road King in May and just sold my 02 FLSTC in Sept 2020 to buy a Evo so I can work on it without a bank of computers like the Starship Enterprise.I will nerve buy a Harley newer than 1999 again. Good video.
Why do you insist on saying they leak oil. My Evo had 280,000 kms / 175,000 miles with no oil burning,leaking, or engine rattles

I've had 3 Harleys from 1994 and up. All Evos and no leaks of any kind for any of these bikes. I still have a 01 Sportster that has 34,000 miles and runs Super Good! No leaks and starts every time. Now this is a solid mount motor so it buzzes like hell! But it is FUN and has never left me anywhere.

Yes, the new one has a fuel gauge, Fuel injection, bigger paniers, euro3, abs, temperature gauge
Yet still, the old bike has an engine that has a lot more character and it revving it feels a lot more natural(carburetted)

Rode behind that bike from Gettysburg to flight 93 memorial last summer. It is loud, but runs well.
The evolution motor had already been designed when Harley was bought back from AMF. Harley designed the twin cam in part so they would have patent designs that the aftermarket did not have. The twin cam was the first harley engine that the parts did not interchange to other harley engines. Remember patent designs. I have shovels and twin cams. I am looking for a nice evo dyna. I think the evo dyna is the goldilocks zone of harley. Cost reliability and longevity.

I will never sell either of my two HDs - both evo motors. 88 heritage and a 71 Electra glide retro fitted with a 96” SS stroked block head. Both got that classic vintage Harley style I like. Never need another bike.
They didn't leak, mine doesn't. Mine is 1991 Sturgs FXDBS.

Shaun, use a hair dryer on a fairly hot setting to warm up the pirate sticker up, it melts the glue underneath. Then get a plastic credit card or store card to scrape it off. Comes off really easily with no mess or marks. Dont use a metal or harsh scraper though! Try it. It works 👍
My '86 FXR is super reliable. Evos sound just right!
HD forever I owned mostly pan heads, shovels and a 89 heritage, but that year there was a casing fault caused me headaches for 2 years, now got a 2001 Dyna and 93 bagger something,

"Vibrate themselves apart" is an exaggerated statement, but you'd do well to always use locktite and tighten every nut and bolt you can each spring. Pay particular attention to your shift linkage, pegs, mirrors, all the stuff that is sort of. 'attached'. On some Harleys these things tend to loosen up even with Locktite.
NOT a monoshock. Those are the 2018's and up. The real softail has two shocks that run parallel with the bike on the bottom in front of the swing arm.

I've got a 07 Street Glide with a 103 and I can't tell how many cars are behind me. That Evo sounds like a real bike and my twin cam sounds like a two-stroke JD sputtering out in the field. My 05 sounded the same way. That there Evo was the last of the Harley's that actually sounded like what I think that a bike should sound like. I like it.👍
Mine doesn't leak anywhere, and it has 47,000 and it's a 2003 Evo 883 XLH and I bought it for 1200.00 and put a rear head gasket set on the valve cover and rebuilt the carb and it now works fine and gets it on brother, and gets 35.5 in town and even better on the highway.
That may be the most honest Harley review ever. ROFL
BTW, I love the 45 to 60 run...and in only a little over 4 seconds. That's Chevy Chevette power there; another American classic not guarantee to get you home.
Someone has probably already told you. But, if you get Goo Gone you will love it. It will take stickers off with ease. It also works on other sticky stuff. Plus, it has a nice citrus scent instead of a harsh chemical smell. It's all I use! You just put some on the sticker with a rag and rub it in then began with removing the sticker. It will peal pretty easy and just clean the rest of it off with some more goo gone.
Evo development began under AMF as basically a low cost way to upgrade the Shovelhead into a better motor. Not to say AMF didn't make mistakes, but they also did good things too. The Evo being one of them.
Herb Wag finally someone else that knows the story. Also don’t forget the NOVA project by Willie G. that got scrapped because they had to choose which design. I have a 1991 FLHS with 150,000 miles. EVOs forever.
@@chuckmccroskey4864 Yes, I forget that! The Evo turned out so good that H-D didn't need NOVA which would have cost much more to bring into production and it wasn't a real Harley anyway, while the Evo definitely was. Thanks!

P.S. Most people forget that all the bikes back in the 30s - mid 70s leaked oil. It didn't matter what brand you had. Me and my friends have road a lot of those bikes back in the 60 & 70s. The only one that didn't leak was my 73 Z1 Kawasaki. When better gaskets came along, my 69BSA Lightning stopped leaking. That bike was fast.

awesome vid...I also have a 1990 heritage, my fathers old bike. Health reasons have prevented him from using it the last few years. He got it out one day, handed me the keys and the registration and now i have brought it back to life. Riding every couple of days. Not only is my father happy, but I actually think the bike is thanking me too, sounding better and working better with every ride. Has 89000 km ( 54000 ) mi. Anyone know how long they are good for ? Hey Sean from SRK cycles! I've got an 82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim and I'd like lower handlebars on them. I've looked to lowered risers and I can't find them. Any idea where I can look? I ask here because you mentioned the 14 inch apehangars!
Never owned a Harley. Had a Triumph i bought new. A 1000 Ninja, CX500, a Suzuki. Have had a 1976 Moto Guzzi 1,000 police model with a dual range box and torque converter. It's down now for some work. Had it 5 or 6 years now. Good bikes. Really pretty much the Italian Harley with the engine turned 90° and a driveline. Got a Yamaha XS1100 for while it's down. Never own cars anymore. Will i own a Harley? Maybe. I know they can be reliable. EVO or a real classic like from the 1960's or older would be my choice but I doubt the price has come down like some later stuff. So many of them around now. They were pricier when i was young. Just were not nearly as many then.
I got a 92 FLHS love that bike. no leaks and you could completely strip it down and rebuild it in your garage if you wanted too

Jumped over to my dads 1999 Softail Springer last week when we were out riding and i must say, It’s a great bike!
Comfortable, good-looking, machanically raw and sounds awesome. But... It’s not a fun bike, and doesn’t suite me as a 29 year old.
But one day, I will own a Harley!

My 97 had 463 miles on it when I bought it in 2017. First owner won it in a contest. I don't think he was much of a rider and when he died his son who does not ride took it with the idea of getting a license. Child and school and so I ended up with a 20 year old bike w/ 463 miles on it. He had all the documentation and a lawyer to draw up a contract. Love it.

I've had a bunch of Harleys over the years and only had one that started to leak. Replacing the seal on the mainshaft took care of that. No big deal.

Rob have you tried a twin CAM DYNA? The more the mileage the faster.mine has the timing set ALMOST TDC. Push the starter and POW you're gone!
I've had a flathead, panheads, shovels, an Evo, and I'm on a Twin Cam now. The Evo was an awesome motor. The TC is a good motor, but have you paid attention to the M8? An 8 valve Evo Panhead. I have ridden it, and drooled.
I bought my 2017 SGS just because of the engine. Everything thing else on the bike is just a bonus. They did an amazing job with the M8.

That's exactly how I feel on my 2010 1200 Harley Sportster.
Yeah, great thing about Evos is that they didn't really leak anything lol. That would be the Shovel's that were leaking, and in reality even they just had poor QC because AMF was trying to churn them out asap. The big twin Evos really just have that base gasket issue that's not even really an issue unless you try to jack up the horse power well above stock. It's actually kind of astounding how solid they are. No lie, if they made new models with new EFI evo's I'd buy them over the M8 models. They probably can't even sell them anymore because of EPA garbage.

No not a mono shock under the seat...actually 2 shocks under the swing arm ...evo did save Harley...though they had small cam bearing problem. They never had the oil leak problems when serviced properly. like the previous Shovelhead.
number 1.....the suspension is NOT a mono shock under the seat......it has 2 shocks under the transmission...….yes the blinkers work, no it doesn't leak oil, it was my brothers bike he traded in last week
oh, and that is not a pirate... it's a Navy Chief, and those are Aircrew Wings on the fuel tank
I would like a bit of detail on how your difficulty scale works. I'm not sure if my preferencein bikes is to blame, but the reviews I watch seem to all be in the same place.
I'm not doubting you here, but I would like tio know how a heritage soft tail and a Honda rune both rate toward the center of your scale. Are the controls on the Harley harder to work? Are the ergonomics of the rune that much better to make up for the weight?

Correct, AMF owners drove the brand down in quality, and since them, they have brought it back, yep some issues, but they keep changing.. and offer a variety of styles..but is still a benchmark all others aspire to with owner loyalty.
